[Elecraft] K3 - dual mikes at same time - biased and un-biased?

2011-08-15 Thread N2TK, Tony
I have a question to see if there is an easy, foolproof (almost) way to
switch between a biased mike (CM500) and a non-biased mike (Heil Proset). At
KP2M we sometimes run multi-op with two K3's. We change ops every 4 hours. I
like using the CM500 and another op likes using the Heil Proset. The
differences are the biased vs. non-biased and the TX EQ are different.

I was wondering if between the front and rear panel mike jacks and the
programmable commands if there would be a quick way to switch headsets.
Sometimes we switch ops during a long run so whatever we do has to be fast.
And I would like it to be close to foolproof so that we don't forget to do
it. Maybe a small external program to make the switch?

The simple solution is that I bring my Heil Proset too. But I really like
the comfort of the CM500's when wearing them for long periods.

Tnx for any feedback.

What do they say at Elecraft Support when you ask them? Have you ever talked

I occasionally saw this problem in earlier KPA firmware. It seemed
intermittant and I was unsure if it was me or the firmware that was causing
this - sounds like it was the firmware. I'm currently testing the latest

2011-08-15 Thread WD0ECO
Hello,

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my K3/100 Kit tomorrow, 8/16/11, and
had a question along this line.

I am wanting to connect a Yaesu MD-100 desk mic to the front, the Heil
Proset headset to the back, a remote foot switch to PTT for both CW and the
Heil Proset, and connect my Yaesu SP 2000 external speaker. Will this setup
work OK?

Thanks for all input. I'm looking forward to joining the Elecraft family!!!
Knowing Tom Hammond, N0SS, for almost 40 years and grieving his loss, I know
that I will love the K3 in his honor.

[Elecraft] Proper K3 filter/options selection?

2011-08-15 Thread paule...@yahoo.com
I fell in love with the three Elecraft K3's that we had at ST0R and have
decided to order a new one for myself to replace the one that was lost in
transit upon return from South Sudan. (all Intrepid-DX Group gear is lost)

Each of the K3's at ST0R were slightly different. I brought a bare-bones model,
however the better filtered models were noticably better.

I am ordering in the next day or two in hopes to beat the price increase and to
get it in time for my next DXpedition to Rotuma in late Sept.

Can you experts check this configuration and tell me if it will be ideal for
CW/SSB/RTTY?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] K3 AM filter (on receive) question

2011-08-15 Thread Edward R. Cole
One of the reasons I bought the 13-KHz filter was to process wide
band audio baseband for use by spectrum sw, but it appears the
"modes" limit this if I understand correctly. Example in FL1
(13-KHz) I am only able to reach 4-KHz in USB. Same goes for DATA-A
max bw is 4-KHz. AM - 5 KHz, FM (not adjustable) presumed to be 13-KHz.

Of course I have implemented use of the LP-Pan which replace the K3
2nd IF with a SDR which is bw limited only by nyquist and soundcard
capability (currently 96 KHz).

What limits it is a 4Khz low pass filter that all the audio passes through,
independent of mode.

You're ordering more filters than you need. I would go with 2.8 kHz,
1.8kHz and 250 Hz in the main RX, 2.7 kHz and 250 Hz in the second RX.
You're only likely to use diversity with CW on the lower bands. The
2.8kHz filter is flatter in the passband, so reduces incidental AM with
RTTY, which might help in a multi-station environment.

And unless you're a total mechanical clutz or too busy to build, I
strongly recommend buying the kit. It's screw-together, takes about 10
hours with one RX, another 2-3 hrs for 2nd RX. Big cost savings, all
the modules are pre-tested, and you'll know how to pull it apart to work
on it or trade modules when things go wrong.

Re: [Elecraft] Proper K3 filter/options selection?

2011-08-15 Thread Rick Stealey

If you want a separate receive only antenna port in addition to Antenna A/B you
might consider the KXV3A option.
i.e. for a Beverage on 160. There is no way you can transmit on that port to
accidentally damage the receive
antenna.
I am assuming you are equipping only the sub-rx with the narrow filters, for
split operation.
By the way, congratulations to whoever it was at ST0R who copied my little
FT-100 on 20 cw,
while my K3 was out in Calif for repairs at the mother ship.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Presets/Settings for JT65B / EME

2011-08-15 Thread Edward R. Cole
I believe I am running 4.33 (what shows in CONFIG).

What we want for WSJT modes is full bw, totally flat freq.
response. If I could get 13-KHz it would be great for JT-65 but it
appears the K3 DSP limits audio out to about 4-KHz except in AM or FM
modes (which are useless for soundcard programs).
-
BTW no one has answered my question how to set DATA-A modes when
using the K3 Memory Editor. I seem to get random settings when I
chose DATA-A with the Editor. I want it to default to DATA-A USB for
use of most soundcard sw.

I can manually change this with DATA MD key but the change is not
saved and it reverts to whatever Memory Editor chose if I change
frequency by selecting memory channels.

First, thanks for all you guys did. I never worked you but I think I worked
all the other ops, some more than once. Great operating by all, and a hugely
successful undertaking.

Very sad about the lost gear. Here's hoping it'll show up in due course.

I can attest that you can get by nicely for DXing with 2 receivers, 2.7 and
0.4 8-pole in main, 2.7 only in sub-rx. Of course it's nice to have more,
but honestly I've never felt that I had to have 'em.

Whatever you get, you're 100% right that the K3 is the dream DXpedition rig.
Good luck!

2011-08-15 Thread WD0ECO
Hi Don,

I just replied to you via email an answer along with a couple of other
questions.

Yes, I'm getting an adapter for the mic in order to use it on the K3 and
continue using it on my FT-950.

Thanks,
Mitch

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Presets/Settings for JT65B / EME

2011-08-15 Thread Richard Ferch
Ed,

If I remember correctly, when a DATA mode frequency memory is stored in
the K3 the data sub-mode is remembered as part of the information stored
at the time the memory is created. For example, if your K3 data sub-mode
happened to be AFSK-A at the time the memory was stored, I believe the
sub-mode will be restored to AFSK-A every time you recall that memory. If
this is correct, the way to get it to remember the DATA-A sub-mode would
be to delete your existing DATA mode memories and re-create them from
scratch with the radio in DATA-A sub-mode.

As I understand it, the K3's audio output is cut off at 4.2 kHz in all
modes, including AM and FM, regardless of which IF filter is selected.
Assuming no EQ is applied (EQ is disabled in DATA modes), the output audio
response will be nominally flat between approx. 200 Hz and 4.2 kHz,
subject to IF filtering and the SHIFT and WIDTH DSP control settings. If
your widest IF filter is 2.8 kHz, then your maximum nominally flat audio
bw in SSB-based modes (including DATA-A as well as USB) will be 2.8 kHz,
although you can use the SHIFT control to shift the audio passband within
the overall 0.2 - 4.2 kHz audio window. Note also that even if you have a
wider IF filter that is enabled in DATA modes, the wider bandwidth it
provides will only apply during receive - your transmit bandwidth will
still be limited by the 2.7 or 2.8 kHz transmit IF filter.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Presets/Settings for JT65B / EME

2011-08-15 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
I don't understand why you want 13 kHz for JT65.

The system requirements from their webpage are

System Requirements
• SSB transceiver and antenna for one or more VHF/UHF bands
• Computer running the Microsoft Windows, Linux, or FreeBSD operating
system
• 800 MHz or faster CPU and 128 MB of available RAM
• Monitor with at least 800 x 600 resolution (more is better)
• Sound card supported by your operating system
• Computer-to-radio interface using a serial port to key your PTT line. Linux
and FreeBSD versions can also use a parallel port.
• Audio connections between transceiver and sound card
• A means for synchronizing your computer clock to UT

None of this even remotely indicates 13 kHz needed for operation. The
signal seems to be only 400-500 Hz wide. So if anything it indicates
that the data A mode on a K3 should be ideal. Using a 6 kHz filter for
SSB would give you 4.5 kHz bandwidth on a K3, or eight to ten signals.
 What gives?

4.39 is the current production. Some number of changes since 4.33

Stations looking for JT-65 QSOs tune to a central calling frequency, which
is on a menu in the program's main panel. Then they transmit somewhere
within a window centered on that calling frequency. The width of that window
is displayed on the JT-65 screen; it's only 2 khz wide, and in my experience
just about all the signals appear within +/- 500 khz of the center. The
standard 2.7 filter is plenty.

The limit is in the audio DSP - you will see the maximum cutoff even
on the Line Out which does not pass through the analog (op amp) LPF

Re: [Elecraft] Proper K3 filter/options selection?

2011-08-15 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I agree with Jim that you are over ordering the filters.

That said, I would stick with the stock 2.7 KHz in both main and sub
RX. Quite simply, there isn't enough difference in selectivity or
IMD performance to justify the cost of the change.

Add the 1.8 KHz for "narrow SSB" in the Main RX (you certainly don't
need both 2.1 KHz and 1.8 KHz). I would also go with either the
Elecraft 500 Hz or INRAD 400 HZ CW filter in both receivers (400 Hz
to be wide enough for RTTY) and add the 200 Hz for "narrow" CW.

There simply is not enough difference between the 500/400 Hz filters
and the 250 Hz (340 - 370 Hz nominal) to justify both 400 and 250 in
the same receiver.

I also recommend the KXV-3 for support of separate receive antennas
and the IF output.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - dual mikes at same time - biased and un-biased?

2011-08-15 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I have created 2 macros to switch between a Heil HC5 and a Icom SM-8 (front and
rear)
It works fine, but it is not foolproof.
The problem is that the BIAS switch toggles, There is no foolproof command - if
you press the
Heil Macro twice, it will toggle the BIAS on / off.
I have asked Wayne once if he could change this, but I do not remember that I
got a response.

Re: [Elecraft] Saving K2 configuration

2011-08-15 Thread Nigel
Hi John, Mike Markowski AB3AP wrote a neat program back in 2007 which reads
the configuration of the K2, see

http://udel.edu/~mm/ham/elecraft/

It takes a few steps to get it installed as it run under java, so follow the
instructions carefully. If you are running under windows the steps to
copy the "rxtxSerial.dll" and "RXTXcomm.jar" files are critical. Also if
you get a Java update you have to re-copy these files to the updated
version.

With XP I needed to run the "Prams.bat" file to get it to go.I found
that the output data was only displayed on the screen so after emailing
with Mike he suggested that the contents of Params.bat be changed to

set CLASSPATH=.java Params COM4 >K2params.txt
K2params.txt

This wrote the parameters to a text file which was stored in the same
directory as Params.bat.
Be sure to change the Com port number in the Params.bat file to that which
has the serial connection to the K2 and to read BFO settings you have to
have the frequency counter probe connected.
Hope this helps, 73 Nigel ZL2DF

[Elecraft] [K2] KAT2 and SWR calibration

2011-08-15 Thread Chip Stratton
I have a recently obtained K2 with KAT2 module that I am trying to get up to
speed. I'll have more questions and data later, but to start with I have a
question about calibrating the SWR readings.

After going through the procedures in the manual, I find that the KAT2 under
reads SWR. When the load is 50 ohms resistive, it shows 1:1. When SWR is
higher, e.g. an almost purely resistive 7:1 (according to a Rig Expert
AA-230) the KAT2 reads 4.5:1

I've calibrated forward power with a DL1 dummy load. Is there any problem
adjusting R2 such that SWR on the KAT2 corresponds more closely to what the
AA-230 reads?

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KAT2 and SWR calibration

2011-08-15 Thread Don Wilhelm
Chip,

I have found many KAT2s that underreport the SWR. There is no harm in
setting the REFL pot to maximum if that is what it takes. The KAT2 is
not a precision wattmeter when it comes to SWR - the reflected power
detected allows it to tune for an SWR minimum, no matter what that value
may be - so the tuner function is not hurt even though the SWR reported
is less than actual.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Info Button

2011-08-15 Thread Jack Brindle
The use of the INFO button is described in the KPA500 manual. It is used in
clearing and displaying faults without returning the KPA500 to operate mode.

[Elecraft] KAT3 in 6m

2011-08-15 Thread Johnny Siu

Hello Group,

I found something interesting.  As some of you may be aware the pin 1 wire to
ANT1 is shorter than pin 2 wire to the ANT 2.  All the way through, I connect
my 6m hamstick to ANT2 and 20m hamstick to ANT 1.

Last evening, I did a swap with 6m hamstick on ANT 1(the one with shorter pin 1
wire).  I got 92w out which is more than the usual 82w.  In other words, the
length of the wiring from the pin to ANT socket does matter.  In my case, I
got higher RF output when connecting my 6m ant to ANT 1.

There is no adverse effect to 20m hamstick which is connected to ANT 2. I just
share my experience with other elecrafters with low RF output in 6m.

TNX & 73,

Johnny VR2XMC

[Elecraft] K3 Kit Assembly Manual error

2011-08-15 Thread Dennis Moore
I searched the archive and didn't see this listed. I don't have a K3,
but am interested in the radio so was looking at the assembly steps.

Page 22 of the K3 Kit Assembly Manual. Note on the left side of Figure 24.
Sentence reads "Also, on some boards C6 and C6 may not be present.

What should it read?
