[Elecraft] K3 - Another push-to-talk question
I have been enjoying operating my K3 for several months. One of my interests includes RTTY. I use the latest MMTTY software (AFSK), have the two audio lines connected, and use VOX to operate this mode. At the same time, the serial cable from the computer to the radio remains connected. Question - Is there a set-up that will allow the computer to signal PTT through the serial cable in order to transmit the RTTY tones, rather than enabling the VOX switch? Doug, The K3 is capable of detecting and using DTR and RTS to operate either the KEY or PTT. See the CONFIG: PTT -- KEY menu item. There is one downside to using these inputs (it also applies the the simple keying circuit in many digital help files). If the computer is booted while the K3 is turned on, those lines will become momentarily active. Just remember to put the K3 in TX TEST before booting the computer. Once the computer has finished its com port tests, there is no problem. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/13/2011 9:10 AM, Doug VE3VS wrote: I have been enjoying operating my K3 for several months. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Another push-to-talk question
Doug, the answer is yes, but the details depend on whether you are using MMTTY stand-alone or from inside another application (like N1MM Logger or Logger32). If you are using MMTTY from inside another application, the easiest way is to let the parent application handle rig control and PTT. The parent application and MMTTY cannot both use the same serial port, and in all likelihood you will want the parent to have access to frequency and other information from the radio. If you are using MMTTY stand-alone, then: Open the MMTTY Setup window and select the TX tab. At the top right is the PTT FSK area. For your situation (AFSK with no serial port other than the rig control port), this should be set to NONE. Below it is a button labelled Radio command. Click on this button to open MMTTY's Radio command window. Here you can select the serial port you are using for radio control with the K3. Do not do this if you are using MMTTY from inside another program that uses the same serial port! You can use this port not only for PTT control, but also for getting frequency information from the radio into the MMTTY log. To do this, you set the port speed, etc. (38400, 8, N, 1), do not check any of the flow control or DTR/RTS boxes, select Kenwood, Elecraft as the Group at the bottom of the window, set Model to Kenwood, Elecraft, and set the Frequency offset to OFF. You will see commands in the Rx and Tx boxes; these are the software commands MMTTY will use to control the radio's PTT switching. MMTTY can also use RTS on this serial port for hardware PTT switching (with the help of the K3's CONFIG:PTT-KEY set to RTS-OFF), but there is a potential problem with this: If the DTR/RTS box is checked and the Rx and Tx Command boxes are not empty, MMTTY will use both software and hardware PTT methods in parallel, which is not a good idea. Several users who have done this have experienced having their K3 stuck in transmit (i.e. failing to switch back to receive when the software commands it to do so). This appears to be due to a race condition in the firmware when software and hardware commands are issued to the radio simultaneously. The work-around is to eliminate one or the other of the two parallel methods, i.e. to use either software (TX; RX;) commands or hardware (RTS or other PTT input), but never both methods at once. 73, Rich VE3KI VE3VS asked: I use the latest MMTTY software (AFSK), have the two audio lines connected, and use VOX to operate this mode. Re: [Elecraft] KAT3 freq range
The schematic shows the values of the inductors and capacitors. From those values, you could easily determine whether or not it could match a specific impedance at a specific frequency. However, specifying SWR tuning range is difficult, because a given SWR can present a whole range of impedances at the tuner. If you really wanted to, you could plot the impedance range on a Smith Chart for each band. From that, you could get an idea SWR range. Perhaps one of the Smith Chart applications could automate that. It could also be done with a spreadsheet. 73, Scott K9MA On Jan 13, 2011, at 8:47 AM, Gary Mohrlant wrote: I have looked at the manual and on line and I haven't found the tuning range of the KAT3 tuner. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Observations during NAQP CW
I use the 200/250 Hz bandwidth only when I really have to. In SP mode on a really crowded band, the narrow bandwidth sometimes makes it possible to find the weak signals between the strong ones. It is useful only for rejecting QRM, not noise. I have used it when running, mainly when I just couldn't find a spot wide enough for the 400 Hz filter. There are two problems with that: Your neighbors almost certainly aren't using filters that narrow, and may take exception to you parking 200 Hz away. And many callers will be so far off your frequency that they will be outside your passband, and right on top of one of the neighbors. Still, sometimes one can make more contacts that way than any other. For years, I've used the FT-1000D with all 4 250/500 Hz filters. The K3 filtering is somewhat better, and more flexible, but the difference isn't great. I know the K3 dynamic range is much better, though I haven't yet run into a situation where it made a difference. 73, Scott K9MA On Jan 12, 2011, at 6:10 PM, Gary Hinson wrote: Yes, my experience is that 200 Hz is MUCH too narrow when running. I normally use 350 or 400 Hz DSP with the 400 Hz roofer. So long as the band is not totally chockablock with wall-to-wall sigs, I quite often listen across 2.7kHz width on CW and occasionally I hear people calling me towards the outer edges. Mostly, though, the wide bandwidth allows me to keep an ear on the QRM on either side of me and perhaps to shift my TX frequency to take advantage of the gaps. It takes practice to be comfortable listening in such wide bandwidths, picking individual sigs out by concentrating on their tone, speed, timing and keying characteristics, but it saves a lot of fiddling around with the RIT or split knobs. That said, when things get real tough or I get tired, I'm very glad of the ability to shift the upper or lower limits independently, the very nice narrow roofing filters and amazing non-ringing DSP good down to less than 50Hz bandwidth. 73 Gary ZL2iFB Scott Ellington Madison, Wisconsin USA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 P3 Beta Firmware Release: Fixed-Tune mode for the P3
K3 firmware revision 4.25 and P3 revision 00.50 are now available. The P3 firmware provides a major new feature: fixed-tune mode. In this mode, frequencies on the P3 display remain fixed, while the VFO A cursor moves across the screen as you tune. Fixed-tune frequency ranges are stored per-band. You can set up the P3 to automatically re- set its center frequency whenever the VFO is tuned off-screen according to one of four auto-adjust modes. K3 firmware revision 4.25 or later is required. Other new P3 features include: * an option to display signal level in S-units instead of dBm * optional solid vs. dotted amplitude graticule lines * additional transverter support * an option to enable or disable the CENTER key in tracking mode * better preamplifier relay control See detailed release notes below. Please send any questions to k3supp...@elecraft.com. For instructions on how to load beta firmware, see: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm 73, Wayne N6KR * * * P3 REV. 00.50 RELEASE NOTES * FIXED TUNING MODE: A new fixed-tuning mode keeps the P3 frequency display constant. Instead of the display tracking the K3 VFO A, the display frequencies stay fixed and the VFO A cursor moves across the screen as the VFO is tuned. Requires K3 firmware version 4.25 or later. * DISABLE CENTER FUNCTION: Added MENU:CenterEn option to disable the CENTER function in tracking mode. Disabled is the default. The CENTER key still works to re-center the display on the VFO A frequency. * DOTTED OR SOLID GRATICULE LINES: Either dotted or solid graticule lines for the amplitude level may be selected via MENU:Lvl Lines. * SCALE EITHER dBm OR S-units +dB over S9: The spectrum vertical scale can now be either dBm or S-units plus dB over S9, as selected in MENU:Lvl Mode. * MENU DEFAULTS TO FW REV: At power-on, the MENU selection defaults to FW Rev. * MENU FUNCTION XV Invert: Added a MENU function XV Invert to indicate whether the spectrum should be inverted or not on each transverter band. * FIXED PER-BAND REF LEVEL STORAGE: Fixed incorrect per-band reference level storage when using MENU:Span Set. * PREAMP STAYS OFF UNDER STRONG SIGNALS: The preamplifier now stays off when strong signals that could overload the ADC are present in the passband. The wrong trip level was used previously. * RELAY CLICKS LESS OFTEN: Modified the preamplifier algorithm to make the relay click less often. K3 REV. 4.25 RELEASE NOTES * P3 FIXED-TUNE MODE SUPPORT: The P3 now has a “fixed-tune” mode, where the displayed range remains constant as the VFO is turned. Requires P3 firmware rev 0.50 or later. * FIXED A/B SWITCH PROBLEM DURING BAND CHANGE: CW or SSB filter setups were sometimes getting changed when a quick memory was recalled, followed by a quick tap of A/B. * For software developers: FW$ GET and BN$ GET commands added. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

The CM500 works just fine in my Thinkpads. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 P3 Beta Firmware Release: Fixed-Tune mode for the P3
I just tried the same thing and couldn't get your results. I checked MCU and DSP1, didn't check the FPF, and it loaded just the MCU and DSP1. This is K3 Utility 1.4.1.8. The intent with Send Checked items is to send exactly what you've checked, no more, and specifically no check for new firmware. Some have gotten into trouble by loading just a new MCU and not seeing that it came with a new FPF (which contains tables referenced by the MCU file). For that reason, I'd recommend generally avoiding use of the View Menu Advanced Mode check item and click either Send New Firmware or Send All Firmware (when you want to install an older revision). Advanced Mode and the checkboxes are there primarily as diagnostic aids and for our firmware developers. There have been a fair number of anxious e-mails and support issues caused by someone loading just the MCU when there was a corresponding FPF upgrade that was required for the MCU to work correctly. This isn't the issue you mentioned, but I would like to generally discourage use of Advanced Mode except in extraordinary diagnostic circumstances. Thanks! Sorry to disagree George. Yes, we have used the words ground loop to somehow describe the coupling of hum and buzz into audio systems, but the words don't make sense if you try to draw an electrical circuit that demonstrates what you are talking about. As a teenager, and subsequently as an EE, I struggled to find any logic in anything I had seen on the topic. Indeed, the problem with the term ground loop is that it causes VERY muddy thinking and outright stupid conclusions about what are good and bad methods of bonding equipment together, to the power system, and to a ground system. The first rational drawing I've ever seen was prepared by Bill Whitlock, the excellent engineer who owns Jensen Transformers. Before joining Jensen more than 25 years ago, Bill designed consoles for Quad Eight and studios for Capitol Records. Bill uses that drawing to clearly show how hum, buzz, and noise is coupled into both balanced and unbalanced audio systems. There are excellent tutorials on his website. google to find it. Bill is also the guy who showed conclusively that when interrupting the shield of balanced cable between line ins and outs to prevent shield current, that the interruption must be on the receiving end, not the sending end. He did this by showing that a noise rejection in a balanced interconnect is the result of a balanced Wheatstone bridge, where the impedances of source and receiver are elements of the bridge. He was recently made a Fellow of the AES for his many contributions to our understanding of these issues. I have adapted and expanded upon Bill's drawings for my own tutorials and lectures. You can see them in http://audiosystemsgroup.com/HamInterfacing.pdf which addresses how these issues should be handled for the UN-balanced connections in a ham station. Re: [Elecraft] CM500
Al the more reason to use only the tip and the sleeve. The K3 jacks are 'stereo', which indicates that a stereo cable will work just fine and cause no additional problems. Since the K3 does not use the ring contact, it makes no difference whether the tip and ring are connected or not - the K3 ignores the ring contact. I am not certain about your situation, but as I understand,in the case of the CM500, the tip is the active AF signal, and the shell is the return (ground). The mono input of the K3 rear panel mic jack will work just fine as long as bias is turned on. If the front panel mic input is the choice, an adapter to a Foster plug is required and bias will have to be turned on. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/13/2011 8:57 PM, Igor Kosvin wrote: I just checked my CM500. Igor, That is normal for an electret mic like the one used in the CM500 headset. [Elecraft] P3 0.50 firmware
I like the fixed interval with the VFO cursor moving. Also calibration in S units instead of db. Very neat and changeable if one needs something else. Two questions. The CENTER button works but only after second press. Is this intentional? The panadapter is affected by pulse noise even if NB in K3 seems to eliminate the noise completely. Then weak stations are not visible even though they are good copy with NB. I wonder whether NB can be added to P3. NB is very effective in SDR-IQ under Spectravue. [Elecraft] P3 0.050 Glitch?
I just downloaded the new software for the P3 the K3 and everything went well.. I set the P3 to display S meter readings (not DBM) and I noticed something when I went to the 6 meter band. I put a dummy load on the K3 and went through all the bands and set the REF LVL on the P3 so the base line is at S1 all went well till I got to the 6 meter band . the Ref Lvl on the P3 is set to 125 on all bands untill I get to 6 meters. now I have to set the Ref Lvl to 144 to get S1 to show at the bottom of the P3 and now the base line is at S5 and it should be down at S1 like all the other bands. this is with a dummy load attached right at the antenna connector of the K3..just switching between 10 6 meters its like there is too much output to the P3 when going to 6... am I missing something? Re: [Elecraft] P3 0.050 Glitch?
According to IARU Region 1 recommendation R.1, the standard for S9 on frequencies below 30 MHz is -73 dBm but it is -93 dBm for frequencies above 144 MHz. Unfortunately it doesn't say what to do about the 50 MHz band, but Googling around on the Internet it appears that since 6 meters is considered a VHF band, most people assume it should use the -93 dBm figure. So that's what I went with in the P3. Alan N1AL On Thu, 2011-01-13 at 21:38 -0800, K7WIA wrote: I just downloaded the new software for the P3 the K3 and everything went well.. Re: [Elecraft] P3 0.050 Glitch?
Thanks Alan, that explains the error, BUT without a antenna connected It should not show S5 when the K3's S meter just blinks once in a while. I would sure like it to be set like it is on the HF bands. now when the antenna is connected, living in the city the base line will jump up 2 S units and be S7. and the S meter on the K3 will blink between S2 S3 Could the 6 meter gain be incorprated thto the menu XV Gain (transverter Gain) then we would have the choice between the 2 standard to use, as now most of us are still using 50 mv=S9 Ed -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-0-050-Glitch-tp5920743p5920807.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] (no subject)
This is from the ARRL web site: *Licensing information for Israel - 4X* * * Date: December 2008 from 4X6KJ (see addition) Intro: Israel implements CEPT T/R 61-01 and 02; reciprocal licenses are given to visitors by IARC. see CEPT instructions of Israelhttp://www.qsl.net/oh2mcn/4x_cept.pdf All visitors' licenses handled by IARC if not according to CEPT T/R 61-01 and 02. Address: Israel Amateur Radio Club http://w3.iarc.org/ P.O.Box 17600 Tel Aviv 61176 Israel Remarks: The Israel Amateur Radio Club can help in obtaining a reciprocal license. Application form 006 http://www.qsl.net/oh2mcn/4xa.pdfis here attached and information as to what other documents are required. See also IARC homepagehttp://w3.iarc.org/ . The best way to get a license: Amateurs coming from countries that have CEPT implemented the CEPT T/R 61-01 agreement, do not have to apply for any reciprocal license. They can bring their equipment, and operate in Israel for a period of up to 3 months, providing that they have a valid home country license with them. Their call sign is as follows, 4 X / and home call. (see CEPThttp://www.qsl.net/oh2mcn/cept.htm and special CEPT instructions of Israel http://www.qsl.net/oh2mcn/4x_cept.pdf) NON-EUROPEAN countries that have CEPT implemented the CEPT T/R 61-01 agreement, do not have to apply for any reciprocal license. Participating countries are: Australia, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, Netherlands Antilles, Peru, South Africa, and USA. Amateurs coming from countries that have CEPT implemented the CEPT T/R 61-02 agreement, have to apply for a reciprocal license if staying for a period of more than 3 months. Being that the above mentioned countries are now participating in the CEPT Recommendation T/R 61-01 as one of the non-European Countries, implementing this licensing agreement, just like Israel has done some years ago. It is not necessary anymore to apply and file any paperwork concerning, a temporary amateur radio reciprocal license. Under the CEPT Recommendation T/R 61-01 you are allowed to operate your amateur radio equipment for a period of up to 3 months, according to your own (home country) licensing conditions and the prevailing rules of the country being visited. (Bring your present valid license with you) Israel is in IARU Region 1, which has a slightly different band plan and power limits. Any other country, that does not participate in the CEPT agreements, will have to notify the Israel Amateur Radio Club ( see form 006) Looks like you just have to bring original license. But I would email the Israel Amateur Radio Club just to make sure. Of course you have to operate within their rules while there, so study up. They will be different than US.
