Re: [Elecraft] Portable Wire Antenna Weight
FWIW my favourite method to place a line in a tree makes use of a strong but light fibreglass pole almost 10m in length, through which runs a drop line. It does takes longer to place a line than when using a missile system, about an hour to place a line at 100ft in a tall pine exactly where one wants it so not very useful when operating portable. Because a tree's branches are used as hoist points for the pole on the way up, the pole must not weigh too much when placing a line in a tall pine, whose lower branches have long gone leaving short branch stumps. 73, Geoff GM4ESD __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I have reported the same to Al. The problem can be reproduced simply be switching from tracking mode to fixed mode when the VFO A frequency is not on an exact multiple of 5/10/25/50 KHz (depending on the display width). The display offset also appears occasionally when moving to a new band using direct frequency entry from the K3 front panel. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] Portable Wire Antenna Weight
I use a similar system (10 ft rod, 20# test line) with a tennis ball filled with 23 US pennies. The tennis ball works great, and does not annoy neighbors when used at home. I use a snap swivel on the end of the line. I cut a slice in the tennis ball to insert the pennies. A sail needle was used to sew up the slice and to create a loop. The snap swivel clips to the loop to toss the ball. When the ball reaches ground, I change the ball for a light line, and pull it through the tree. I then use the light line to pull the antenna, or pull a heavier rope if needed. My trees top out at about 70 feet. Re: [Elecraft] Portable Wire Antenna Weight
I use a arborists throwing bag and slickline. All fits in a small bag a bit larger than a softball. With a little (very little) practice I can easily put a line up 50ft or more. The slickline is fine to haul up a temporary antenna as well like an end fed so no additional messenger line required. Much more compact that a fishing rods etc for mobile use. I use the same setup to haul up heavier ropes with a survival saw to remove limbs that grow out near my home dipole. Works great for trimming limbs much higher than my pole saw can reach. Re: [Elecraft] Portable Wire Antenna Weight
I use various methods to get a sinker over a tree limb, and have been successful at heights over 100 feet -- but rarely on the first try! I have found that trying to pull the weight back directly, invariable results in a pair of unintended half hitches around a limb high up in the tree. No matter what, I force myself to unhook the weight and pull back just the line. I make this easy by using a small safety pin looking clip, not sure what a fisherman calls it, but available from fishing tackle stores, to attach and remove the line. I also paint the sinkers bright red, and use fluorescent colored line to aid finding the end in the bush. No broken feet (or line) yet! Re: [Elecraft] K2 Front Panel assembly question
Thanks Don, I installed the LCD last night and I used the remaining spacers (that I hadn't lost) and stacked on top of one of them the spacer used for the switches (so that the larger switch spacer would clear the cut off leads. It looks good to me, flat, level, and no visible gap, when held up to a bright light, between the LED panel and the LCD panel. While it is convenient to have the proper spacers that fit over the leads of the backlight assembly, that is not necessary. Find two pieces the thickness of the PC board material used by Elecraft - the switch spacing tool is one thickness - find something (anything, even popsicle sticks or matchsticks!) that matches it. Use that to hold the backlight assembly above the front panel board while you solder the leads on one end of the backlight assembly, then move the same stack to the other end and solder those leads - job done, remove the spacing tool and proceed with the assembly. Do be careful to obtain the correct size for whatever spacing tool you improvise. If the backlight assembly is not spaced the correct distance from the board, then the LCD will not fit correctly, and you may have interference problems when you attach the front panel metalwork. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/16/2011 11:47 PM, R Thompson wrote: While assembling my new K2, I've lost some of the LED backlight spacers that are broken off of the Spacer Set PC board. Re: [Elecraft] AGC Problem
Just to note firmly that this is not a problem with the K3. Radio firmware cannot be expected to provide workarounds for any and all programming mistakes in third party software. I have noted over the years that some firms, usually small software suppliers, can be very stubborn in not dealing with issues, for any number of reasons, varying all the way from just plain meanness to declining health to family situations, and sometimes will spend great energy in refusing to do anything about problems having to do with another company that has become a peeve with them, for whatever reason. Since there are NO standards for programming of this sort it will remain a jungle, and very much subject to personalities. We have to make sure that we do not misplace the source of the trouble, and dump our complaints on the innocent party just because they may be more available or visible. HRD has a problem on this one. It will not do to say that K3 should be immune. The conversation should move to HRD's venue. I for one do NOT want to see peripheral software bugs being worked around in K3 firmware. Uses up space in firmware, run time, programmer time that I would rather see spent on things that MUST be done in K3 firmware, if at all. Wayne is a finite resource. Spend it very well. 73, Guy. [Elecraft] Managing Multiple Keys/Paddles More Easily
I have multiple radios and every one of them has the key/paddle jack on the rear apron. Because I built a custom 'cubby' for my station it's become annoying to change keys/paddles. I have to reach behind or around the radios and feel for the right place, or move the radio. Once again, I know I'm not a genius and many others have undoubtedly done this exact same thing I'm sure -- but I've never seen it written up or described so I thought I'd offer it here for those listers beset with a similar annoyance. Re: [Elecraft] Does the KPA500 put out 500 watts in all modes?
Yes. 500W peak power. In SSB, this would be PEP. In CW, it is key down. In RTTY, it is 500W. In AM it is 125W carrier assuming modulation is limited to 100% positive, etc. This is not to say you can send a 30 minute continuous brag tape in RTTY, of course. Re: [Elecraft] Does the KPA500 put out 500 watts in all modes?
In the KPA500 manual the duty cycle is indicated as 10 minutes on, 5 minutes off at 500 watts output. This could be RTTY, FM, Olivia 500/8, ... This is limited by the ability of the amplifier to get rid of the heat created by the transistors. That's why I indicated it is a thermal issue. Re: [Elecraft] Digital software compatibility
Chuck, Yes, the computer is just another tool that one can connect to the K3, but it can be a very powerful tool. For Data Modes, applications like Fldigi, HRD/DM780. MixW, and many others can open a whole new path to communications. The there are the Joe Taylor applications for weak signal work. The world of ham radio has expanded tremendously beyond the basics of AM, SSB and CW. There is a whole new world out there to be explored. Yes, I know there are some that want to stick with the old tried and true methods of communication, but that stance reminds me of the AM vs. Mickey Mouse Talk back in the early days of SSB. Let progress arise and take advantage of whatever technology may offer. It is not often that we can detect signals that are buried under the band noise level, the that is exactly what the JT modes offer - certainly they are not for slam-bang QSOs, but they do add a lot to what can be accomplished with ham radio. Let the naysayers begin their CW is the only mode tirades - CW is the original Data Mode, but those later data modes can be very effective as well - even if they need a supporting computer for decoding. Congratulations to those who can easily do CW in their heads and pump brass with a straight key or bug or paddles - no computer required. But to insist that is the only real data mode is just not logical to me. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/19/2011 7:33 PM, Chuck Shefflette wrote: For me the computer is just another tool that happens to connect to the radio... __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Ian, If your interest is mainly for digital modes, you might want to look at Fldigi along with Hamlib. If you want a K3 control application, then look at the N4PY software. IMHO, HRD is the most complete, but it does have problems when coupled with the P3 - the intense polling of HRD is its primary downfall, but when it does the job, it does it quite well. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/19/2011 3:27 PM, Iain Haywood wrote: Any suggestions for a general HRD type software for windows that implements the comms with the K3 is a good way that wont crash my poor old overworked PC? 73's __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for June 19 20, 2011
Good Evening, Twenty meters worked wonderfully this afternoon. Many more contacts than recent weeks have provided. There was QSB and a number of storms across the country but turning up the RF gain helped dig out the weaker stations. Forty meters has become quite the local net over the last two months. I rarely reach over the Rockies let alone the Cascades or Sierras. Today I got two Californians with very different weather reports. Dale mentioned 90 while Brian gave me one in the 70s. Both reports were warmer than mine. I got to 55 degrees today with rain and clouds. One spot of blue was all I saw. Tuesday will be the hottest day of the week with a forecast of 70 degrees. Then it goes back down into the fifties again with ever more rain. Looks like summer will be much like spring. Maybe I should drive east or south to see some sun and to feel warmth again. What a strange year! Hopefully the better propagation we had today will continue throughout the week and into next weekend. Maybe the sun will prove all the prognosticators incorrect and flare up again. Unfortunately, Dave, W1HKJ wishes to have Hamlib compiled as part of the Fldigi application for convenience of those installing his Windows builds of Fldigi, but changes we needed to make with the GNU Build System in Hamlib has left him unable to do so since the release of Hamlib 1.2.13 back in February which has the improved K3 support. We continue to work with Dave to resolve this issue. Note that this only affects the Windows, Mac OS/X, and binary tarball for Linux releases directly from http://www.w1hkj.com For those tracking Linux distributions such as Debian Testing/Unstable, or one of the later releases of Ubuntu and derivatives, this is not an issue as Hamlib is updated separately.
