Re: [Elecraft] Does P3 panadapter have brightness control?
You shouldn't even have to go THAT far. The radio should be capable of "fully autonomous" mode ... think of it as a Roomba sweeping up contacts for the contest instead of just .. ahhh ... dirt. Bouncing off of and changing direction at band edges, seeking multipliers, ignoring stations worked, occasionally finding a spot with no refuse and stopping to call "CQ TEST", monitoring other bands, ... etc. On Jul 27, 2010, at 4:42 PM, Brian Alsop wrote: > Wouldn't the ability to have the rig QSY just staring at the position on > the P3 screen be neat. > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] k3 Baud Rate
I have used the K3 with a lot of sound card programs and logging programs but today I ran into a problem using Fldigi. In using the Fldigi(digital sound card software) I noticed something today. I could not get it to communicate with my K3 #3423 but I could get Fldigi to communicate via RS-232 with my #1037 K3. I eventually figured out that Fldigi does not auto baud and I had K3 #1037 set for 38400 and the K3 #3423 for 4800. When I choose 4800 and 2 stop bits then the second K3 worked fine. I set both radios for 38400 under configure RS232 on the K3 and set Fldigi for 38400 baud rate and 1 stop bit and they both work with Fldigi. There are a lot of sound card programs, logging programs, etc. out there now days so if the program will not autobaud then be sure the program and the K3 agree on the baud rate. Hopefully this will save someone a lot of time as it took me awhile to figure it out. Re: [Elecraft] P3 and required options
Dick, Good idea, but I'm not sure it is necessary. I used a prototype P3 in WPX CW in May at P49Y with my K3, serial 0076, which does not have the mod. Now this was in a contest, and I wasn't particularly looking for the weakest signals, but it did seem to interface fine with the older K3, just using the IF output of the K3. BTW: I strongly recommend the P3. Without it I felt "blind" with the K3. Here's what I said in my 3830 writeup about it: >> The K3/P3 combo performed great. The K3 is so good as a CW run radio with its excellent selectivity that you can feel that you are in a "hole" during a run with no idea of general signal levels prevalent on the band (unless you are saddled with someone's key clicks in the passband), but now with the P3, you can see the other signals and get a good picture of what's going on in the neighborhood. Thanks to Wayne and Eric, the owners, to Brian, who built it, and most of all to Alan, N1AL, the P3 designer. Great job guys! It's still a work in process; in fact, Alan even emailed me new firmware Friday that I saw in the dark on my iPhone, but had no way to download (and didn't want to mess with once the power returned). But I have no doubt that it's going to be an essential accessory to all K3-owning contesters. >> 73, andy, ae6y - Original Message - From: "Dick Dievendorff" To: "'Jim Miller KG0KP'" ; "'Elecraft Reflector'" Sent: Tuesday, July 27, 2010 11:34 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3 and required options > You may wish to install the IF Output Gain modification, > http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/IF_Output_Buffer_Gain_Mod_Rev_A.pdf. Re: [Elecraft] P3 and required options
You may wish to install the IF Output Gain modification, http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/IF_Output_Buffer_Gain_Mod_Rev_A.pdf. This mod has already been installed if your rig was built after about September 2009. It isn't essential, but you'll probably want to do this if you have a P3. The mod replaces one resistor. You'll need to connect to the K3's IF output, provided by the KXV3 or KXV3A Rx Antenna, IF out, and Transverter interface option. The KIO3 does not require any changes for the P3. You can install the KXV3A yourself, and the IF Output Gain modification is straightforward. The SMD parts are quite small, and it's easy to lose track of them. Of course you can send your radio in if you'd prefer to have the mod installed at the factory. It took me a few minutes with the SMD part, and you'll want some magnification. But it's just one resistor, and you can use the leaded resistor if you prefer. The upgrade kit includes both a leaded and SMD resistor. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Jim Miller KG0KP Sent: Tuesday, July 27, 2010 11:02 AM To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] P3 and required options Which of the options/upgrades should be installed for the P3 to function at optimum capability? Re: [Elecraft] K2 Rugged?
Neil, The K2 is actually quite sturdy. The enclosure is difficult to damage when all the screws are in place, and the electronics are certainly not physically fragile short of something that would damage the board. You are correct that the most vulnerable items are the BNC connector(s) and the knobs. If you can protect those from impact, the K2 will survive most any reasonable blow. There was someone who made extended side panels for the K2 (and K3 I believe) that extends the side panels out over the rear and face of the K2 and provides added protection. Those side panels along with a foam cover cut for the front and rear would indeed provide all the protection needed - It would not withstand being run over by a vehicle, but that is a different matter. 73, Don W3FPR Neil Shubert wrote: > Hi All, > should I be worried about taking my K2 where I would take my 857 0r 817? > > I really want to but I am more protective of it, its knobs and BNC > connectors > How do they hold up to adventuring? > > > -Neil > > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Thanks to Wayne and Eric for letting me post this here !! Good Morning Gang, I have recently come into possession of several hundred 5ah gel cells. So, as a summer job for my son, these are being charged, load tested, and offered for sale here on the List. Amazon et al want about $12 for similar cells new. Local battery stores want from $16-28, depending on vendor etc. These cell are out of a data center UPS (APC full rack size UPS). All are tested to ensure they charge, deliver 10A (1min test), and recover to 12.6v after the load test. 12.6v O.C. is over 95% state-of- charge, or 'good battery' !! We're using 10 of Mike Bryce's 'Gel Cell Charger's (QST Sept.'09, pg 30) in a gang-charger. Mike's agree'ed to let me offer a charger pcb or charger kit (I have a complete parts list, Mouser PN's) if enough are interested. I'll need to get a minimum of 25 charger pcb's for a board run with Mike, so please let me know if you are interested, I'll put together a bundled price, and let people know. FWIW the test load is 8 ea Radio Shack 10 ohm / 10w ceramic resistors in parallel, easy enough for anyone who wants to duplicate or test on their own. A flat rate box will fit up to 9 of these cells, so here is a price break out for 5AH gell cells (4 lb ea) shipped via USPS FlatRate Box. Price includes S&H: 2 cells, $23 (9lb ship weight) 4 cells, $30 (17lb ship weight) 6 cells, $38 (25lb ship weight) 9 cells, $50 (36lb ship weight) PayPal, check, etc etcPayPal to nskousen (at) ecsecurityinc (dot) com Questions welcome, but there's not much more to it 8-) Niel WA7SSA (good in QRZ) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Wanted: K2 Lid

I earned my ham ticket in 1951 and since then I've strived to improve my operating capabilities and knowledge. One reason is that I had some good Elmers that were positive and motivating. They were leaders who made me want to excel. There are plenty of Elmers on this reflector. This reflector is made up of people of all walks of life but who have one thing in common: We want to excel in our hobby. Comments that degrade us serve only to discourage new hams. When the public hears such comments we all suffer. We can do better. 73, Fred, AE6IC " Do or Do-not. Re: [Elecraft] k2 transmitt problem
Dan, It sounds like your PLL Reference oscillator quit working - so --- Tackle Q19 first. Check the resistance from the source to ground - should be close to 270 ohms. If not, check the soldering on R20 and both the lead tinning and soldering of RFC14. Once Q19 is OK, then you can go on to other points if necessary. 73, Don W3FPR Dan Grizzard wrote: > Hello all, > I have finally gotten to the final stretch of construction and have hit > another snag.
