Re: [Elecraft] [K3] New K3 feature -- need testers: Main/Sub Audio Mixing Control (MIX menu entry)

2009-10-27 Thread Richard Squire

Nice new feature! Makes the K3 an even more versatile and user-friendly DX
machine!
Installation went smoothly, except previous assignment of macros SPLIT/SUB
on/off to PF1/PF2 was erased in the process and function switches changed to
the MIX commands...
Assigned the SPLIT macros again and now all is OK. Both SPLIT and MIX.
Thanks Elecrafters!
Richard - HB9ANM

Normally, main RX audio is heard in the left channel, and sub in the
right. Now, using the CONFIG:MIX menu entry, you can put main RX audio
in both channels while leaving sub audio in only one (or vice-versa;
or even put both receivers in both channels).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 PB Ctrl Shift .01/.05

2009-10-27 Thread drewko
I guess that's my problem... Wide CW to me is greater than 1 KHz BW,
which I often use. A weak signal in these wide passbands can be
improved alot by shifting the passband. But a 0.01 step, assuming it
even covered the entire range, would be pretty tedious for such wide
BW. So, yeah... I use both .01 and .05. It's just a little
inconvenient when changing from one to the other and the WIDTH gets
reset to 400 Hz every time.

.05 feels, sounds klunky on CW and does not allow me to play games with the
skirts when a strong station is up or down and bothering me. I use the
400 and 250 8 pole roofing filters set to come in at 450 and 350
respectively (mine measure 410 and 330 which suits me fine). My filter
above 450 is 1800. What do you mean by wide CW?

 every time...

The passband has to be normalized after changing this setting in order
to clean up internal variables associated with SHIFT and WIDTH.

Always try to post in Plain Text and do not include attachments. Most
Mailman lists are set up to automatically trash rich text (i.e. HTML, etc)
or posts with attachments (although some will simply strip attachments and
HTML).

not see it for a couple of hours because it hasn't been copied onto the

[Elecraft] Fw: SRX1115380891ID - Compatibility with software written for earlier versions of Windows

2009-10-27 Thread Jim
This is being sent to several groups and individuals. Do not think it is
SPAM, it is simply the result of an inquiry about the latest Operating
System released by Microsoft, Windows 7, and how that OS interacts with some
software in use in the amateur radio community. The fourth paragraph gives
the best answer. If you currently have and use Windows Xp and have no
problem with any amateur radio related software, the options available are
to keep using Windows Xp on the same computer or upgrading to one of the
higher priced Windows 7 packages.

For the present, I will keep the OS that is now on my computer.

73 to all,
Jim Good KD5VXH

Hello James,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Customer Service.

I appreciate you for the time taken to write back to us.

Most programs written for earlier versions of Windows also work in Windows
7. If an older program does not run correctly or does not install on Windows
7, start the Program Compatibility troubleshooter, which simulates an
earlier version of Windows. You can run the wizard on the setup program
itself if the program does not install, or you can run the wizard on the
program if it installs but does not run correctly. For more information,
please visit the below web link:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows

You have one more option, which is Windows XP Mode. This feature is
included in certain editions of Windows 7 (Windows 7 Professional,
Enterprise, or Ultimate) and using Windows XP Mode, you can run programs
that were designed for Windows XP. To know more information about Windows
XP, please visit the below web link:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7

If you have any queries regarding compatibility, you may contact our
Presales team. You can reach them at: (800) 426-9400. They are available
from Monday through Friday 6:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. Pacific Time.

James, I hope the provided information is helpful.

Thank you,

Sujith,

Specific programs that are of interest to the amateur radio community, and
to me, include WSPR (pronounced WHISPER) which stands for Weak Signal
Propagation Reporter, MicroLog, DigiPan, and a few other similar programs.
These programs were written to work with the Windows Xp Operating System.
In some cases, a simple patch was made to update a program from Windows 98,
or earlier, to Windows Xp compatibility. A few software developers have, on
amateur radio reflectors, expressed frustration about being able to update
their software to work correctly with the latest versions of Windows. These
programs are used by amateur radio operators to record (or log) contacts the
operator makes, get information about expected propagation to distant
countries, and in some cases control the radio being used. Some software
developers are writing code to do most of these tasks under open source
protocol and open source operating systems. Should there be delays and
problems getting some of the more useful software to work with Windows 7, as
has been the case with Windows Vista, then many of the amateur radio
operators I hear from would easily switch to some other format for computer
software.

Thank you,
James Good

2009-10-27 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Wayne,

Normally, main RX audio is heard in the left channel, and sub in
the right. Now, using the CONFIG:MIX menu entry, you can put main
RX audio in both channels while leaving sub audio in only one (or
vice-versa; or even put both receivers in both channels).

Now that the Mix capability is in place, how about the unified
Mix and Receive VFO control (e.g., like Yaesu) to make life
easier for logging software to support the SO2V operating
style?

To begin with, start each one separately, then size it and drag it
where you want it to be, or you can right click on the quick launch

arranging the open windows. Those options are: (1) Cascade Windows,
which arranges the windows from the upper left corner of the screen
overlapped downward and to the right. (2) Tile Windows Horizontally,
which does exactly what it says. (3) Tile Windows Vertically, which
also does exactly what it says.

I don't know anything about the applications you are using, but having
them start up in the same size and location next time you load them
depends on whether the programmer of an application coded the

when you close it and restarts it based on what was saved. This is a
feature often overlooked by application developers.

Very true. But just exiting split your modes will already be the same from
your
previous macro execution. The only thing potentially lacking would be the
equalization of the VFOs. But that does not really matter unless you are going
to
go into split again. And if you are, you will probably use your macro again
which
will set it all up for you anyway.

To me it seems just exiting split would be easier and save a button for another
macro.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] K3 PB Ctrl Shift .01/.05

2009-10-27 Thread Jim Miller KG0KP
The bandwidth appears to be limited when using 10 hz and it is painfully
slow when the bandwidth is fairly wide.

When I am in PSK or RTTY and using search and pounce, I use wide bandwidth
in HRD and DM780 to find the signal I want on the screen and then narrow it
in so it is better for me to have 50 when wide and then 10 when much
narrower so I wind up switching all the time.

What would be really nice, if possible, is to auto change to 10 hz shift
when you adjust your width below (pick a number) 200 or so and back when
you go above that width (optionally?).

(A single button would work too, guess I will have to figure out how to do
that.)

The KRX3's AUX input is protected by a gas-discharge tube, bleeder

damaged. However, activation of the COR (which you would hear as you
key the rig, etc.) can be disruptive to T-R sequencing. If you hear the
COR relay go on, I'd strongly suggest that you either reduce the
coupling between the two antennas or provide external switching or
shorting (this could be done via the KEY OUT jack on the K3).

[Elecraft] K3 Instant-split macro

2009-10-27 Thread Gary Hinson
Hi all.

I'm having fun configuring my instant-split function, and an undo, to
my personal liking, feeding off ideas from others on this reflector
and trying them out via the K3 Utility. It works well but the really
cool part is that we can each have our own settings without pestering
the Elecrafty wizzards to death, or voting, or waging flame wars
here to define the perfect split function by committee. Fabulous!

Would it be possible for us to replace the standard SPLIT function
(accessible by a long hold on AB) with our own custom split function,
please? The command to enter split mode within the macro would of
course still need to call the default split function not re-start the
macro (!), but this way we would not need to remember which macro key
we had reassigned for split as it is conveniently already labelled.

Would it be possible for us to replace the standard SPLIT function

[Elecraft] KX-1: Broadcast breakthrough on 20m

2009-10-27 Thread Stephen Prior
I have just returned from a few days away in Italy with my xyl. Being
limited with what we could take (we were flying, usually we drive), I took
along my KX-1. It was the first time that I had used it this year- blame
the K3 for that!

When I used it last (in CT and EA in summer 2008) I posted to the reflector
that I had suffered Broadcast interference on 20m after the radio had
suffered a rather severe blow caused by my son tripping up over the antenna
wire and launching the KX-1 some distance! As a result of this mishap I
discovered that I had a broken bnc socket which I have since replaced. I
imagined that this might have been at the root of the problem and that all
would be well.

However, on the aforementioned trip I threw about 10m of wire out of the
hotel window (just to listen) and was surprised to find three or four strong
broadcast stations around 14.2MHz, so strong in fact that they were badly
interfering with QSOs. I cannot help but think that there is something else
awry with the KX-1. I have checked the filter alignment and all seems okay
according to the manual. Is there anything else I should check for? I
don't expect the kind of performance I get from the K2 or K3, but it seems
to me that the KX-1 should be performing better than this. It also seems a
little quiet.

Any suggestions appreciated

Hi Dick

Maybe they are, but I don't hear anything on the K3 (or even my FT-817) on a
much bigger antenna, and anyway there is not much BC activity I can hear on
7.1MHz these days. I should add that the KX-1 has the 30/40 board and the
internal ATU fitted.

Re: [Elecraft] KX-1: Broadcast breakthrough on 20m

2009-10-27 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Stephen,

The KX1, like most low-current QRP transceivers, uses an active mixer
in the front end. IMD products can appear in the mixer's output
spectra when large signals are present at the input, especially if the
LO (local oscillator) injection is insufficient.

Try backing down the RF GAIN control on the KX1. If the breakthrough
signals you're referring to decrease in amplitude faster than the
desired signals, chances are you're hearing IMD. If all signals
decrease in amplitude at about the same rate, you could have a problem
with LO injection, or the 20-m band-pass filter may need realignment.
The KX1's DDS LO has some level of harmonic content, and if the input
filtering is not sufficient, LO harmonics might mix with very strong
signals to produce outputs that show up in the ham band.

If you have an oscilloscope I can give you a few test points to look
at. But you could also try peaking the band pass filter per the KX1
owner's manual.

[Elecraft] K3 Switch Macro Undo

2009-10-27 Thread Tony Fegan VE3QF
Just a little brainstorming.

There seems to be quite an interest in undoing the changes made by a
macro. This might be possible with the addition of a pause command.
The first part of the macro would set your changes. Follow this with a
pause command and then the macro undo commands. The pause command
would stop the macro (after execution of the set commands) and it would
not be restarted until the same button is pressed again (performing the
undo commands). Maybe, any other button press should end the macro
without execution before performing its own function.
I have no idea how difficult this would be to achieve. Would a paused
macro cause problems with other ongoing program operations? I just
thought it might be one way of taking care of undo or the oops
problem. It might also save a switch for some other use.

There are probably other ways of achieving the same result.

Re: [Elecraft] KX-1: Broadcast breakthrough on 20m

2009-10-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
Stephen,

The first thing I would suggest is to see if the KX1 is really receiving
on 20 meters, or perhaps on some other frequency band. What I am
thinking is that the firmware chip may not be fully seated in the
socket, which will cause to DDS output to be on some unknown frequency.

Another thing that could cause similar problem is a distorted DDS output
waveshape - check inductors L4 and L5 for damage and capacitors C50, C51
and C52.

The other possibility is that the KX1 was actually responding to the
image. When tuned to USB at 14.2, the DDS output is 4.9 kHz below the
received frequency, and there could be leak-through of strong signals
near 4.4 MHz.

Some of you may be doing this already using a direct DSP command from
K3 Utility. The menu entry is more convenient, and it's sticky --
i.e., it is set up automatically whenever you turn on the sub receiver.

Mixing main/sub audio on one side or the other is useful if you're
focusing more on the signal from one receiver. Another benefit is that
AFX (audio effects) can be used even while the sub receiver is turned
on. This is because AFX, if turned on, will apply to receiver audio
routed to both left and right audio channels.

We could use additional testers for this feature. If you're
interested, please email me directly (n6kr at elecraft dot com).

[Elecraft] K3 Menu Stuck

2009-10-27 Thread Jim Harris

Matt,

Here are the firmware rev's: MCU 3.41, FPF 1.04, DSP 2.37. Several additional
pieces of information I have found. In addition to the menu situation as
mentioned, when changing modes the mode will not change from CW. Remember you
need to go through CW to get from DATA to USB/LSB or vice versa. The problem
only occurs when MMTTY is open and the radio is set to FSK D. The situations
do NOT occur with Radio Command port set to None (no radio command) nor in
other data modes. I have tried MMVARI and Hamscope and it doesn't happen with
them but they don't do FSK RTTY. I have a straight through cable from COM 1 on
my PC to the RS-232 on the K3 for radio command. For FSK RTTY I have a home
brew cable with level converters from COM 4 on the PC to the ACC port on the
radio. FSK=TXD DB9-3 (PC) to DB15-1, PTT=DB9-7(PC) to DB15-4. Ground =DB9-1
to DB15-5/12. There are two level converters. One each for FSK and PTT and
they are in the back shell of the DB9 connector. Each lev
el converter is a 1k ohm resister from the respective DB9 pin to the base of a
2N3904 transistor. The collectors go to their respective pin on the DB15.
Both emitters are tied to the ground pins on each connector.

FSK RTTY works fine with MMTTY using FSK D on the radio. It's just that the
radio gets hung up in the two area mentioned above when radio command is on.
I'll try to do some experimenting with radio command to see if there is
something that can be changed that will eliminate the situations.

Hope the additional information is helpful to anyone trying to duplicate the
situation.

Have a good day and 73.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Menu Stuck

2009-10-27 Thread Richard Ferch
Jim,

This is a bit of a stab in the dark, and may or may not have anything to
do with what is happening to you, but exactly how many methods are you
using to do PTT? It sounds as if you may have two or perhaps even three
methods enabled simultaneously, which is not a good idea and might be
contributing to the problem by confusing the firmware somehow if the
hardware and software commands are getting crossed due to slight timing
differences.

1) MMTTY is controlling PTT on DTR/RTS on COM4, which you have connected
to the PTT pin on the ACC connector via a keying circuit.

2) You are using MMTTY's Radio command, which means MMTTY will be
sending TX; and RX; commands over COM1 unless you have deliberately
blanked out the RX and TX boxes in the Commands pane of the MMTTY Radio
command dialog box.

3) If you happen to have the PTT box checked for DTR/RTS in the MMTTY
Radio command dialog (top right), MMTTY is also controlling DTR/RTS on
COM1, and if you have the K3's CONFIG:PTT-KEY set to anything other than
OFF-xxx, this would also be commanding the K3's PTT on and off.

Since you have method 1 implemented via the ACC connector, you don't
really need MMTTY's Radio command at all, at least not for purposes of
PTT. If you are using Radio command in order to get radio frequency
information into MMTTY for logging purposes, you might consider:

(a) unchecking the PTT box for DTR/RTS in the MMTTY Radio command dialog
box; and if this doesn't work or it is already unchecked
(b) clearing out the contents of the Rx and Tx commands in the MMTTY
Radio command dialog box in order to stop MMTTY from trying to control
PTT via software.

Hope this helps.

1. It is not the bandwidth that is limited, it is the range of the SHIFT
control. For example, in DATA A, the bandwidth can be adjusted all the
way up to 4 kHz, no differently from PB CTRL = 50 Hz. What is different
is that the range of adjustment of the SHIFT control is limited to the
range 1280 - 1720 Hz. As you noted, if the range were wider it would be
painfully slow to adjust it more broadly anyway.

The best solution to this is what some software calls an ALIGN or OPT
function. This works as follows: with a wide filter, find the signal you
want by clicking on it in the waterfall; click on the ALIGN or OPT
button which retunes your radio so that the signal you have selected is
now on the optimal frequency (FC = 1500 Hz is the obvious choice in DATA
A); and now adjust the filter bandwidth as narrow as you like. I do not
know whether DM780 has such a function, but if it does, that would be
much easier than using the SHIFT knob to chase stations up and down the
waterfall.

2. If an automatic switch between 10 Hz and 50 Hz shift resolution with
filter bandwidth is ever implemented, I would suggest that it kick in
somewhere around 400-500 Hz, certainly not as narrow as 200 Hz. In RTTY,
the widths where the 10 Hz shift resolution is most useful are those
where the skirts of the filter and the skirts of the RTTY signal
overlap. At a shift resolution of 50 Hz and with some choices of PITCH,
this overlap could happen at filter bandwidths up to 350-400 Hz.
