[Elecraft] K3 #1170
I ordered K3 #1170 in the Winter of 2007, hoping it would arrive in time for Field Day 2008 but it didn't quite make it. Because of other obligations and a waning interest in amateur radio in general, the K3 sat unassembled for almost a year with the parts inventoried and organized in plastic tackle boxes. After some prodding from other club members and rumors of bets being taken out against me having it assembled for Field Day 2009, I dedicated myself to assembling it a few weeks ago. I want to compliment Elecraft on yet another wonderful product. I've built a K1 and XV144 transverter in the past and consider those among my most prized possessions. Assembly was straight forward and the K3 has been practically flawless in the three weeks I've been playing with it. K3 #1170 will be in service this weekend at the Razorback Radio Club's WU5PIG Field Day effort. We have an eclectic collection a radios to play with, including a Yaesu FT950, Yaseu FT857, Swan 350, and a Drake TR6 but will probably only enter as a 2A as it is just too hot here keep more than two stations manned for any length of time. With the predicted heat index values of 105 or more, I believe the ops will be frequently retreating to an air conditioned room or the pool next to the operating positions. The heat concerns me. Late this afternoon the front panel temp of the K3 indicated 46 C. Based on the initial reaction among the operators, I think the K3 is going to be very popular tomorrow and will see a lot of use. The K3 is likely to be under quite a bit of stress tomorrow. We'll see how it handles it. Hope everyone has fun and stays hydrated this weekend. And I hope the wonderful band opening on 10 and 6 meters this afternoon repeats itself. If it does we might have the best Field Day we've had in a while. 73, Brad AA5CH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Correct Ron, and I hear none of the low freq thumping. As I mentioned I dont usually hear anything at all running the AF/RF as I described in normal operation. I have no problems, but I can duplicate the problem others are having with the RF gain wide open. Merv KH7C > Merv, KH7C wrote: > > I posted that I could not duplicate the thumps on #2603. Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO tuning hash
Cookie Thanks for you response. I have this noise into an open, short and 50 ohm load. I believe it's coming from the K3 itself. If you study how a synthesiser works with it's phase locked circuitry, it's highly likely to be the source. However, I haven't don a scope probe on the output of the circuit to know for sure. 73, John W1QS, ex N6JL On Jun 26, 2009, wrco...@flash.net wrote: John, I spend a lot of time on ten and a fair amount on six. I usually operate CW with most of my activity around 28.05. I hear some noise on ten meters occasionally when the band opens which I attribute to broad band interference coming in on skip. It varies with beam heading, but not with any tuning parameters. I have speculated that it may be a Broad Band over Power Line artifact, but I can't confirm that. Does your noise go away if you switch to a dummy load, or change your beam heading? Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO tuning hash
John, I just noticed the same thing on 10m the other day. If I used the finger dimple, I could hear it. But if I used the outer rubber ring with 1 or more fingers it would not be nearly as noticable. I was operating portable in my yard with around 150' of extension cord to power my Gamma PS. I thought about searching the archives for something about this. Funny you should mention it. 73, Dave W8FGU -Original Message- From: John Lawrence Date: Fri, 26 Jun 2009 17:20:59 To: Subject: [Elecraft] K3 VFO tuning hash Now that 6 and 10 meters have been open to Europe and Africa, I frequent these bands for the first time in the six months of owning a factory built K3 radio. That's a matter of turning up the gains so you have band noise (QRN) coming through the audio, then adjusting the keyer and TX timing so that only very short bursts of noise blast through between code elements. That's perfectly normal in a QSK system. You are "hearing" in the very short interval between code elements. Typical "thumping" will be heard with the RF gain turned all the way down (to suppress the band noise) and sounds just like someone thumping of a big bass drum or hollow log. Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO tuning hash
John, I spend a lot of time on ten and a fair amount on six. Re: [Elecraft] K3 QSK
I posted that I could not duplicate the thumps on #2603. After trying a few more times I am hearing exactly what Mike describes, and after talking with Toby, it may be a difference in terminology, at least on my part. I hear the same thing but I describe it as pops or clicks, and as Mike says it seems to be from the high background noise, not that I have a high level of background noise, mine is S2, but from the high level of the RF gain control, I never hear these artifacts due to the way I use the AF/RF controls, my AF is usually set about 12 o'clock and RF about the same, I use the RF as the gain control, I think this was described many times in the past by others. The thump is also noticeable if there are signals on the band inside the passband, I have the monitor volume set high enough that it equals those signals in volume so the thump is less noticeable. Some of these anomaly are hard to define, and finding a word to describe the sound is difficult. To me its pops or dull clicks, others its thumps, but we agree we are hearing something. 73 Merv KH7C > I can duplicate what might be called QSK thumps with high volume settings > and using earphones or speakers. [Elecraft] K3 VFO tuning hash
Now that 6 and 10 meters have been open to Europe and Africa, I frequent these bands for the first time in the six months of owning a factory built K3 radio. What I've discovered and reported to factory tech support is a very noticable hash noise while in the receive mode with any bandwidth centered around 28.000 MHz to 28.050 MHz. And, it is also present while tuning RIT. It sounds like synthesizer switching noise and its repetition rate increses when the VFO is set to fine tuning. I do not hear it on any other band. I also don't hear it over the entire 10 meter band, just the region as stated. Is this in other K3s or is there something going on that needs attention in only my radio? I called factory tech support over a week ago. Since they have not come up with an answer it seemed time to open it up to a wider group of users. Re: [Elecraft] K3 QSK
I can duplicate what might be called QSK thumps with high volume settings and using earphones or speakers. I have the choke change but have not modified low frequency response with larger caps. I think the thumps come on key up not key down. Everything is fine when I have the volume set at a normal level. I begin hearing thumps at a volume setting of 11 O'Clock. What I believe I am hearing though is not an artifact but just high band noise between dits that give an impression of thumps. The high band noise is being gated by TR switching. I suspect if I didn't live in a high noise environment I wouldn't here this. Mike Scott - AE6WA Tarzana, CA (DM04 / near LA) NAQCC 3535 K3-100 #508 / KX1 #1311 I sat down in TEST mode and tried all the combinations you mentioned again and can't produce thumps. I even tried every possible combination of AF/RF and MON levels with no thump. So I'm sri to say obviously something is different between our rigs and setups, but I can't imagine what. The only audio mod involving a change on the main board is to change a choke, not a cap. It reduces the resistance of the choke to improve the voltage regulation at the AF Amp. I've made that too. When I said my K3 was "stock" Elecraft, it does have the Elecraft-approved and documented mods made while writing the app notes. I asked wondering if the capacitor changes some have made to improve the low-frequency response were making the low frequency 'thumps' stronger and audible. If you've not done them, we should have similar rigs. Re: [Elecraft] Difficulty with K3 Utility RS232 Interface
I own two K3's and maintain 6 others for our contest group. I've never had even a hint of an issue with the RS232 interface loading/saving configs or firmware. I might add to all K3 owners as I've learned after many years of working with networking gear. Load new firmware when it is available, even if you think you don't need the new features. Even though companies much bigger than Elecraft (Like Cisco) try their best to maintain backward compatability, it doesn't always work. Even if you bypass the beta's (which are more stable than most releases from other guys), the Elecraft utility is so easy to maintain full releases it just doesn't make sense not to do it. 73, Terry __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 FM TX EQ memory settings
Hi Folks, Further to the FM / AM thread recently, is there a facility on the K3 to store EQ settings for each mode? I've tried to set the EQ for FM on a frequency and store it, but when I go to another memorised frequency the EQ does not seem to change. Also it would be good to save the mic gain and compression levels between SSB AM & FM. Have I missed something? I'm using the latest Beta firmware. Thanks in anticipation. -- John Petters Amateur Raduio Station G3YPZ www.traditional-jazz.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Difficulty with K3 Utility RS232 Interface
I will ditto Don's comment. I regularly test the firmware and have had no issues. I use the latest firmware files and I have rolled back once only to turn around and load the updated firmware beta again. Every release goes through thorough testing and I have had no issues other than suggestions. There may some feature bugs but these were always add-ons or updates to configurations that needed improvement. 73, Bill K9YEQ K2 #35; KX1 #35; K3 #1744; mini mods ATS-3B -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Don Wilhelm Sent: Thursday, June 25, 2009 5:40 PM To: K2ZLS Cc: ELECRAFT@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Difficulty with K3 Utility RS232 Interface Tony, While it may appear to be so on the surface, the K3 Utility and the .. ask the others in the Field Test or Development Teams and they should also verify that. As a Field Test member, I have loaded new and updated firmware 5 to 10 times more frequently than other users, and I have NEVER found a change in my configuration data after an upgrade, nor have I had a problem loading new firmware. I do have a few saved configuration files, but have never felt the need to do a restore - the K3 firmware is solid for all versions I have dealt with since I received my K3 in early January 2008. A configuration save is not required prior to doing an upgrade, although some may choose to do it. 73, Don W3FPR K2ZLS wrote: > Hi Don, > > >> The K3Utility versions are not related to firmware upgrades (only one >> exception that I recall) /www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
