I have also noticed that if you lower the rf gain that that meter does
not deflect all to S9 like my other K3 that does not exhibit this issue.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 fuse block door

2011-09-15 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Hi Jim:

The fuse block is fully seated the way. See the bottom illustration on page
5 of your owner's manual. The contacts offer significant resistance as you
push the block in the last few millimeters and it's important you fully seat
it.

Hi,

I just received my factory built KPA-500 amplifier. The fuses were not
included with the amp so I went to Radio Shack and picked up two 3 AG 6 amp
fuses for 240 v operation.
With the fuses installed the fuse block door will not close. Is this normal?
With the fuses out of the fuse block the door closes perfectly but with the
fuses installed I just can't close it.

Any suggestions?

My recollection is that the fuses need to be very firmly seated otherwise
there is a problem as you indicate. I had a sismilar issue until I realised.

You should have received a fuse package for both 220 and 110v fuses.

[Elecraft] [K2] Lost 80m recieve again.

2011-09-15 Thread Alan Davenport
Hello,

I have lost 80m receive on my K2 S/N:7012 intermittently again. For many days
it was working fine, I even added the 160m module during this period and it was
fine, yesterday morning when I turned on the rig, I had no 160,80,17 & 10m.
Cycling through the bands did not bring them back.

I moved the rig to the bench and took the top cover off. I checked the VCO
voltages on R30 and found they were all within spec. I connected an antenna and
found that yes, all bands were working again. (So much for checking the relays
like I wanted to.) Taking the bottom cover off I spent a good couple hours
looking for a bad connection but found none. I reassembled the rig and all day
until it worked perfectly and when I went to bed it was fine. This morning,
problem back. Again, cycling through the bands has no effect HOWEVER I found
that power cycling the rig will often (temporarily) fix the issue. I believe
when the bands come back they will not go away until the rig is shut off but
will remain operational. The rig worked all afternoon and this evening, problem
back. Power cycled 3 or 4 times and 80 was again working.

I am thinking a sticky relay. It looks like the only relay common to all 4
bands is K13 but I need a sanity check before I change out that relay. Can
anyone find any flaws in my logic or offer any advice on additional tests I can
do?

Thank you,
73 de Al, W2GZN

Re: [Elecraft] Heathkit Ham Products

2011-09-15 Thread Gary VK4FD
Ron,

As Elecraft have shown the way with many innovative designs and have leapt to
the fore in manufacturing many fine amateur radio products, it is not to be
unexpected that eventually another company will try to cash in on the perceived
market to generate revenue for their business.

Will Heathkit be able to produce kits to compare with Elecraft's quality and
performance?...not likely, History will show that it is a rare occurrance for a
rival to seriously compete when you consider that Elecraft have some of the
brightest minds under one roof (umbrella) hard at work to bring us future proof
designs, outstanding quality and technically superior products.

Elecraft is not an amazing company when you look closely at their employees.
They are driven by two of the best minds in amateur radio and supported by a
dedicated team of engineers, talented and thoughtful team members and have a
great group of enthusistic customers questioning each design and offering
refinements in a positive way.

It is the way in which Elecraft interact with their customer base that enables
them to stay at the very cutting edge of design and further enhances their
reputation as an industry leader.

Heathkit have a 'history' certainly, but that history has not always been 'the
best', rather, some of their products are most forgettable and so I don't
expect their products will be 'ground breaking' nor do I expect them to see a
massive influx of orders in the short term. We (HAM's) are a picky bunch and
they will need to work very hard to earn their stripes in a very competitive
business environment.

The hype that Heathkit have generated may well be short lived. They will have
some very serious work to do if they expect to rival Elecraft. Wayne and Eric
have done much for amateur radio. It is not just their designs and business
acumen at work here, they are genuine believers in Amateur Radio, the
interaction with their customer base is extraordinary in this day and age where
companies are chasing every dollar to add to the bottom line with little or no
regard to customer service (Telco's for example?) whilst Elecraft strive to be
inclusive, discuss openly enhancements, provide an extremely supportive voice
to all their customers and the proof is in the eating of the pudding...Grin

Pass the Kool - Aid folks

I wish Heathkit well but hold out little hope that any 'New Generation'
products will be forthcoming. Future goodies I leave to Eric and Wayne to dream
up. My job is to save them dang pennies. (Honey?, you got some more change I
can have please?)

At the risk of reawakening this thread too much, I see an ARRL announcement
that Heath has decided to enter the Ham radio market due to a strong
  response from potential customers:

"Wake (Heathkit's Director of Sales and Marketing) said that Heathkit is
presently working on developing a few Amateur Radio kits. 'Initially, the
kit line will include a few accessories, like kits for a Dual Watt Meter,
Antenna Tuners and the Cantenna,' he explained. 'Once we are a little more
settled, I think we will develop a QRP receiver.' "

I'm not sure what they mean by a "QRP Receiver" since QRP work generally
requires at least as good a receiver as most QRO activities. I suspect it
means a moderate or low performance receiver.

"Not be hard for an enterprising person..." Really. I look forward to

[Elecraft] Heathkit Ham Products

2011-09-15 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire

Thanks for those. That SOTA expedition sounded like lots of fun! Now planning
for portable antenna systems. Sorry, throwing wires into trees is right out; my

the moment. Those have interested me for quite a long time, actually. So, I'll
wile away the hours on that as well :)

Thanks again for the links.

Bob,

The KX3s that I saw at Dayton had the 2.1mm coaxial power jack.
I would expect the amplifier to use APP connectors, but that is only a
guess on my part, I have no information about that.

Re: [Elecraft] Failure Of KPA500 - Ideas?

2011-09-15 Thread k6rb
Richard,

When you key the amp using the cable from key out (K3) to key in
(KPA-500), do you see the little asterisk next to the frequency on the KPA
display? That's the symbol that shows the I/O module key-in line is
getting pulled to ground by that cable. If you're not getting that symbol,
I would suggest that you have a problem with the I/O module or that cable.
If you are getting that symbol, but seeing no RF out on the LED display,
it sounds like it's a problem in the PA module (which would be consistent
with a sequential drop in power). I'm assuming you've gotten no fault
indications and the voltage is within specified limits.

I didn't mean to imply that anyone should follow my example; I was
just relating what I do in my relatively simple station and computer
setup.

I'm not about to install a sophisticated grounding system, so
unplugging stuff is the next best option. I probably wouldn't go that
route if my setup was very much more involved or if I lived on a
mountain peak.

Re: [Elecraft] Lightning Strike - Metal Roof attracts?

2011-09-15 Thread drewko
Well, I don't have as much as you do connected to the K3: two
antennas; counterpoise; key; headphones; power cable; occasionally
RS232 and/or audio cables.

Computer has CAT5; audio cables; printer; scanner; monitor; keyboard;
power; perhaps RS232 and audio to K3. (I can re-plug all this stuff by
feel without having to see the back of the PC; that tells you how many
times I've done it )

The other PC is a clunker that I'm not too worried about; i only
disconnect the power and CAT5 from it. Ethernet cards seem to be
susceptible to induced electrical charges from storms; maybe it is
just the long 60ft cable run, but one card died from lightning strike
several hundred feet away. I unplug everything from the DSL
modem/router (4 plugs including phone line and power).

This is all part of the thunderstorm season ritual, including forever
running around three story house opening windows for fresh air or
closing them again to keep the rain out.

It's a hassle but so is dealing with insurance companies, buying new
stuff and restoring computer systems. It only takes about 5 minutes to
make the rounds and unplug everything.

[Elecraft] Failure Of KPA500 - Ideas? (Resend)

2011-09-15 Thread Richard Griest
Elecraft Group.

Resent - Sorry if this is a Dupe!

Just working CW on 15 Meters with my K3 and KPA500 when I noticed the
Power Output LED Indicators starting to drop and continuing until all
were out and the PA dropped out of the Keyed Mode. With KPA500 is
attached with the AUX Cable to the K3 the Symptoms are: (Note: Unit
has been in operation w/o any issues for 3 to 4 weeks)

1. Unit is powered up
2. In the "OPER" Mode, No Keying Up or any indications of any power output
3. In the "STBY" Mode, LED's indicate both 100 Watts and a <1.5 SWR Reading

Again in the "OPER" Mode there is no indication of either a Relay
Keying Up or Power Output. Obviously these are related. Relay not
keying up prevents any Drive to get to the KPA nor any Power Output to
be generated.

I added back the TX Keyed Line from the K3 to the KPA and still on Po.
I have also taken the unit apart (I built the unit) and checked the
obvious items. I.E. Wires Pinched or Shorted. Connection Loose.
Proper Wire Dressing, "wiggled" any and all boards in case of any
intra-board contact issues..etc. Nothing seems to be out of line
nor is there any "smell" or "odor" of any tell tail component
failures. Unit has been put back together and retested with the same
symptoms.

I will be calling Elecraft later this AM but in the meantime I thought
I would send a note and look for a possible solution from the
"Elecraft Brain Pool".
