[Elecraft] K3 Power puzzlement

2011-01-18 Thread Mike Morrow
The meter (Watt's Up) is in the 13.8v line in series with the K3.

This must be a joke, right? April 1 isn't for another ten weeks! :-)

I don't know of a commercial product, but I have built such a switch

so-so reviews and the NCS Multi-Switch seems way overkill for this.

 Perhaps a home-brewed Y-Cable might work?

Just curious what other have come up with to plug two mics into the K2.

2011-01-18 Thread Craig D. Smith
Good Morning Ralph .

I certainly owe you an apology - I was familiar with this meter:

http://cableorganizer.com/electricity-power-meter/

and not familiar with the DC version with the same name that you are using.
I'm very sorry for jumping to an incorrect conclusion without looking into
it further. Indeed, the meter you are using should be able to provide a
reasonable measurement of the DC current. My bad!

But with your measured current, you should be dissipating about 20 watts
somewhere in the K3 with it off. Unless something is getting quite warm I
would still be looking for some kind of measurement anomaly.

Again, I'm sorry for my error.

[Elecraft] K2 low audio problem

2011-01-18 Thread Tony Breathnach
Recently I had a microphone problem with my K2 which resulted from a dry joint
on the SSB board. I cured the problem but in the process of reassembly the rigs
audio took a dive. The only two units that I had removed were the SSB unit and
the 100 Watt PA. The rig is receiving ok because I can see the S meter. However
receiver audio is very low and this includes the sidetone level which I have
set at 60. I have plugged in the original speaker directly (omitting the 100W
PA). However the audio is still low. This is a mystery to me because everything
was fine until I repaired the microphone problem and reassembled the K2.

[Elecraft] K3 TX spurs?

2011-01-18 Thread Rose
I think I recall a thread about spurs being produced by
a K3's TX, but didn't pay enough attention at the time.

I've since become aware of a K3 that appeared to have
two spurs showing up on my P3. They were about 30db
down from his very strong carrier on 7031 KHZ, and equally
spaced about 1 KHZ on either side. They both could be
tuned in and copied as individual signals. I was surprised
when I asked the fella what his rig was and he told me it is a
K3. (;-)

I have -not- seen these spurs appear on other strong signals
since this event, and follow-up tests with him have not shown
the spurs ... but ... I've not seen his signal as strong as it was
at the time.

There's no doubt they were real, but what might be the
cause? Is / was the problem with his K3, my K3 or my P3.

Thoughts?

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Power puzzlement

2011-01-18 Thread David Christ
It certainly would be simple enough to get some resistors, measure
them and the voltage. Put the voltage across various combinations
and see how calculated current using ohms law compares to the meter
reading. You could probably use a 50 ohm dummy load. That would be
around 250 to 300 ma. Only about 3 to 5 watts. You will at least
get an idea it the unit measures under 1 amp reasonably well.

Or even simpler, find someone with a Simpson model 260 VOM. It
measures DC up to 10 amps.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 TX spurs?

2011-01-18 Thread Scott Ellington
During the recent NAQP, I heard these 1 kHz sidebands on a nearby station's
signal on 160. (Perhaps the same station Ken heard?) It turns out, his K3 was
overloading his wimpy power supply, and making it go into current limit. There
was no sign of the spurs at slightly lower power. He could see fluctuations in
the supply voltage on the K3 internal meter whenever the spurs appeared. With
an adequate power supply, of course, the K3 is very, very clean.

By the way, while we were checking that out we did a quick comparison of key
clicks from my K3 and FT-1000D (with the W8JI mods). The K3 was much better.
And I know the FT-1000D was much worse before the mods. It is best to have
neighbors with K3's. (But with good power supplies.)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 TX spurs?

2011-01-18 Thread Willard Myers
One possibility: “microphonics” modulating the synthesizer. The source is
typically the sidetone being played through the internal speaker. A quick fix
is to not use the internal speaker. The solid fix is the Elecraft synthesizer
stiffener mod kit.

Easy to determine if this is the problem: change PITCH and see if the offset of
the spurs changes.

I’ve seen this on a friend’s unit. The spurs were present, but diminished, with
an external speaker. The mod kit stamped them out.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 low audio problem

2011-01-18 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Tony,

Did you plug the KSB2 in correctly? Check it again.
If that does not fix it, remove the KSB2 board and stick some jumper
wires between pin 1 and 3 of both J9 and J10. Does the audio come back
to normal? If so, there is a problem on the KSB2 board.

If that does not fix it, check to see if you have the RX ANT turned on
in the menu.
If you have an XG1 or XG2, try that and see if you get anywhere near an
S-9 indication on the S-meter.

You may be in for some signal tracing it those quick checks do not
reveal the problem.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3/K144XV/P3 Signal Strength Readings

Having calibrated the K3 S meter and the P3 display with my XG2, I have 50
microvolts equal to S9 and -73dbm (whether or not the preamp is on).
 However, on 2m (K144XV) there is a discrepancy between the K3 S
meter and the P3. I believe Alan has told us on the reflector that on 2m
S9 on the P3 is -93dbm in accordance with the IARU standard, but I also
believe that when using the K144XV the K3 S meter still regards S9
 as -73dbm
which is different by a factor of 10.

Consequently K3 S meter readings are lower on 2m than they should be.
 Today,
for example, I had a 2m qso where the two stations I was working were
 about
S7 on the P3 but S3/4 on the K3 S meter. Is anything going on in the
Elecraft f/w academy to address this?

[Elecraft] Front panel BIAS

2011-01-18 Thread Bill Conkling
Hi,

I just rec'd my second CM500 from Amazon. I was about to make a connector
for the front panel and thought I'd try the Heil adapter just to see if it
would work. I plugged in the adapter, and the CM500 and put the K3 in test
mode. Switched the meter to read ALC/cmp. I then set the mic input to FPL
BIAS and nothing. No audio. I inserted the little bias supply from
YAMAHA and the mic worked as expected.

My plan was to connect the tip of the mic plug to the mic input (pin 1),
and the shield to the mic grnd (pin 7). Do I need to connect the 'ring' to
some other pin? For my Kenwood, I connected it with a 3.3K resistor to the
+8V. I assumed the BIAS setting on the K3 would take care of this and put
it on the mic input.

Am I missing something? I Have K3 serial no 4536 and was unaware of any
issues with the front panel mic input. I have so far run my Heil HM-10 Dual
on the front panel and the CM500 on the rear. But I'm getting ready for the
spring/summer portable season and want both CM500's on the rig.

Any ideas?

  Brian,

Actually, that does not make a lot of sense. The T/R switch is too far
removed from the KNB2 for that to be a problem (unless you were really
wild with the soldering iron :-) ).

Try jumpering (with a piece of bent wire) between pins 1 and 6 of the
J12 header. If receive comes back to life, you have a problem on the
KNB2 board.

Let us know the results.

2011-01-18 Thread Brian Denley
Don was right! I had taken the SSB adaptor out and that (without jumpers)
rendered the K2 non-functional. Putting the KSB2 back in and adding the
pin1 to pin 6 jumper at J12 (as Don suggested) brought my K2 back to life!
Now I still have to figure out what is wrong with my KNB2...
Thanks again Don!

  Brian,

Actually, that does not make a lot of sense. The T/R switch is too far
removed from the KNB2 for that to be a problem (unless you were really
wild with the soldering iron :-) ).

Try jumpering (with a piece of bent wire) between pins 1 and 6 of the J12
header. If receive comes back to life, you have a problem on the KNB2
 board.

 Let us know the results.

[Elecraft] K3 antenna tuner.

2011-01-18 Thread van fair
I am trying to decide on an antenna for use at a DX location for 40 meters and
up for an upcoming trip to V4 land.

I can put up an inverted V dipole at 40 feet high with a length of up to 45
feet on each side of center. I plan to use a 4 to 1 Balun and 450 ohm window
line 30 feet long.

Anyone have any experience on how the K3 antenna tuner would handle this
antenna. on 40 through 10 meters.

Thanks for your help. Van W4GIW V47GIW a ham for 59 years.
