Re: [Elecraft] [K3] My Proposed K3 Configuration so far...(usb adaptors)

2009-11-19 Thread GW0ETF

From personal experience some 'cheap' usb-serial adaptors can produce
significant levels of rf hash. I don't need 'em at the moment but if I did
I'd probably go with the Elecraft one on the assumption it's been checked
for noise.

No point spending mega bucks on a top rate receiver and then degrading it
with a cheap little adaptor.

PS Can Wayne or Eric confirm that their usb adaptor *is* rf-quiet??

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.59: Misc. improvements

2009-11-19 Thread dalej
Loaded 3.59 just now. Radio NZ on 9765, locks on with the K3 at
9764.984, it's dithering a couple of hz. 5-4-5-4-3 etc.

After this load I thought I had a problem. It ended the download and
returned the K3 to (what I thought) would be normal operation with a
loud pop and crackle in the speaker. The S-meter was pegged out. I
shut down the K3 for a few seconds and turned it back on with the same
results. So I turned off the K3 and the power supply for a little
longer then turned it back on, meter still pegged out, after several
seconds or perhaps a minute the meter slowly came back down and I was
receiving Radio NZ. Now everything seems to be ok. I have not tried
transmitting yet.

FWIW... In rev-3.57 my K3 was typically locking 5-6 Hz above the zero
beat carrier. That seems to have been cut in half with this revision,
now locking 2-3 Hz above carrier.

All India Radio carrier at 9869.986 KHz locks in AM Sync at .988-.989.
(All India Radio transmitters seem to be consistently about 15 Hz
low.)

When I was a kid I dreamed of having a SW receiver that was accurate
to within 5 KHz, heheh

Didn't have any problems with loading the F/W.

Some SWBC stations can be pretty far off freq. All India Radio is
consistently about 10 or 12 Hz low.

[Elecraft] [K2] K2 VCO Voltage Instability

2009-11-19 Thread John Huffman
Guys -

This topic was KPA100 Behaving Badly, but at Tom's N0SS suggestion, I
tried the KPA100 on my working K2 and all was well. I also tried the
control board of the sick K2 in my working K2 and all was well. So,
it's not the KPA100 Behaving Badly, it's the K2.

I'm back to the original problem - watery CW signals on receive,
frequency shifts on receive and loss of all signals.

I suspect the VCO is not getting the correct consistent voltage. I
attempted to do the VCO Alignment in Alignment and Test - Part 2. I
tuned to 4mhz and easily adjusted L30 for 6.0v as shown on R30 on the RF
board.

But, as I tuned toward 3.5mhz, the voltage decreased steadily until
about 3.8mhz where it dropped to zero. Tuning back up to 4mhz, it
remained at 0. Turning the radio on and off while tuned to 4mhz
restored the voltage to 6v, but the same thing happened when I tried to
tune below 3.8mhz.

Turning the radio on while it is set for 3.5mhz give a reading at R30 of
6.8v. Tuning higher increases the reading to 8v where it stays at all
higher frequencies. Tuning back down, the voltage goes to 0v around
3.8mhz and remains there at all frequencies.

The voltages on these pins of U6 (RF Board) remain constant - pin 5 -
4v, pin 6 - 4v, pin 8 - 8v. Would a bad U6 explain these problems?

It there somewhere else I should be checking?

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K2 VCO Voltage Instability

2009-11-19 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

That R30 voltage is changing too rapidly on 80 meters

I doubt U6 is the problem, but more data is required to say yes or no.
The voltage at pin 5 should be a steady 4 volts coming from the
thermistor board. As long as this is steady, there is no problem with it.
The voltage at pin 6 will vary depending on the voltage coming out of U4
pin 13. That variation will result in a corresponding (but larger)
variation at pin 7 (which is also the left end of R30). Since you do
get some variation at R30, I would say U6 is likely working properly.

Your problem is the VCO locking - this is a PLL loop involving the VFO
area and its feedback loop to U4 - the output of U4 then drives U6 which
in turn drives the voltage to the varactors in the VFO to alter the
frequency. At the same time, there is data (from the EEPROM) being sent
to the PLL chip (U4) to tell it what divisor to use in syncing with the
incoming PLL Reference frequency - so any of these things could cause
incorrect operation.

First things first - set to 4.000 MHz and check to see that you do have
voltage at R30 - Adjust L30 until it is near 6 volts. Then use the
internal counter probe and CAL FCTR to measure the frequency at TP1 (the
VFO frequency) The frequency at TP1 should be close to 8.915 MHz.

Move the frequency down while monitoring the voltage at R30 - when the
voltage gets to 1.5 volts, note the displayed frequency and again
measure the frequency at TP1 - subtract 4.915 from the measured
frequency and compare that to the K2 displayed frequency - there should
be a close match (forget anything less than 1 kHz, it is not significant
at this time).

If there is a match, the PLL and VCO are likely working properly. Next
step is to assume that there is bad data in the EEPROM - try doing a CAL
PLL to see if that sets things better. If not, then write down the menu
items including the filter settings and do a Master Reset (hold the 4,
5, and 6 buttons while turning on power) - then after the Info 201 goes
away repeat the CAL PLL.

If anything in the steps above seem totally out of whack, stop and let
me know what you are finding (it may be that we are looking in the wrong
places).

Don W3FPR

Second attempt went with no problems. I think the cause was I was doing some

I guess if something else takes a bit too much CPU a buffer underrun may

In 3.59 -- Sync AM listening to music on HF BC, the sync search usually
kicks in and resettles at the bottom of a carrier fadeout, which will almost
always involve a near 180 degree phase shift at the bottom. The transition
is MUCH better than 3.58 for listening to music, the one or two cycle woop
neatly blending into the other spectral changes at the bottom of the fade,
MINUS the no-carrier distortion.

I found myself enjoying a story reading on 7440 (?, didn't write it down)

stuff on low side, and the considerable fades were handled.

Standard advice if any firmware load issues, on PC shut down all programs
except the utility, do nothing else when loading firmware. Do NOT try to
load firmware with the download as a virtual directory. If the utility
starts up funny, takes too long, or comes up on 9k serial speed, kill it and
restart it.

When the utility comes up quick and clean, start the firmware, get up and
take a break. Leave PC alone, don't touch, no browsing, no mouse moves.

When it's done, kill the utility, power off the K3 for at least 15 seconds.

[Elecraft] OT: FS Pristine, low mileage Tek 2465b 400 Mhz 4 ch scope

2009-11-19 Thread Howard Ashcraft
I have a late model (B054347) Tektronix 2465b 400 Mhz scope. It has had
very little use, with total hours of 4632 and on/off cycles of 511. This is
very low for a 2465b. I have seen units with over 20,000 hours. It is in
excellent condition cosmetically, the rubber feet on the back of the case
look like they just came out of the injection molder. Everything works
perfectly and the display is crisp and strong. Even at the fastest sweeps,
it produces a nice, strong trace. It was last calibrated in March 20, 2007
and compares accurately with my DSA602a. It comes with the probe pouch on
top, a hard copy users manual in good condition, and a crt shade. I have
posted photographs at

a 5MHz 1 v pp square wave, usage, and the screen that shows that all
internal self-tests pass.

The 2465b is considered by many to be the best desktop/portable analog scope
ever made. Late model 2465b s have one issue. Tektronix moved to using
surface mounted components on the A5 board near the end of 2465b production
(basically a very good idea), but the early smd electrolytic capacitors had
a tendency to leak. The electrolyte could damage traces and the pc board,
itself. I checked the A5 board on this unit and found that one of the caps
was starting to leak (but before any damage to the traces and the pc board)
and I have cleaned the board and replaced the electrolytic caps with new
panasonic fk series units. So, you don't have to do this or worry about it.

If you are looking for a 2465b, this is about as nice a unit as you will
find.

Price is $795 plus shipping in the contintental us of $40 (pick up in
Alameda, CA is ok, too).

I also have 2 p6137 probes with ground clips. These are also very lightly
used and if you purchase the scope, can be purchased for an additonal
$65/each. They are not for sale without the oscilloscope.

[Elecraft] W2

2009-11-19 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

Assembling the W2 took less than an hour (coffee break included). Everything
fits together nicely (as usual with Elecraft). And loading Rev 0.90 today
went smoothly.

The accuracy is quite satisfactory as checked against my Bird 43 (which,
admittedly, has not been calibrated for some time but I'm quite happy with
+/-5% which nobody will notice on his S-meter anyway!).
It appears that the PK HOLD function, though very convenient and reliable in
manual mode, behaves erratically in AUTO mode, always going back to 1 or
2...

Further, the SWR meter will never show 1.0, the 1.1 LED stays on, whatever I
do and even though the K3's meter shows 1:1.0 – even on a dummy load (no,
I'm not an SWR addict! But I just wonder why…)
I guess these minor issues will be dealt with in some future release...

Thanks, Elecraft, for another very nice product!

[Elecraft] K3 DVR message play termination via the RX remote-control command

2009-11-19 Thread Wayne Burdick
Those of you who control the K3's digital voice recorder (KDVR3) from
a PC application can now terminate message play/repeat more easily.
The K3's RX remote-control command will now cleanly cancel transmit

[Elecraft] Updated W2 Serial Interface Commands Rev B

2009-11-19 Thread Brian Broggie
We have just updated the W2 Serial Interface Commands document
to Rev B. Check out...

http://www.elecraft.com/software/elecraft_software_page.htm

In the W2 Software section you will find a document of the Serial
Commands presently available. It is also available in our Manuals
and Downloads section, as well. The W2 Serial Interface Commands is a
71k pdf document you may download for free! Used in conjunction with
our Elecraft W2 Utility (also available as a download on this
webpage), you can calibrate your Sensors to match another watt meter
(like the K3's internal one), set the Range to Auto or a fixed level,
set LED decay rates, and much more.

This document is updated as the firmware develops, so keep checking in
for the latest updates!

[Elecraft] OT: FS: BB105 Voltage Variable Capacitance Diodes

2009-11-19 Thread Jim Sheldon
I've acquired around 1200 of these and thought I'd offer them up for the
experimenters to work with.

BB105 voltage variable capacitance diodes - max reverse voltage 30 volts and
linear capacitance range is from 1 to 10 volts. 1V = approx 15.5 PF and 10V =
approx 4.5 PF. These have bendable tabs that can be either thru-hole or
surface mounted. They were designed to be precision tuning diodes for VHF and
UHF TV Tuners, hence the linear range. I'll include a printed data sheet with
each order for 10 or more.

10 for $2, 30 for $5, shipping included.

Contact me off list please for ordering and payment info.

On the bottom of the RF Board, check the small RF Choke RFC15 for
continuity - check with the ohmmeter, voltage checks at both ends will
be 5 volts even if it is open. If it is open, you can use a temporary
jumper across it, but get the proper choke and install it when available.

No. The DSP will use the last set of readings only.

I use 20 meters, but it isn't critical. I probably woudln't use 6
meters, since the attenuator and/or preamp transfer characteristic
probably is slightly different there.

[Elecraft] Macro to turn an external amplifier on and off

2009-11-19 Thread Vic K2VCO
I wanted to create a K3 macro to turn an external amplifier on and off. It
turns out that
with firmware 3.60, which is now in field test and will shortly be in beta,
it's possible.
The technique probably has other applications, like controlling filters or
preamps, etc.

A new MP command allows you to set the DIGOUT1 control line (pin 11 of the K3
accessory
connector) to go to ground. This line is per-band and per antenna. This line
can sink only
15 ma, so I used a simple PNP transistor switch to operate a relay which
enables my amplifier.

My AMP IN macro sets the power to 65 watts and activates (grounds) DIGOUT1 when
its
associated button is pushed. There's a companion AMP OUT macro which increases
power to
100 watts and ungrounds DIGOUT1.

Since DIGOUT1 is per-band, it's necessary to set CONFIG:PWR SET to PER BAND
also. Then you
can set the amplifier to be on for 20 meters, say, but off for 40. Changing
bands will
automatically turn the amp on or off and set the proper power level.

Here are the macros:

AMP IN:  MN019;MP001;MN255;PC065;
AMP OUT: MN019;MP000;MN255;PC110;

The MN019 command selects the DIGOUT1 menu option, the MP command turns the
line on or off
on the band that you are on, and the PC command sets the power level. My
SB-1000 likes
about 65 watts, so that's what I select when the amp is on.

Wayne has made the MP command work for DIGOUT1 in 3.60, so you'll need at least
that version.

I had the same loud pop and crackle with s-meter pegging out when I
turned on power to the K3 today. It was previously set on Radio NZ
freq and AM sync was enabled when I turned it off this morning before
leaving on a road trip. I re-loaded 3.59 late this afternoon and now
all seems to be ok. I tried turning off the K3, leaving it on AM with
sync enabled and it did not pop and crack plus the S-meter did not peg
out. I must have had a faulty upload the first time. I have to admit
while uploading the firmware I was doing other things on the computer
so maybe it was due to my fiddling. I'll check it out again early in
the morning, but everything seems to be ok now. In fact it appears
the sync is locking faster and more steady now. Keeping fingers

After this load I thought I had a problem. It ended the download and
returned the K3 to (what I thought) would be normal operation with a
loud pop and crackle in the speaker. The S-meter was pegged out. I
shut down the K3 for a few seconds and turned it back on with the same

My take on this would be that although the PC copy of the file is
fine, that Winders is glitching the send from the PC to the K3 by not
paying rapt attention to the one and only timing dependent app running
at the time, and somehow dropping stuff. The procedure previously
outlined has kept firmware loads pristine.

I found myself enjoying a story reading on 7440 (?, didn't write it down)
where using the shift to listen on the upper side got rid of some grindy
stuff on low side, and the considerable fades were handled.

 -Nice-     :)

 On the firmware loads...

THEN power on and see how it's working.

Various occasional wierdness has ceased since rigidly sticking to this
policy.  Windows has always been hostile to timing sensitive hardware
 drivers and utilities.

Keeping fingers
crossed.

After this load I thought I had a problem. It ended the download and
returned the K3 to (what I thought) would be normal operation with a

[Elecraft] BL-2 Balun Heating

2009-11-19 Thread Gary Winkelman
I recently built a BL-2 Balun. It is connected between my Palstar AT1KM
tuner and my doublet antenna. The antenna consists of a 100' wire up
25' and fed by 95' of 600 ohm open wire feeder. I'm using the 1:1
setting on the balun. There is a 4 section of RG-213 between the balun
and a coax input of the tuner. I'm driving it with 125 watts from a
TS-850. After no more than a few minutes of CW or RTTY transmission,
the balun is too hot to touch, the SWR rises and the power goes down.
The balun is obviously saturated.

Does anyone have an idea how I can reduce the overheating? I've tried
adding a heat sink but it doesn't make any difference.

Tnx for reading!

Re: [Elecraft] BL-2 Balun Heating

2009-11-19 Thread Don Wilhelm
Gary,

Balun heating is normally caused by attempting to feed a very high or
very low impedance.
Have you tried the 4:1 position? It may help, so do try it even though
I would believe the antenna system feedpoint impedance where the balun
is connected may be in the range of thousands of ohms rather than being
in the 'hundreds of ohms' range that a balun can normally handle.
Another thing to look for is a shorted or open feedline or feedline to
antenna connection.

You may want to try adding or subtracting some length to your antenna or
to your feedline.

If you had mentioned the band(s) where this situation occurs, we might
have been able to offer more insight than my generic response provides.

Re: [Elecraft] BL-2 Balun Heating

2009-11-19 Thread Paul Christensen
Gary,

What frequency of operation causes the balun overheating? Assuming the
balun was constructed correctly, I would begin looking at trying to optimize
line length if you favor that band of operation.

For example, when using a 100 ft. dipole at 3.8 MHz and 1/4-wave in height
above ground, the optimal feedline length of 450 ohm transmission line
occurs at roughly 27, 143, or 260 feet from the antenna feed point. The
50-ohm RG-213 or 1:1 balun would couple at one of these distances. At these
lengths, the 50-ohm line VSWR on your RG-213 would approach 1:1 while using
any 50-ohm line length although the balanced open line VSWR is always
determined by the line to antenna mismatch and not considering line loss,
VSWR on that section of the line is constant irrespective of line length.

When coupling the 50-ohm line (or balun) to the balanced line at a
line-current maximum point, a tuner is generally no longer necessary. Worst
case is that the tuner is used as a touch-up device to ensure full band
coverage but at least the balun is no longer seeing wildly outrageous Z
values since the change in line length functions as a variable RF
transformer to achieve Z values reasonably close to 50-ohms at the balun.

Hi Gary,

You could place the balun (in the 1:1 configuration) on the other side of
the tuner ... that is between the xcvr and the tuner. One side of the
balun output would connect to the center pin of the input coax connector
and the other side of the balun output connects to the tuner ground
(frame). The tuner frame would of course be isolated from any ground
especially the radio. The output of the tuner (no balun on the output)
would connect directly to the 600 ohm feed line one side of the line
connects to the center of the coax output center pin and the other side of
the line connects to the tuner ground.

The arrangement will work perfectly as a balanced tuning arrangement for
the feed line and at the same time place the balun where it should be
in the low impedance 1:1 circuit point ... with the result it will operate
with efficiency and be cool as cucumber. At the moment it is not a 'balun'
problem ... but a circuit problem.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft_K3] K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.59: Misc. improvements

Keeping fingers
 crossed.

Re: [Elecraft] BL-2 Balun Heating

2009-11-19 Thread Jim Dunstan

PS

I believe the BL-2 is rated at 150 watts so running at 125W is already
at the limit even when it is placed in the ideal point in the circuit
... (50 ohms resistive). Place it in a point in the circuit where the
resistance varies up or down from the ideal of 50 ohms and then make it
complex with added reactance and the unit could make like a toaster
element. Of course if you operate QRP you will be just fine as long as you
tolerate the RF power loss in the balun. Just imagine trying to make the
circuit work at 1KW. Nothing like power to illustrate weakness.

Re: [Elecraft] BL-2 Balun Heating

2009-11-19 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Yes, you are reaching the curie temperature of the core. At that point
it's magnetic properties change dramatically.

Of course that heat comes from RF that is becoming heat instead of being
radiated by the antenna. A bigger core isn't the answer. You'd still be
losing the same amount of power even if a much larger core felt cooler. Same
with a heat sink.

You didn't say what band you are using. Heating a balun is usually a sign of
excessive current flowing -that is you are at a current loop. You can change
that by changing the length of the feedline or just do away with the balun
and connect one side of the open wire feeders to the center pin of the tuner
output and the other to the case. That does not introduce anything like the
degree of unbalance that some suggest. Indeed, the balance in the feedline
is much more strongly affected by the antenna than the source.

2009-11-19 Thread Steve Ellington
I have the AT1KM. It has a nice big 4:1 balun built in. Have you tried it to
see if it gets hot too? That little BL2 may be rated for 250 watts but this
is for a resistive load or 200 ohms. It's not going to be able to handle the
extreme reactance of that antenna system. Even 25 watts would be asking a
lot of it.
I quote the BL2 manual:
Power Rating 250 watts with a MATCHED LOAD. Your load is far from matched.

[Elecraft] K3 Audio Problem in Local Computer

2009-11-19 Thread John K9UWA
I have my K3 hooked to a computer and all functions on it work fine through Ham
Radio Deluxe and DM780 with an attached
K1EL Keyer.

I am then attempting to access this K3 and its computer over my in home network
from another computer. This one they call the
Local Computer. I have the Computer control of the radio plus the keying with
the WnKey keyer. including the waterfall visual
of the radio signal from within the DM780 program ... but NO Audio is heard
from the speakers of this local computer. The
soundcard works you can listen to any CD or off the web videos etc... but I
can't get the audio from the K3 so I am missing
something someplace?

Can anyone tell me what I need to set up?

[Elecraft] K3 DVR/PTT behavior improved -- looking for pre-contest volunteers to try it

2009-11-19 Thread Wayne Burdick
We've greatly improved the way PTT works with the K3's digital voice
recorder. The latest field-test release, MCU rev. 3.62, behaves as
described below.

If you'd like to test this for us (quickly, so we can do another beta
release tomorrow), please email me directly.

tnx
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

MCU 3.62, 11-19-2009

* PTT USE WITH DVR: If the KDVR3 menu entry ‘1’ tap option
is set to AUTOPTT (the default), then PTT now behaves as follows:

   - If you start DVR message play first (by tapping M1-M4), then
assert PTT during the message, DVR play will be cancelled.

   - If you assert PTT first, then play a DVR message, it will
play normally, and will complete even if you let go of PTT.

You can also cancel DVR message play by tapping REC, as usual,
whether PTT is asserted or not. (Or cancel from a computer
using the “RX;” command – see below.)

Note: If the KDVR3 menu entry ‘1’ tap option is set to
USE PTT, then PTT is required as a qualifier for DVR
message play. In this case, releasing PTT in the middle
of a DVR message will cancel it.

Remote Control Command Changes:

* DVR MSG PLAY CANCEL: You can now use the “RX”
command to cleanly cancel DVR message play (as well
as any other transmit or message-play function, in any mode).

* CONFIG:DIGOUT1 MENU PARAMETER is now accessible
with the “MP command. Values 000 and 001 only; get/set.
