Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 AUX Ant
Well I just placed the order for the SubRX today so I should be getting that cable in the box. Here's hoping that all goes well with the install as I won't have much time to get replacement parts from Elecraft before FD if there are any issues. Of course, you can use the K3's DSP and IF filters manually to block out QRM, but it would be really neat if there were a way to ask the K3 apply AGC in bins across the receive passband, instead of wholesale across the receive passband. Re: [Elecraft] K3 power consumption
Hi Bill, If the sub receiver is installed but turned off, the K3's current consumption in receive mode should be around 1 to 1.2 amps depending on other installed options, supply voltage, etc. At 5 watts in transmit mode, current drain will be around 3 to 4 amps. A 15-watt solar panel would just keep up with RX current during the day. That may be adequate, but only if your battery has enough reserve to get you through planned night-time operation. The K3 will run down to as low as about 10 V without any stability issues, but I'd suggest swapping batteries at more like 11 V. 73, Wayne N6KR On Jun 15, 2009, at 2:15 PM, aa1o wrote: > Hi Wayne, > I would like to use my K3 for Field Day again this year. I do not want no connections in the front at all. I need clear access to the front panel 48 hours of the contest. On the other hand using separate AF amp for the referee makes sure that in case some short circuit happens in his headphones I will not loose audio in mine. [Elecraft] On K3 crystal filter gain compensation (FLx GN)
Lately there has been some discussion about how much gain to add when compensating for loss in the K3's individual crystal filters. The general guideline is "as little as possible." I'd suggest starting with 0 and working up to as high as a few dB only if it seems necessary. Narrow bandwidths themselves create a psychoacoustic "gain" effect, so you don't really have to make up for the entire loss relative to wide filters. Also, excessive gain can in extreme cases worsen the performance of DSP signal processing, such as noise reduction (NR). Finally, AGC tends to flatten signal amplitudes in general, further reducing the need for per-filter compensation. While I'm on this topic, I'd also like to suggest using a minimum of both RX and TX EQ. The '0' levels were carefully determined empirically, and in most cases the optimal values will be well below the maximum range provided. Unless you have an aural sensitivity issue in some pitch range, or a serious mic deficiency, I'd stay between +/- 6 dB. As with filter gain settings, excessive values can result in adverse interaction with the DSP. And yes, there will be per-mode RX EQ in a future firmware revision. Thanks for all the suggestions on this. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB Monitor Suggestion
One of the complaints regarding the Orion 2 was that it took an engineer to use it. A good friend was advised by a top operator in ARRL that he might better consider a PRO 3 than the Orion 2 which was too complex. The idea that the Orion 2 was to complicated is a falsehood but the rig took time to learn. This is also true for the K3 and maybe even more so. I noted in the past week a new K3 being sold because it was too complex for the owner. I have at times wondered why my K3 was not transmitting only to find that inadvertently some menu item had been changed. We have all seen similar problems on this reflector. Elecraft has done a fine job but it is hard to satisfy us all and I sympathize with the design dilemmas Elecrafter face. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Overload from WYFR
Hi Steve. Apparently there has been a problem with the messages to me from the LP-PAN Yahoo Group, so this digest is the first I am aware of your post. Sorry about that. I think it has been resolved now. It sounds like you may have to check your gain setting in LP-PAN, as well as the input level on your sound card. LP-PAN should easily be able to handle S9 + 60dB when set properly. What is the noise floor you are seeing on other bands? Do you have the K3 buffer mod installed? If so, you may need to remove it, or add a pad between the K3 and LP-PAN. Where do you have the gain pot in LP-PAN set? It should be set for minimum in your case. If you turn the input level of the sound card way down, do you still see the clipping? If so, you need to reduce the gain setting in LP-PAN. The first step in solving this is determine where the clipping is happening (K3, LP-PAN or sound card). 73, Larry N8LP Steve Ellington wrote: > > A photo (40 meter Overload) has been uploaded to the file section of the > LP-PAN Yahoo Group. Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB Monitor Suggestion
Another vote for this feature request. It seems it should be feasible to add a MENU:MONITOR On/Off toggle, which could then be applied to one of the programmable function buttons. Of course Wayne has a list as long as his arm of "little things" like this, so don't expect it overnight, but if there's enough interest, we've seen what can happen :) BTW, monitor level is stored separately for SSB vs CW, so once you have each mode setup, there shouldn't be any issue with switching back and forth. My issue is that I use SPKR+PH most of the time, so I can listen without having to have my headset on, but put it on when I want to transmit. Ideally, I'd like to get the monitor audio in the headphones only, and not in the external speakers (which produces feedback). Re: [Elecraft] K2 translator for the white sticker
That is a very interesting project, and I am sure you really enjoyed creating the box. The KRC2ACC is expressly designed for this purpose. It reports almost all K2 information through CW, and has many key functions to let the op know just what is going on with the K2 and to maintain better control of the radio. We worked very closely with blind hams in its design, learning quite a bit from these great folks along the way. Of course, like its brother the KRC2, it can also perform antenna selection. Sounds like there are multiple ways to help folks use their Elecraft radios! But, you don't get the BNC connector and cable until you get the KRX3. I don't remember having any trouble routing the cable when I installed the KRX3 months after building the K3. [Elecraft] K2 translator for the white sticker
One of my HAM friends is white sticker. He would be happy to get a K2 usable for portable operation without any PC. I posted his problem to the German QRP Forum, asking for help. My idea was to get an ASCII / CW Interface KISS, the number of keys kept as low as possible. Norbert DK6NF very fast designed a little box containing an Atmel Processor which translates the ASCII IN/OUT of the K2 into CW code. Not all the possible commands, but at least the minimum information a blind OP needs to know where he starts. Only 4 keys: 1. sets VFO to A, responding an A in CW 2. Responding with VFO Frequency 3. Responding the Mode L / U / C and CR for CW Reverse 4. Responding the power Because I am sure this little translator would be helpful for some of our US Fellow QRPers as well, I post this info to let you participate the discussion. Do this Information make sense, or do you mean we need additional information. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Overload from WYFR
> Further to Joe's suggestion: I've heard of a strong local signal being > rectified in rusty guttering giving problems to a beam in just one > direction. Took years to find that one. Reminds me of something which happened many years ago here in Southern Germany. The interference monitoring and abatement service (at the time they were part of the German Post Office) received several complaints about TVI. The nearest ham was about 2km distant and when they checked his transmitter, the signal was clean. When they measured at the TV receiver there was a large harmonic on the same frequency as one of the TV stations. It turned out that one of the ham's neighbours had a narrow band, high gain television reception Yagi pointing towards the 2km distant TV. It turned out that there was some oxidation at the feed point of the Yagi, which acted as a diode. As you can imagine, this is the very short version of this true story. vy 73 de toby, DD5FZ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] TX blocked
We should remember that K3 sells globally and a transmitter which could work outside the amateur bands might cause problems in some countries. It is my understanding that even as things stand Thailand will not allow the use of the K3 by their amateurs. Lets not forget that the FCC limits the receive frequency range for some scanners and HTs so as to keep them off certain critical frequencies including wireless phones. Mean while the K3 is a wonderful radio. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Petr Ourednik Sent: 15 June 2009 09:34 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] [K3] TX blocked >Hi Folks, >How to unblock the TX in K3 for transimiting out of HAM freq ???
