I can mirror your statements.

Over here in Pennsylvania, we've been seeing the same occurrence of rather
rare Asian DX popping up. I'm a regular member up at K3MJW, the Skyview
Radio Society (http://www.skyviewradio.net).

Over the past two weeks, we've heard the following countries between 20 and
15 meters (mostly 20):

China
Hong Kong
Asiatic Russia
South Korea
Vietnam
Cambodia
India
Bangladesh
Mauritius
Madagascar
Lots of Australia
New Zealand
United Arab Emirates (2 stations)
Qatar
Kuwait (S9+40dB)
Galapagos
The Falklands
Egypt
Libya (not sure if this was a pirate or not HI HI)
Taiwan

And lots of other 'local' stuff.

The bands have really been shaping up lately. I can't wait to see if we get
some decent 10 and 6 meter openings mid-summer (Field Day possibly??). Time
to work some DX mobile on 6.

[Elecraft] P3 Manual Updates

2011-04-17 Thread Bill Henderson
Hi

I received my P3 on Friday. Almost before the postie managed to wrestle the
cheque from my hand, I had it built. I am delighted with it. If I was having
any more fun I would be arrested.

GRUMPY MODE ON

Why on earth did it come with a manual and a list of errata that is supposed
to be cut and pasted to bring the manual up to date? Surely, it wouldn’t
have been much more time consuming for you to have made the changes to the
manual itself. The changes all referred to the opperating part of the
manual and none to the assembly part. 8 pages of revision in a 27 page
document is way too much.

GRUMPY MODE OFF

I still think that it's a great piece of kit.

[Elecraft] K3 loss of output power

2011-04-17 Thread Mike Clarke
Hi all,

My K3 has recently developed a fault that causes a sudden loss of
output power. I can be happily transmitting, then suddenly I
hear what sounds like a relay click. The rig remains in TX mode,
but the RF power meter drops down to nothing.

Turning the rig off and back on again fixes the problem for a
short period, before it happens again. My suspicion is that
something is causing the KPA100 to trip out; the rig has spent
quite a bit of time being bounced around in planes of late, so my
first thought was that one of the boards might have been bounced
loose.

Before I take the whole thing to pieces though, has anyone else
experienced a similar fault?

Thanks and 73,

Cost.

They keep costs down by printing in bulk and only revising when (I
assume) stocks are low.

I'm happy Elecraft provides a printed manual at all. Many products I
buy these days either have the manual on a CD or expect me to download
it. Getting a high-quality printed manual is very rare.

OK, your solder station is a new OEM model from Circuit Specialists, that has
been recently introduced.

It is a micro-processor controlled station (temperature controlled) .. at an
attractive price.

Does it use the same soldering tips as the Hakko 907 pencil ??

I am aware of Circuit Specialists in Arizona.

They have previously have sold OEM product manufactured in Eastern Asia
(Solomon in Taiwan, Aoyue, others),

based on Hakko 926 / 936 designs from Japan.

Earlier OEM models (no longer offered) were direct copies of Hakko -- which
prompted litigation against those firms

(China has been slow in protecting or respecting patents, copyrights, etc.)

Your soldering iron pencil / iron is modeled after the Hakko 907 iron (ceramic
heater) and used by many Eastern mfg.

This ceramic heater design perfected by the Japanese (heavy gov't RD for auto

When I take off the tip and expose the element, it's glowing a dull

goes back to dull orange.  That's the only direct evidence I have that
it is temperature controlled.  It's no Cadillac, and reprogramming the
presets is maddening, but it seems to work.  At least, I'm making
acceptable joints with it.  No cold joints, most joints have the proper
concave filet (a few might be just a wee bit convex, but no big balls of
solder in any case), and full coverage of the pad.  I've got that one
to three second temperature dialed in.

Bill - If Elecraft had printed off 1000 copies of the manual, it would
have been a waste of paper and the rain forest for the manuals to have
been pulped and new ones printed when a couple of sheets of updates
could be produced instead. OTOH, a new manual could be produced and the
price of the P3 could be increased accordingly - I think not.

If anyone is able to assemble a P3, surely it's not beyond their
capability to make the appropriate changes to the manual.

What you're complaining about is one of Elecraft's greatest strengths.
When Yaecomwood upgrades a product, it gets a new model number, and if
you already own the older one, you have to buy the new one and sell the
old (at a loss, of course) to get the improvements.

Elecraft has done it very differently -- they have designed a radio that
is both modular and utilizes DSP extensively in a manner that allows
major upgrades simply by rewriting firmware that programs the DSP, that
we download and install. Those improvements, mostly new features and
more flexible use of controls, must be described in the manual
operationally, hence the revisions. All that is free to users, but it
certainly isn't free for Elecraft. And occasionally upgrades are made
to the hardware, some of which can be purchased by owners.

Like you, I consider the errata to be a huge PITA -- what is needed is a
manual that is continuously updated and downloadable with all the
changes integrated in a logical stream. That happens periodically with
Elecraft manuals -- I downloaded a new K3 manual a year or two ago then
printed out pages with significant changes and stuck them between pages
in the manual that had come with the radio.

I haven't taken the time to see if a new P3 manual is available, but
firmware for the P3 is still evolving, with VERY useful features being
added as they are suggested by users and can be implemented.

Re: [Elecraft] Manual Updates

2011-04-17 Thread John Ragle
Dear list:

It seems to me that these days the whole idea of a printed manual
is somewhat beyond the pale.

Elecraft makes these manuals the corresponding errata available
in *.pdf form for anyone to download, and we should be thankful that we
have access to these files. They were doubtless composed upon a word
processor capable of saving (publishing) in *.pdf format, and it is a
considerable additional expense for Elecraft to distribute these
documents in tree-consuming form.

While the original files are not editable in Acrobat, *.pdf file
editors are available for free or for nominal cost on the internet, so
one can edit the errata directly into the manual without difficulty.

This is the way I have managed the errata sheets, but for obvious
reasons I have either used a separate color or an ancillary notation to
indicate that the additions were made by me upon the original Elecraft
document for my own consumption. The editing software insists on
changing the name of the file as well, so that anyone can see that it
was not the original.

[Elecraft] K2 Ladder Line Run for Dipole

2011-04-17 Thread Paul Agoglia
Hi: I have completed assembly of my K2 TX serial 7059, an elecraft balun, the
K2 SSB adaptor, 100 W adaptor and elecraft KAT 100 antenna tuner. I also just
raised an 80 meter dipole in my yard. I have several hundred feet of ladder
line attached to the dipole. I ran some of this ladder line toward my house,
with its first stop being attached to our shed. From there it goes underneath
a deck that has very little crawl space. It runs 16 feet from one end of the
deck to the other. On this other end of the deck, I will need to run it
against the house anaother 16 feet, turn a corner and run about 20 feet to a
point where it will come into the house.

I am taking my information on how to make a spark arrestor from the web site
www.athensarc.org/ladder.asp
It seems to me the best place to put a ground rod and spark arrestor would be
out near the shed, right below the dipole feedpoint. The reason I am thinking
so, is that if lightning does strike, it would enter the ground out there, away
from the house. If I put the spark arrestor and ground rod near the entry
point to the house, then lightning would travel under my deck, onto my house
siding and then enter the spark arrestor and ground rod only after running
half the perimeter of my house across my nice Canadian cedar siding.

So my question is, where would the best place be for the ground rod and
lightning arrestor. At the entry point to the house, or out beneath the dipole
center feedpoint?

Paul,

This subject has been beat to death here in recent weeks, and not to
start it up again, but in the interest of safety: The ground rod, where
ever you put it, must be tied to the ground at your service entrance
with a very low resistance conductor.

The reason is that, in the event of a nearby strike that induces charge
in your antenna system, you want it, your radio chassis, the mains
safety ground, and everything else to be at the same potential. That
can only happen if the grounds for everything are tied back to the
single ground at the service entrance.

It really is a safety issue. Now, unfortunately, if your antenna takes
a direct strike, you're pretty much hosed.

What you're complaining about is one of Elecraft's greatest
 strengths.
When Yaecomwood upgrades a product, it gets a new model number, and
 if
you already own the older one, you have to buy the new one and sell
 the
old (at a loss, of course) to get the improvements.

[Elecraft] K3_P3_160_CW

2011-04-17 Thread Ken Roberson
Wayne,

While working 160M DX last winter I noticed that when I
Switch from RX antenna (Beverage) and back to TX antenna
That the base line (Noise floor) on the P3 was about 2 S unites
Less than when I changes to the RX antenna.

With the default antenna ( TX antenna ) PreAmp = off and ATT = ON
Switch to RX antenna (with the preamp off) turn the preamp on and switch back
to normal antenna.
Now if you switch the preamp on and off, the base line will return to normal.
Hard for me to explain.

Thanks Ken K5DNL

Re: [Elecraft] Multi-band (Fan) Dipoles

2011-04-17 Thread Niel Skousen
On a similar vein... I've seen in the past an antenna that used to be a
common 'emergency' antenna. I cant remember the name or dimensions, so
hopefully someone can understand my description and point me to additional
information.

The mult-band antenna is similar to a 3 wire fan dipole, but the elements are
generally paralleled (not 'fanned out).
A dumb ascii art diagram follows with the feedpoint (a), only half of the
symmetrical antenna is shown
- The middle element is approximately the length of the dipole,
- one of the outside elements is only about 70% of the full length,
- the last and longest element is folded around the end of the middle wire
with a gap (b) between the end of the short wire and the long wire.
(generally the guy wire is attached at the fold point (c)

I noticed it too, and found that using AutoNotch reduced it enough to
hear some weak stations through it.

[Elecraft] View message in context

2011-04-17 Thread N3XX
I see these emails from the Elecraft list quite often, someone responding to
another person's earlier post, but no text quoted from the earlier message.
There is just the View this message in context text as shown below. I
don't care to open another page to see what the previous message was about,
so usually just delete these messages. I have checked my subscription
options on http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft , but see no way
to change this. Is there a way to change options to actually see the
previous message without going somewhere else to look at it? I went to
nabble.com, but couldn't find Elecraft or any way to make any changes there.

Thanks --- 73,
Tim - N3XX

Re: [Elecraft] K3_P3_160_CW

2011-04-17 Thread Alan Bloom
The P3 keeps track of the preamp/attenuator status reported by the K3 so
that the dBm or S-unit display reads accurately. That can lead to some
non-intuitive behavior. For example, turning on the K3 preamp typically
makes the noise level on the P3 go down rather than up. The reason is
that the P3 is turning down its gain to compensate for the increased
gain in the K3.

However this doesn't always work correctly when switching the RX antenna
on the K3. Currently the K3 does not send an update to the P3 if
switching antennas causes the preamp or attenuator status to change.
This is on Wayne's bug list.
