[Elecraft] K144XV K3

2010-12-15 Thread John Ragle
I installed the K144XV module in my K3/100 last evening and checked
it over this morning. With 1 mW showing on the front panel, my SX-600
shows 9 W out into my TE Systems 1452G. This is a nominal figure,
probably good to ~10%.

The installation goes fairly easily...but boy are there lots of
screws! The installation manual needs to be updated in a few places, but
is clear enough. The one minor problem I had was with the connection of
the TMP cables...the connectors are quite stiff and things have to be
aligned very carefully for the plugs to go in. The cable to IF out from
the KXV3A is perhaps 1/4 too short. It makes a bend at the K144XV end,
and it is a little problematic to get it aligned with the jack. I found
a 5 hemostat to be very helpful, particularly on this one connection;
my pudgy fingers just didn't fit into the limited space available.

Needles to say, I continue to be very pleased with the K3. This is
the first time I've had the cover off, and I was surprised to find the
box to be quite empty inside. Aren't SM components wonderful! To an old
geezer like me, the density is quite astonishing.

I look forward to the end of January, when the rig will get its
first real work-out.

If you have the 6-kHz filter installed, you can increase the
effectiveness of the DSP NB with some kinds of noise in SSB mode; just
set WIDTH above 2.8 kHz so this wider filter will be selected.

Or modify your configuration so the wider roofing filter is always
selected in SSB G.

Wayne, this is a place the XFIL button could be made more useful ...
allow it to select the roofing filter independent of the Width
(DSP) setting.

I'm just guessing, but it seems Elecraft took a different approach
in using the very wide bandwidth. This increases the peak amplitude
of the noise pulses, allowing them to be detected at a higher
threshold while, under crowded band conditions, the strongest signal
 remains about the same

 Exactly.

If you need a narrow-band blanker, use the DSP NB. It is very
effective on a wide range of noise types, and is post-crystal filter.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Ameritron RCS-12

2010-12-15 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Mike,

Yes, the KRC2 uses only the AUXBUS signal to obtain the band data.

The output of the KRC2 is that a single band is selected. Actually
there are 2 outputs for each band - one is referred to as the low side
and the other as high side
The low side drivers ground the selected band while the high side
drivers can source voltage to the external relays.

If the relays operate by shorting the wire back to the operating
position to ground, then you would use the low side outputs.
If your relays require that you supply the operating voltage from the
operating position, then you would use the high side outputs. The
voltage can be up to 50 volts, but must be positive.

The KRC2 is quite a versatile little box.

I just completed the RF Gain and S-Meter calibration on my K3 (4521) and all

What is the advantage of leaving SMTR MD set to ABS since I would guess it

If the intent of the S-meter is to give an indication of the signal level at
the antenna spigot, then having the indication change when the attenuator

should give the same reading no matter what. In that case, ABS is the answer.

Some people want to see the S meter move with PRE and ATT.

Others think that the signal level at the antenna connector is what is
important, and PRE and ATT have no effect on that. Looking at it
another way, if S9 = 50 uV into 50 ohms, and if I apply a 50 uV signal

(ABS mode).

Take your pick :-)

I would add that I don't need to see the s-meter jump when I kick in PRE
or fall when I kick in ATT. With my old FT-1000, there were differences in
S levels when I did either, and so for consistency sake, if someone asked
for a signal report, I would cancel either PRE or ATT. With ABS, that's
not necessary. I can hear the difference, don't need to see it :-).

Re: [Elecraft] Calibration

2010-12-15 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
Setting PRE or ATT causing the S-meter go up and down is how analog
radios have worked forever. The S meter was reading the voltage off
the AGC bus which usually controlled the gain of half a dozen tube
stages. Some folks WANT their digital radio to behave like their
previous analog radios and view every divergent behavior as something
potentially wrong with their K3. They'll take the better performance,
but they don't want to learn a new paradigm to use it. Hence a lot of
dual personality items in the K3.

But having the input absolute is indeed useful. In this mode PRE and
ATT are just a range switch for RF gain. Like LOW, MED and HIGH.

Using ABS and calibrated, seeing a 40 over S9 indication (five
MILLIVOLTS or more) on an Italian 40 meter ham signal tells me
something. Like should I REALLY bother trying to override him, or is
he going to SO LOUD in EU, I might as well go find another run
frequency.

I would add that I don't need to see the s-meter jump when I kick in PRE

for a signal report, I would cancel either PRE or ATT. With ABS, that's
not necessary. I can hear the difference, don't need to see it :-).

I just completed the RF Gain and S-Meter calibration on my K3 (4521) and
 all
went smooth. However I am left with a question (of course!). If I leave
 SMTR
MD in NOR, changing PRE or ATT, the affect will be seen on the S-Meter. If
 I
leave SMTR MD in ABS, the S-Meter does not respond to any change in PRE or
 ATT.
What is the advantage of leaving SMTR MD set to ABS since I would guess it
would be meaningful to the operator to actually see the effects of using
 PRE
 and/or ATT?

[Elecraft] Audio Nulling in my K3 in Diversity

2010-12-15 Thread Dave Anderson, K4SV
Hi All,

For the last few weeks I have used the Diversity on the low bands with good
success.

Tonight I came into the shack and found my K3 acting strange. While in
diversity, 4SQ hooked to main RX antenna port and Beverages hook to AUX port,
the same configuration I had for weeks. As I tune the band, the audio nulls
out

about every 0.5KHz where the audio gets very low. The S meter seems unchanged,
only the audio is affected. I switched back to Normal receive and sounds fine.
Then back into Diversity and I get this nulling of the audio again. Sounds as
if a
Auto notch was enabled, buts its OFF.

The radio has been left for three weeks continuously. I recycled power without
change. I am running the latest MCU 4.22 / DSP 2.70 / FPF 1.14, 11-15-2010

I could speculate what it might but I bet this has been seen before. Maybe a
operator thing but nothing was changed in the radio from the last time I used
it

and it worked fine.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Elecraft] Calibration

2010-12-15 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Back in the day I kept a little note that told me how much to add for the
preamp and my attenuator was calibrated in dB. It's nice to have the radio
do the calculation for me.

I especially like the P3 that reports the signal in dBm, not S units.

2010-12-15 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
For Cebik the Ham radio work was obviously a hobby that he wanted to
contribute to.

For someone else, not a Ham, obviously it is not. Even so, it appears all of
his original free articles are still available at no charge. It does require
a simple log-in however, at www.cebik.com

[Elecraft] Audio Nulling in my K3 in Diversity Update = Solved

2010-12-15 Thread Dave Anderson, K4SV
Hi Guy et All,

Sure enough this only happens using an external speaker, the headphones work
fine. Sorry for not seeing this earlier.

I do have SPKRS set to 1. So it appears that when using diversity one must
use Stereo speaker output and or Headphones.

Mystery solved, Thanks for the quick answers

The main ways of getting audio nulling on diversity are setting
CONFIG:SPKRS to 1, or having the left and right speakers actually
shorted out somehow, or getting one speaker cable to one speaker
flipped, and the other not.

Any of those?
