[Elecraft] N3FJP setup

2009-11-27 Thread W0SZ
Thanks, gang, for the help. My good friend, W0NTA, set me straight. For
some reason I thought I could key the rig using audio like with PSK31, duh.
Anyway, Dick, had an extra DSB9 interface cable that he was willing to lend
me. Now I need another USB Serial Cable. My computer doesn't have a serial
port, boo! Anyway, it's a great group. One can always get help, fast, on
the Elecraft reflector. Best 73, Steve

[Elecraft] K3 Tx light on

2009-11-27 Thread Gene
Thanks all for the quick response. Chuck, AE4CW and Bob, K6GGO were
right on. Selecting PTT -> ON, in DM780-> Program options cleared up
the problem.

I do not remember having to select this option way back when I first
started using PSK31 with HRD/DM780 and my K3. I downloaded the latest
version of HRD and 3.63 on the same day. Something may have changed in
HRD and most likely does not have anything to do with the new Elecraft
firmware.

Thanks again.

Jonathan,

Good de-bugging. Capacitor failures are not that common and difficult
to find - great troubleshooting job there.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Monitor feedback

2009-11-27 Thread Mike
Thanks, Oliver, but it's not RF, it's audio. I was testing in 'test'
mode. The solution was supplied by Iain a couple of posts up.
I do have some toroids on order for another problem though.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Monitor feedback

2009-11-27 Thread O. Johns
Dear Mike,

Maybe you have solved this by now. But, if not, my experience might be
helpful. I also noted a sort of rough feedback when listening to the monitor.
In my case it was RF feedback. Maybe you have had a rough SSB signal for some
time and the monitor just revealed it to you?

Anyhow, as Don Wilhelm says, the best thing is to look at your antenna feed
situation to try to minimize feedback. In my case, this was effective except
on 20 meters. Due to physical constraints that I can't change, my dipole
antenna passes about 15 feet above the table with my K3 on it. As it happens,
on that one band, there is lots of RF around. Maybe one of the power lines is
resonant, don't know. Anyhow, I tried lots of ferrite beads on various lines,
which reduced but didn't eliminate the problem. Finally, and this is my
suggestion to you, I put a ferrite bead right at the end of the mike boom, just
before the mike itself. This killed the RF feedback for me. (This is using
the Yamaha CM500 headset that was written about earlier on the reflector.)
Evidently the mike element itself is sensitive to RF.

Hope you've solved your problem by now.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Leftside panel

2009-11-27 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Yep. A new errata was released last week covering that change, but I see
it's not on the web site yet either.

Those holes are for mounting the new K144XV option. You should have received
three 6/32 1/4" black flat head screws, three 6/32 nuts and three #6 lock
washers to put in them to fill them up.

You saved the day! That works perfectly. Somewhere when I was trying to
get set up for RTTY, I thought MIC+LIN had to be on. Old dawg, new trix.
That's something to include in the new, obese manual...

I would have thought LINE OUT was Rx audio.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 strange rx noise

2009-11-27 Thread Joe Wheeler

Martin,
I experienced a similar problem two weeks ago in the WAE RTTY contest. My
K3 is s/n 3035 with sub receiver and I was running 3.57 firmware at the time
with N1MM contest software thru a microHAM micro Keyer II.

The only difference is my problem was in another band section on 80 meters:
3.586 to slightly above 3600...the upper 3/4 of the RTTY section. Your
description of the problem is very good and I would only add that there
seemed to be a complete loss of sensitivity of existing signals in that band
section. I know because I checked on another receiver and that section of
the band was full of RTTY signals I could not hear on the K3. What I did
hear on the K3 was very similar to what you described.

Since I was in the middle of a contest, I did not spend any time trouble
shooting nor do I remember all the settings. This is the only time I have
had the problem and I have not been able to duplicate it again.

I agree, very weird.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Ameritron QSK-5 Connections and Settings

2009-11-27 Thread Paul Christensen
Chuck:

Keep this in mind. The QSK-5's "KEY 2" line activates the PIN diode
circuitry. "KEY 2" activates the QSK-5's input and output relays.

> 2) If Key 2, do you have a jumper from AUX to Key 1?

Ideally, you want to jumper KEY 1 and KEY 2 together with a "Y" cable using
steering diodes. Then, the RELAY line from the QSK-5 connects to the
Ameritron amp. If you use AUX to activate KEY 1, that adds > 1 msec. of
additional delay to system timing. AUX is primarily used for TX INH
handshaking between the amp and transceiver.

This PowerPoint presentation from N6MW is essential to ensure a proper
interconnection between the QSK-5, transceiver, and amplifier:

Re: [Elecraft] K3 macros questions

That suggests that adding enough delay characters (~) after the SWT21;
command (to allow the K3 to finish sending before receiving the ML000;
command) should work. It's probably not practical, but I'll give it a
try and report back.

Not on the same button, but a single tap of the "SUB" button will turn
diversity off...

DV1;

will put you into Diversity mode. You can just tap the SUB button to turn it
off.

DV0;

will turn it off, but it's not possible to toggle it on and off by tapping the
same

Doesn't help when the voice message is being played by the KDVR3
anyway - N1MM Logger really has no idea that that's infact what's
happening - it's just sending the commands that you specify to the
radio.

Send the description of the {END} command in the N1MM help file. I
can't make it work for more than two sequential commands, though.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 macros questions

2009-11-27 Thread Iain MacDonnell - N6ML
Hi John,

I suspect what's happening here is that the three commands are
executed instantly, one after the other, so the monitor is turned on,
the DVR message is kicked off, and the monitor is turned off again -
*immediately*, while the DVR message is just starting. I don't know if
there's any way to delay execution of the last command until the DVR
message has finished.

BTW, I have notes on KDVR3 + N1MM Logger at:

http://www.dseven.org/ar/n1mm-kdvr3

I don't attempt any tricks with the monitor level, though.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Low Receive Sensitivity on High Power - Solved

The problem was with bypass cap C75 in the T-R switch. It had a
resistance of about 1.5 ohms across it. Replacing it solved the
problem. Thanks for the tips.

Please carefully check the configurations in HRD, DM780 and the K3.
Assume they all changed to something you didn't want, and verify they
are all exactly as you really want them.

There have been changes in the K3 firmware, changes in HRD, and changes
in DM780 in the past few months. Occasionally, upgrading the K3
firmware has apparently resulted in unexpected configuration changes in
some isolated cases.

Rather than go back to older firmware, just scroll through all the
OCNFIG settings and be sure they are what you want, and that they do
what you expect.

The K3, HRD and DM780 will all work well together.

73,

Lyle KK7P

You don't need MIC+LIN for RTTY. Just set "MIC SEL" to "line in" when
in "AFSK A" mode, and to whatever you use for a mic when in SSB modes.
The setting is remembered per-mode.

MIC+LIN is useful for things like SSTV, where you flip back and forth
between audio sources during a single QSO.

LINE OUT from the K3 includes Tx audio. LINE IN goes to Tx audio. If
the computer has any path between LINE IN and LINT OUT, you'll get
feedback when you go to transmit.

You have the MIC ON and MIC gain non-zero, so the K3 is using the MIC.
Hence the feedback.

MIC+LIN means "Mic and line simultaneously".

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Monitor feedback

2009-11-27 Thread Mike
Hmmm..

Any voice mode (I don't have FM) I get feedback with MIC+LIN on. Muting
the Line setting in WIndoze (Mine doesn't say whether it's in or out)
kills the feedback. Pulling the line-in or line-out doesn't kill the
feedback.

If the ProSet is laying on top of the rig, there is feedback at all
settings until I move it. Vox is off, so that indicates that the mic is
open all the time. Verified that by putting my hand around the mic,
cupped toward the K3 from a couple of feet away,
*SQUEEL*.

I don't understand the audio path, but ti me it seems like a flaw somewhere.

If I didn't like RTTY so much, I could just set MIC+LIN off, and be happy.

[Elecraft] K3 macros questions

2009-11-27 Thread John Scott
To begin with, I'm not sure if this should be here or on the N1MM
reflector (or both).

I would like to have a macro that will, in effect, allow F1 ... F4 on
the computer keyboard in N1MM to press the DVR keys for me so I don't
have to reach for them, and to turn the monitor function so I can tell if
I sent the right thing and when it ends and then turn the monitor
function off so I don't have to listen to it all the time.

So what I need are the following commands:

1. Turn on the monitor function so I can hear the output of the DVR in
my headphones: ML010; should do it.

2. Emulate the tapping of M1 ... M4 as required: SWTnn; is the command
where nn is one of 21, 31, 35 or 39.

3. Turn the monitor off:   ML000;

This macro would save reaching from the keyboard to the radio during a
contest. I hit the wrong button a few times during the SS-SSB this past
week-end! In effect, it would be just like CW where we do exactly what
I am describing. I know the middle part of this works, because I can do it.

Using the K3 utility the commands: ML010; SWT21;ML00; entered
individually each into one of Macro 9,Macro 10 and Macro 11 work just
fine. However, if I put these three commands into one Macro, the first
and the last are ignored and only the DVR message is played. Nothing in
the headphones. (It's the same for Macros 1 to 8 as for the others.)

Now, in N1MM there is the macro command {CATA1ASC radio_commands}.
According to the N1MM manual, there can be only one CATA1ASC command per
macro, but that command may contain more than one radio command.

In N1MM the command {CATA1ASC SWT21;} works perfectly when placed into
the F1 key for SSB. (You must, however, put a space in the first
character in the table when typing it. This is N1MM's cue NOT to look
for *.wav file). Reference an earlier post from N6ML.

Other other hand in N1MM the command (in F1){CATA1ASC
ML010;SWT21;ML000;} does not work at all. Nothing happens.

Is this a bug in the K3, N1MM or is it intended to be that way in the
first place and I am wasting my time?

Any comments and help would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] K3 and Ameritron QSK-5 Connections and Settings

2009-11-27 Thread Chuck - AE4CW

I've found several posts regarding this combination but would appreciate a
little more information from those who are successfully using it:

1) Which connection are you using between the K3 Key Out and the QSK-5? Key
1 or Key 2?
2) If Key 2, do you have a jumper from AUX to Key 1?
3) Any other connection configurations you are using or have tried?
4) Any connection configurations to avoid?
5) What CONFIG: TX DLY setting are you using (8 ms default)?

For reference my amplifier is an AL-80B.

Thanks for any feedback!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 TX light on

2009-11-27 Thread Chuck - AE4CW

Gene,

I had this problem with HRD/DM780 and reported it to Elecraft several weeks
ago while doing a field test. No one could reproduce it. Here's how I
eventually resolved the problem:

1) VOX is ON, my normal setting for all modes.
2) I was using HRD to communicate from DM780 to the K3 (see DM780->Program
Options->PTT).
3) I changed the selection to "None", i.e. "via soundcard PTT or radio VOX".

With this setting the K3 now returns to receive after a DM780 transmission.

I am convinced something changed between FW 3.44 and 3.47 that causes HRD
communication to the K3 in this particular command sequence to fail. In my
case the failure rate was around 50%. With VOX OFF communications works
with 3.47 onward, but since I normally leave VOX on for all modes, I didn't
want to have to remember to change it to use Data A modes.

Please let me know if this resolution works for you. If so, I'd like to
reopen the issue Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 TX light on

2009-11-27 Thread Robert Fish
Hi Gene,

I have the same setup as you (HRD /DM780) and the same thing happened
when I upgraded to 3.63.
The transmit light stayed on at the end of PSK transmissions. I fixed it
by changing PTT options in DM780
to serial port instead of through HRD. This definitely happened after
upgrading to 3.63. I don't know if this
is a permanent fix as/ /I am worried about conflicts with HRD rig
control as it uses the same port. So far so good though.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Monitor feedback

2009-11-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

Easier than trying to absorb the entire manual, I go to the menu pages
and try to remember what menu items are available - that gives me a good
idea about how the radio can be configured. Then if I want some
particular behavior, I study that portion of the manual. The buttons
are usually relatively easy and self explanatory because they have labels.

You may want to attack your monitor on/off request with a couple of
macros - there is no on/off switch or button without macros.

2009-11-27 Thread Mike
Thanks, Tom -
When I got the manual, my thought was "Wow. That's BIG". Now I'm
thinking it could easily be three or four times the number of pages to
explain everything in detail. OTOH, this group is probably faster than
trying to find it in a printed book. Learning, learning, learning..(sung
to the tune of 'Rawhide').

There doesn't appear to be a way to leave the volume of the monitor set
and just turn it off, correct?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 TX light on

2009-11-27 Thread K2MK
Hi Gene:

Could be your choice of settings for CONFIG:PTT-KEY. Maybe it changed when
3.63 was loaded.

Does it change to receive if you hit your computer escape key?

On 11/25/09 I downloaded latest firmware, MCU 03.63 and DSP1 02.46.

While using HRD/DM780 for PSK31 I now notice the TX light stays on at
the end of a transmission. The light will not go out and the K3 will
not go into receive unless I tap, xmit, atu tune, rx ant, or ant button.

When using version 3.44 beta release and same setup all was well. Has
something changed in the new firmware that I need to reset or did I do
something that would cause this?

Thanks,
Gene W2BXR

[Elecraft] K3 strange rx noise

2009-11-27 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters, i had a strange noise on 80m ssb last night and the night
before. When tuning up the band, the noise set in at exactly 3.686.000
like someone had flipped a switch.
It went away at -say- 3.692.xxx, i can't remember exactly.
When tuning in the opposite direction, it set in 1 or 2 khz below the
frequency where it stopped when tuning upwards, and went away when
tuning below 3.686.000, again like with the flip of a switch. I could
repeat that several times.
It sounded like a totally overloaded frontend.
Like the bandfilter was bypassed. Like the whole 80m-band was received
in that small portion of the band. I heard cw, ssb, harsh noise, all
over this small frequency range, even on a single frequency, no matter
where i tuned.
It imediatelly went away when i switched ON the sub-rx, and IT STAYED
AWAY when i switched the sub-rx OFF again. All back to normal, with
some stations ragchewing in that portion of the band.
This is the best i can describe it with my limited knowledge of the
english language.
I could not get the K3 to do it again. It seems like the K3 was stuck in
a weird condition. Firmware is latest, but it also happened with the
earlier firmware.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Tuning Rate Macro

2009-11-27 Thread drewko
I'd rather just use the VFOA knob for quick QSY-- one revolution = 1
KHz (at the 0.01 rate). That is pretty quick, just count the revs;
don't even have to look at the display. I think the 0.1 rate (= 5 KHz
per rev) is mostly too fast.

What would be nice is a SPLIT function that would accept a number pad
entry for the offset. For example: hit "SPLIT 3". That would be all it
takes to set a split up for 3 KHz. This assumes that splits are "up"
direction only; there would need to be a "negative" key to split
"down". (Perhaps "0" could be used for the negative key in this
case...)

RIT and XIT might also use this scheme: "RIT 3" would turn on RIT
preset to +3KHz; "RIT 03" would be -3KHz. (I guess RIT/XIT would have
to poll for number key entries for a limited time after being
pushed...)

This would have to be a firmware enhancement, unless macros could be
made to read and act upon number key entries.
