Re: [Elecraft] K2 Control Cable Question - Recap

2011-04-30 Thread Tony Estep
Jim, you might try a virtual serial port program called Com0com. It is open
source and free. I have installed it and tried to get it to work, but
haven't fooled with it long enough to give it a full critique. It does
install and it does create pairs of virtual serial ports. The ports do
appear in the port list of your software. That's all I can attest. I tried
briefly to send data out of one of the virtual ports and receive it on the
other, but it didn't work the first try, and I got distracted by a different
problem and never tried again.

Anyway, it's worth a try. Others report success with it. Plenty of info at:

http://com0com.sourceforge.net/

Good luck,
Tony KT0NY

[Elecraft] K2 Control Cable Question - Recap

2011-04-30 Thread Jim Campbell
A while back I asked a question about physically splitting the K2 serial
control cable so that I could have one half of the cable talk to CW
Skimmer and the other half talk to MixW. I got some good suggestions for
which I am thankful.

First it was suggested that I do an internet search for "virtual serial
port". I did so and found a number of solutions that led back to
www.eltima.com. A single license for that solution was almost $100. That
was quite a bit too pricey for me, so I searched further.

That led to my finding www.enterlogic.com. This appears to be a group of
Russian programmers. A single license for their solution is about $25.
This is still a little pricey but much better than eltima so I went for it.

Their solution is called a Virtual Serial Port Emulator. It has several
capabilities one of which is the virtual splitting of a serial port. The
input to the VSPE is the actual com port, in my case Com 4. The output
of the VSPE is a virtual port, in which case I specified Com 1 (which is
not an actual port on my computer).

In CW Skimmer, View>Settings>CAT tab, I specified Radio 1 and in its'
Settings I pointed to Com 1 and gave the com port the settings expected
by the K2's serial port.

In MixW3, Configure>TRCVR CAT/PTT I once again pointed to Com 1.

The results were disappointing. CW Skimmer worked OK, showing the
frequency correctly. The frequency display in MixW was random numbers,
changing frequently. Not at all what I desired.

I then switched to N1MM Logger. Configuring Com 1 as a radio type
"Elecraft K2" and giving com 1 the settings expected by the K2, N1MM
Logger showed the correct frequency.

So it is possible to have the K2 drive more than one program
simultaneously. I will try working with the Russian programmers to get
VSPE to talk to MixW.

Thanks again for all the help.

72,

Jim - W4BQP

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2011-04-30 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
I hope your weather is warmer than mine. A few more days of snow this
week was not pleasant. An inch on the ground one day with a little more
the next. Supposedly spring is at hand but only a few signs of it are
showing. Flowers are very confused. I have trilliums blooming before
daffodils and lower down there is a flowering dogwood getting started.
There is a grouse drumming very close to the house. Each time I walk
outside I hear him. I don't think I can sneak up on him because he is in
a large open bowl. The sound of my creeping up on him would be so
magnified I would not even get a glimpse of him.

Propagation was good the few times I got on this week. Today the
balloon was an easy signal to copy for most of its flight. Only the lower
elevations were not easily heard here in Oregon. A solar stream hit the
earth early today causing a few aurora. Hopefully this will have calmed
down by tomorrow while activating the ionosphere. We shall see if the
East and Southeast are heard once again. Luckily there are no major
holidays this weekend. That will help.

If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net
please email me. I will turn the net over to you for a few minutes so you
can call areas in my skip zone. It sure would prove helpful to those I
cannot reach directly.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

I asked this question i *think* 2 weeks ago, got no response.

@Elecraft (Eric/Wayne/Alan etc.):

Can we just have confirmation that this IS still on the roadmap? If
not, that's okay too, I just want to know either way. Perhaps

Yes bias is on same as the head set.
Could it be a cable issue?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 synthesizer spur?

2011-04-30 Thread ab2tc
Hi,

I have them both although the exact frequencies differ a little bit. They
are both very weak and the one on 20m is inaudible with a real antenna
connected. BTW these are by no means the only internal birdies of this
nature on the K3. I'll start worrying about them when I have gotten rid of
my last computer (and other electronic devices) birdie.

[Elecraft] SSB net announcement - note frequency change

2011-04-30 Thread Phillip Shepard
I got a handful of replies about the SSB net frequency. They ranged from
those that say they can't check in due to noise on 14.316 to those that
routinely check in and say don't change it. I'm willing to try a different
frequency. I have been monitoring the band around 14.305 (suggested as an
alternative earlier this week). There is the Ohani net on 14.307 that ends
between 1800 and 1830Z. There is a maritime net that is on 14.300. So,
let's give it a try tomorrow at 1800Z on 14.3035 MHz (half way between these
two nets). If it is a disaster around there, we may have to go back to
14.316.

So: 14.3035 MHz at 1800Z tomorrow (Sunday, 5/1/11)

I will be net control from Oregon. See you there.

[Elecraft] Heil IC mic

2011-04-30 Thread don Swetzig
I just hooked a hand held Heil with the IC element I just purchased.  I
got this one as I liked the performance of the Heil headseat with this element
that I purchased with the rig from Elecraft.

Now after getting it connected it seems like a dead mic compared to the
headseat.   I have cranked up the gain from low to high and I still need
the mic line in setting at 45.  The original head set needed low gain and
the line in set to 10 for full ALC action.

Also the power meeter on the tuner shows lower power with this mic.

Am I missing something with the handheld setup as I really liked the
performance of the IC in the proset

Yes...absolutely possible and in fact probable since your computer was taken
out. Lightning > cable > computer > KIO3. This has been an ongoing problem
with U1 on the KIO3 Main board and Eric has promised a mod to fix it but I
haven't yet seen it appear. Here's how to check U1:

http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2011-April/148361.html

If U1 measures bad, you likely need a new KIO3 Main board since U1 has
finely spaced pins.

73, Bill

P.S. Now I disconnect all RS-232 or USB ports in addition to all antennas
and power. The last time this happened to me the problem was apparently
induced by EM fields from a nearby strike.--

Just to put another view about about the royals and without going into
detail on moral and historical issues, not everyone in the UK currently
shares Adi's sentiments. Probably not the hundreds of thousands who turned
out to watch the wedding in person or the millions who watched on TV in the
UK and that's without mentioning billions worldwide - even though it may
well have been of more interest to YLs and XYLs hi. What was noticeable here
was the happy atmosphere and the large number of young people out on the
streets to see and celebrate the occasion. If we could get the same number
of young people enthused about amateur radio it would be great!

Maybe the last word could go to a headline in today's UK "Financial Times" :
"A near perfect day as globe tunes in to see Britain at its battiest - and
best"

In case "battiest" doesn't transatlanticise it means "most eccentric" or
"craziest" :-)

Re: [Elecraft] ERR IO3 AGAIN

2011-04-30 Thread John Ragle
In my experience, a wide variety of things is possible. For example,
last summer (2010) I lost one channel of my router (out of 4 in use) to
a lightning strike, and my wife lost her entire computer (fried MoBo) to
the same strike, even though she was unplugged from the mains...she was
plugged into a CAT6 line from the router, but NOT the same channel that
fried.

The weird (interesting?) aspect to this is that the cable TV run that
serves us is fiber optic up to the street entrance. This implicates the
coax line from the street entrance to the house (buried at least 1'
underground) and the house wiring itself.

During this event, my computer was plugged into a plug strip and into
the same router, but was turned 'off,' and a dozen or so pieces of ham
gear were plugged into antennas and mains ('off' again), not one of
which was damaged.

This particular strike was perhaps 150 yards away at the end of the
street. My tower is grounded through two No. 4 cables and 8 foot ground
rods.

As has been stressed on this list server, the effects of a near strike
can be quite quixotic. I once got a good jolt (actually more of a
strong 'tingle') when leaning against the metal frame of my garage door
and a strike occurred across the street.

Faraday's Law holds, but where? The equivalent circuits are not always
obvious...time for more tinfoil hats...read the archives.

Re: [Elecraft] ERR IO3 AGAIN

2011-04-30 Thread Jim McDonald
Besides other grounding and lightning protection, which have been covered
very thoroughly here several times, I have a last line of protection on the
RS-232 input to the K3. It's manufactured by (for?) Tripp-Lite and sold as
a model DB9.

I'm not suggesting that it replaces any other lightning or surge protection,
but for $15 or so, it made me feel better. Amazon sells them (what a
surprise!):
http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-DB9-Protector-Suppressor/dp/B6B81G/ref=
sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304176459&sr=8-1

or http://tinyurl.com/3d882eq .

I also have them on my SteppIR controller, HAL DXP38, and Green Heron
controller too.

Some will probably say they are a waste of money, assuming you have a good
protection system, but at $15 each, redundancy made sense to me.

[Elecraft] K3 synthesizer spur?

2011-04-30 Thread Robert Redmon
I have recently noticed an unusual spur on 20 meter ssb (enters the
passband at about 187.3 and exits at about 187.4). It is apparently a
synthesizer spur as it tracks with vfo knob movement except in the
opposite direction and in steps x10 the tuning increment. Have a similar
spur on 50 mhz (about 50.094). Anyone else noticed this and/or
discovered a fix? It jumps about 50khz down when I change the mode from
usb to lsb on 50mhz.

That much quoted figure of 2 Billion watching it on the TV is clearly
WAY WAY too much when you consider there are only 6 Billion people on
the whole planet. Clearly loads did watch it, but nothing like that
number. It didn't include me for instance, who was content with five

This has little, or probably nothing, to do with the UK Elecraft Net,

Re: [Elecraft] UK SSB Elecraft Net

2011-04-30 Thread Geoffrey Downs

"A near perfect day as globe tunes in to see Britain at its battiest - and
best"

In case "battiest" doesn't transatlanticise it means "most eccentric" or
"craziest" :-)

[Elecraft] ERR IO3 more!!

2011-04-30 Thread Robert 'RC' Conley
Here is all that I found:
I lost my computer Tues night through the Comcast cable link.
When installing the K3 Utility in the new computer I found that it is not
commuicating with the K3.
I have ERR IO3 on K3 3212 on power up.
The N1MM contest logger does not communicate with the K3 either.
I surmise that the KIO3 is damaged
Just contacted a station in OHIO and the K3 seems to be preforming properly.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Hi-Fi audio amplifier kit

2011-04-30 Thread Thomas Horsten
A low-pass filter on the output works well, and is easy to construct if the
power is reasonable! A 3-pole Chebyshev filter works well.

In the datasheets for these amplifiers there's usually a recommendation to
do as much unless the cable to the speaker is very short (ie. built into the
unit).

Re: [Elecraft] UK SSB Elecraft Net

2011-04-30 Thread Adi Andrei
I agree with you on the the fact that there are nice traditions outthere, kept
on going by true enthusiasm (rather than public money) such as Amateur Radio,
and I wish there were more like it based on cooperation and unconditional help
between people. We might have to rediscover or create them, because we are
going to need them.

But you must be joking about the royals.

Many countries (including USA) had to fight bloody battles to get their
independence (more or less successfully) from this family.
Plus there hasn't been a British king in England since the battle of Hastings,
and William the conqueror took over.
They didn't even speak English at the court for hundreds of years after that.
This is a tradition of classism and enslavement of the many (World level) for
the benefit of the few.

We need to discriminate between traditions.
Amateur Radio is 'noble' in a very much opposite way to royalty and empire
building.
