This is what | love about Elecraft, we complain and/or suggest things
to improve and they try to add or fix it. Most of the time they
succeed in making us all happy.

I have no doubt the audio is going to improve big time with more bass response.

[Elecraft] K1 s/n2258 and new filter kit

2009-09-18 Thread Curt
Since completing this K1-4 nearly three years ago for 40,30,20,15, have had
a lot of fun using it at home and park bench portable. Yesterday, after
building a 2-band filter for 80 17M, made a few QSOs on those bands as
well. I've found the K1 a very useful QRP rig for my purposes.

Awhile ago, recall reading some chatter about Elecraft offering a filter
board kit for 20,17,1510 once the sunspots started coming back. I suppose
with all the K3 work the K1 is probably far down on priorities. But, I for
one would happily be first in line to order such a kit if offered.
Alternately, has anyone successfully configured a 4-band filter for these
bands on their own?

[Elecraft] K3 -AM Broadcast on 1800 Khz?

listened for awhile and Ohio was mentioned in the commercials several times.
I live about 70 miles from Ohio and couldnt find the station anywhere else
on my K3 after a quick search. I'm using a horizontal 160 meter loop antenna
with no other indications of images or harmonics from broadcast signals. Any

2009-09-18 Thread Jack Smith
*Looks like second harmonic of WFIA* (900 KHz ) in Louisville KY.

Could be radiated by WFIA or could be generated locally to you.
Temporary installation of a high pass filter with a 1500 KHz cutoff
between your K3 and the antenna would demonstrate whether it is
generated inside the K3 or externally.

[Elecraft] K3 -AM Broadcast on 1800 Khz?

2009-09-18 Thread Ken Kopp
Hi Steve,

Assuming you listened long enough to hear the station's
call letters or ID slogan you can do a Google search and
probably learn their assigned frequency, which is likely to
be 900 kHz.

It's possible that the 1800 kHz signal is a mixing product
involving strong external signals, but I'd suspect a simple
2nd harmonic. Do you have the general coverage module
in your K3?

Second harmonics from BC stations are not uncommon,
especially when using a good antenna on 160M. (;-)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 -AM Broadcast on 1800 Khz?

2009-09-18 Thread Jack Smith
Paul:

A few years ago, there was a clearly readable, consistent signal on the
low end of 3.5 MHz band from the 3rd harmonic of an AM station in
Philadelphia. I can't recall the exact frequency, may have been 1220 KHz
that I heard at 3660 KHz.

Philadelphia is around 150 miles from here so it wasn't a case of
locally generated harmonics or receiver products. It must be radiated
from the station. And, the modulation was clear, further evidence that
it was not locally induced.

After hearing it for several days, I called the FCC watch desk in DC.
The response I received was that since the harmonic was only in an
amateur radio band no action would be taken. I left it at that, figuring
that if I could hear the signal from 150 miles, the local 80 meter
operators in Philadelphia must be hearing it and they would take care of
the problem.

Don't know if I got a guy who didn't want to do his job or if that is
the new approach after almost all the field offices and field
enforcement was shut down. I know that back in the stone ages when I was
a field engineer at the Detroit FCC office, I would have found it worth
investigating.

http://www.jl3amk.org/en/index.htm#k1_mods_12m_10m

In particular, the references at that URL refer to a 2006 posting by Wayne
with details of a 4-band board such as you desire:

http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2006-January/051400.html

I've not tried these myself, but they look interesting.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 -AM Broadcast on 1800 Khz?

2009-09-18 Thread Paul Christensen
After hearing it for several days, I called the FCC watch desk in DC. The
response I received was that since the harmonic was only in an amateur
radio band no action would be taken.

As I recall, harmonic energy in Part 73 AM broadcast services still falls
under the general emission limitations under Section 73.44(b):

Emissions removed by more than 75 kHz must be attenuated at least 43 + 10
Log (Power in watts) or 80 dB below the
unmodulated carrier level, whichever is the lesser attenuation, except for
transmitters having power less than 158 watts, where the attenuation must be
at least 65 dB below carrier level.

Interference to the reception of other services is addressed in Section
73.44(c):

Should harmful interference be caused to the reception of other broadcast
or non-broadcast stations by out of band emissions, the licensee may be
directed to achieve a greater degree of attentuation than specified in
paragraphs (a) and (b) of this section.

So, in the event the FCC was to dismiss a future complaint, I would bring
these sections to their attention. The first step in resolving these
matters is to be prepared with knowledge of the rules and work directly with
the station before getting the Commission involved. In some cases,
second-harmonic notch filters may be required in addition to the AM
transmitter's existing LP network.

It's entirely dependent on the setting of Shift/Width in CW or Hi/Low in SSB.

extend the passband to include the low frequencies, you don't hear anything

the change does is provide the /capability/ to reproduce the bass tones if you

[Elecraft] Transmit on VFO B

2009-09-18 Thread Oliver Grossmann
Hi,
I know it was discussed before, but i haven't found a final statement in
the archives of the List.
My last info is it is impossible to Transmit on VFO B during Output
Filter Switching and QSK.

I'm not sure if somebody ask to switch off QSK in this split mode.
Are there any plans to have such a feature in the future? (I really like
this on my TS-850 in combination with N1MM)

Thanks Olli, DH2WQ

Yes.

Several things are at play here. First, when a transmitter is producing
strong harmonic content, something is WRONG. It's either broken or
mistuned. Second, we have the effects of the deregulation of broadcast
engineering of the Reagan years (remmeber the rants against big government
and for untrammelled free enterprise?), so the requirements that stations
have licensed engineers on duty are long gone, and the FCC lacks the staff
and funding to do much of its work still mandated by its own rules.
Nowadays, a single broadcast engineer is likely to be responsible for a
half dozen or more stations, even in major markets. Contrast this with 30
years ago when many major market stations employed 3 or more full time
engineers, most of them competent to do transmitter work.

For 20 years, I lived within 4 miles of virtually all the FM and TV
broadcasters in Chicago, and had a gain antenna on the roof that fed a
vintage Technics ST9030 FM tuner with a rock solid analog front end that
had a four-gang tuning capacitor. Only once did I hear a spur from any of
those stations, it was during an overnight maintenance period, and it was
gone in a few hours.

If you monitor the topband reflector (160M), you'll occasionally see posts
about broadcast spurs on 160M, sometimes strong. It rarely takes more than
a few weeks for pressure from hams on the FCC and those stations to clean
up their act. The key words to the station are something in your
transmitter is broken, and is likely to fail completely. You should fix it
soon before it takes you off the air and you lose advertising revenue.

[Elecraft] K3: Make Monitor level track AF level?

2009-09-18 Thread Randy Farmer
I'm finally coming to terms with K3 3260, born July '09. It's at last
fully integrated into the station, and the diversity receive
capability just blows what's left of my mind. This thing is like a
race car: it rolls off the trailer pretty damn fast, but once you
start fine-tuning it it just gets better and better. To further
belabor the race car analogy, my trusty old FT-1000D is like a NASCAR
stocker, big and heavy but a bulletproof performer. The K3 is like an
Indycar or a Formula I car, maybe somewhat more delicate and fussy,
but able to perform at a considerably higher level once it's set up
and the driver learns to get the most from it.

Now that I (mostly) know how to operate the K3, I suppose I'm
qualified to start picking nits about how certain things work. The
thing that bothers me the most is the Monitor function, especially
for CW. For any serious DX or contest work I always use headphones,
but I sometimes like to just grab the paddle and work somebody using
the station speaker. I normally keep the Monitor level set at about
20-25, since that's what I find most comfortable when I'm using
headphones. When I'm using the speaker, I can hardly hear the
sidetone or the spot tone. If I go ahead and crank up the Monitor
level to where I can hear it in the speakers, the next time I use
headphones I'll forget to readjust the level and the sidetone will
practically rip my head off. Unfortunately, the Monitor level is
independent from the AF level so just turning down the volume, which
I always do when using phones, doesn't keep me from getting blasted.

What I would like to see would be a firmware change that allows the
Monitor level to be adjusted to a percentage of the main receive
level, or perhaps set to a specific offset value in dB, such that the
relative levels between the main audio and the monitor signal always
track as the AF control is varied. I take the audio from the K3 rear
panel SPKRS jack to route into my station audio switching for either
the headphones or the speaker, so I would rather see it done this way
than by making a Monitor level change when the hardware detects that
the phones have been plugged in.

I've looked through the reflector archives and can't seem to find any
posts that address my concern. That doesn't mean there aren't any; I
just didn't see them. Does this suggestion sound like a useful
firmware tweak to anyone else here?

2009-09-18 Thread Steve Ellington
Randy:
I have just the opposite problem. With my 32 ohm headphones I have to crank
up the sidetone to 40 but down to 15 with the 8 ohm speaker. It wouldn't be
so bad if I didn't have to listen to the tone while adjusting. There's 2
problems with this method. If I want to change sidetone level while in QSO,
I miss words the other station is sending or have to pause my sending while
adjusting the level. Why must that tone be present? I know of no other rig
that does this. If I remove my headphones and start to call CQ, I blast the
entire house with my sidetone. I quickly remember that I forgot to turn it
down before removing my cans. So I push the sidetone button and blast
everyone again until I can get it cranked down. This is a very strange
system. If I wanted to hear the tone, I could just press the Pitch button!
Having the sidetone track with the AF gain is nice as long as it's also
independently adjustable but for some reason there are some ops who are
strongly opposed to thisSomething to do with riding the AF gain for weak
signals etc Anyway. I would just like to be able to disable the tone
when adjusting the level.

Re: [Elecraft] [K1] K1 U2 extraction help!

2009-09-18 Thread AD6XY

You probably made the best choice for you. If the chip is cheap - which it is
just cut the pins and remove individually.

It is fairly easy to remove such a chip using hot air or thick tinned copper
wire. You need to be careful with hot air but if you mask off the rest of
the board with a piece of aluminium with a hole in it to view just the pins
and heat from the bottom you can heat all pins at one and the chip will drop
off. I have used this technique many times but usually I am interested in
salvaging the component and not the PCB. If you get it too hot you can burn
the PCB. I have an SMD hot air cun that makes this operation very easy. I
assume you don't have one - so perhaps best to not try.

The other way is with copper wire. Solder a thick piece of copper wire to
all the pins at the base. Small piece of copper shim wold do as well. Then
heat this with a hot iron so all the solder for all the pins melts. The chip
will drop out.

I wish elecrat would start to go on the SMD route. Removing SMD components
is much easier. When you learn how the larger sized SMDs so are much easier
to work with than leaded parts.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Make Monitor level track AF level?

2009-09-18 Thread Randy Farmer

It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to listen to the tone while

sidetone level while in QSO, I miss words the other station is
sending or have to pause my sending while adjusting the level. Why
must that tone be present? ... If I wanted to hear the tone, I could
just press the Pitch button!

Or the Spot button. I thought that's what it's there for. I quite
agree. The pitch adjustment on the K3 has seemed weird to me from day
one. Why not just be able to adjust the Pitch in receive mode and
hear the received audio tone change in real time? I certainly don't
understand why it's necessary to mute the receive audio while the
pitch is being adjusted. I definitely don't know what's going on
under the software hood when the pitch is adjusted, but it seems to
me it can't be all that much different from what happens when you
just turn the Shift knob on the front panel. I expected to hear that
effect the first time I played with the pitch, but that wasn't what
happened. It sent me to the manual to see if I had screwed up the
configuration somehow.

And as long as we're asking for changes, why not make the CW and Data
mode monitor levels independent? I sure don't need to listen to
transmitted PSK tones like I do CW sidetone.

Having the sidetone track with the AF gain is nice as long as it's
also independently adjustable but for some reason there are some ops
who are strongly opposed to thisSomething to do with riding the

How about a configuration item such as MonTk = ON or MonTk = OFF?

Anyway. I would just like to be able to disable the tone when

[Elecraft] Strange sound

2009-09-18 Thread jpk5lad
I've never seen this situation written about but I've just come
across a very strange sound on my K3 - S/N-1068. With the dial
on 29.492.6 USB I get a continuous CW sounding signal. It
alternates a dot, then a dash then a space. If it were truly CW is
would be considered poorly sent CW and the speed is about 10-
12 WPM. The lengths of the characters are not exactly the same
each time but it never stops. I discovered it yesterday and
wanted to make sure it was not just a one time thing.

I can switch modes and it remains. Removing the antenna does
not stop it, actually makes it a little stronger with the noise level
dropped. I'm using firmware 3.30 beta. I tried on the SUB
receiver and I hear nothing.

It smacks, a bit, of the beginning of a science fiction TV show.
Any clue as to what I might be hearing?

Jim - K5LAD

Once these boards are gone, I'll probably NOT reorder more boards to be made
by FAR Circuits. However, if someone else might want to take up the task,
I'll be happy to make the PCB layout available to you and I'm sure that Fred
at FAR Ckts would be just as tickled to make them for you as he would
be for
me.

For what it's worth, one 8 X 11 'sheet' of these PC boards contains
about
54 (6 X 9) PC boards.

[Elecraft] BC band station on 1800 kc

2009-09-18 Thread Telegrapher
Check your antenna and feedline connections as well as your connection to a
ground. Loose items there could be causing diode action inducing extra
signals. Happens here in the desert with things being so dry. Dry soil most of
the time until you get a rain, then it swells up, then shrinks again as drying
comes. That's another reason for multiple connections to good grounds out
here. I don't have a broadcast station for about 10 miles but occasionally i
get overload on some freq's. Might be an easy fix and then it might require
some extra effort.

Dick,

The normal resistance is very high (receive periods) and very close to
zero during transmit (or TUNE).
Your 15 ohms is unusual.
Check the gate voltage of Q9 - it should be close to 5 volts. Also
check the soldering of Q9. Be ceertain the source connection has had
enough heat to flow the solder out onto both the solder pad and the Q9 lead.

It can be installed the same way as beta releases; see instructions on our
 web site.

Please carefully read all the release notes for this revision, below. There
are many changes besides the low-frequency AF improvement.

One additional point I'd like to make regarding this. Remember that the K3
is a *communications* radio, first and foremost. This is why the NORMalized
low end of the AF passband is set to 100 Hz in SSB and AM modes. (That's a
2.8 kHz WIDTH, a center frequency of 1.5 kHz, and thus a lo-cut value of
0.10 kHz.) Putting the filter low edge at 100 Hz at all three points in the
receive chain -- crystal filter, 15 kHz IF, and AF -- minimizes
 adjacent-channel low-frequency QRM.

Now, with the release of this new firmware, you can override our sensible
low-frequency cutoff :) When you adjust SHIFT, WIDTH, or LOCUT such that the
passband is skewed lower, you'll get much richer/fuller bass, but you are of
course inviting additional QRM on the low end. So be ready to NORMalize
 again if necessary.

Let me know how your testing goes.

 * IMPROVED RECEIVE LOW-FREQUENCY RESPONSE in
AM, SSB and CW modes. (For best results, use headphones or external

sets the low-frequency bound to about 100 Hz in AM and SSB modes.
But by using SHIFT, WIDTH or LO CUT, you can extend the audio
 response to around 50 Hz. User-configurable NORM1 and NORM2
settings, or presets I/II, can then be used to store desired values
(per-mode). The two lowest MAIN:RX EQ ranges (50 and 100 Hz)
can be used to further enhance bass.

 * SUB RX NOISE BLANKER NOW FULLY INDEPENDENT OF MAIN:
This includes the on/off state and NB LEVEL settings. Note: Set
CONFIG:NB SAVE to YES if you wish to keep the noise blanker ON
even when changing bands. The NB on/off state is stored on a per-band
basis for both main and sub receivers.

 * DSP INTERNAL ERROR MONITORING: The DSPs now do additional
self-checking so they can automatically detect and prevent any type of rare
AF output anomaly. If you hear anything unexpected, please report
the associated information to Elecraft. While in the TECH MD menu entry,
tap 1 (main) or 2 (sub) to display the most recent data, shown in

If it is “”, no error has been detected. After writing down the values,
tap CLR to reset them, allowing additional errors to be trapped if
 necessary.

 * PL TONE DEVIATION ADJUSTABLE: Tapping '1' in CONFIG:FM DEV
changes menu entry name to PL DEV and allows setting PL tone deviation
from 300-600 Hz in 30-Hz steps (default is 360 Hz).

 * EU REPEATER 1750 HZ PL TONE BURST: In FM mode, if PL TONE is
selected and the tone pitch is set to 1750 Hz (using the PITCH switch), a
500 ms tone burst at 1750 Hz will be transmitted on each activation
of PTT. As a reminder, the -T icon will flash briefly at the start of each
 of
each transmission, then turn off until you’ve finished transmitting.

 * EXTENDED 6-METER TUNING RANGE: The VFO can now be tuned
down to 44 MHz to monitor signals that may be correlated with 6-meter
band openings. Since the K3 has narrow band-pass filters, loss rapidly
increases as the VFO is tuned below 49 MHz (-34 dB typ. at 45 MHz). If a
preamp is in use ahead of the band pass filter (such as an Elecraft PR6),
 the
noise figure may still be adequate for monitoring strong 44-49 MHz signals.

 * KEYPAD (1-9) SWITCH TONES WORKING FOR MV AND VM, M1-x:

According to the FCC's database, WCER reduces power from 500-watts to
75-watts during their Post-Sunset Service Authorization (PSSA). This time
of year, don't look for much interference of any kind after the late

[Elecraft] K3 Audio Response - Version 3.33 Firmware

2009-09-18 Thread Paul Christensen
I have attached links to three .JPG images of the K3's audio response as
measured at
the headphone jack with SpectraPlus FFT software. Response passband was
normalized for both modes. SSB
is measured through the 6K filter, and CW through the 8-pole 2.8 kHz filter.
However, V3.33 SSB was taken with Fc = 1.35.

It would have made more sense to capture the responses such that three SSB
plots would overlay on one graph and three CW plots on a second, but that
took too much time in waiting for the firmware to load between plots.
Still, you can see radical differences between firmware versions in the
kinks below. Rx Band-1 EQ seems operational now too :-)).

http://216.229.20.37/images/K3-V325.jpg
http://216.229.20.37/images/K3-V330.jpg
http://216.229.20.37/images/K3-V333.jpg

As you can see, CW with V3.25 has the strongest low-end response relative to
1 kHz, but that can be compensated for with the first two EQ bands. Even as
it is, if you draw a horizontal line mid-way through the V3.33 plots, that
represents roughly +/- 2.5 dB from 20 Hz through 3.5 kHz. Not too shabby
for a
communications receiver.

As a further experiment, I just added 3 dB to Rx bands 1-3 and the response
is now essentially +/- 0dB between 20Hz and 3.5 kHz in SSB through the 6K
filter and Fc = 1.35. You can lay the ruler flat on the response.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware preview: Much-improved receive AF bass response

2009-09-18 Thread David Lankshear
Wowee! This could save me the trouble of modifying DSP board hardware.
I've asked to be

a beta tester on this, as I often browse the AM stations and have a 13kHz
filter installed.

I have 2 x K3's to modify and the first one is already stripped down and the
components

to be removed are marked. I intended starting the mod after lunch today,
viz in 45 minutes.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Audio Response - Version 3.33 Firmware

2009-09-18 Thread David Lankshear
I spent much of the evening browsing AM shortwave stations and can confirm
that the additional bass lift capability in 3.33 can be used to give a much
warmer sound. I reduced the first couple of equaliser bands to +3dB and
with the full bandwidth possible with a 13kHz filter, a slight shift below
the FC Norm of 1.5 gives much warmer audio. I did find that adjustment
varied depending on the voice being listened to in order to get the most
satisfying result. In all cases, I did not go below the 1.05 setting to
achieve the most satisfactory sound with most being around the 1.30 mark.

Similar results were heard with SSB, and brought the K3 into line with good
sound from my K2 and a comms Rx, both of which rendered a warmer audio than
the K3 prior to beta 3.33. Many thanks, Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Audio Response - Version 3.33 Firmware

2009-09-18 Thread Steve Ellington
I've just been listening all evening with a big smile on my face :*) This
is beautiful. Having the LF audio seems to make the entire spectrum sound
better. Even QRN is more pleasant to listen to. Thanks Elecraft! What took
so long? Why was bass chopped off in the first place?

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Audio Response - Version 3.33 Firmware

I have attached links to three .JPG images of the K3's audio response as
 measured at
the headphone jack with SpectraPlus FFT software. Response passband was
 normalized for both modes. SSB
is measured through the 6K filter, and CW through the 8-pole 2.8 kHz
 filter.

Rx Band-1 EQ seems operational now too :-)).

 http://216.229.20.37/images/K3-V330.jpg
 http://216.229.20.37/images/K3-V333.jpg

As you can see, CW with V3.25 has the strongest low-end response relative
 to
1 kHz, but that can be compensated for with the first two EQ bands. Even
 as
it is, if you draw a horizontal line mid-way through the V3.33 plots, that
represents roughly +/- 2.5 dB from 20 Hz through 3.5 kHz. Not too shabby
 for a
 communications receiver.

As a further experiment, I just added 3 dB to Rx bands 1-3 and the
 response
is now essentially +/- 0dB between 20Hz and 3.5 kHz in SSB through the 6K
filter and Fc = 1.35. You can lay the ruler flat on the response.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Make Monitor level track AF level?

2009-09-18 Thread Brett Howard
This was asked for in the past and it turns out that more people wanted
it the way it is at the moment but it was not really a landslide it was
fairly balanced.

Personally I agree and would like the option to have it track the AF
knob. But this hasn't really risen to the top of the list (if it even
made the list) considering that it was the less popular option last
time.

[Elecraft] WTB: K3 13Khz Filter and/or BCB-BPF

2009-09-18 Thread Brett Howard
I've been considering just ordering one on the site... Not really a
need as I've already got the 8 filters in there that I like but I
wouldn't mind being able to get the radio totally open just to allow for
maximum flexibility.

If anyone has a Broadcast Band BPF or a 13Khz filter that is surplus to
their needs I'd may be interested.

[Elecraft] K1 NB Modification

2009-09-18 Thread Brett Howard
I remember somewhere on the net reading about some mods to make the
K1-NB a little bit more aggressive. I've been unable to find this as of
late and would like to in the event that a few free moments presents its
self in the next month or so...

Anyone recall where that may be?
