[Elecraft] Computer question - OT

2011-03-01 Thread Phillip Shepard
My old Dell desktop is not cutting it anymore, and I'm going to replace it.
This will not be the shack computer - I will use it in an office for general
use as well as photo image processing duties. I see that Costco has very
attractive prices for the seemingly high level of performance in a line of
desktops by ZT Affinity computers. Does anyone here have any experience
with these machines? You can answer off line if you wish. Thank you.

Re: [Elecraft] [Bulk] [K2] Loose screws on KPA100 Q1 and Q2

2011-03-01 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Bill,

Good information on your blog. For additional information on setting
the K2 filters and the dial calibration, I refer you to the K2 Dial
Calibration article on my website. Yes, once set the K2 filters will
stay put. There is no need for continual filter changes unless the K2
owner is simply experimenting to see what works best for him/her. See
the K2 Dial Calibration article on my website www.w3fpr.com for more
information on how to accomplish the optimum filter settings for your K2.

My recommended RTTY filter set settings are - FL1 = The same as the SSB
FL1 settings - that gives you the full waterfall display - FL2 = 1.00,
FL3 = 0.70, and FL4 = 0.40.  Those narrow filters are centered at 1000
Hz (change the KDSP2 RTTY filter centers to match), and set the MMTTY
mark frequency to 910 Hz. When tuning PSK31 signals in the midst of
QRM, use the VFO knob to tune the desired signal to the vicinity of 1000
Hz on the waterfall, and then if you need to narrow the IF filters to
alleviate QRM, it is a simple matter of tapping the XFIL button.

Note that there may be a slight difference in the BFO frequency (up to
20 Hz) when switching IF filter widths. To maintain a QSO and keep the
QSO on the same frequency, unlock the transmit and receive frequencies
in the data mode application when using these techniques, and you will
avoid chasing the QSO frequency up or down the band.

Every time I have the K2 open, and the KPA100 shield off, I check this. I've
only found them loose the first time, and I've had the KPA100 board off the
heat sink a couple of times.

Ribbon cable position makes a difference, I found. However, once set, the
filters seem to stay put. Here's my tips on setting up and aligning the filters:

Swap ends! What a concept! Of course, that made a huge difference
in routing the cable directly and _easily_ straight toward the front.

I've been fighting with that ribbon cable from day 1 ... thanks for the

  Ken,

While that is a good idea, I have never found it to be necessary. I
check on all the K2/100s that I repair.
Once the pads have "settled in", they do not compress any further.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Loose screws on KPA100 Q1 and Q2

2011-03-01 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Bruce,

Yes that is a good reminder - also note that it should be re-done if you
change the thermal pads.
For anyone who has had a KPA100 built for them, it might be a bit
intimidating at first to get to the screws. For anyone in that
position, send me an email, and I will send you the document that I
normally send to customers for whom I build a KPA100 or change the
thermal pads.

Route the ribbon cable (and the speaker cable) toward the front. It
should exit the shield running straight out. If it does not fit that
way, swap ends.

When the KPA100 is mounted onto the base K2, tuck the ribbon cable and
the speaker cable up into the space above the Control Board and as far
away from the KSB2 as possible and reasonable.

[Elecraft] USB to Serial adapter

2011-03-01 Thread Richard Fjeld
FYI,
I have a K3 without the KUSB option installed. I have a cheap USB to Serial
adapter that I need for my PC that doesn't have a serial port.

I got curious about using PSK-31 with a waterfall display, so I used the
adapter between the PC and the K3. Using HRD Beta version 5, I had Tx/Rx
control problems intermittently with the best configuration I could find. From
what I had read, I was convinced that the adapter did not have the FTDI chipset
and was causing the trouble. I planned on buying a better adapter.

Later, I happened to try DigiPan software. It works flawlessly with the cheap
adapter. The configuration I am using in DigiPan caused the K3 transmit to
flutter when using HRD. I'm glad to have discovered this.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Kit Questions

2011-03-01 Thread K1FFX
I can share my recent experience in the ARRL CW DX contest.

I have a K2/100 with no additional filtering (i.e., no KAF2 or KDSP2). I
had
the variable bandwidth crystal filter set to 1000 Hz, 500 Hz, 300 Hz, and
150 Hz.
I ran most of the contest set to 150 Hz.

There were a few times when I felt like additional filtering would have been
a "nice to have". There were no times when I felt like it was a "gotta
have".

And that was also my experience in the CQ WW last November (running 10
watts pre-KPA100!).

I'm probably going to build the AF1 external audio filter later this year.
I'm
sure it will be handy, but I'd do it mostly for the pleasure of building
another
mini-module!

WinATT by GM4PMK is a nice little Windows program that designs Pi and T
attenuators in a snap. As well as calculating theoretical values for the
attenuation you require, it also finds the closest standard resistor
values in the E6, E12 or E24 series and calculates the attenuation and
VSWR for those values too.

The 64KB stand-alone exe file is at:

Or alternatively, the DXE preamp manual outlines a number of simple mods to
reduce gain.

Are you also using the DX Engineering preamp? It's got a lot of gain,
more than is needed to bring your Beverages up to match other antennas,
and that could be contributing to a high signal level from your TX
signal. Consider putting a simple passive attenuator between the
preamp and the K3. You can build the attenuator from a few resistors.
Another name for such an attenuator is "pad." I suspect that there are
some formulas in the ARRL Handbook to calculate the resistor values.

Just working off the top of my head, I'd start with a 68 ohm resistor in
parallel with the line at the input of the pad, a series resistor of
about 270 ohms, and a second 68 ohm resistor in parallel at the output
of the pad. This will be good for something on the order of 14 dB, and
will be close enough to a decent match for either 50 ohm or 75 ohm coax.
In this application, that's plenty close enough. If you want more
attenuation, increase the 270 ohm to 560 or 680 ohms, which will get you
a bit more than 20 dB.

Thanks to those who responded to my post regarding power-off loss of
stored hold function on FN7 with v1.05 P3 firmware. A parametric
reset solved the problem. For the record, the event occurred when
powering off from the P3 alone or by using the K3.

Oh, but be careful with gender changers because with serial
connections, because not all serial cables are created equal; often, a
double-female-ended cable will be a null modem cable (with RX/TX wires
crossed), but not always. You can test your cable with a continuity
tester to make sure that the pins on each end are all the same pin.
The K3 needs a standard cable, not a null modem cable. See
http://www.lammertbies.nl/comm/cable/RS-232.html for more info.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Kit Questions

2011-03-01 Thread Curt Milton
Phil

Others opinions may vary, but here is my experience - a K2 works well without
DSP.

Yes you already likely heard a base K2 is all analog.  But note that is has
this
feature - the xtal filter bandwidth is programmable.  I literally have mine set
up for 700, 400, 250 and 100 Hz bandwidth.  After getting these selectable
filters well centered - it acts a lot like using a DSP filter - and I find it
provides enough settings for CW.  The filter shapes are not quite as sharp as
DSP, but still pretty good.  Also with no DSP, the audio is pleasant to listen
to.  In my opinion, the rig works great with no DSP.

I also have the SSB filters set to vary from 1.6 kHz upward.  They also work
pretty well.  Here a DSP filter could help with adjacent frequency interference
by being sharper.

If you are planning on all CW, or even mostly CW, I suggest you can do well
without the DSP.  For many years my K2 was only equipped with 160m and SSB
options.

I do use a NESCAF external audio filter for pulling weak signals out on 160 and
80m.  It has a potentiometer for BW adjustment - which you might prefer over
the
internal fixed settings.

But I have this feeling you might be thrilled enough with using your K3 at QRP
levels, so you'll have to weigh do you really need this other rig in the shack,
or for travel when you have a KX1.  You could diversify your 'build' portfolio
by doing something homebrew and/or another QRP project (hint check Az Scorpions
and FourState for ideas).

73 Curt

Gang, So, I am thinking that another kit is in my future. I have a K3 and a
KX1 and I am thinking about the K2. I would be using it for CW and QRP or
2*QRP
only. So, I wouldn't plan on getting the SSB option and I am not planning on
the 100 watt PA or the ATU. But, I do have questions about filters (remember,
CW usage only). 1. Question: is the radio a completely analog radio (no DSP)
if you DO NOT buy the DSP filter option? 2. Question: is the DSP filter
worth
the money? 3. Question: is the Audio filter useful? Is the Audio filter
still useful if I buy the DSP filter? Any other comments and suggestions are
definitely accepted. 73, phil, K7PEH

Re: [Elecraft] K3 serial to serial

2011-03-01 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
I'm not so sure... My FT-1000 MP Cat connection has a male DB9 connection,
and the K3 has a female connection. If the MP's convention is "standard" for
Yaesu rigs, then the FT2000 cord will not work. Serial cord connections on
PC's are male. The K3 requires a cord with male on one end and female on the
other. The MP requires a double female cord. That fact made all the cords
I had used with my MP directly unusable with the K3.

If the FT2000 CAT connection on the back of the rig has pins, the cord will
not work for the K3 as is. An inexpensive male serial gender changer on the
rig end will convert a double female.

I found the gender changers inconvenient with cord replacement (K3 travels a
bit with me), and eventually bought new cords.

73, Guy.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Current Meter

2011-03-01 Thread Scott Ellington
The measurement is quite accurate, and the ADC reference is OK. Sorry I didn't
point that out originally. I did get some data from Gary, which shows that his
K3 current meter is much more accurate than mine.

The meter accuracy itself isn't really important, but the error may be limiting
output power, as the High Current error occurs at a lower current than intended.

[Elecraft] AM TX tune up procedure for the K3 ?

2011-03-01 Thread Jack Brabham
I think I have seen this some where but can't seem to locate it now, and
I can't seem to make the archive search distinguish between "AM" and
"am" so I need some help.

I'm looking for the K3 TX setup procedure for AM and would appreciate
any recommendations regarding menu or control settings for AM.

Thanks,

[Elecraft] tx/rx isolation and safe tx input power for K3

2011-03-01 Thread pendulous
Good morning. I have a K3 with a P3 and all the fixins. I have had the radio
since before Christmas. Love it. Great product and great company. I recently
installed the DX engineering bidirectional Beverage systems. I have been
using them in conjunction with the K3 and a Hustler 6BTV and a couple of
Dipoles-seperate TX and RX. SeemS to work well. I have a question concerning
the minimum safe TX RX antenna separation to protect the front end of the
K3. I have not heard the COR kick in, at least I don't think so. Anyway, the
separation between the TX antennas and the beverages ranges anywhere from 50
feet to 90 feet, with the Beverages for the most part broadside to the TX
antennas. Transmit power is never more than 800 watts on CW. Is this a safe
distance for 160 to 20 meters? Is there a formula or model that allows one
to easily calculate the required isolation in terms of distance? Thanks in
advance for your help.

[Elecraft] K3 serial cable to PC

2011-03-01 Thread Adriano
Hello Elecrafters

After a 10 days trip i turned on my K3 and it was "blocked". No buttons
working, no rx, nothing. Only the displays were working, on the lcd the msg:
VOX=OFF and a continuous beep.
So after a few turn on/off i decided go to EEINT (reset the radio).
Well after that i opened the K3 utility to start the configs again. It was also
not working. I tested the port and it was ok but the attempts to connect w/ the
radio failed. Not even the msg "new hardware found" came up. I was using the
KUSB cable (FTDI).
I decided to try another cable (PROLIFIC) after delete all old drivers and
install it again.. It did recognize the new driver but still no conection w/
the radio.

Any clue of what is going on here? Anyone had the same trouble?

Any way to test if the radio is damaged ?

Everything was turned off and disconected during my trip.

Tnx in advance.
