I knew when I ordered the K3 that I did not care for the alternate key operations but I did not realize that M1-M4 would be so useful to overcome the normal behaviour of other buttons. Re: [Elecraft] Concentric knobs??
Having managed to break a few myself (have to remind myself I'm not rebuilding an auto engine), I think what is going on is that the knobs are (or were) still curing, causing them to shrink a tiny bit after being tightened on the shaft. I think the curing accelerates after being put on the radio because they have free air around them, instead of being in a bin or box. I found the screws TIGHTER a week after I put the knobs on. I simply loosened and retightened them to pinky torque and no problems since. Pinky torque is to use your pinky ONLY as pressure on the allen wrench when tightening. The assembly was very straightforward, easier than the K3. It was speeded up by the fact that the parts inventory was missing from the preliminary kit manual, so no time was spent checking for completeness -- I just kept building, waiting to see if anything crucial had been omitted (nothing was). There was a pre-production glitch with a ribbon cable, but that was quickly remedied by Bob Wolbert, K6XX, the project manager, and the finished kit works great. Although this may not bear management's approval, I gave it several hours of workout in the All Asian contest this weekend, running JA's at a steady 600 watts on my wattmeter. Nary a problem, and the temperature readout never went above 60 degrees C. (it's rated for 90 degrees C.). The integration with the K3 is delightful. The amp and radio follow each other's band changes, and the K3 remembers two power levels, the standby and operate levels, and switches automatically. The KPA500 also comes on when you turn on the K3 (provided the main power switch on the back of the amp is on), so it's just like having a more powerful radio. All in all, operation is really seamless with the K3. I imagine it would be almost as good with any other radio, as the amp, when not connected to the K3, switches bands with the first dit due to rf sampling. Anyway, I'm one happy camper with the KPA500, and wanted to share my experience. 73, andy ae6y __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Fw: KPA500 kit
Dave, I think that actually may not be the intended behavior. I used a 15-pin extender cable (non-Elecraft), and one of the pins in the AUX output is a PWR ON output from the K3. I have heard that Elecraft actually cuts this pin in their interconnect cable, because the PWR ON features of the K3 and the KPA500 don't actually correspond properly (the KPA's is is a toggle, while the K3's is a high or low state). The result is that with my cable, the K3 will turn on the KPA500, but won't turn it off. Furthermore, while the K3 is on, the front panel ON button on the KPA500 won't turn it off either. So it may be better not to have this feature at all. I found non-Elecraft cables are quite inconsistent as to what they actually consist of. Many are VGA extender cables, which actually don't use all 15 pins. In addition, I have some such cables that apparently ground the K3 PTT input line, with the result that you can't turn the radio off while the cable is connected! 73, andy ae6y -Original Message- From: Dave Perry Sent: Thursday, June 23, 2011 11:40 AM To: 'Elecraft Reflector' Subject: [Elecraft] Fw: KPA500 kit Andy, How do you get the KPA500 to turn on when you turn on the K3? 73, andy ae6y __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3 beta, A/B operation
The odd frequency limits appear to be related only to changing between fixed and tracking modes. When switching from tracking to fixed, the display frequency limits are fixed at the odd values based on (VFO A +/- span/2) instead of being forced to the correct round (5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100 KHz) value for the current span. Since the fixed/track mode is stored on a per band basis, stepping through the bands will screw up the frequency limits when moving from a fixed band to a track band and back. This behavior has not changed even with the most recent (private) firmware release. Simply put, when changing from tracking to fixed mode, the LF end of the display range should be set to the correct round value - offset from the bottom of the current band by a multiple of span/2 to place VFO A in the center half of the span. The VFO A cursor should be shifted to accommodate round display limits (as if the mode had already been fixed) rather than creating odd limits around the centered position of the VFO A cursor. In addition, Fixed/Track should be a global setting 73, ... [Elecraft] [P3] Rounded-off start frequencies
In version 1.09, the algorithm for rounding off the start frequency should be unchanged from the last production release (1.05). The start frequency is rounded off only if the K3 VFO A is jumped to some frequency well outside the current display span. If you just tune VFO A past the edge of the display, then the center frequency changes based on MENU:FixMode, but the start frequency is not automatically rounded off. That was done on the theory that the operator may have set a certain display range for a reason and would want it to be the same when he tunes back again. So, for example, if you select Tracking mode, the center frequency is set to the VFO A frequency. You can change the center frequency (and thus the start/stop frequencies) to whatever you want by tuning the K3 or by using the P3 CENTER control. If you then switch to Fixed-Tune mode, the center frequency and start/stop frequencies stay the same. The problem with always rounding off the start frequency is that it might prevent the operator from setting it where he wants it (a contest or DX segment, for example). So it's a feature, not a bug. :=) Alan N1AL __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K2/100 75 meters lost receive
Hello group, My K2/100 with KAT2 seems to have lost recieve on 75 meters only. It transmits fine there but upon releasing the mic it sounds like the coax has been cut. This is in a mobile installation using a screwdriver antenna with a swr of less than 1.2:1. It matters not whether the ATU is in line or bypassed--receive sensitivity is very low. If I tune my antenna analyzer to the same frequency and hold it close to the radio it will pick that up and display an s-meter reading, so I know it's not stuck in transmit. All other bands work normally. Where do I start? Re: [Elecraft] [P3] Rounded-off start frequencies
The problem with always rounding off the start frequency is that it might prevent the operator from setting it where he wants it (a contest or DX segment, for example). So it's a feature, not a bug. :=) It is always possible for an operator to set the band edge where he wants it with the static or slide settings for Fixed Mode Auto Adjust. The inability to round the start frequency in the half-span and full span modes makes the fixed modes much less useful ... and rather defeats the purpose of full/half span, in my opinion. I chose half-span adjust with spans of 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100 or 200 KHz so I can easily read the frequency of interesting signals from the graticule. If it is necessary for the user to tune to a specific frequency. then cycle from fixed to tracking and back to fixed just to set the start frequency to a round number, the fixed tune modes might as well be eliminated since the odd frequency scale destroys most of the utility of the fixed full and half span modes. 73, ...
