[Elecraft] Any solution to the audio blast issue yet ?
Hi all, I wonder what the status of the audio 'artifact' or blast is. According to PA4N, who uses F/W 3.30, it still happens, be it rarely. As a headphone user, such audio blast is quite unacceptable to me and therefore I hope Elecraft is addressing this issue with some priority. Can Lyle or Wayne comment on this ?? Thanks ! Re: [Elecraft] K3 coarse tuning
Beta firmware currently out in field test does have a choice of coarse tuning increments of 0.1, 0.5 and 1 KHz. There is still a user choice of rounding off (or not) the last digits when coarse tuning via the RIT/XIT knob. So you will have plenty of tuning rate choices. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 Re coarse tuning in the next beta release. Note Wayne's comment re having 0.5KHz increment available. YES please! Hi, Downloaded and installed V3.35 V2.34 successfully. However using the RF Gain calibration procedure in the K3 Utility V1.2.8.10 seems to have messed up my Sub RX. The Main RX is OK. [Elecraft] Happy Birthday K2 #337
Ten years ago today, K2 #337 came to life! In the year or so after that, I added most of the options to it, leaving it a QRP K2 and using it as my primary rig all this time (only rig most of the time). Last spring I did the A-to-B upgrades and other miscellaneous updates, plus added the KAT100 and KPA100 in an EC2 (built by Lyle, KK7P) and have been operating partly QRO since then. I've been licensed since 1961 and my K2 has given me more enjoyment than all my other rigs put together! Both the construction and maintenance of it as well as the operation. Over this 10 years, I've read this reflector almost daily (I know, I should get a real life!), and though I have had my frustrations with some of the postings here, overwhelmingly it has been useful, educational and sometimes entertaining! Special thanks to Don, W3FPR, for his outstanding contributions here!! And thanks to the technical support team at Elecraft, in my case, particularly Gary, AB7MY! Re: [Elecraft] K3 coarse tuning
That seems a bit extreme. On an average day, lots of 80m, 40m, and even upper HF band activity already tends toward being channelized to the nearest 1 KHz, and if anything it helps spread out the QSO's. All that goes by the wayside (as it should) when activity picks up for contests and DX pileups. Besides, whatever influence the --OPTION-- for 0.5 KHz spacing in the K3 may have on channelization, it is more than offset by the K3's excellent narrow filter capability. 73, Dave AB7E Brett Howard wrote: Man I hope things like this coupled with the loss of morse code aren't the beginning of ham radio becoming CB... ~BTH On Fri, 2009-09-25 at 16:44 +1000, Chris Meagher wrote: Re coarse tuning in the next beta release. Re: [Elecraft] RFI noise
A different approach might work better: what these firms are practising is fraud or misrepresentation and we get a lot of that over here. Passing it off as something which it is not as any other consumer goods is illegal. It's also illegal to use an agency sticker like that. Over here we have the Sales (Descriptions) Act, but it's still a headache getting anyone to do anything about it, but it is another lever against the seller and/or importer. David G3UNA I lost a PC power supply, ordered a pair of replacements from Tiger Direct. They were neither half-KW monsters nor their cheapest supply. It had VDE/UL/FCC stickers, ALL of the agency certifications. . It seemed pretty clear the supplies had passed agency approvals with the filter components in place, but once they had the sticker they stopped putting those parts on the board. [Elecraft] IF Buffer Noise Reduction Mods
I just finished installing the IF buffer and noise reduction mods and have to say that I found the IF Buffer mod less painfull than the Noise reduction one. Remove and replace one part; of which the most difficult thing was getting the new SMT resistor into position. Once there, I used a very small jewelers screwdriver to hold in place, put a little solder on the end of iron tip and then spot soldered one end; then I could solder the other end, finally going back to the other end and properly soldering it. I did not cut the SMT in half to remove it, found it very easy to use solder wick and then heat the resistor so it would slide off. The noise reduction mod took a lot more time getting the diodes and resistors trimmed, soldered, and into position. One thing to be aware of is the resistor is tied to the cathode of the diode for the components on the left side of the K3 and the resistor is tied to the anode of the diode for the components in the center mod. [Elecraft] K3 coarse tuning steps
I don't see any threat to us drifting towards CB operational habits because of radios having the ability to step to / in 1 or 5 kHz steps. We've been this way for years. Those of us who have a penchant for order tend to use even frequencies. Most nets follow this format ... probably for simplicity. For the most part I'm a CQ'er and always call on a specific kHz rather than a random dial setting. It's not a big deal ... just the way I follow my particular sense of order. It avoids rounding off of log book entries, too. (:-)) 73! [Elecraft] K3: DVR open ground problem
K3 #24 was upgraded to include the DVR earlier this year. It worked fine while testing just after installation and configuring. I used the DVR a few times for contesting, but not much recently. I noticed recently that any recording I make has the hum of an open mic (ground or shield?) superimposed on the voice signal. Seems like there might be a bad connection, but looking at the schematic this makes no sense - to have this problem with the DVR only. The audio straight from the mic should have this problem as well. The mic audio is fine though. Anyone have experience with a problem like this? I will do the usual - uninstalling, re-installing (reseating the connector), but since the mic signal at the connector is digital I don't think this will help. Re: [Elecraft] Any solution to the audio blast issue yet ?
If I may chime in here, I hope very strongly that nobody is using deep- in-the-ear type earbuds with the K3 or any other radio. TO DO SO MIGHT RUIN YOUR EARS. I have some Shure deep-in-the-ear earbuds that I use with my iPod on airplane flights. They have wonderful fidelity and also almost completely shut out the roar of the jet engines. BUT, they take about ten seconds minimum to get out of my ears. If some radio produced an anomalously loud blast while using them, your ears could be ruined before you could react. I read an article a while back about an engineer who lost his hearing in just such an accident. In the old days, many soundcard manufacturers installed their soundcards with a default of full volume. This guy was trying a new soundcard using deep-in-the-ear earbuds. By the time he could get them out of his ears, he had permanent damage. 73, Oliver Johns W6ODJ On 25 Sep 2009, at 12:07 AM, Enno J. I wonder what the status of the audio 'artifact' or blast is. Hi Enno FWIW I have been installing and using the latest Betas as they are released. I use headphones at the rig many hours a day and have yet to experience the blast. Whatever it is, I'm not triggering it [so far] on K3 #2887. It's not an issue hr. Are you saying *you* have heard the blast? If so, what were you doing at the time? What mode, what activity, what controls were you adjusting or had you recently adjusted? [Elecraft] help: k2 rf noise prob
#5957 w/ DSP, NB, SSB seems to have developed an RF noise problem. With the radio setup this way: antenna connected to dummy load, DSP off, NB off, AGC off, CW mode, AUD fully advanced I get the following symptoms: as RF gain is advanced a frying noise comes up, reaching about S5 at max RF. switching preamp/attenuator in and out doesn't change the problem noise. I can hear real RF noise from the dummy load and preamp increase/decrease on top of the problem noise. changing the XTAL filter setting does change the noise. as the RF control is reduced from max to min, at about 2/3 max a soft pop is heard, the the S-meter reading goes all the way to max [as if the RF gain were fulling off] and then trails back towards S-0 as it was before the pop. Afterwards, the S-meter reading continues to max as normal. It's as if the AGC were on, but it isn't. switching AGC in/out doesn't alter the noise. switching DSP in alters the noise as the DSP circuit tries to handle it. As compared to the no-DSP condition, the noise with DSP comes up as brief static spikes that eventually blend into sound of the noise w/o DSP. switching NB in/out doesn't alter the noise. In view of the above, I'm thinking that this noise is coming from Rcv Mixer [TUF-1] - Post-Mixer Amp [Q22] circuit area. Nothing before that seems to effect it, and the XTAL filter definitely reduces it. Any quick insights or trouble shooting steps that can help me reduce/eliminate this noise would be appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] K3 FSK power transients
Hi Dave, Have you tried AFSK instead? If so, do you see similar power transients? Depending on what software is generating the tones and assuming the audio level is set properly, it is possible that AFSK might produce a cleaner signal than what you are seeing in FSK. Operationally, they are the same, i.e. all the same features and operating techniques that you use in FSK D can also be used in AFSK A (well, except maybe for using CW paddles to transmit - that doesn't work in AFSK A). Just another idle thought, but I wonder whether the TX Gain calibration would make a difference? When I try FSK I don't see any sign of similar transients, but my power metering might not be able to respond quickly enough to see them if they were there, so that doesn't necessarily mean a lot. 73, Rich VE3KI Dave Hachadorian K6LL wrote: I'm getting my K3's set up for the CQWW DX RTTY, and notice that there is a significant variation in power output whenever the FSK goes from mark to space or space to mark. Re: [Elecraft] RFI noise
On Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 03:17:26PM -0400 I heard the voice of N2TK, and lo! it spake thus: I have had good success with PC Power Cooling supplies. Have replaced all of the cheaper PC supplies with theirs. Got rid of the noise. I second this. Also, even ignoring RFI completely, I only use PCPC supplies in my systems, because they have a long history of being built *solid*. Reliable, clean output, and will give the amps it's spec'd at. Would you put a power supply on your rig that regulates at 5% or worse across its load range? So don't do it to your computer either :) -- Matthew Fuller, N3TZJ n3...@n3tzj.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] OT Coax Cables
Hope this is ok to post. Being tired of 25' and 50' lengths of coax I have been going to RF Connections: Joel Knoblock - W3RFC r...@therfc.com for a variety of long and very short cables to neaten up the shack. They do great work at reasonable prices and the service is beyond reproach. 72, John N0LT What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal. [Elecraft] Different mode
I want to try FSK144 and JT-65A on Monday. Should i be in USB or Data mode? Should i stay below the 30W level? First time to try this on 6 meters or any band for that matter so not sure what parameters i should be using or operating under. I'm plugged directly into the sound card on the Pc so i'll have to play with the transmit level a bit i suspect to keep the signal as clean as possible. If i set the transmit signal up for PSK31 then it should be ok with the other modes i would think? Maybe maybe not. Any help here? As far as keying the transmitter, it should work with VOX turned on right? [Elecraft] K3: Clearing the ATU memories?
I just relocated my shack and extended my window-line feeder to my Cobra dipole. It changed the tuning. The ATU has no problem finding new combinations to retune on every band. However, I suppose I should clear the memories and get a fresh start. Right? How do I do that? I'm running FW 3.27. I can't find an entry in CONFIG to clear the memories. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Clearing the ATU memories?
Go to the menu to tell the radio you have an ATU and press CLR. On Fri, 2009-09-25 at 20:02 -0600, KM5Q wrote: I just relocated my shack and extended my window-line feeder to my Cobra dipole. Re: [Elecraft] K3 coarse tuning
I checked my VFO CRS and it has 5.0, 2.5, 1, and .1 khz , I have v3.30 so what am I missing here? Bob KB1FRW Dave G4AON wrote: Beta firmware currently out in field test does have a choice of coarse tuning increments of 0.1, 0.5 and 1 KHz. YES please! Re: [Elecraft] K3 FSK power transients
I just noticed some issues like that last weekend when operating the SAC CW contest. All off a sudden when tuning up on 10m a big bang occured in my linear amplifier. Now nothing got hurt it just blew the fuses. This amp used to be driven with 200W and I never ever had any issues before. Of course it could be the amp and I haven´t measured the K3 to confirm if there are any high power spikes due to poor ALC regulation. I was tuning with fast dots from the keyer. Now I was thinking if the TXGain is set too high maybe that could do something? I guess I have to investigate but I simply haven´t had the time. Jim SM2EKM -- Dave Hachadorian wrote: I'm getting my K3's set up for the CQWW DX RTTY, and notice that there is a significant variation in power output whenever the FSK goes from mark to space or space to mark. One of these K3's is driving a high gain tetrode amp, and the amp's screen current is jumping all over the place. The power transient is only at the time of transition. The steady-state power of the mark and space are equal. I've complained about this before, but it seems to be even worse now. I'm using FW rev 3.30. This amplitude modulation has got to be producing some illegal sidebands.
