[Elecraft] BNC Connectors
I've done a good portion of building a K2, and completely built a K1... But amazingly enough I've never solder terminated a coax link... I guess I've always preferred the look of professionally terminated cabling. But now I need a few simple short patch cables. In the shack I have a decent amount 60+ foot or so of RG58/U and then around 120 foot or so of RG58/AU... Pretty much seems about to be the same stuff with one stranded center and the other solid center conductor. I feel for HF use this coax should be ample for a few 18" patches... Anyone disagree? I may end up using these for VHF as well but doubtful I'd do much of anything over 150Mhz. I'm not married to using the cordage that I have on hand but it would be nice to be able to use that stuff If there is something that would fit better feel free to advise. (I've always been a fan of RG-8x for HAM use and I use RG-217 or better at work always but like I said I'm not terminating those myself...) I've attempted to do this with PL-259 connectors before and was unsuccessful (but I tried to use a less than optimal soldering iron and it took too long to get things hot and I ended up with a short in the end). I've now bought an adequate dual temp weller gun and should have better success. So I guess for the next real question where would one recommend to get PL-259 and BNC connectors for this job. Should I go for solder on or crimp on? I'm more than willing to spend the money for a good crimp tool if need be and its a better option. Anyway I'm open to recommendations as to where one should procure the connectors as well as any tips, tricks, and opinions on what I should use (so long as the opinions come with explanations). ;) Thanks kindly gentlemen. ~Brett (KC7OTG) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] OT: Radios and the TSA
I just got back from a "send an engineer to appease a loud customer by sending an engineer" trip... Now if you ever want a guy why looked like he was doing something weird it was me!!! I took two bags. A barely qualifies for carry on sized suit case with a single change of clothing and an Agilent MSO6104 oscilloscope in it. Then a bag full of all my spare cables and random electronics parts and a laptop. About the only thing that was going for me was that I had a round trip ticket and I was only "staying" at my final destination for about 5 hours. Ended up being a 2.5 day period with no sleep so I'm sure I looked a bit haggard going through security too but I was given little resistance. The worst thing was that someone asked if I had a computer in the suitcase. I said no its an oscilloscope. I could see them say... (a what?). They then said we're going to have to open it up and take a look. I said certainly let me help you with that. They then backed it up and looked at it in the X-Ray again and decided they didn't really need to look inside and they let me go on my merry way. TSA is actually pretty darned reasonable from my experience. ~Brett (KC7OTG) On Thu, 2010-01-28 at 04:55 +, Ken Kopp wrote: > One of Rose's customers who's just returned from an overseas > trip commented that the TSA folks showed little interest in his > K3, and that this may have been due to it being hand-carried > in an obviously made-for-the radio brand-labeled carry case. > > 73! Similar switches are available from many sources. In the US, try www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2049645# which should be available in most stores for $21.99. [Elecraft] Cute audio switch for dual K3s and a computer
I found a nifty audio switch box that lets me route audio from either of two K3s or my computer to a single pair of shack speakers. It even has a leftover switch position that I configured for Rig A on the left speaker and Rig B on the right speaker (not recommended for contesting or for SSB operation of any kind). The device is a Sima SVS-14 and cost about $25 shipped from an Amazon secondary vendor. For me, that beat finding adequate switches and building a box with a lot of connectors. Prices vary wildly and today's price appears to be $40+shipping, which seems high for the application. It's actually an A/V switch intended for home entertainment systems, so it also switches four sources of composite or S-video. There is no video in my shack but I did try using the composite connectors (RCA jacks) to switch my hand key "backwards" through the switch to either K3. That didn't work because the switch grounds the unused video "inputs" which in my case were keying outputs and held the un-switched rig key-down. But I'm still happy with the audio switching. Maybe some day I'll open the box and see if there is a trace I can cut to disable the intentional grounding. 73, /Rick -- Rick Tavan N6XI Truckee, CA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K2 kit recieved
You may also want to purchase a lighted magnifier (the type with an adjustable boom which connects to your desk or has a weighted base). I purchased one at one of the big box office supply stores for about $29. I found it to be a big help examining my soldering. I also used it to make most of the solder connections. It removed much of the stress from the tight solder connections. Maybe I am just old enough that I needed the help. Go slow and enjoy the experience. I spent about two weeks building the kit and was rewarded with a fully operational kit on the first try. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and HF amplifier
I agree! I don't think there is much doubt that Elecraft is interested in producing one or more amp models, but they aren't in any hurry it would seem. They even had a couple of prototypes about 3 years ago at Pacificon, but the K3 took priority, and continues to be (I think) their main attention getter. While they may not be that far away from a "final" design, these things can take a long time to really put the finishing touches on when other things are taking a lot of your time and attention. In any event, I suspect when it finally does come out, it will be fairly sophisticated--auto-tune, etc. It won't be inexpensive either, and I'm not sure it really met the specifications Gary had in mind when he started this thread. John Huffman-3 wrote: > > You can see the video at - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cefcFcvbmh8 > Nice job on your video John! I just wanted to add a comment regarding spectrum displays. I've used many of these over the years including K6STI's DSP Blaster, Spectran, Winrad, PowerSDR and CW Skimmer. I use these mainly to help identify weak DX or QRP signals to keep my brain from imagining ESP signals that aren't really there! I find the waterfall mode (signal strength vs frequency vs time) to be more useful than the pure spectrum analyzer mode (signal strength vs frequency in real time). A waterfall is good for indicating weak and QSB signals that might otherwise get buried in the visual clutter of a pure spectrum analyzer. I've found CW Skimmer's waterfall works best for me and has a nice interface to the K3. Clicking the yellow encoder dots (see display below) on the right side of the waterfall sends the K3 to the exact frequency once you get it set up correctly. http://dxatlas.com/CwSkimmer/ You can also use the computer keyboard Up and Down arrows to jump from one decoder dot to the next and never need to touch a mouse (handy in contests for fast S&P). Skimmer's "Blind Mode" does not display decoded calls (otherwise using it puts you into an assisted category for many contests). 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-and-Computer-Video-tp4463261p4468323.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K2 kit recieved
Hi all, Just thought I'd make a quick post. Got my K2 kit yesterday and started the parts inventory after I got home from work. I spent 2 hours and still have the RF board packages to go through. And I've practically gone blind just doing that. Some of the parts were really difficult to identify like one of the tiny capacitors and the resistor packs. So I'm off to get a magnifying glass and a better lamp today. Love the quality of the kit so far. The packing and quality of the circuit boards etc. just look extraordinary to me. But wow are all those parts tiny. The toroids look like they're going to be just super fun to wind ;). Finally, I'm really glad I bought some good tools. My soldering station with 1/32" tips, .02 solder, pliers and flush cutters and good anti-stat mat from Mouser. I'm going to need those once I start soldering stuff (hopefully by tomorrow night) Really looking forward to it now LS -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K2-kit-recieved-tp4467882p4467882.html Sent from the [K2] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 and HF amplifier
Gary, For those of us here in the USA, the THP HL700 is not approved for sale by the FCC. If anyone wants to purchase one of them, one would need to do so directly from THP in Japan. The 450B is approved for sale by the FCC, and it provides an absolute maximum of 400w output. Your requirement of running on DC power narrows the field greatly. If that were not part of the requirement, the best amp for portable or DXpedition operation is the THP HL-1.1KFX which has a switch mode power supply that can run on any voltage from 100 to 260v AC 50/60 Hz. Regardless of your power supply voltage, the amp will safely provide at least 500w output. It also weighs only 22 lbs (10 kg) so it is quite "portable". 73, Bob Naumann W5OV Array Solutions USA THP Dealer and Warranty Service -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of rfenab...@gmail.com Sent: Wednesday, January 27, 2010 7:06 AM To: Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] K3 and HF amplifier Hi, Well thank you for the many emails getting me on the Elecraft web site without frames. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - KUSB PROBLEM
The KUSB uses a Prolific chipset and it has problems when using slower baud rates and 2 stop bits. I experienced exactly the same behaviour with two different adapters (both using Prolific chipsets, though not bought from Elecraft) when I tested my K2 with KComm. I believe the Keyspan uses an FTDI chipset which is somewhat better. Therefore the solution is probably going to be to use the Keyspan. I did find that the Prolific adapters sometimes work better by setting the serial port settings to 1 stop bit, but the baud rate of the KIO2 is fixed at 4800 so that can't be changed. - Julian, G4ILO. Its easy to get the order page without frames on a BB... ;) Just click this link: http://www.elecraft.com/elecraft_prod_list.htm I just used a real browser and pulled out only the frame you wanted and I'm sending you the link... Hope this gets it done for ya... BTW if you get a better wireless device you'll actually be able to browse webpages as they were meant to be seen... RIM's Browser is TRASH but thankfully they know this and a while back they bought a company that specializes in them. I set things by ear and opted for 1.9Khz for the 1.8Khz filters I had and found that the 1.5Khz filters fit in best at 1.5Khz. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Want to buy a K3
This is similar to what I did... I had a 1.8K filter in my radio and I was using the width knob and I'd crank it to 1.9Khz (which is where I had it set to engage). I then would adjust FC to 1.00 to 1.1 depending on the individuals voice. Then when I saw that the INRAD 1.5K filters were available I cranked my DSP down to 1.5K and started panning around. I was surprised that things were still sounding quite clean and very intelligible. So I ordered two 1.5K filters. Installed them and after a few days of auditioning (including a CQNA SSB Contest) I decided to keep the 1.5K filters and found no trouble finding people who were interested in the 1.8K filters when offered for what I figured a fair price. I'm very much looking forward to FD this year with the 1.5K filters in place. I'm also hoping that I can have a P3 sitting next to my K3 by FD. ~Brett (KC7OTG) On Mon, 2010-01-11 at 20:47 -0800, Ed Muns wrote: > W5WVO wrote: > > One thing the other posters have not mentioned (probably not being SSB > > types) is a narrow filter for SSB. Re: [Elecraft] Anti-static stuff to assemble K3. -- A RETRACTION --
Back on December 13, 2009 Lionel Lhermitte (F6FCD) posted ... Hi David and all, Quick reminder about anti-static stuff. Your pad and hand-strap must NEVER be connected directly to the ground. Between those and the ground a resistor of 1 mega ohm must be inserted. ... and I reply posted ... Actually David, your ESD dissipative mat *should* be connected directly to ground. The 1 Meg resistor is contained somewhere within the ESD wrist strap assembly. Well I've since researched this subject (using industry proprietary sources) and sure enough Lionel was correct about it being acceptable to have a 1M resistor in series with the mat as well. Actually, I found that there are two acceptable configurations, both of which include two 1M resistors. The two configurations are presented pictorially below. BTW, these 1M resistors are built into the ESD equipment so there's nothing that a user needs to do other then plug the equipment together and use it. What Lionel described in his post isn't something someone would be aware of unless they took the time to measure the resistance between various points in the circuit. Well at least I wasn't aware of it! Personally, I wouldn't be too concerned about the 1M resistor in series with the mat. By my math it is statistically insignificant. In contrast the 1M resistor in series with your wrist strap is of life and death importance! 73, Gary KI4GGX K3 #2724 1M 10% +/\/\/\--> Wrist Strap | | |1M 10% +--+/\/\/\--> ESD Mat | | | - "Earth" i.e. third wire ground --- - 1M 10% +/\/\/\--> Wrist Strap | | 1M 10%| +/\/\/\+> ESD Mat | | | - "Earth" i.e. third wire ground --- - __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
