[Elecraft] K3 #4536 arrives
Hi, My K3/10 arrived today and I have 10 hours in so far and am going to bed. Next step is mouthing the speaker. My fingers are not as nimble as they used to be but so far, I've only dropped three items, a screw, and two washers. All retrieved. The resistance checks were ok and the power-up went well. The only concern now is that phone jack doesn't pull up tight to the front panel and the washer rattles. Off to bed, get up in the morning and finish up. :Looks real nice so far. ...bc nr4c __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility Installation Problem (somewhat OT)
I'm using InnoSetup as well for the K3, P3, W2, and K144XV utilities. I've never heard of this problem before today. I've been using Windows 7 64-bit for a few months now, and I know I have a fair number of Windows 7 customers. Re: [Elecraft] K3DVR vs CW Memories
Be careful. If you are using an interface that provides a hardware PTT - serial port RTS, parallel port PTT or a WinKey based keyer - you will almost certainly have problems with PTT hanging if you add PTT by "software command." Use of both hardware PTT and "software command" has been reported to result in "stuck PTT" with several transceivers including the K3 - and with multiple logging packages. The solution has always been to use only one type of PTT (generally hardware which is more reliable). It appears that more than one transceiver will ignore the opening of an external PTT line if it happens within a few milliseconds of a software PTT OFF command but also ignores the software PTT OFF command if hardware PTT is asserted. 73, ... [Elecraft] Something for contesters
Hey everyone, A few weeks ago three friends in WA got together and ordered PC boards from 5B4AGN for six TXBPF NQN bandpass filter systems with their own band decoders and relay drivers. We then ordered all the parts to build them except for enclosures and the RF connectors. Soon after I got a great deal on a couple Array Solutions filter systems. So I decided not to build the TXBPF kits and would rather sell them to someone who could use them. A completed unit from Bob Henderson is $700-$750 USD plus shipping from Cypress. I would like to sell the TXBPF kits as mentioned above for $500. Thats for everything you need for two units less the enclosures as mentioned above. I am listing this here as they are well suited for use with the K3 since they accept the BCD band data from the accessory connector. If you are local I also have an Optibeam OB12/6 yagi that covers 40, 20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meters for sale that is only about 3-4 years old for $2000. If anyone is interested let me know. After a bit if I don't get any interest I'll post them on QTH or eHam. http://5b4agn.net/ Thanks and 73 Greg AB7R __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Arrives
Mine arrived today as well (#0037). It took significantly less than 90 minutes from opening the box to power up with the K3 even though I took my time and had to stop at one point and take some pictures of a finish issue (bad powder coat on the tilt bail). A suggestion for anyone building one of these early units ... expect to update the firmware (there is already one bug fix) and expect to do the reference calibration even though the manual indicates it should not be necessary. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility Installation Problem (somewhat OT)
Dick, I just ran the install on my Win7 Home Premium box with no problems, and I did not have to run as admin. There is a permission problem. Try going to "C:\Users\Dick\AppData\Local\Temp\" and see if it's marked "read only" or if Win7 prohibits you access. Try to copy something there. That should normally be a writable directory. Win7 just REALLY doesn't want to have updatable files (ie a database or configuration file) under Program Files. Re: [Elecraft] K3 communcation issue solved!
Occam's Razor! Haven't heard that on this list before. Sounds like an adherent of SETI? Regarding the simplest solution is often true, reminds me of the advice of an old mentor back 30-years ago advising me not to be looking for complicated causes for electronic malfunctions, ... "the solution is usually very simple". Regarding non-seated computer cables, that issue "bit" me recently when I could not turn on a remote piece of equipment. The control wire was on a DB-25 plug that had slipped a little so not fully seated. I am now looking for those little hex-nut couplers that provide for securing the plug to the receptacle on sub-D computer connectors. I wish they were supplied when one bought the connectors. My SO2R control panel uses three Sub-D9M and two Sub-D25M panel receptacles for control line connections (and ten RCA-phono connectors). One 9M goes to the computer Serial port and two go to each radio (FT-847 & K3). The two 25M are for control lines to other equipment, towers and antenna switches. They terminate on barrier terminal strips for interconnection to control lines. 73, Ed - KL7UW -- Message: 25 Date: Tue, 3 Aug 2010 16:57:15 -0400 (EDT) From: k...@aol.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 communcation issue solved! Mike, That sounds like you have your MIC SEL menu set for "H" - try tapping the "1" button to change it to "L" so you can set your mic gain higher (and gives you more range). [Elecraft] [K3} Mic gain/noise on xmit
This afternoon, chatting with a couple of locals on 6M, they mentioned I had some noise on my signal. One said it sounded like a radio in the background, the other characterized it as a loud hiss, with some intermittent high pitched blurbs. I disconnected the computer(RS232 & audio IO) and external speakers, and the noise was still there. I turned on the monitor and could hear it. I'm using a Yamaha CM500 connected to the back panel. One of the guys was using a K3, and he commented that he was using the Elecraft hand mic, and his mic gain was set at 30. Mine was set at 9, which gave me 8/9 bars on the ALC meter(ops). A gain setting of 1 gives me the desired 5 bars. Now the monitor sounds like mild atmospheric noise, with a slight static burst every now and then. Is the CM500 that hot? Where else could the noise be coming from? [Elecraft] K3:KPA3 100 w amp
Early KPA3s had some resistors mounted on the PCB so they would "float" in the air probably for cooling purposes. These "floating" resistors were changed out and no longer float on the later PCBs. There were some other subtle changes on the later PCBs. I have K3s with both the early and revised KPA3 boards and have not noticed any difference in the performance of these amps. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility Installation Problem (somewhat OT)
Only the K3 setup program (the installer) needs to be run as an administrator. Like many installation programs, the program files are installed in the Program Files folder, which is shared across all users. Once the K3 Utility is installed, administrative privileges are NOT required to use the K3 Utility program. [Elecraft] K3 Firmware 4.05
While I have found that QRQ works excellent with both 4.03 and 4.05 firmware versions, I think I have a new problem with 4.05. I have programmed QRQ ON/OFF into the PF1 button. In addition to the fully explained RIT/XIT/Split issues, now when I execute QRQ ON, my HIGH CUT/WIDTH buttons switch from LO/HI to SHIFT/WIDTH. When I tap the SHIFT knob, FC *0.58 is displayed in the VFO B area. When I tap the WIDTH knob, BW 0.40 displays in the VFO B area. I can no longer get either of these knobs to revert back to LO/HI. Once I turn QRQ to OFF, those buttons go back to 'normal' operation. NOTE: Having just received my K3 (s/n 4521) on Monday 8/2, it is entirely possible I have something else set incorrect or have not read about this issue with 4.xx firmware. Re: [Elecraft] K3DVR vs CW Memories
I'm with Pete: 4 messages is a bit constricting (I have the same problem with WinTest). Also, in a Multi op situation, when the new operator logs on with Control-O, and if you have them pre-record their messages like I do, each operator's personal messages in his/her own voice are recalled by N1MMLogger. Cant do that with the KDVR. I use a microHAM microKEYER 2 and only record through its built in sound card. Is it just me or am I the only one who cant discern any difference whatsoever in my "canned" messages from the computer to my live mic? If you use a *DIFFERENT* mic and a *DIFFERENT* audio path, there *WILL* be differences in audio. If you record using a different mic and audio "path", or add "effects" like compression or equalization in a audio program, and then play the file in Logger, you *WILL NOT* sound the same as your air mic. The key is to use your "air" microphone and you "air path" for recordings. This way, you will sound the same every time. The KDVR is nice, but in a contesting environment, I have absolutely no use for it. Same for the built in keyer. Glad Elecraft made it an option so that I can spend the money on something else I can actually use. -lu-w4lt- -- Date: Wed, 04 Aug 2010 07:58:43 -0400 From: Pete Smith Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3DVR vs CW Memories To: Bill W4ZV Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: <4c5955f3.1070...@contesting.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed I've seen that, and can see how it would work. However, with only 4 memories, you don't get all the potential variation and situation-specific messages that N1MM provides, nor the possibility of voicing callsigns or serial numbers (which I don't advocate, by the way). For example, N1MM gives you 12 messages when running and another 12 for S&P, so you can have multiple-length CQs and different queries like "Sorry, I didn't get your section" and "Your serial number again, please." Another advantage for phone contesters is that you can re-record your Run CQ message on the fly - extremely useful when you're running split on 40 and 80, and need to change your listening frequency (so I'm told - I'm a CW op myself, almost exclusively) 73, Pete N4ZR The World Contest Station Database, updated daily at www.conteststations.com The Reverse Beacon Network at http://reversebeacon.net, blog at reversebeacon.blogspot.com, spots at telnet.reversebeacon.net, port 7000 No virus found in this outgoing message Checked by PC Tools AntiVirus (6.1.0.25 - 6.14880). http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Now I think I get it: In either SSB or CW mode the KDVR3 gives you the ability to record 90 seconds of audio using the AF REC and play it back with AF PLAY. In CW mode, the REC and M1-M4 buttons utilize the 8 CW memories. In SSB mode they provide for record and play-back of voice messages. [Elecraft] K3 Utility version 1.3.7.26 released for general availability
The new K3 Utility version is not required, but there are a few months of changes, and I'd encourage you to remain more-or-less current. - K3 Utility functions that use EEPROM read and write have been sped up, and are more reliable. This includes configuration save/restore, crystal filter configuration, command macro read/write, RF Gain calibration, power-on banner save/restore, TCXO data entry. Configuration save (at 38400 bps) now takes less than 5 seconds. Reliability improvement comes from a (private) protocol that includes a checksum. This improvement depends on MCU support introduced in K3 MCU firmware version 3.83. Earlier MCU versions continue to use the older technique. - Filter configuration now inhibits enabling a filter wider than 2.8 kHz for CW. This was required as part of the MCU update for QRQ CW. - The K3 Utility no longer sends commands to alter the K3's "auto info" state. N8LP's LP-Bridge wasn't able to support the K3 Utility because it changed Auto Info. That impediment has been removed. LP-Bridge is an N8LP product that allows several PC application programs to apparently share a single COM port that is connected to a K3. You still should not attempt to load K3 firmware through LP-Bridge or any other K3 sharing software, such as microHAM's uRouter. - Fixed a bug in RF Gain calibration that changed the VFO frequency slightly. - Revised Tx Gain calibration to preserve the last-used frequency on each band. - Added a check during K3 firmware load to look for a P3, and if it's present, ask the user to switch the P3 off for K3 firmware load. This is a temporary workaround until P3 firmware supports a "pass thru" for K3 firmware load. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Production Firmware Rev. 4.05: Support for P3 Panadapter
Knut, I like to keep all my versions separate also. Later versions of the utility will create a directory for you. In the "Local folder for Firmware" box, just type it in, or browse to your location, then add the \dirname. After the first time, all you have to change is the dirname. You still have to check the "Copy new files" checkbox, and hit the "Check version now" button, to do the download, THEN hit the "Send checked items to K3" button to do the actual load You are just as much in charge this way, it just hides the somewhat convoluted nav on the Elecraft web site. 73, Mike NF4L. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Production Firmware Rev. 4.05: Support for P3 Panadapter
Hi, OK, that will work for me. I like to be in charge of what I download and where I put it so I don't like to use the utility's automatic update feature. I have a subfolder for every version I have ever downloaded from Elecraft, each with a shortcut to the utility. It would be nice if Elecraft would provide a zip file with all the necessary files, whether it's a beta or not. But I am OK for now. Re: [Elecraft] K3DVR vs CW Memories
I've seen that, and can see how it would work. However, with only 4 memories, you don't get all the potential variation and situation-specific messages that N1MM provides, nor the possibility of voicing callsigns or serial numbers (which I don't advocate, by the way). For example, N1MM gives you 12 messages when running and another 12 for S&P, so you can have multiple-length CQs and different queries like "Sorry, I didn't get your section" and "Your serial number again, please." Another advantage for phone contesters is that you can re-record your Run CQ message on the fly - extremely useful when you're running split on 40 and 80, and need to change your listening frequency (so I'm told - I'm a CW op myself, almost exclusively) 73, Pete N4ZR The World Contest Station Database, updated daily at www.conteststations.com The Reverse Beacon Network at http://reversebeacon.net, blog at reversebeacon.blogspot.com, spots at telnet.reversebeacon.net, port 7000 On 8/4/2010 6:49 AM, Bill W4ZV wrote: > > Pete Smith N4ZR wrote: > >> The trouble is that you give up all the advantages of N1MM's integration >> of logging and message-sending functions, particularly in Enter Sends >> Messages mode. >> >> > I don't think so Pete, although I haven't yet tried this myself: > > http://www.dseven.org/ar/n1mm-kdvr3 > > Whenever 10m comes back to life I'll probably use my KDVR3 in contests. > > 73, Bill > > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3DVR vs CW Memories
Yep, I use this exclusive. Works great, lasts a long time. Only issue is that the ESC button does not stop the audio transmission, but I "fix" that problem by re-mapping an unused contesting key to emulate a "REC" button press (the button in the center of the memory keys which stops playback). The re-mapped key I use (on my keyboard) is the tilde (~) key immediately below the ESC key. Took no time to get used to. And, as already mentioned, the audio is outstanding. Re: [Elecraft] K3DVR vs CW Memories
While you don't get the ability to do all that you can do with the computer's sound card - like voicing callsigns etc., - the K3DVR integrates well with N1MM and sends the 4 messages in the K3 very smoothly and there is no discernable difference in transmitted audio quality. The key is that you don't *need* the computer to use them and you don't need to fuss with sound card levels and all of that stuff. For those of us who chose an archaic mode of communication as our primary mode, this amount of automation for fone is just about perfect. I turn ESM off for those rare occasions when I do fone. 73, Bob W5OV -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Bill W4ZV Sent: Wednesday, August 04, 2010 5:49 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3DVR vs CW Memories Pete Smith N4ZR wrote: > > The trouble is that you give up all the advantages of N1MM's > integration of logging and message-sending functions, particularly in > Enter Sends Messages mode. > I don't think so Pete, although I haven't yet tried this myself: http://www.dseven.org/ar/n1mm-kdvr3 Whenever 10m comes back to life I'll probably use my KDVR3 in contests. 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3DVR-vs-CW-Memories-tp5371027p5372003. html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3DVR vs CW Memories
The trouble is that you give up all the advantages of N1MM's integration of logging and message-sending functions, particularly in Enter Sends Messages mode. Setting up laptop-based message files takes more effort, but there's no inherent reason why they should not sound just as good. You need to be sure that all your recorded messages are set to the same peak amplitude, and adjust the various gain controls between the recorded file and the K3, but once they are set you can forget them. One trick that can help is to run your microphone through the sound card to the rig, and set the sound card's microphone gain to provide the same output level as the recorded messages. Then any other gain control changes you make will affect both your mike and the recorded audio. I regularly use soundcard audio files, while simultaneously recording the entire contest using Sagebrush Software's RecAll Pro. I am still working out some kinks with getting the K3's monitor level where I want it, but I'm sure I can get there. 73, Pete N4ZR The World Contest Station Database, updated daily at www.conteststations.com The Reverse Beacon Network at http://reversebeacon.net, blog at reversebeacon.blogspot.com, spots at telnet.reversebeacon.net, port 7000 On 8/3/2010 11:39 PM, Gary Gregory wrote: > I prefer to use the KDVR for CQ calls and contesting etc. More natural audio > is transmitted than my laptop recordings sound using N1MM...Just my 2 cents > worth...keep the change...(:-)) > > Gary > > On Wed, Aug 4, 2010 at 1:35 PM, Brett Howardwrote: > > >> It only functions in SSB mode it provides no advantage in CW mode >> other than the fact that it can record over the air signals... >> >> ~Brett (N7MG) >> >> On Tue, Aug 3, 2010 at 8:11 PM, Stan Gibbs wrote: >> >>> I've read the manuals and searched the archives, but I'm still unclear >>> >> what >> >>> benefits, if any, the KDVR3 provides over the built-in CW memories for CW >>> mode. >>> >>> I'm also unclear how the two interrelate; does the KDVR3 override or >>> >> replace >> >>> the CW memories when it is installed, or does it function only in SSB >>> >> mode? >> >>> >>> - >>> 73, Stan - KR7C >>> -- >>> View this message in context: >>> >> http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3DVR-vs-CW-Memories-tp5371027p5371027.html >> >>> Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. >>> __ >>> Elecraft mailing list >>> Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft >>> Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm >>> Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net >>> >>> This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net >>> Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html >>> >>> >> __ >> Elecraft mailing list >> Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft >> Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm >> Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net >> >> This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net >> Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html >> >> > > > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
