Re: [Elecraft] K144XV (was [K3] XV144 fault (offset problem?))

2010-12-30 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
I haven't built mine yet, but the manual states on pg14 that the local
oscillator power can be controlled in 3 ways:

LO goes off when power is turned off or K2 (K3) is switched to different band

LO is on when power is on and if used with K2, when it's power is on, even if
the Transverter band is not selected

LO is on whenever 12v is applied to J7 on back panel, regardless of the state
of the power or band switches (that's recommended if the crystal oven is
installed)

Sorry, let me qualify that - this is the XV144 we are talking about.
The original question was about the XV144 and someone here misunderstood that
to be K144XV.

MY post (below) refers to the XV144.

2010-12-30 Thread GM0ELP

Hi Roger,
Many thanks for the response, it certainly is very frustrating. I have the
Crystal Oven option installed, so would have to take things apart to see the
crystal markings.

In the manual it says:
Y1 Crystal, 116 MHz 5th Overtone Series Resonant (116.000)

Did the ones Elecraft sent you have (116.000) stamped on them? (144MHz input
= 116MHz LO + 28MHz IF)

Was it the accuracy of the Elecraft crystal parts that was questionable, or
were the markings/parts wrong?

Hopefully Elecraft will check their crystals for the XV144 and comment
before I need to start taking things apart.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: KAT3 Antenna Tuner Question- Update

2010-12-30 Thread KU4AF

Dick,

The K3 will display higher values of SWR if you use the TUNE mode (hold the
XMIT/TUNE button). That will transmit a carrier and display the SWR in the
VFO A display area.

I don't know what the upper limit of this SWR display is, but I just tested
it into a deliberately mismatched load and got 13.2 : 1.

2010-12-30 Thread Roger de Valle
Doug

The crystals originally supplied by Elecraft for the 2m Transverter were
stamped 116.01Mhz so they were always going to be problematic and
off frequency. The ones they replaced the originals with were also
116.01MHz and I really don't know why they were sent unless it was a
mistake. maybe some one from Elecraft could comment.
Given the distance you are off frequency I would suggest you have
similar crystals, by memory there was not offset adjustment available to
correct for the frequency error. Ireplaced them with a locally sourced
crystal of 116.0Mhz and the transverter came up right on frequency.

Regards.

FYI, when I downloaded the 'spectrogram.exe' file from your site I got a

Hi Eric/Matt,
I am using the XV144 not the internal K144XV. For reference source I am
using a beacon and several other local sources (not mine) so definately not
my finger problems. Other than the 12.5KHz offset problem all seems well (as
far as I can tell) : alignment, comms with K3, ptt, sensitivity, tx audio,
power output etc, etc. I have spent the afternoon re-checking component
values but haven't found any mistakes yet. I must have made a mistake
somewhere if this has never been seen before.

[Elecraft] [K2] KDSP2 rave!

2010-12-30 Thread John Shadle
For some reason the noise level was higher than normal at my QTH last
night on 40m. I struggled to pick out the signals at all--but heard a
faint CQ around 7.117 MHz. I fiddled around with the stock crystal
filters as well as the KDSP2's filters but was only able to hear the
signal well after using the denoiser in the KDSP2's menu. I know that
I still have a lot to learn about the KDSP2's functionality, but I
just wanted to comment on what an amazing addition this is to an
already excellent radio! With the KDSP2 denoiser engaged, W6RO (The
Queen Mary, Long Beach, CA) was 339; otherwise, it was very
unworkable.

Also, I find that I like the "soft" filters better than the "hard"
filters from the KDSP2. They seem more pleasing to the ear, in my
opinion.

Having finally finished my K2 in October (after a 2 1/2 year-long
journey) and "throwing away the mic" for a while in order to hone my
CW skills, I have been able to QSO with nearly 1/2 of the US states on
30m and 40m. My goal is to get all states confirmed by May so I can
get my cards checked at RARSfest in Raleigh for WAS 40m CW. Wish me
luck!

[Elecraft] K2 Mods list

2010-12-30 Thread Robert Cochrane
I'm the proud builder / owner of K2 No 3314 which I built in the
evenings at the start of my "retirement".

The reality was that I replaced one full time job with four part time
occupations, two of which involve global travel.

No regrets. Never thought I would be able to visit Mongolia at
temperatures of 40C below and 40C above, or climb the volcanoes of
Nicaragua and El Salvador, or visit the ancient capital of Laos, or
see my old friends from my years in Asia again.

But the K2 has gathered dust under its embroidered felt cover for a
few years - there has never been time to get a temporary license for
these countries. I now want to bring it up to the current
standards. I have already carried out quite a few mods and have
parts sets for some more, but I really need a full list in date and
K2 number order of all the mods which a reasonably competent
un-solderer can make on the boards I already possess.

Can one of the Elecraft Elmers point me in the right direction
please? Off list is fine unless you think the advice is of more
general interest.

Why, and allow others to avoid the same fate as us? Nope. We just
keep greasing that slippery slope!

I found a couple of weeks was all I needed to learn the K3 well enough
to use it in anger during SS. Perhaps I'm a quick study, but other than
tweaking some parameters and getting familiar with button placement, the
radio is quite easy to use despite being a complex device that does a
lot of functions for us.

Enjoy!

Or perhaps the list of K2 mods from the Elecraft order page? They
list K2 serial numbers that began including each and you should be
able to check them off:

Joe, I did almost the same thing, replacing my Mk V. Of course, Yaesu is the
company people love to criticize, but the Mk V is a terrific radio and some
version of the FT1000 has probably put more hams on the Honor Roll than any
other rig.

Nonetheless, if you got used to DXing with the Field, that's just all the
more reason that you'll appreciate the K3. The things the FT1000 does well,
the K3 does even better. And the annoyances of the FT1000 are pretty much
overcome, particularly those relating to the age differences in DSP
technology.

Another bonus is the ease of interfacing with a computer. I used to use
RigBlaster, but now there is no interface at all -- just a serial cable and
two audio cables. Everything is much simpler and works better.

Anything relating to service is way better with Elecraft, too, and this
reflector and the many knowledgeable fans of the K3 are really helpful.

And you'll have a lot more desk space.

[Elecraft] K3 - Indoor HF Antenna

I am unable to get my Windom in the air due to weather conditions, snow,

close. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, guys.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Indoor HF Antenna

2010-12-30 Thread John Ragle
Chuck...

I have a Buddipole that works inside (20/15/10 meters), and I suspect a
half-wave wire dipole or a 300-ohm twin-lead folded dipole would work
well if tacked to the room molding at ceiling height. I have used both
of the latter in compromised situations and have had QSOs without
problems (on CW). Even a random length wire tossed out the window will
work if you have a matching network. All my experience in these
situations has been on CW.

The Buddipole will also make up into a 2-element yagi for 6 meters, and
there is some occasional CW activity there also.

[Elecraft] [K3] Need help: K3 - FLDIGI - Signalink

2010-12-30 Thread Paul
I'm brand new to digital modes (other than CW, and packet from the 80's).

Is anyone up to helping me get the K3 configured with FLDIGI and Signalink?

FLDIGI can receive fine.

FLDIGI can transmit according to my in-line power meter, with the
power set to 25 Watts, but nobody can hear me.

I've got a subscription to gotomeeting so you can operate my computer
and we can chat via gotomeeting's built in VOIP, or I can call you on
the phone.

I'm very computer literate, but this combination has stumped me.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Need help: K3 - FLDIGI - Signalink

2010-12-30 Thread David Herring
Paul,

There's a zillion questions we need answers to in order to help. Here's a few
to get the process started:

Can you hear your transmitted signal? Does it sound right for whatever mode
you are using? Even just turning up the monitor on your K3 and listening to
your audio would be adequate.

Check your volume settings on your computer, your signalink and your rig. None
of them should be completely maxed out, but rather, somewhere within a nominal
range so that there is no distortion being added due to being overdriven.

Are you on the right antenna (if you have multiple ones)?

Good job on running the K3 at 25 watts -- ensures a relatively good clean
signal from the Elecraft.

You say you can receive OK, so that means that you decode the other station's
transmission and can see his text? This proves that you're truly on the same
mode.

I ask these questions, certainly NOT to be offensive, but because they all lead
to mistakes I've made in the past as I was learning how to use this combination
of equipment and ruling them out is a good first step.

The XYL has indicated I may be out of the shack this afternoon so I probably
shouldn't hop on the gotomeeting just now. If my questions don't help, maybe
there's someone else on the reflector who can.

I use a similar combination of FLDIGI, Signalink and K3 with very good results,
so there's nothing wrong with the combination. But to be honest, as I'm going
to be rewiring the station shortly, I'm seriously considering bypassing my
signalink and wiring direct from computer to K3. I don't know that there's any
difference either way, but I figure one less component in the works...one less
thing to deal with... .

Good luck Paul.

73 and Aloha
Dave AH6TD

Re: [Elecraft] spectrogram and Norton...

2010-12-30 Thread John Ragle
There's a reason why Norton comes free with many computers (guess why?).
The program is, IMHO, junk...and it is the first thing that comes off
of any commercial box I or my wife buy. There are at least two problems
with it...(1) it steals 'way too many clock cycles, and (2) it has a
tendency to give specious warnings. The warning about Spectrogram is one
of this type. I think David Gilbert is spot on...Norton is a form of
malware.

If your home is not electrically shielded by a metal frame, and if you
have an antenna tuner, almost any random wire can be made to work as an
antenna if you give it a reasonably effective counterpoise. In general,
the more closely the wire and the counterpoise each approximate a
quarter wave, the better it will work (and the less likely that an
antenna tuner will be needed). Something as simple as a quarter wave
wire connected to the center conductor and a second quarter wave wire
connected to the outer conductor will load just fine with no antenna tuner.

In general, the higher the better. Loaded antennas like the Buddipole,
and other antennas designed for mobile operation are NOT a good choice
for indoor use, mostly because their loading coils make them pretty
inefficient (that is, far too much of the power goes into heat) and
because they tend to be pretty narrow band.

The counterpoise can be almost any available conductor (or group of
conductors. KK9H used the HVAC ducts in his home as a counterpoise on
160M for a while (and may still). I've used a wrought iron fence, or
building structure, or even the green wire in the nearest wall outlet.
Such a counterpoise system can couple RFI into equipment in your home,
both by proximity, and also because of a common defect in many products
called "The Pin One Problem."

It's also possible to build a classic dipole and install it indoors.
When I got back on the air in 2003 after a long period off the air, I
ran a half wave dipole through my attic. I used that for a month or so
until I could get something better on the roof. It worked fine.

With any indoor antenna you're more likely to have RFI issues, simply
because the antenna and the equipment is in closer proximity. Your
transmitter is more likely to cause problems with poorly designed
consumer equipment, and that equipment is more likely to radiate trash
that you hear in your receiver. If you encounter problems, see the RFI
tutorial on my website for solutions.

[Elecraft] Legitimate software vs. antivirus (was: Spectrogram)

2010-12-30 Thread Erik Basilier
I recently changed from Norton to AVG on two computers.

The laptop with 1.4 GHz Pentium M and running XP had N1MM installed on it in
the spring of 09; no update since.

AVG said that N1MM was malware; I let it move the file (I think it was the
main executable) to some quarantine location.

It occurred to me that AVG might be overzealous, and from the comments about
Spectrogram I am reminded about it.

Another observation is that that computer has become very prone to slowness
for several minutes after startup.

The workaround seems to be to leave it on. I guess AVG updates itself more
than Norton.

I also had to configure it not to do scans all the time.

Another computer, a new and fast one running Win 7, recently came up with a
message from AVG saying that the registry was messed up. I was offered to
get it fixed one time free, and to pay for it in the future. I declined,
deciding to use other methods to clean up the registry. I am used to getting
registry cleanup offers from highly suspect sources, and I always decline.
Now it seems like the nice price of AVG is only bait so they can hook you.
Hmmm. maybe even Norton included free registry fixes; I don't remember.

[Elecraft] K1- KAT1 SWR Bridge Adjustment--no voltage variation.

2010-12-30 Thread Rich NU6T
I'm in the final stages of testing/adjusting a newly built KAT1 board in
a 2-band K1 (RF Board rev E). In the SWR Bridge adjustment task, I'm
not seeing any voltage change beyond what seems to be random noise. I'm
using a plastic adjustment tool and a DMM.

I'm concerned I may have installed trimmer C9 backwards. It has a
broad/wide side and a blunted narrower side. Instructions call for the
flat side to the left. The broad side seems curved, so I placed the
narrow side to the left, wide side to the right.

Instructions indicated to follow the pattern on the board for C9
installation, but my board has two holes and what look like horizontal
parentheses with no indication of broad, flat or narrow sides.

The manual notes that the null may be sharp. I'm not seeing it.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: KAT3 Antenna Tuner Question- Update

I believe it goes up to 99:1 (don't ask how I know this).
I think the step you are missing is to turn off the ATU, then press tune
(hold the XMIT button) to see the mismatch. I keep the tune power set low
in case I transmit into the wrong antenna with a 99:1 match.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Mods list

2010-12-30 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Rob.

You don't have that much to add to bring it up to level.
*E850138 - The temperature compensation for the PLL Reference Osc.
**K2KEYMDKT - The Keying Waveshape Mod (also requires updated firmware)
The Extremely Strong Signal Handling Mod - see application notes - no
kit, but requires only 2 1N4148 diodes.*

That is all the official Elecraft mods to bring it up to the current
level. There are unofficial mods as well, but those are usually for a
certain situation - choose wisely, if the intent meets your purposes,
then try it, but if the originator's purpose does not fit you, then
bypass it. Examples of the latter are my K2 Fixed Audio Output mod and
my CW PTT for the K2 (see my webpage www.w3fpr.com).

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Need help: K3 - FLDIGI - Signalink

2010-12-30 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Paul,

Did you set the Line-in level according to the K3 instructions? In TX
TEST mode, drive the ALC indicator up to 4 bars with the 5th bar
flickering. Then use the K3 power control to set the power output level.

Many interface manuals will tell you to adjust the transceiver power
using the audio drive - and while that works with many transceivers that
use the ALC to adjust the power output, it does not work with the K3
since its power control is developed differently.

I don't really know what the Signalink instructions say, but do follow
the instructions in the K3 manual on this setup portion and ignore any
others.

[Elecraft] ALC voltage input to the K2?

2010-12-30 Thread Owen B. Mehegan
I'm working on keying an external amp with my K2. I'm using this
example circuit from the Elecraft site:

http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/Amp_keying_ckt.htm

The amp is a Tokyo Hy-Power HL-45B. In addition to closing the STBY
and GND pins on its accessory jack to key the amp, it also has an ALC
pin that it wants hooked up. The manual says:

"In order to keep the output within the maximum limit and to avoid
signal distortion, ALC connection is most effective. Negative DC
voltage of 0~8V max. will appear according to the amp output level.
When this voltage (ALC voltage) is fed back to the radio, it works to
have the radio’s output power suppressed according to the ALC voltage
applied to the radio."

Is there any convenient place in the K2 where I could feed in this
voltage to get the desired effect?

Re: [Elecraft] K1- KAT1 SWR Bridge Adjustment--no voltage variation.

2010-12-30 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Rich,

You have the capacitor mounted correctly, the narrow end is flat while
the broad end is rounded.
You are also correct to adjust it with a non-metallic tool - both sides
of the capacitor are above ground and will be de-tuned if you touch
either of the plates.

I suspect your problem is not with the capacitor, but with the bi-filar
wound toroid. Check that carefully for the proper leads in the right
holes, and make sure the leads are well tinned - you should be able to
see a bit of tinned lead above the board - if not, be suspicious of it,
even to the point of removing it and re-tinning the leads..

Re: [Elecraft] ALC voltage input to the K2?

2010-12-30 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Owen,

The short answer is NO.

The correct longer answer is that you should use the transceiver power
level to control the output of the amplifier and not depend on the
amplifier ALC. Using the amps ALC to control the power level of the
transceiver is an invitation to distortion and degraded IMD in your
transmit signal - be nice to your ham neighbors and do not use the ALC
for power control.

If the concern is for shutdown of the transceiver in the event of an
amplifier fault condition, then it may be a valid concern, but the K2
was designed before solid state amplifiers became widespread and has no
provision for this type of ALC input.

Bob,
Any radio can be over driven or mis-adjusted and made to sound bad, not just
the
Flex 5K. It's usually the operator and poor setup.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: KAT3 Antenna Tuner Question- Update

2010-12-30 Thread Chuck Shefflette
If I remember correctly, there is a procedure in the K3 manual for manually
setting the L and C values in the ATU. However, if all you're really interested
in is getting the VSWR readings, then all you need do do is turn your power way
down (2-3 W is enough), set the ATU to bypass (press and hold the ATU TUNE
button), then press and hold the TUNE button. The VSWR will be displayed in the
VFO-A display if my memory serves me correctly. This is outlined in the book as
well but it may not be immediately obvious. Personally, I have set the TUN PWR
to 2.5W in the config menu so I don't have to keep adjusting my power to do a
quick antenna check. You might also try K3-EZ. It has a neat VSWR plotting
routine.

I've seen 99:1 readings on very badly mismatched antennas and/or open
connections which is one reason I keep my TUNE PWR set low. The default setting
is "NOR" which uses whatever setting you have for transmit power...

73 And hope to catch you on the air

Re: [Elecraft] Soldering temperature

2010-12-30 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Good points Greg.
While you are quite correct, changing tips often is a pain, so I usually
settle on a 3/32 inch screwdriver (chisel) tip. It has enough heat mass
for most jobs, and the side of the screwdriver tip can be used in
situations where a conical tip would actually be better. If I need a
wide tip, I have a 700 deg F temperature controlled Weller soldering gun
(not the old uncontrolled Wellers) with a 1/4 inch wide tip that I use
to heat up large objects like the shell of the K2 microphone jack (for
grounding it), or the BNC jack on the KX1 transceiver.

It takes both time and heat to damage a board or a component. If you
use the 2 to 3 second "rule of thumb", you will not damage either the
board nor the component. Both can be damaged by "heat soaking" with a
too small or too cold soldering iron because it takes more time for the
pad and component to come up to the point where solder will flow. If
your soldering takes more than 7 or 8 seconds, you are certain to cause
some damage somewhere.

[Elecraft] K3 weird noise generation...??

2010-12-30 Thread Phil Hystad
I came home from work and turned on the K3 and the P3 and then switched to the
CW zone of the 40 meter band. The VFO was about 7.009 as left from my last
visit yesterday. I turned the VFO up just a tiny bit and this strong, like S9+
broadband noise came through. Funny because I remember looking at the spectrum
of the P3 and I did not see anything there.

A long story short. I discovered that this noise was being generated by the
K3. I had checked the band with my Icom 756 Pro III and nothing was there
except lots of CW signals. I tuned the Pro III around the same spots as the
K3. So, I rotated the VFO slow up frequency from 7.009 and at 7.00945 the
noise started and continued up to about 7015.5. Now, on the spectrum this was
a good 50 dB over and above my normal noise floor (sorry, not sure if I am
using the right terminology) and it was the same across the entire spectrum
which by the way was set wider then this frequency range of 7009 to 7015. And,
all other CW signals disappeared and many of them were stronger then this noise
level.

So, if I turned the VFO just past the upper threshold of 7015.5, the noise
disappears entirely and there is nothing but normal display of CW signals on
the spectrum.

I then decided to power off the K3 and P3. Powered back up and this weird
noise phenomena disappeared. Now, the K3 and P3 is acting normal.

Anyone see anything like this?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 weird noise generation...??

2010-12-30 Thread Matt Zilmer
Next time you see something like this, take a look at the VCO control
voltage (PLL1 or PLL2) using the DISP meter function. If the K3 goes
out of lock, it puts out all sorts of garbage audio and the PLL (VCO)
voltage moves around randomly.

I've had this happen on 5 MHz when working with certain MARS
frequencies. I've found it *only* happens when a command sequence
comes from RMS Express - something that puts the K3 in a weird mode
(probably commands too close back to back). I haven't determined what
the command sequence is yet.

If this is what's happening, you probably should discuss it with
Elecraft support.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 weird noise generation...??

2010-12-30 Thread Stephen Prior
Phil

I have seen the same kind of thing twice, only over roughly twice the
frequency range you describe. However on both occasions the only solution
was to do a recalibration of the VCO from the config menu. Simply turning
the K3/P3 off and on did nothing in my case. I recall that on both
occasions the beginning and end of the noise was accompanied by the sound
of a relay operating within the K3. I've not had it now for two or three
weeks.

I run HRD with the K3/P3 as a logging program. This may be significant, I
don't know.

[Elecraft] K2 - Question on control board

2010-12-30 Thread John Wingard
I'm in the process of upgrading my K2/10 (SN 1057) to a K2/100. I am also
finishing up the KAT100 tuner and have a question. The tuner instructions state
to remove C44 from the K2 control board. I have a Revision A control board
without a C44. It also states that if this is the case, a capacitor may have
been soldered directly across R7. On my board, a resistor is installed at R7
(no capacitor). Do I leave R7 in or take it out? Incidentally, I did all of the
Rev A to B mods a number of years ago, so this looks like the only thing left
to check on the control board before proceeding.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Question on control board

2010-12-30 Thread Don Wilhelm
  John,

R7 is needed for the base K2 current sense. You should have changed it
to 1.78 k when you did the A to B upgrade. OTOH, C44 is not used, if
you have any capacitor (to ground) installed that connects to the
emitter of Q11 and one end of R7, remove it, but leave the resistor in.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 weird noise generation...??

2010-12-30 Thread Phil Hystad
I noticed that the width of this noise seemed to be the width of the pass band
since when I changed modes (CW, USB, etc.) the width of the affected frequency
spread changed. It also changed when I adjusted the filter width.

Re: [Elecraft] Latest Sherwood table

2010-12-30 Thread Wayne Burdick
Actually there are two entries in the table, one for 20 meters and one
for 17 meters. Rob needed to do this because the TS590 uses down-
conversion (higher performance) on about half the bands, and up-
conversion on the others, including the WARC bands.

There are question marks entered for a couple of the measurements on
17 m. I won't speculate; perhaps Rob can give us an explanation.

The question mark is foot-noted -- in the ninth column, the measurement is

Good session on gotomeeting this afternoon...I found it quite
instructive. Here is what Don W. wrote me some time ago:

Call again if you need more help. I use a similar combination on my ICOM
910H for WSJT on 2 meters (not much PSK there, in part because of
multipath propagation and in part because it is not the "fashion").

You really ought to have a look at the WSJT pages (google WSJT)...not
too much doing just at the moment wrt meteor scatter, though I heard a
couple of stations today. Peaking on the evening of January 3 will be
the "quadrantids" shower (google again), which should give lively MS
activity. The K3 works beautifully on 6 meters in this (FSK441) mode
with the SignaLink box, though you will have to increase the LIN OUT
setting on the K3 (don't use the digital gain on SpecJT to accomplish
this). Your K3 at 100 watts should work well.

You will also find Europeans (mostly) working PSK63 and higher speed
modes, usually keeping to the region around 14.073 or so.

Also, your K3 will work marvelously in the other modes available in
FLDIGI -- e.g. olivia, hell, etc. -- though in my experience there is
not as much activity.

I look forward to working you "over the air"

[Elecraft] K3 and WSJT/FSK441

2010-12-30 Thread John Ragle
Paul...

Here are my settings for WSJT/FSK441 on the K3 for 6 meters:

K3 with SignaLink USB -- I am using the "high" audio setting on the SL,
as Don W. suggests.

Set K3 at 50.260 for 6 meter MS-- this is the calling frequency, not for
QSO's*
*Set K3 LinOut ~20-30 with SpecJT set for 0 dB
Note: The gain control slider at the bottom edge on SpecJT is the gain for
transfer from SpecJT to WSJT, not an input gain.
Input gain to SpecJT is controlled at the K3 by setting LinOut

Both in and out are the USB Audio Codecs re the SL. Be sure that these
Codecs are enabled and are the defaults
in both Playback and Recording panels: right-click speaker icon in task
bar (WIN 7).

I run about 350 watts output on 6 meters to a 5 element beam at 32 feet,
but your K3/100 barefoot should also work well. As usual, the 3 most
important station features are antenna, antenna, and antenna. I run the
same output on 2 meters into an 11 element beam at 35 feet, using the
ICOM 910H, or slightly less output using the K144XV in my K3.

Mark,

1. Assuming you have MCU version 4.22 installed, set CONFIG:DUAL PB to APF.

2. Hold the DUAL PB (XFIL) button to toggle the APF on/off.

See the release notes for firmware version 4.22 for more details.

Re: [Elecraft] k3 mono/stereo output

2010-12-30 Thread Richard Ferch
Luca,

The CONFIG:L-MIX-R setting does not do anything unless you have a KRX3
and it is turned on. If the subRX is off, I believe you cannot change
the L-MIX-R setting.

If you don't have a subRX or if it is turned off, then are you using the
AFX pseudo-stereo effect? You can turn that off simply by tapping the
AFX button.

Or, if you happen to have CONFIG:SPKR+PH set to YES and CONFIG:SPKRS set
to 1, you will only get audio in one ear. To restore audio to both ears,
either turn SPKR+PH off or set SPKRS to 2.

I hope one of these answers your question.

[Elecraft] K2 output power on 10 meters

2010-12-30 Thread Mike and Alicia Fanning
Hi all,
I have been tweaking on my K2 for the last several days trying to get
the transmit power up to snuff on 10 meters. Right now, the best I
can squeeze out is about 8.5 Watts. I'm in pretty good shape on 12
meters, about 10 Watts there, with max output of 14 Watts on 40m. I
have rewound and elevated T2, adjusted the turns spacing on the low
pass filter toroids L21 and L22, and re-peaked the bandpass filters.
8.5 Watts is as good as I can get. Is this typical for a K2? Is
there something else I need to be looking at?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: [Elecraft] Latest Sherwood table

2010-12-30 Thread juergen

Hi Ed

It will be interesting to see where the FT2000 places with the new
AC0C Network Sciences filter. This radio with the new filter might be bargain
if it does perform well. I dont know if Sherwood will be testing
this new filter radio combination.

I wonder how such a high performance filter would work in the K3? Not that its
needed in the K3. However in the interest of science, it might be a worthy
pursuit. It also might push the K3 well ahead of the FT5000 in ultimate
performance.

PA3AKE in his H mode mixer work has already proven that high performance
roofing filters can make a substantial difference towards achieving ultimate
receiver performance.
