For $7500 you could get four (4) K3/100s, not counting any other
options. Well, it would actually be $7799.80. But if you buy all four
at once, we might just give you 4% off to get it to $7500 :)

(Note: I don't recommend stacking them more than 4-high, but 10 of

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] VCO Test fail

2011-01-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Stephen,

The 4 MHz Oscillator Calibration will only be as correct as your
external frequency counter or your ham-band receiver. You can re-do
that calibration with precision using the N6KR method and receiving WWV
once your K2 is complete. I highly recommend that - see the K2 Dial
Calibration article on my website www.w3fpr.com for all the details.

The "dithering" of the low order digit on the K2 CAL FCTR display is
normal, and is not what is referred to as "rapidly changing".

While the target frequency when you are tuned to 4000 kHz may be off,
there can be a number of reasons for that, including the VCO voltage
alignment. I suggest that you first do the next step which is to check
the DC voltage at the left end of R30 for all band edges. After you
have successfully done that, the other intervening tests. and then run
the VFO Linearization step on page 66 - re-visit the frequency of the
VCO when tuned to 4000 kHz - if it is not correct, then send another
query to the reflector. Any problems here revolve around the VCO which
involves T5 and the capacitors in the VCO circuit. You may want to
check the varactor diodes to be certain they are all of the right type
and are installed correctly. The smaller 1SV149 varactors do not have a
fully rounded back, but the two tapered edges denote the "rounded"
side. Look at them from the top and the rounded side should be obvious.

[Elecraft] [K2] VCO Test fail

2011-01-06 Thread Stephen vk2rh
I'm enjoying building K2 #7076 and have made it to the Alignment and
Test, Part II section on page 63 of the revision H manual.

I've completed the 4MHz Oscillator Calibration check and the PLL
Reference Oscillator Range Test and the K2 is within expected spec.

For the 4 MHz Oscillator Calibration the counter reading was 12098.69
with regular fluctuation 10-20 Hz or so. Is that okay or a sign of
trouble ahead? Wasn't sure whether this was what the manual meant by
'changing rapidly' and whether the readout needs to be rock steady or
not. I've used both an external frequency counter and a K3. The signal
sounds solid to my old ears!

Assuming it was okay I proceeded on to the PLL Ref. Oscillator Range
Test. This yielded a range of 12.46 kHz - within acceptable range from
9.8 - 15 kHz.

However the VCO Test on page 63 results in a frequency of 7470.10
instead of one within the acceptable 8 - 10 MHz range. It's not clear
which parts of the troubleshooting advice apply at such an early
alignment stage. I've checked and re-checked components and solder
joints in the PLL Reference Oscillator and the PLL Synthesizer parts
of the board.

So I'd like any advice about what I need to check or do to get the VCO
Test to land within the correct 8 - 10 MHz frequency range. Most
advice I could find via searching previous email discussions was about
the VCO Alignment which is the next stage, but I figure I need to get
over this hurdle before that next one.

Another goody for Windows users is the free CutePDF Writer. It installs as a
printer and
anything you can send to a printer gets "printed" as a PDF file. Been using
it

Re: [Elecraft] let's see

2011-01-06 Thread Gary Gregory
Depends on whether you want to buy a "Status Symbol" or whether you
want a great portable, DX and CW rig that is at the top of the list
for contesters and DXpeditions alike.

Hmmm...now that's a no brainer in my book...I certainly don't miss my
FTdx-9000D in any way whatsoever.

But there are those in this world with a love of "Cockpit Lights in
the shack", money is not a consideration, desire for a "Big" radio is
strong but performance is not at the very top of their priority list.

The argument for and against each of these radios, and you could add
the IC-7800 into the mix as well, has been thrashed out here
before...bit like that Ol question "what's the best radio money can
buy?"

Guess that's just another example of a great hobby that suits so many
different styles/type of operating be it contesting, rag chewing,
particular mode, particular band and so the list goes on and on.

I have owned some GOOD radios from each of the "Big 3" JA factories
and each time I thought I was happy but after the shine wore off the
receipt the shortcomings started to annoy me somewhat so the search
for that "perfect" rig resumed.

Nearly 3 years ago now I "found" the K3 and times have been great and
the receipt has long faded so I can't see the price anymore but the
enjoyment of the K3 remains and appears to grow stronger every time I
twirl a knob and tap a couple of buttons as I "play" radio.

To my way of thinking this is what the hobby means to me...ENJOYMENT
and RELAXATION and USING my radio, the rest of it just fades into the
background these days.

  Tony,

I can't seem to add as you do. $3500 to $4000 for a fully loaded K3 is
more like the addition I can do. I am not sure how you would come up
with $7500 unless you added the factory assembled K3 and options to the
price of the kits, but that would give you 2 K3s, not just one.

Re: [Elecraft] Transmitting while listening in diversity mode

2011-01-06 Thread Tony Estep
Thanks, Don.

The nulls of my antennas are not very deep, but I guess it's sufficient. The
antennas are just rudimentary wire arrays strung up in the back-yard trees.
My previous wire-in-a-tree setup was described in Mar 2006 QST. Then we
moved to this QTH, and I had to rethink it. This setup is better than what's
depicted in that article, but still not great. The directivity one can
achieve this way is limited, obviously. Still, I hear no COR clicking, and
all seems well, and it is fun to play with diversity reception. In certain
cases it really makes a big difference.

  Tony,

The SubRX is protected by a COR in all cases, so if you do not hear the
COR relay kick in, you are probably OK.

If the two antennas are located in each other's null, then you may have
the "best of all worlds" situation regardless of the physical
separation. There is more to "isolation" than physical separation.

A good way to get K3 documentation onto an iPad is to take the PDF
files for the K3 Owner's manual, Programmer's Manual and schematics
from the Elecraft web site and drop them into the Books section of
iTunes' Library.

You then connect the iPad, navigate into the iPad's Books section in
iTunes and perform a Sync.

Done.

Your searchable documentation are now in the PDF shelf of iBooks in
the iPad. You can magnify the K3 schematics to where you can
actually read it :-).

I don't use my iPad to surf the web or to read email on -- but it is
chock full of PDF documents (patents, white papers, manuals,
schematics). Much easier than riffling through binders for printed
documents.

If you have some document that is not in PDF form, just print it in
Mac OS X, but then select the PDF option (button on bottom left of the
print dialog) to create a PDF file, which you can download to the
iPad. You can remove and insert individual PDF pages using
Preview.app, so it is easy to merge two manuals, or insert some of
your own notes pages into a manual, before downloading them to the iPad.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 and K3 Microphone Input Impedance

2011-01-06 Thread George & Jan
John,
I would not select a radio on the input impedance of the microphone input!
It is not critical at all - should be at least 10 times the microphone
impedance.

Pro-Audio from as far back as the antique Western Electric unbalanced
systems of the 40s tend to be in the range of 1 k to 10 k. Mostly depends on
what the designer wants to emphasize. Lower would tend to reduce noise
pick-up. Higher would tend to load the mic less thus improving S/N. Probably
neither value is significant.

[Elecraft] Wierd Happenings K3/P3

2011-01-06 Thread Jim Sheldon
Had a wierd thing happen this afternoon. I was tuning for RTTY signals on the
high end of 30 meters when all of a sudden, the P3 decided to show a different
frequency than I was listening to. The filter marker was way off the screen
and the displayed frequency on the P3 didn't match the K3. I was NOT in SPLIT
and both the A/B VFO's were indicating the same frequency. The 400 Hz filter
in FL/2 was selected and DUAL PASSBAND was ON.

Couldn't find anything in the manual and restoring the K3's configuration from
one I saved several days ago had no apparent effect on what the P3 was doing -
P3 at that time indicated a frequency of 000.0.

Checked all connections and they were good so I recycled power on the P3 and
then on the K3 to no avail.

Wound up having to do a complete INIT of the K3, cycling power and THEN
reloading the previously saved configuration. Everything was then back to
normal, so I saved that config just in case.

Not sure what happened and if it happens again, I'll try to remember exactly
what was going on at the time of the anomaly.

[Elecraft] K-3 turning on ESSB

2011-01-06 Thread Bruce McLaughlin
I have decided to try ESSB with my K-3. I found the entry TX ESSB in the
config menu and I set it for 3.5. However, the word off appeared at the
left of those figures and it did not change no matter what bandwidth I set.
I don't know whether that is correct or whether I have managed to put the
radio in ESSB mode. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. The
owner's manual seems to suggest that the word off should change to on after
the bandwidth is adjusted. I don't know if that is correct, and if so, how
I can do that. Rotating the VFO A knob changes the bandwidth but does
nothing to change off to on. Rotating the VFO B knob causes it to go to
another menu entry. Thanks in advance for the help.

[Elecraft] K2 and K3 Microphone Input Impedance

2011-01-06 Thread John Huggins, kx4o
Wayne et al.

I am surveying various rigs to see what their microphone input impedance
values might be.

I note the K3 schematics show just about every audio path including the
microphone's path terminated in 10k ohms or so.

In the KSB2 I see 1k ohm (or 180 ohms if /ATTEN is asserted).

Was there a compelling reason for having different termination values, 10k
vs. 1k, between transceiver model lines?

Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 MDS numbers off

2011-01-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Brian,

The XG2 will not work for that purpose at all, the signal level is too
small, and the noise pickup on a 'scope probe will likely be larger than
the signal.

The generator shown in the K2 manual is dirt simple, and does not have
to be carefully assembled. I built one Manhatten style on a small piece
of PC board. The crystal can be any within the tuning range of the K2,
but 40 meters or 30 meters is preferred.
If you have to, just punch some holes in a piece of cardboard to support
the components and solder the leads on the other side - not much
critical as long as you get the correct leads connected together.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 MDS numbers off

2011-01-06 Thread Brian - N5BCN

Many people have suggested using the XG2 as a signal source for signal
tracing.

My understanding from reading a previous post was that the 50 uV output of
the XG2 was too low to perform signal tracing on the receiver circuitry
(however, it's adequate for the transmitter circuitry).

I'd love to use the XG2 because I already have one. Can anyone confirm that
they have signal traced the receiver circuitry using the XG2 as the signal
source?

Thanks everybody?

Re: [Elecraft] OT - SMT breadboarding

2011-01-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Brian,

Have you investigated "Manhatten construction" That is adaptable to SMT
parts. Yes, the IC is usually mounted "dead-bug" fashion. If you bend
the leads in or out so that alternate leads are bent in and the otheer
out, you have double the "error distance" when soldering.

[Elecraft] Info and WTB: HF mini-beam or Hex Beam

2011-01-06 Thread Niel Skousen
I'm looking at getting started on my spring antenna upgrade plans, and am
looking for a) input / comments on available HF mini beams (including the
HexBeam family). So far, I'm leaning toward the Butternut mini-beam, but its
still very early in my selection process and face it, price and availablility
of an under-utilized mini-beam would likely trump the research phase... and b)
obviously, anybody got an under-utilized mini-beam for sale ?... It would
ship to 84780 in So. Utah

[Elecraft] K3: overload protection with multiple rigs on same band?

2011-01-06 Thread Frank R. Oppedijk
Hi,

First: happy new year to all!

At PA6Z contest group, we're thinking about using 2 K3's in the
upcoming CQWW 160 meter contest. This will be the first time we will
be using two rigs on the same band. Of course, we're planning large
antenna separation and we'll perform tests and take power
measurements in advance, but still we're a bit anxious about possible
harmful power levels at the antenna inputs.

If I have read the documentation correctly, the K3 has
carrier-operated relays on every *receive-only* antenna input, but
not at the transmit antenna ports.

So, what about this scenario:

The first K3 is in receive mode. Its operator has just accidentally
hit the 'RX ANT' button, switching the main receiver's antenna from
the beverages on the RX ANT (which has C.O.R. protection) to the
vertical on ANT 1 (which has no C.O.R. protection). Now, when the
second K3 starts transmitting, which protection does the first K3
have, in case the antenna separation alone is not enough to prevent
reduce RF levels on the ANT 1 input to a harmless level.

Should I add outboard protection to the ANT 1 port, switching it to
GND whenever the radio is not keyed?

Thanks for your input, 73,

Frank PA4N

I am not sure they have precisely what you are looking for, but
Sparkfun has many breakout boards.

http://www.sparkfun.com/categories/20

Go to the end of page 2 of the above and there are some SOIC (1.27mm
pitch) and SSOP (0.635mm pitch) to DIP adapters. I think the SSOP to
DIP might fit your needs? If so, they have 8, 16, 20 and 28 pin SSOP
breakout boards/DIP adapters.

I have no connection with them, but I have bought all sorts of stuff
from them in past years, from FTDI breakout boards to shaft encoders
to AVR microprocessor kits. Good vendor. (They also have a low-
quantity PC board making service if you search though their web site.)

Re: [Elecraft] OT - SMT breadboarding

BPS makes a small grid prototype board that will mount a variety of SMT
parts - one board accommodates different size parts.

http://www.busboard.us/pdfs/BPS-MAR-SP3UT-001.pdf

Mouser carries it, and I imagine DigiKey and others as well.

It's tedious to use, but what isn't when prototyping with small SMT parts.

Re: [Elecraft] OT - SMT breadboarding

2011-01-06 Thread Mel Farrer
Yes, dead bug fashion is the standard way, however, I always use a good SMT
single chip prototype PCB rather than tying the leads directly to the chip.
One, the PCB is much more tolerant to stress and Two, the part can easily be
replaced without messing up the rest of the circuit. Several of the electronic
hobby catalogs list them. I usually buy an assortment to have them on hand.

Just how does one breadboard something with IC SMT parts having 0.025"
(or other similarly small) lead spacing? I have a few projects here
that require this.

I was just thinking of gluing the chip dead bug fashion to the
breadboard and soldering tiny wires to the leads.

The problem is that the IC's for any given project tend to have
differing numbers of pins and pin spacings. No one size "adapter" would
most likely be useful.

There must be a better way.

Depending on your needs and budget, something like these might work.

True, there's no one-size-fits-all solution, but something like the P502 would
give you a variety of patterns.

I believe Mouser and Jameco stock their products.

[Elecraft] Setting up the K2 for QSK with a THP amp

2011-01-06 Thread dw
Hey Gang,
A used THP HL-1.5KFx amp fell into my lap recently.
Does anyone on the list use one with a K2?

And if so, do you have any tips for me on how you use it?
- Did you setup the standard QSK TR interface?
- Did you change the Delay setting in your K2?
- Did you ever use it without the QSK TR interface by setting the K2
Relay out of QSK mode?
- Did you setup a band interface cable or did you just manually switch
bands?
- What do you think about the amp?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Utility not connecting

2011-01-06 Thread Tommy Alderman
Bob,

I'm sure you have done this already, but just in case you haven't, your K3
connects to your P3 with your serial cable and the baud rate on the K3 is
fixed between the K3 and P3 at 34800b. Then you connect your PC serial cable
to your P3 and with the P3 you can set the baud rate to what is needed for
your PC. Once you have this set up per the manual instructions, the K3/P3
system will work correct.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 MDS numbers off

2011-01-06 Thread Brian - N5BCN

Peter,

Thanks for the suggestion: T7 checked out ok with proper orientation and
proper number of turns. Another post mentioned checking RFC11, so I'm
checking that next.

Does anyone have a suggestion about a simple test oscillator/rf signal
generator kit to purchase to perform the signal tracing? Buying a dedicated
signal generator is beyond me financially, and building the test oscillator
in Appendix E may be beyond me technically (I'm not very good at
homebrewing).

I've researched wb6dhw's kits, but his website states that he is out of
parts until at least Jan 17, and it appears that his kits are sold as group
buys only.

Does Elecraft sell all the parts necessary to build the test oscillator?

Thanks again for your help!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 power switching

Yes. The K3 is very much like a computer and when you press the "OFF"
switch, you initiate a 'shutdown' procedure that eventually turns off
the power. All of your settings get saved to memory so that it will
start-up next time just the way it was when it was shutdown.

Re: [Elecraft] short BNC to BNC cable assembly, where to get?

2011-01-06 Thread Lew Phelps K6LMP
I suspect the answer is "it depends." I'm sure I could fit an equivalent volume
inside my K3, but I don't have the ATU or the subreceiver or the 100 watt
amplifier installed. Could you fit the pre-amp inside the K3 if all those
options were installed? I don't know, but if it were easy, I suspect that
Elecraft would have done it.

The proposed modification also would require I re-engineering the KXV-3 Receive
Antenna/IF Out/Xverter interface module to allow an "internal" RF connection
for the PR-6. As to the difficulty and cost of doing so, I can't say for sure.
My guess is that you'd have to enlarge the module PC board to accommodate a
second set of RF connectors (whether BNC or SMA or ???) I presume it wouldn't
be too difficult to provide an "internal" power source for the module.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 power switching

2011-01-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Jim,

The K3 has many elements that are computer-like, and those processes
must be shut down in proper sequence. The power switch accomplishes
that feat nicely.
If you turn off the power supply, it is like pulling the plug, and the
K3 will be turned off, but you may find a problem when you try to turn
it on again because some bits get scrambled.

Would you turn off your computer by pulling the plug? Probably not, so
treat your K3 in a similar manner.

PE3020-6 is a 6" RG-58 BNC male to BNC male with one end using a right

You can use the coax cable wizard to find (or customize) almost any cable

Re: [Elecraft] K2 MDS numbers off

2011-01-06 Thread DL2FI. Peter
Brian,

Over the years I had about 3-4 K2 on my workbench being so deaf. All of them
had T7 on the RF board installed reversed. Check T7 if the green winding (5
turns) really is soldered to the solder lugs numbered 1 and 2. If you
reverse this transformer, you will miss about 20 dB gain.

[Elecraft] UPS UK - watch out

2011-01-06 Thread Dave, G4AON
UPS emailed to say my shipment from Elecraft had arrived at East
Midlands Airport and that tax was payable on it. I duly phoned them and
paid the tax. When the parcel arrived it was marked "COD" and the driver
couldn't ascertain if the payment had been made or not, neither could
his office. Unfortunately I had written the payment reference on scrap
of paper and left it at behind at another house. The house was less than
two miles away but the driver refused to wait while I collected it and
said he would only deliver the parcel again if I could quote the payment
reference number.

I had previously had good service from UPS, unfortunately they are now
next to bottom on my list of shipping companies (Parcel Force are at the
bottom).

Re: [Elecraft] win 7 32/64 bit ... caution needed...

2011-01-06 Thread Mike
John,

RE: Your 1a.

After deleting the Linux partitions from Windows, using Acronis Disk Director,
removing GRUB was easy. I Booted from my XP install CD, went into Recovery
Console,
and did 'fixmbr'.
