Re: [Elecraft] UK Elecraft Net (and ROI!)
I have not looked at 40m as yet, it may be worth a go. Conditions were not good on 80m this morning so I had to abort as the only stations were weak to me and a Dutch JOTA station set up half a kc down from us! I will think about 40m and see what can be done. Re: [Elecraft] K3 test mode
Hi Brian, I can appreciate your problem and it would be nice to be able to program or de-program certain button functions. Unfortunately, front panel labeling would be difficult to change. I've often wondered why I have frequently failed to contact stations only to discover that I was in TEST mode. But my problem is different than yours. I failed to take it out of TEST after having intentionally put it into TEST. I seldom use the MODE switch to actually change modes. I prefer to use the quick memories on the M1 through M4 buttons to change modes within a given band. The K3 Frequency Memory Editor is an excellent tool for that purpose. M1 is always my CW segment, M2 is RTTY, M3 is SSB, and M4 is always PSK. But of course changing modes in this manner also changes the frequency to that which I have programmed the buttons. 73, Mike K2MK alsopb wrote: Anybody else pretty fed up with the TEST mode being on the MODE button? Re: [Elecraft] New antenna (Definitely OT)
And then there's the issue of keeping the element sort of the right length as the water breaks up into globules at the far end, not to mention the impact of typical winds on it. I noticed they demonstrated a version with the water running up a plastic pipe, but if you're going to do that a copper or aluminum pipe would be much more efficient. Ships, having a sea water ground plane all around them, get out extremely well with short, loaded vertical antennas. The 'standard' today on large ships is a 22-foot free standing fiberglass whip used across the HF bands. Most ships have two or three of them. Back before CW on MF was dropped from common use, they typically used a 100+ foot end fed wire on 415-500 kHz. Even a 150 foot wire on 600 meters was less than 1/10 wavelength, yet with a few hundred watts ships routinely worked over thousands of miles at night and hundreds of miles in the daytime using CW. The moral of the story for us Hams is that a short vertical is exactly as good as its ground system. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- On 10/17/2010 1:40 AM, Jan Erik Holm wrote: This will go nicely with my K3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tIZUhu21sQ Seawater has electrical conductivity of seven *orders* of magnitude lower than copper! [Elecraft] K1 no output power
Hi I build a K1 (80m, 20m) during the last days and had a lot of fun! The manual is just awesome and I am looking forward to make my first qso with it. Now I have a problem with the tramitter. That is why I joined this list and I was very glad to see, that there is much activity. The rx alignment went well and the resistance and voltage checks of the tx part are all fine. When I first started the tune mode on 80m with 2 watts, it shows me somewhat like 1.7, Q7 became quite hot and something started smelling. I was not able to read the current consumption before I disconnected the source. After double-checking all resistor values, the orientation of all diodes and ICs and the transformers, I tried it again. But now, regardless on what Out-Pwr and Band I choose, the display shows P0.1 in tune mode. I can hear a very weak tone in the K3 standing next to the K1. The current consumption is at about: 60mA rx, 200mA tx I cant see any cold solder connections nor bridges. So I guess I burned Q7 somehow. Any idea what I can do or what went wrong here? How can I test a 2SC1969 and what do I have to check, to make sure, I don't just burn a new one? Hasn't been a problem here but I have occasionally have trouble not holding the tune button long enough and chang antennas instead. I usually catch it but since I currently only use one antenna I've attached a dummy load to the Antenna 2 connection to protect against accidentally tuning or transmitting with no load. A variable length hold setting would be nice but not sure how high on the list I'd place it. Re: [Elecraft] K3 test mode
I agree. The band up/down is really slow. I use the same memory system, although there are times that the press of the MV button doesn't take and I start sending some message. PITA when the amp is on the wrong band. Either that or I hit the VM button by mistake, for which there needs to be a cancel function. This radio needs some quick memories like Kenwood uses. One press saves everything for instant recall. --- On Sun, 10/17/10, Dave Hachadorian k...@arrl.net wrote: The K3's method of changing bands and modes is pretty balky. Drove me nuts too. I found some different felt at the yard goods store and cut a single washer of larger diameter (the same as the recess in the knob) and then glued it into the knob. Now there is only one sliding interface; it's quieter and I was almost able to get the feel I prefer. --- On Sun, 10/17/10, Nate Bargmann n...@n0nb.us wrote: I may end up taking the felt washers from behind the VFO knobs as they're quite noisy. [Elecraft] Observing TX signal
When observing your own SSB transmitted signal on the P3, does the display update while you transmit, or only once when you return to receive, or ??? If the P3 does happen to sweep and display the transmitted signal, is it an accumulation of all of the audio since you went into transmit, or only the last period of time, or ??? How do you get a reliable sweep on the P3 when transmitting on SSB? It might help to turn Config/SWTONE to ON. Re: [Elecraft] Observing TX signal
With the RS232 cable to the K3 disconnected, the P3 continues to sweep (display signal as it arrives) while transmitting. The best way to display SSB is to use averaging and peak modes to show you the spectrum distribution over time. Re: [Elecraft] New antenna (Definitely OT)
Actually, a pretty casual Google search will turn up homebrew designs using a can of high-concentration salt water as an inexpensive (though not very stable) dummy load. And that's pretty much what the salt water antenna would be. 73, Dave AB7E On 10/17/2010 11:30 AM, Kok Chen wrote: On 10/17/2010 1:40 AM, Jan Erik Holm wrote: This will go nicely with my K3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tIZUhu21sQ Seawater has electrical conductivity of seven *orders* of magnitude lower than copper! As a quick and dirty check, I created a simple 10m ground plane antenna in NEC-4. Four counterpoises and a vertical radiating element that is bottom fed, all of equal lengths, with the counterpoises and the feedpoint 1m above seawater (natch!) ground. All elements 0.5 in diameter. With perfectly conducting elements, the feedpoint impedance is just about 35 ohms, with a gain of 4.7 dBi. When I changed the conductivity of the vertical element to 5 mhos/ meter, while keeping the counterpoises as perfectly conducting, the computed gain dropped to -8.2 dBi and the feedpoint impedance is capacitive at 320 -i*250 ohms. I.e., something like 13 dB loss compared to using copper elements. BTW, I could not achieve resonance by extending the length of the radiating element -- I guess you will need a KAT500 in addition to that KPA500 which you use to make up for the missing 13 dB. This could make a good water heater. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for October 17th 18th
Good Evening, Conditions were pretty good on both bands today. Forty meters was loud with QRM, QRN, and QSB but it was still good enough to dig out a good number of folks. Twenty meters was strong enough to gain three East Coast stations. Soon Florida will be available. Weather, except for a few southern stations, was cool to chilly. Even the California folks were commenting on the blast from the Gulf of Alaska. That front did push the clouds south of me so even if it is cool it is very sunny. Not until Friday will there be a return of rain. It will be a good week to stay busy outside. Re: [Elecraft] K3 VOX
I thought this had been put on the wish list, just over a year ago: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Data-mode-VOX-persists-to-USB-td3778881.html?by-user=t#a3778881 There's a real mixture of PTT methods out there - WSJT can use a serial port, WSPR can now use CAT and serial port, HRD can use CAT and serial port JT65-HF can use a serial port - to name a few. The lowest common denominator and simplest option for all these is the use of VOX in data mode. It would be nice to swing back and forth between voice and data without having to worry about whether the VOX is on/off. You could tie up another serial port for PTT in most instances - but that's just more cabling. There's a tendency, in this shack at least, to run more than one application at a time - so there would be contention with a serial port across multiple applications. 73 Julian VK4CMV -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-VOX-tp5326508p5645849.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
