Even though I normally use hearing aids when out in the world (but not when hamming) I find that Audio Gain set to Lo is fine for me. I also use the Heil HM-5 when not wearing the headset. [Elecraft] Problem with power output
Hi we just ended in the IARU Region I SSB Fieldday There was a strange behavior of my K3 which I don?t know from the CW-Contests where I normally take part. When transmitting 100W into a non 1:1 SWR the K3 reduced output power. That o.k. and normal. After the external symmetrical tuner hits SWR 1:1 the power stayed down at 30-40 watts with the power display showing 100W. We had to go back with the power knob to Zero and then back again to 100W to reach 100W again This problem did only show up in SSB not in CW. Is that normal? or is it a firmware bug? I?m using a K3/100 (S/N 2702) without KAT3 tuner (but it is already ordered) and I?m also using the newest beta software v3.30 -- /*73 de*/ /*Wolfgang DK9VZ*/ w...@dk9vz.com mailto:w...@dk9vz.com http://dk9vz.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Very few of the 7600,7700 and 7800 owners will recognize that K3 costing way less is equal or superior on some cases than theirs, surely they feel embarrased to have spent so much in such those Icoms when then we with $3K or less are doing the same job they do... Like Johnny, I have most of the mentioned Icom rigs as well as a K3, but I'm not sure I've been embarrassed about the Icom purchasing decisions. To Dave Yarnes' point, there are indeed some positive operating and ergonomic attributes of the Icoms that the K3 does not have -- but those same attributes also allow the K3 to be used in a manner not feasible with the Icoms (e.g., size and weight for grab-'n-go portable operations). So, looking at the feature set requires looking beyond what one product has or doesn't have to offer. From a performance perspective, I doubt I will ever see the positive benefits of the K3's strong signal handling performance. Living in a gated community with all its limitations mask that superior benefit -- as well as the other limitations already raised -- SSB Tx IMD and CW clicks from other stations. But at the same time, look at how much attention has been given to Tx performance in the last five years. We finally have a set of transceivers on the market that minimize transmitted spectrum in CW mode. Now that the CW keyed envelope and ALC issues have been solved, the next hurdle is keep pushing for better Tx IMD specs. Now that the CW keyed envelope and ALC issues have been solved, the next hurdle is keep pushing for better Tx IMD specs. When that happens, then I suspect more ops can then take advantage of the K3's close-spaced receive performance. I think a higher priority target should be transmitted phase noise. My neighbor's Icom generally wipes out most of whatever band he's on - at least +/- 100 KHz whether he's on CW or SSB. The K3 copes far better with the blocking effects than any other rig I've had but transmitted phase noise is impossible to avoid. BTW, the interesting new entry on the Sherwood list is the Flex-3000. While not in the K3 class, it shows rather good narrow IMD specs. Like the Flex-5000 it could stand some work on the LO noise front but blocking and LO noise data is still comparable with some other well known rigs - including the 7600 and K2. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] Mic and Headset
I am using a Labtec Axis-302 headset wired to the front 8 pin K3 socket and a 3.5mm/.25 adapter for the earpiece side. The mic audio from the supplied electret insert isn't quite as good for my voice as a Heil HC-5, so I replaced the electret with a HC-5 insert hot melt glued in place, plus a foam windsock over it. The result looks and sounds good. I find the HC-5 inserts in stick mics like the GM-5 a bit weak for my liking, the headset approach is better for me. Unfortunately the HC-5 insert as a replacement part seems hard to come by these days. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 - I'm curious as to what others are using for a mic and headset with the K3. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K1 U2 extraction help!
Gary wrote: I installed the RF board U2 backwards ... I'm trying to salvage the IC... I'm sure you've received enough input now to know that any attempt to salvage such is extremely ill-advised. It's possible to damage the RF board just removing two-lead components. The same thing applies to those resistor packs, though fortunately for the K1, all resistor packs used may be installed in any direction, regardless of directions in the manual. Next question, is there any reason not to use sockets in this location (or any other Elecraft kit for that matter)? Alan responded: In general, there are two reasons not to use sockets: 1. Increased cost. 2. Decreased reliability. There are better reasons, such as space availability, interference with other components around and above the IC, additional lead length and capacitive effects in RF circuits, and a few others I'm sure. What has been left UNaddressed is the use of sockets where not specified on *Elecraft* gear. It should be sufficient to say that Elecraft officially *strongly* discourages such, and voids warranty and other repair services when such enhancements have been performed by the builder. [Elecraft] MCU LD
Hello - I am building a K3 kit and all was going well with the checkout and test when I decided to download the latest version of the firmware. The download failed and now the K3 displays MCU LD whenever it is turned on. The K3 utility programs no longer can talk the to the K3. My original PC was using a USB to serial cable and worked fine through all the calibration steps. I used another USB to serial adapter that was compatible with the K3 USB to serial software but it did not work either. I tried yet another PC that has a native serial port, but no luck with that as well. In verbose mode, the utility program says it is sending ; at various baud rates and I presume it is getting no response. I suppose it is possible that the serial port failed after working for about 10 minutes, but it seems unlikely. All the boards seem to be seated well and I doubt it is a connection problem At this point, the K3 seems to have corrupted firmware, but it can no longer talk to a PC in order to do a new download. Also try forcing an MCU load (from page 45 of the owner's manual): Forcing a Firmware Download If you accidentally load an old or incompatible firmware version and find the K3 unresponsive, do the following: (1) unplug the K3 from the power supply and wait 5 seconds; (2) plug the power supply back in; (3) hold the K3's POWER switch in; after about 10 seconds, you'll see the TX LED flash (you'll also see MCU LD on the LCD); (4) load the correct firmware version. Jorge: I just tried out my new Yamaha CM500 as well. The K3's back panel has 3.5mm connectors for headset and phones. The Yamaha CM500 has the appropriate connectors for the back panel. I did not need the Yamaha's little in-line bias battery device. Instead I changed the K3's MAIN:MIC SEL menu option to Rear Panel, high input, bias on, which appears as RP.H BIAS. See the K3 Owner's manual pages 20 and 28 a summary on page 52. It sounds great, and feels like it's going to be a very comfortable headset at a very good price. Amazingly, the cheapest headset (URL below) of all of them worked best. Great audio reports (I often have people comment on the good audio while I'm running in a contest), very lightweight with not much pressure on the ears, and a nice long mic boom with a large foam windsock. I honestly can't imagine why anyone would pay more for a headset unless they preferred full-cup earphones or needed ambient noise cancellation. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for September 6th 7th, 2009
Good Evening, Twenty meters was weak while forty meters was noisy. This has become standard lately. But we had a good number of check ins. When I passed the net to Tom he must have turned on some power because I could not get my phones off my ears fast enough. I think my ear drums touched each other at one point! By the time he passed control back to me I had recovered but it was tough to follow the stations and Tom at the same time. I put one phone over my most deaf ear to mute him but left the gain where it was. Luckily my sinuses had closed due to the recent rain and cold weather or my ears would still be ringing. But the same sinuses gave me a slight headache all day long. Digging out weak signals with a headache is always challenging. I am glad this one was not too bad. Next I made and ate dinner but found myself wondering about my methods. How many of you put cayenne pepper on jalapenos? I have been working on a new recipe lately and once it is perfected I may not need a fire during the summer months :) Now if only I could get a bag of freshly roasted green chilis from Hatch, New Mexico. Green chilis and fresh tortillas were a good portion of my diet while attending UNM. When Pat was able to move down to Albuquerque she would leaven my diet with hot Thai food. We were constantly trying new types of peppers. By the time we left we both had cravings for habanero peppers. No wonder the jalapenos needed some hot pepper to give them a little kick! Someone was getting a strong thunderstorm so whole characters were gone at some points. But, due to the rain currently falling along with high winds I was not able to take a walk after the net. I did walk out on the deck and smell the breeze. I had swept the deck after all of the sweeping of my roof this week though it was hard to tell today. I finally got that leak fixed which has been plaguing me since the tree fell on the house. Working on the roof took a lot of sweeping and then each time I was done the breeze would kick up and bring down my needles. The rain kicked me off before I got the last bit done but, luckily, the rain is to cease and fine roof working weather will return soon. Another couple days and I will get all of the repairs done. I figured after all the patching I would simply recover the entire roof. That took longer than I would have thought. But the patches required were extensive. I had to cut down to the rafters and build my way back up in over a dozen places. This was the reason for re-covering the entire roof. Just like the snail on the side of the well I move two steps forward and one and half backward. I am making progress though :) Until next week stay well, 73, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] MCU LD
Hi Tom: After having built my K3 (s/n 2432) back in Jan, I agreed to build one for a good friend last month and ran into somewhat the same problems. The build went well, the unit received on the three bands from the XG2 at 1 microvolt and the K3 Utility would do the 5 and 50 watt TX Gain calibration as well as the filter set up in both the main Rx and the KRX3 sub receiver. The new K3 unit (s/n 3288) came with MCU Ver 3.14 and DSP Ver 2.16 installed and I decided to do an firmware upgrade to 3.19 / 2.17. The K3 Utility (Ver 1.2.8.10) is installed on a Dell D830 notebook and I'm using a native serial port directly to the K3 - this configuration has been used to do about 12 updates to my own K3 since I built it in Jan/09 all with no problems. When the K3 Utility was used to check the Firmware in the new K3, it confirmed the MCU, FPF and DSP1, but not DSP2. It acted as if the Aux DSP board for the KRX3 wasn't there. I tried to upload a full new Firmware vers set and it would load correctly the new MCU and FPF but would not load the new version of either DSP1 or DSP2. At the end of the load attempt the new MCU and FPF would remain but it would revert back to the original DSP1 Ver 2.16. I contacted K3Support and had prompt replies from both Dale and Gary and we tried various things. After checking and rechecking the connectors between the RF board and the Front Panel board, as well as the connectors between the DSP boards and the Front Panel board they asked me to measure the voltage at U1 pin 8 on the KIO3 board. It needs to be at least - 5 V DC. Mine was ok so then they sent me replacement Main and Aux DSP boards to try. Unfortunately the results were the same with the new Main DSP board. At this point Dale asked that I return the K3 to Aptos, which I did. It's there now and scheduled to be checked out Tues or Wed of this week. Good luck in getting yours fixed. I'll update you once I find out anything further with this one. 73, Doug VE3MV - Original Message - From: Georgens, Tom tom.georg...@netapp.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sunday, September 06, 2009 5:20 PM Subject: [Elecraft] MCU LD Hello - I am building a K3 kit and all was going well with the checkout and test when I decided to download the latest version of the firmware. Not sure what to try next. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 VS 7600 Sherwood List
One area where the K3 is also looking good is the transmitted noise level, ARRL members may wish to look at the on-line reviews and check the close in spectrum analyser plots of the K3 vs the rest when keying on CW. A near neighbour appears to be +/- 50 KHz wide on 80m with rubbish from his transmitter, now if he was 15 dB cleaner by running a K3 instead of his top of the range rig (it's not Icom by the way) some of us would be a bit happier. Maybe that's why multi-rig contest stations are migrating to the K3? 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 -- Hello Gentleman, I fully understand that Sherwood list is of high regard among many hams. If you're operating 3 kHz from any strong SSB station, the observed dynamic range (probably ~35 dB) is primarily limited by the cleanliness of his transmitted signal (TX IMD, phase noise, etc) no matter how good your receiver may be. In fact Sherwood's ranking (2 kHz IMD performance) only makes sense for CW, since it simulates performance of a CW receiver with strong stations spaced every 2 kHz. If you don't operate CW, then indeed there's probably little difference in any receivers since none of them can clean up transmitted SSB QRM. If you operate CW in crowded contests or large pileups, there's a vast performance difference (20-30 dB in dynamic range) in the rigs you have. 73, Bill -- Yahoo!香港提供網上安全攻略,教你如何防範黑客! 請前往 http://hk.promo.yahoo.com/security/ 了解更多! __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Bill and All, I think you hit the nail on the head Bill! Johnny seems to be very nicely equipped over there, and certainly should be proud of the choices he has there in his shack. However, if you aren't much interested in CW, a great deal of the refinement of the K3 can be pretty subtle. I suppose if I only operated SSB, I might be just as happy with a 7600, 7700 or 7800--maybe even happier in some respects. There are several operating conveniences the Icoms have which the K3 really doesn't effectively compete with. Even on CW this can be the case, unless you are really in a battle with QRM. Nonetheless, I'm still extremely impressed that I can pretty much stand toe to toe with the Icoms, save several thousands dollars, and still have a rig I can pick up with one hand--two fingers actually, if I grab the handle. Not everyone sees it that way though, and I understand their side of the comparison. It's just a matter of what your hot buttons are. I'm curious as to what others are using for a mic and headset with the K3. I currently have a Heil Pro Set Quite Phone with the DX (HC-4) element. I find a) the audio level in the headset to be rather low and b) just got some mic audio comments from a local saying the audio didn't sound like me at all. Very few of the 7600,7700 and 7800 owners will recognize that K3 costing way less is equal or superior on some cases than theirs, surely they feel embarrased to have spent so much in such those Icoms when then we with $3K or less are doing the same job they do,I have known in my county a couple of guys who after been using high price radios like the ones mentioned after been comparing them against my K3 has changed mind and sold theirs to buy this K3,you can't hide the truth, its there,K3 is a top performer no matter some one like or not, period. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 VS 7600 Sherwood List
I spent several hours comparing my K3 with an IC7700 a couple of weeks ago. I was hard pushed to hear any practical difference between the receivers in digging weak signals out of noisy band conditions, but what struck me most was that as soon as the Icom went on ssb tx (20m) the whole noise floor rose on the K3 dramatically (on the same band about 100kHz away). Onto transmit on the K3 with the IC7700 on rx, there was no sign of the K3 at all. I forget what transmit levels were being used but they were the same with both rigs. The K3 was on a G5RV and the IC7700 on an R8 with half a small garden's width between the antennas. I like the IC7700 a lot, it's VERY pretty and has really rich audio like the IC781 which it replaced at my friend's qth. However, it's also very big, heavy and expensive. Maybe that's why multi-rig contest stations are migrating to the K3? 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 -- __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Mic and Headset
The HC-4 element isn't supposed to sound like you; it's supposed to cut through QRM. Personally, I can't stand the harsh sound of it, but it does do what it's supposed to do. If you want a mic element that sounds like you, you should be using the HC-5. It is voice-tailored also, but much less extreme than the HC-4. I use a Pro Set with HC-5 and get excellent audio reports. Don't forget to set the config AF GAIN parameter to HI. This is important for the Pro Set. Re: [Elecraft] Mic and Headset
I also use the Heil headset but the one I have is the original before there were dfiierent models except for the microphone and I use the HC4 element as it is my contest use mic. I have teh original Gold Line for day to day use and it has the full range and the HC5 elements in it and yes, it does have a different sound than the HC4 element. That is by design - the HC4 is designed for cutting through in contest use and the HC5 is somewhat wider in its response to be a bit closer to normal. The full range element is of course the one you want to use if your intent is to sound like normal and don't need the advantages of the HC4 and HC5 elements. 73, de Jim KG0KP - Original Message - From: Peter Chamalian w...@arrl.net To: 'Elecraft Reflector' elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sunday, September 06, 2009 7:07 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Mic and Headset I'm curious as to what others are using for a mic and headset with the K3. As soon as the SSB transmitter (various Yaesus and Kenwoods at 100w) goes into transmit, a loud WHOOSH is heard on the CW band. The operator doesn't have to speak, just closing the PTT is sufficient -- in fact there is no detectable speech sound, indicating that it is not related to the RF that is transmitted on purpose! Bandpass filters eliminated the problem on different bands, but of course could not do anything when we operated on the same band. The antennas were located and oriented to reduce coupling, but still it was a severe problem. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
