Re: [Elecraft] How to record Audio on K3
There's a free program called "Audacity" that will do this. See http://audacity.sourceforge.net Audacity provides useful editing capability. You can write your result file as an .mp3 file, which is a fairly compact format (and loses some amount of quality, depending on the options you choose). You might also be able to use the Windows Sound Recorder, which is under Start - Accessories - Entertainment - Sound Recorder. The Sound Recorder will record a "wav" file, which is uncompressed and gets very large very quickly. If you need more than a few seconds of sound, you'll be better off starting with something that has more capability than the Sound Recorder. If you're just playing around locally maybe a multi-megabyte file is OK for a few minutes. But if you're going to send it to someone, investing a little time to learn a compact format might be well spent. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Serial Port
I use an EdgePort with 2 serial ports and can testify to their quality. Bought this years ago when the cheap versions didn't work very well (at least that was my experience). In contrast, the EdgePort worked right from the start, and the EdgePort people provided great support when I wanted to change the configuration. This is the expensive Rolls Royce of serial ports, and these days the cheap ones seem to work fine. But if the EdgePorts can be had cheaply on ebay I wouldn't hesitate to choose the same brand today. 73, Erik K7TV - Original Message - From: "Jim Miller KG0KP" To: Sent: Monday, March 30, 2009 5:15 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Serial Port >A friend put me onto EDGEPORT USB to serial devices. [Elecraft] K3 Serial Port
Thanks to all who replied with suggestions. My computer has plenty of serial ports as I'm using a ByteRunner card to add extras, but of course there is only one serial port on the K3. What sounds like a promising solution is LP-Bridge, which several of you suggested. I will look into it in the next day or two. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 3.04 Power Output After Tune
Hi, I also have this problem that SSB power is low following the use of "TUNE". I don't have the built in tuner. I use the tune ("hold") function to generate 10W CW for my external remote auto-tuner. In the contest I got into the habit of doing a power cycle after tuning (I now see that there are better ways which helps. I have also observed the slow creeping up of power over several transmissions until it eventually recovers fully. I don't have any precision instrumentation to measure peak power. I just observe the average power on my analog SWR meter and I estimate I start out at 2/3 of what is should be after using tune. I join others in hoping for a quick resolution to this. There are two menu entrys that effect power in addition to the front panel PWR control. There may be interaction between these in certain combinations of settings or BAND and MODE. Wayne has limited internet access this weekend and has asked me to request information from those who are experiencing this problem. [Elecraft] [K3] K3, indipendent band and X-Verter
Hi all I've just updated firmware on my K3, band indipendence works great on HF. Using X-Verter ( connected trought its BNC ) on main receiver I can't route Main antenna to Sub receiver for HF listening, these same happens switching receivers, I listen HF on main but can't use X-Verter on Sub receiver. Do I miss anything? Thanks in advance Anto IK4PMB -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3%2C-indipendent-band-and-X-Verter-tp2550553p2550553.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power levels
Hi Dave, No it's not the spike problem. I think that it is close to the "tune then creep up in power" issue. It only seems to be a problem when the KPA3 is selected. The power output on either a whistle or using the 2 tone oscillator is low on SSB, and hitting the key puts the power back up. However, the increased/restored power level is nowhere near as stable or repeatable as I would like. Bands above 40m seem unaffected. 73 Stewart G3RXQ On Mon, 30 Mar 2009 17:53:19 +0100, Dave G4AON wrote: > I am also using the latest beta (3.04) and don't find the power level on > SSB swings much, it was also OK in that regard with the previous beta > (3.03). Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power levels
I am also using the latest beta (3.04) and don't find the power level on SSB swings much, it was also OK in that regard with the previous beta (3.03). The firmware between v2.38, which as fine, to the last two suffered badly from short duration spikes on SSB, these spikes could be readily produced by scratching a microphone grille or sibilants in speech. My drive levels are typically 23~25 Watts to an Acom 1000 linear. Is this the same "tune then creep up in power" issue as noted by others, or a general tendency to create high power spikes? 73 Dave, G4AON === Spent a few hours in WPX SSB, but gave up as power levels from my K3 were all over the place. [Elecraft] OT: crypto RX
I am responding since my reply does have something to do with ham radio. In fact, this rectification phenomenon is what got me into ham radio! In the latter 50s I couldn't believe my ears when one evening I was in the bath tub and could hear faintly, but distinctly, the AM station WJR -- Detroit, seeming to be coming from or near the tub water spout. We lived close to their broadcasting antennas. I called my Dad and he heard it as well. Of course, at first, he thought I was nuts. IT only "worked" some of the time and it seems whenever I wanted to demonstrate to a friend what I heard, it didn't work. Naturally, I was deemed to be a nut case by my buddies. It would come and go but no doubt about it, it was WJR. Since neither of us knew what was happening, my Dad suggested talking to our neighbor down the street who was a ham. He explained it was an interaction of the metals used in the water feed pipe and spout and the spout probably "amplified" the sound a bit. He then gave me my first radio -- a crystal/cat whisker kit. I spent hours moving that "whisker" around and "tuning" in stations. I was totally fascinated and enthralled and started to hang around Russ "the ham" and he was my mentor and Elmer. What a great guy and what a great hobby all of these years. I have not thought about those events for years and the post about the rectification via amalgam fillings made me smile and I thought "gee, the same sort of thing actually happened to me and that is why I am typing this today." Re: [Elecraft] OT: cyrpto RX
Reports like that from a number of people have spanned at least half a century that I know of and seem quite true. Usually they are about people bothered by "talking" in their mouth or head caused by a filling rectifying a nearby AM radio station. It seems to me I saw more of such reports in the 50's and 60's than lately. I wonder if that's because mercury amalgam is not commonly used by many dentists today, and most old fillings have deteriorated and been replaced? It is a reminder that poor contacts just about anywhere near an RF field can cause bizarre effects producing RFI problems, whether it's in the mercury amalgam, a loose bolt or a poorly soldered connection in or near an antenna. Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware Problem
I too have power issues after the latest firmware upgrade. For me the power out in SSB starts low and after talking for a minute or so rises. On 40M its not too bad but 20M output is low and stays low. The RX is also affected by the ATU unit tuning. Very strange behavior. I saw the note that the guys will look at the issues this week. I think something got "scutched" up, but after all it is a beta version. Dan I am having the same problem as others have stated. I started with the installation of MCU 02.82 my KXV3 stopped working to listen to AM radio, yes the RX Antenna was used and the KXV3 was set to NORM. The power on Data fell a little but the power on SSB was near zero strange messages while on 40 meters flowed across the screen it went so fast that I was unable to even write it down to see what it said, numbers and letters. I installed MCU 3.04 today the KXV3 still does not work. The SSB bands are working 40 meters reaches about 70 watts. I was able to get the SSB working with MCU 02.82 by reinstalling the configuration that I had saved. Any suggestions would be appreciated I am not the sharpest tack at making K3 work, reading your posts makes me feel very inferior.
