[Elecraft] (P3) Feature request Span frequency display
Would it be possible to include an option under Span to display the actual frequency of the upper and lower offsets rather than -30 +30 or whatever has been set. So, if you had a CF of 7.038.6 the P3 screen would show 7.008.6 - 7.038.6 - 7.068.6 73 Trevor G0KTN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Handle replacement on K3
Took my K3 along on vacation and this morning when I went to set it up again at home the handle was loose on one end -- one of the nuts had fallen off the bolt inside the case. So now the nut and washer are floating around inside the case. Anyone know if I can just take the side panel off to fix this or do I need to take the top off first? And if this loosening up is common (In the past year since building this I've only used the handle maybe twice) is there a permanent fix, such as a locking nut? 73/Jon AA1K K3 no. 3021 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Wiki Site
It looks as if Thom K3HRN who runs zerobeat.net has been having a clearout. The Zerobeat Elecraft forum has also gone, which is no great loss as it was never used, indeed I suggested to him some time ago that he may as well kill it. The wiki was edited by Don Rasmussen WB8YQJ who used to post on here regularly but hasn't posted since May 18. Possibly Don sold his K3 and was no longer interested, but it's a shame that it was pulled without giving anyone any notice as even if Thom no longer wished to host it, someone else may have volunteered to take it on. Re: [Elecraft] Handle replacement on K3
Yes, removing the cover will give you access to both screws on the handle. I just confirmed that, as the cover on mine is off :) I have used my handle a lot over the last three years without any incident. Probably just wasn't tightened properly the first time or the lock washer was left off inadvertently. Re: [Elecraft] Handle replacement on K3
I can't think of a reason why you can't just take the side panel off, but it might make a difference if you have a KRX3 or a KXV144 inside, which I don't. Yours is the first post I can recall reporting this. If you are concerned about it happening again you could try putting a blob of paint on the thread of the bolt before retightening it, or even some special stuff made for precisely that purpoise (over here it is called Loctite.) Thanks for the tip. The side panel did come off OK by itself, and the nut quickly dropped out onto the work table. But no sign of the washer! I'm sure it had one on when I built the radio, so I'm shaking the radio and searching for it but so far to no avail. I assume it got stuck somewhere inside. Took the top off too but still haven't spotted it. Perhaps it fell out one of the air vents on the top during recent transit but I doubt it. 73/Jon AA1K On 8/22/2010 07:24 AM, Julian, G4ILO wrote: > I can't think of a reason why you can't just take the side panel off, but it > might make a difference if you have a KRX3 or a KXV144 inside, which I > don't. > > Yours is the first post I can recall reporting this. Re: [Elecraft] Handle replacement on K3
What I use for nut-locking compound is plain old fingernail polish. Any color will work, but I use red because it is easy to see. It can be used two ways - to secure nuts and screws, and as an indicator that unauthorized persons have been inside the box - sometimes called "warranty paint". Slather the polish liberally over the screw and threads, as well as over the interface area where the screw head or nut meets the panel. Use the applicator brush to work the paint into the threads. Fingernail polish dries in minutes, perhaps even seconds depending on environmental factors, is inexpensive, and will break away with only a little extra torque on the fastener if you really want it out of the way. Perhaps the XYL even has some she no longer wants, and if so, you won't have to buy any. All this presumes that the nut or screw being secured is not normally visible. If it is, clear polish is available, and works the same way. One bottle lasts for years. Keep it away from plastics unless you don't mind the fact that fingernail polish uses acetone, or an acetone like chemical, as a base, and will dissolve or at least soften some plastics. As always, try it on an inconspicuous area first. - Jim, KL7CC Jon Zaimes AA1K wrote: Thanks for the tip. I'm 100% with Don on this. >I don't understand what all the fuss about specific relays is all about. > Any relay that can handle the current desired and has a 12 volt coil > will do the job. Actually the only common relays that MIGHT be a problem are certain automotive relays intended for intermittent duty use. Some horn and starter relays are not designed for continuous duty. :-) > Relay speed is not a consideration, it will pull in when the K3 is > turned on, and will stay in that state until the K3 is turned off, so > operating time is not a factor, only the contact current rating (must be > sufficient for whatever accessories you wish to power), and the relay > coil must respond to 12 volts and draw less than 500 ma. Which is almost any relay except certain automotive relays. A 6 watt coil is very rare, except in really big relays. Most traditional power relays in the 15 amp contact range will be 150 mA coils or less and cost a couple bucks from mail order houses. 73 Tom __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Is your P3 on the right or left?
Mine is also on top of the K3, and I like it in that position for casual operating. I built a glass shelf unit that will accommodate 3 tiers of K3 sized units with a little room to spare both horizontally and vertically plus a smaller space underneath for paddle, RX antenna controller, etc. On the shelf above the K3 I have the P3 and LP-100A. This arrangement works nicely. Once contest season rolls around, I may relocate the P3 behind my keyboard and below the logging monitor. 73 Craig AC0DS __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Alan and others, Thanks for the quick input and suggestions. Alan, I've played with the QSY function quite a few times since reading your reply. And it seems your software is working properly. I haven't had a problem when tapping the knob firmly to QSY. Thanks for adding that into 032. I loaded the latest version as soon as I received my P3, so I'm not quite sure how I had ended up moving the frequency slightly as I was tapping the knob. Hi Larry. My comments in-line, below: Larry, K2GN wrote: > Well, it's still doing the freeze. > I have found it in the "freeze" state 4 times while I'm not operating, > This remains a big mystery. Indeed. If it is locking up while you are not operating (i.e. transmitting) then that rules out an RF-induced problem. Has the PC been connected/on, or has it locked up without the PC connected? > I've also had it freeze up while Txing 3 times. Obviously RF. Maybe. If the condition is still there, PUNT!!! (Any ideas??) You may possibly have a problem on the main board of the P3. Perhaps there is a problem with the DC-DC converters, and either your 5V or 3.3v is dropping out, causing the MPU to lock-up. I would suggest running the P3 completely disconnected from anything but DC power. Just let it idle, with baseline noise being displayed. If it happens again, you can be pretty sure the fault is internal to the P3. Re: [Elecraft] A K3 CW/DX operating scenario from N6KR
Thanks, Wayne, for the CW hints. Just tried your suggested NR setting and like it in conjunction with the narrow BW. I'm also finding the P3 a BIG help with CW DX operating, especially for finding the new ones before they get posted to the clusters. One thing you didn't mention in your posting that I really like is using the P3 in conjunction with the option of assigning the K3 RIT pot as a quick QSY control. To follow up on your example, after looking at the 10 KHz chunk centered on 7.005, a very quick small turn of the RIT knob moves the center freq. to 7.015 to look at the next 10 KHz chunk. One more move of the center to 7.025 will pretty much cover all the interesting CW. I use this method on all the CW bands and really enjoy it. Re: [Elecraft] NEW TO THE LIST
P3 and LP-PAN / PowerSDR-IF each have strengths and weaknesses. You'll need to do some research to see which suits your situation better. I will just briefly mention three clear differences... The most obvious difference is that P3 doesn't require a PC, and is basically plug-and-play. LP-PAN requires knowledge of PCs and sound cards. Some people find it trivial to set up, but some have difficulty. How your PC is configured plays into this. Another obvious difference is the screen size and resolution. I run mine at 1680x1050 (vs. 480x272 for P3), and can fill the display with the pan and/or waterfall if I want. This provides much better resolution for wide spans. To be fair, P3 provides better resolution at narrow spans, but I suspect you would use wider spans most often. Not so obvious is that PowerSDR-IF is not just a display, but a full receiver with all the DSP bells and whistles and very high quality sound through the sound card outputs. It actually provides two receivers, tied to both VFO A and VFO B, so that you can see and listen to both sides of a split QSO simultaneously without the need for a KRX3 as long as the two signals are within the 192kHz maximum display width. It does not provide diversity reception, or QSK capability. For more specifics, feel free to email or call me directly. Larry N8LP Bob Peters wrote: > > > > Hi All.. Re: [Elecraft] NEW TO THE LIST
Another significant difference is that LP-PAN can be used with other third party software like CW Skimmer, or any future application (band activity analysis, propagation studies, etc) that may require an SDR-type front end. There currently is no such capability with the P3, and none has been discussed for the future. 73, Dave AB7E On 8/22/2010 3:53 PM, N8LP wrote: > P3 and LP-PAN / PowerSDR-IF each have strengths and weaknesses. Re: [Elecraft] NEW TO THE LIST
For completeness' sake, I should mention that there are significant planned hardware and firmware extensions to the P3. I can't go into the details right now, but suffice to say that it will continue to evolve. The P3 can be considered part of the K3 system -- no computer required. 73, Wayne > >> P3 and LP-PAN / PowerSDR-IF each have strengths and weaknesses __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [KX1] Xtal Filter Performance?
I just finished building my KX1, including the KXAT1 and KXB3080 modules. (The KXB3080 is probably the most challenging kit item I've ever built and installed! There are only 19 parts, how hard could it be? ;-) Anyway, everything with the rig seems to be working, but I've noticed the filtering of the unwanted sideband is a bit less than I expected. With my XG2 signal generator connected to the antenna input, I can hear a 1uV signal on both sides of zero beat. The desired side is clearly louder than the undesired side, and with normal band noise I probably wouldn't notice the undesired side. However, a 50uV signal (S9) is very clearly copyable on the unwanted side. I realize that the 3 pole variable bandwidth filter in the KX1 isn't going to provide the same performance as the filters in my K3, but still, I wonder if what I'm hearing is normal. Can anyone with experience with the KX1 comment on whether or not this is normal? Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] Xtal Filter Performance?
Hi Joe, This is normal. A 3-crystal filter at ~5 MHz will definitely allow some opposite-sideband leakthrough, especially when lightly loaded. If you dial the bandwidth way down, the leakthrough will be lessened. 73, Wayne N6KR Joe Planisky wrote: > ...I've noticed > the filtering of the unwanted sideband is a bit less than I > expected > > I realize that the 3 pole variable bandwidth filter in the KX1 isn't > going to provide the same performance as the filters in my K3, but > still, I wonder if what I'm hearing is normal. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] [K3] 250hz 8 pole filter suddenly causes loss of signal strength
I spend 100% of my time operating CW and like narrow filter BW. Usually operate at 350 to 300hz BW, and often tighter, utilizing my 250hz filter. Today as I cranked down the Band Width, I discovered a 24 db drop in signal strength when the 250hz filter switched in. Went back and verified all the Config settings were correct. Filter is ON, Gn 4 db, Filter Frequency Zero (as per manual with 8 pole filters). Can the filter go South for no apparent reason? Or am I missing something. When I switch the filter in line, I basically lose a signal, dropping 4 S units. The only other thing I've done is to align the Reference Oscillator with WWV after connecting a P3. Your input will be appreciated. 73, Art KZ5D __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Using a P3 and Ham Radio Deluxe
I am using HRD v.5 Beta and just turned on my P3. With the P3 off, HRD works fine. With it on, it simply can't read the frequency of my K3 and thus doesn't work. Has anyone experienced this before, and is there a known fix? Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] Xtal Filter Performance?
I took a KX1 to the Philippines with me and I was able to work over 12 different countries including Russia, the North Pole, the Bahamas, as well as pretty much everything in Asia (seriously). I used a 28 AWG wire 28 feet long thrown up into a Coconut tree with 2 pieces of 28 awg wire thrown on the ground.. One 16' and the other 35' long. I worked on 20 and 30 meters all day and night long. That rig impressed me to no end. I wouldn't go on vacation again without it! I use my P3 with the HRD system every day, and I haven't seen this issue. I'm using .28 through .33 now firmware on the P3. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for August 22nd & 23rd, 2010
Good Evening, Twenty meters was good today. Some QSB which varied from place to place. From very rapid and deep to just a slight influence. There was very little noise. As we move into fall I think twenty will gain more strength. Here it feels like autumn with temperatures in the mid forties at night and near sixty in the day. Tomorrow there will be a few warm days but back to what we have now by the next weekend. Time I got all the fire wood I have cut back to the house. Forty meters was once again unable to sustain long distance communications. I thought I heard K1THP very early but got no response to my query. Then I thought I heard NO8V but he too vanished before contact was established. The band was noise with a little fading but the locals were strong. On to the lists => On 14050.5 kHz at 2200z: NO8V - John - MI - K3 - 820 K1THP - Dave - CT - K3 - 686 AB9V - Mike - IN - K3 - 398 K4JPN - Steve - GA - K2 - 1422 W0RSR - Mike - CO - K2 - 5767 K0DTJ - Brian - CA - K3 - 4113 W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457 N0AR - Scott - MN - K2 - 4866 On 7045 kHz at z: WA6ARA - Mike - CA - KX1 - 896 K6DGW - Fred - CA - K3 - 642 K0DTJ - Brian - CA - K3 - 4113 K6PJV - Dale - CA - K3 - 1183 W0RSR - Mike - CO - K2 - 5767 Another sign of seasonal change is here: the sun is setting earlier and further south each day. The berries are going crazy as are the coyotes who eat them. I get a few of them but it has been a little dry to fill out the bushes. I am also seeing the fireweed fade and the foxglove bloom near the top of the stalk. Those are my gauges telling me to get my wood home and under cover. Stay well until we meet again, 73, Kevin. [Elecraft] K1 Question Please?
Hi all. I am at the point on the K1's front panel where I am supposed to solder in the 3 "8 pin IC's" to the front panel. The main chip has a IC Socket installed. I have extra 8 pin IC sockets in my junk box. Is it OK to install the IC sockets or is there a problem with space? Thanks if anyone can help me. 73 de W2EEC Eric __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K1 Question Please?
Eric, I don't think there will be any problem as long as the sockets you have do not interfere with the components around those ICs. The only piece which gets even close to those three ICs on the front panel would be battery compartment, but since ICs in sockets won't be any higher than the main controller in its socket it should not be causing any trouble. [Elecraft] K1 Question Please?
Eric wrote of adding IC sockets on his K1: >Is it OK to install the IC sockets... No. It is *never* permissible to install IC sockets in an Elecraft rig where the designers and the manual did not specify a socket. Elecraft has stated that warranty repair of problems caused by that will not be honored. In some cases, there may be space constraints, but usually this requirement results from the much greater reliability of direct soldered-in ICs. Components like the MPUs on the front panel board, the filter board, and on the auto antenna tuner board are not soldered in because there may be a future need to install a replacement chip with revised system firmware. But on the KNB1, even the MPU is soldered to the board. Soldering in the IC is always the preferable technique, otherwise. Always trust the specifications of the designer! 73, Mike / KK5F __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K1 Question Please?
Alexey wrote of IC socket use where Elecraft did not specify it: > I don't think there will be any problem... That statement is definitely NOT correct. IC socket use where not absolutely required is very bad, amateur, sophmoric engineering. Do so and Elecraft will not repair the problems that your "improvement" of their design causes. Do NOT use IC sockets where Elecraft does NOT specify IC sockets. Ever. Anywhere. Re: [Elecraft] K1 Question Please?
I wholeheartedly agree that I did not consider this topic from the perspective of warranty repairs (never needed it in the past since I do always do it myself). But I had been in a situation in a different country where the cost of a single IC (even though it is very cheap here in US) was close to my TWO MONTH INCOME. And with the high chances of getting a fried chip at the bazaar back then the trouble of installing a socket for almost everything was definitely not sophomoric, amateurish, silly, stupid, or unnecessary - it was a compromise to bring the cost of highly likely repairs down (the cost of trashing entire board due to re-soldering same IC over and over was unacceptable). Can it be installed? Yes. Can it work? Yes. Will it cause problems mechanically for further assembly process? No. Will it be as reliable as soldering? No. Will it be accepted for warranty repairs? No. Will it decrease the chance of breaking the board trying to unsolder the fried or mis-installed IC by an inexperienced builder? Yes. Will it increase the chance of mis-installing IC? Yes. Will it be worth it? Depends on your personal preference. Did I miss anything?
