Re: [Elecraft] K3 H Mode Mixer

2011-10-14 Thread ik8tng
Thank you very much for your comments.

Wayne recognized interesting results when we reported yhe MDS, DR and IP3
comparison figures. We have to appreciate his comment “A few K3 users in
extremely high-signal environments might benefit from a few extra dB of
dynamic range, at the cost of a mixer add-on module like you described”,
this may reply to your question.

The K3 is a *high performance radio *and for this is very interesting. We
are *amateur radio *and we like to “squize” equipment to see if we can get
dome extra functionalities. With a radio like the K3 we cannot expect to
have improuvements of tens of dB/dBm, like it is possible with other
commercial equipment, following similar mods. As you can see we can still
squize out something. We are not doing business, only enjoying radio and we
like to share our findings with others Hams.

We went into the K3 1st mixer mod because it is really the easiest we can
apply to a radio…real swap with no soldering iron.
http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/file/n6891521/hmodemixerelecraft.jpg

We tried to measure spuries as suggested by Wayne but we were not sure about
differences. We decided to do other tests that may help to understand if the
improuvements are beneficial or not. Please see the second table figures.
The improuvements are not only instrumental but also detectable by ears. The
nearly 6dB in noise drop at the loudspeaker is something valuable and can be
felt.

Any suggestions for finding the last station worked in a pack?

One of the problems with RTTY pileups, as with the other modes, is many
people call endlessly. That makes it difficult, as you won't hear (or see)
just one signal when it's time for the caller to xmit a report.

I'm sure I'm in the minority using this technique, but I've worked RTTY long
enough to be able to recognize the sound of my callsign, CQ and 599 in my
head. Being a high speed CW guy probably helps, too.

When I tune with VFO B in DUAL mode, listening for the responding station,
besides having the display, I listen for 599 599.

[Elecraft] 27 Ohm 1/8w resistor in new K3 kit?

2011-10-14 Thread Neoklis Kyriazis

Hi,

I just completed the first stage of my K3 kit (where now calibrations etc must
be made),
but there is a 27 Ohm 1/8 W resistor in the kit, which I haven't been able to
figure out
what its purpose is. I expect its for a mod of some kind but I have not figured
out which.

Any ideas please? Is there a modification that may not be incorporated in a new
K3 kit?

My thanks in advance.

Checked the output on external wattmeter at 20W power setting. Output is

Output is close to setting and transmit bargraph display shows linear
changes.
Does this confirm faulty D16 and D17?

Don't hold your breath. I've been waiting literally for years to get
the configuration code fixed. Apparently because it works for some
folk, then it must be my fault I haven't been able to get it to work on
no less then three different computers, some with real serial ports.

I need to program it to drive a 3 of 8 encoded Ameritron head. I
ordered just the head figuring that I didn't need their control box.
I'm about to order the Ameritron control box now, because it will accept
1 of 8 from an external box (which the KRC2 does normally) and encode it
into 3 of 8 for the remote head. As a bonus, it will allow me to
manually select the antenna, if needed.

I have to say that my experience with the KRC2 is the only really
negative experience I've had with Elecraft gear. Everything else I've
gotten from them has run just fine, and I've gotten superb support. The
KRC2 is the only glaring exception, and I suppose I'll just have to
chalk it up to an old kit that simply isn't on the company's radar any
more for proper after-sales support. If they no longer want to spend
the manpower on it any more, they should officially retire it.

I had issues with the Array Solutions band decoders and Don, Jack and

to the fact that there are absolutely no standards when it comes to

Correction ... it gathers operating frequency from the CAT data.
The user can configure as many bands and antennas as needed.
Among other things this allows switching frequency on antennas
like the Force 12 or Optibeam 80/40 meter yagis or auto-select
band segments in loaded antennas.

In addition, Station Master provides 20 relay isolated outputs
that can be used in any combination for selecting antennas,
Bandpass filters or auxiliary frequency/band/sequencer based
functions.

I just built the KRC2 and it supports 60m. Unfortunately, the software is
 buggy and
won't talk to the KRC2 for programming! I'm going to send it back if I

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] [KRC2] Is there a KRC3 in the works?

2011-10-14 Thread Dave New, N8SBE
To be clear, I have no issues with interfacing the KRC2 with external
devices.

The only issue I've had is using the Windows-based program provided on
the Elecraft web site to attempt to configure the behavior of the KRC2.
It always fails to connect to the KRC2, no matter what settings I try,
on both the KRC2 and the computer, including using two different
varieties of USB to serial cables (both of which work with all my other
equipment, including the K3 and P3), and a laptop from work that has a
real serial port.

On the other hand, the re-flash program works just dandy. I can
re-flash the KRC2 at will, over and over again, ad infitum, ad nauseum.
So, I don't think the problem lies in the computer to KRC2 interface.
I've been tempted to reverse-compile the KRC2 code file, which is rather
small, so I could just patch the configuration table in the flash image,
recompute the checksum and re-flash. Maybe if I wasn't putting in 50+
hours a week at my day job, and about 15 hours commuting a week on top
of that, I'd feel like I had more time to spend on such a fascinating
adventure. I have 30+ years embedded software development experience,
so it really wouldn't be all that hard for me.

As it is, I'd rather spend what spare time I have building my station
and operating, instead of debugging the KRC2 configuration software.

P.S. Everyone at Elecraft has been really nice when I talk to them about
my KRC2 issues, and offer to help, then it just seems to fall into a
black hole. It seems to me that the KRC2 support is really just not on
anyone's priority list. I guess that would be fine with me, and I could
just go about figuring out how to work around it.

I have had issues with my KRC2 much of it is the poor operations manual
and interfacing to the K3. Jack at Elecraft and Gary have been great to
work with. Many of my problems appear to have been from jumper issues.
The documentation needs some major work in the way of examples of how to
hook up the unit to other devices etc.

I had issues with the Array Solutions band decoders and Don, Jack and
Gary were all very helpful in solving them. There are many answers due
to the fact that there are absolutely no standards when it comes to
devices such as bandpass filters etc. Some companies put pull up
resistors in their devices others do not.

If you want a device that can control your bandpass filters and multiple

I had issues with the Array Solutions band decoders and Don, Jack and
Gary were all very helpful in solving them. There are many answers due
to the fact that there are absolutely no standards when it comes to
devices such as bandpass filters etc. Some companies put pull up
resistors in their devices others do not.

If you want a device that can control your bandpass filters and multiple
antenna boxes look at the Microham Station Master. It gathers band data
from the Aux line and looks pretty slick. If I needed a box that did
more than just drive my bandpass filters I would own one!

[Elecraft] New CW Filter Installed in my K3 #5380

2011-10-14 Thread Roger White
Received the 250 Hz CW filter today and installed it in a short time. This is
the first time I have had the K3 open, as I bought it already assembled with a
few filters. Very nice looking inside! The filter is extremely sharp and this
is the first time I have experienced a very narrow, nicely made filter for CW.

[Elecraft] K3: Some advice on mods

2011-10-14 Thread Phil Westover
I just received the following mod kits from Elecraft:

KPA3 12 v Sense Modification (1N4148)
K3 Hardware AGC Threshold Mod Kit
K3 Audio Line Out Mod Kit
K3 DSP Upgrade Swap
K3 I/O Buffer Mod Kit
K3 VFO Tuning Noise Filter Kit
K3 Remote I/O Board Upgrade
K3 Synth Stiffener

Question: Even though all of these are relatively simple (I've got lots of
successful experience with PCB work/rework), do any of you have a
recommended strategy for performing these mods? (i.e., just jump in and do
them all at once? do them one at a time, checking radio function each time?
doing certain ones together, then checking operation before doing others?
etc.)

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Some advice on mods

2011-10-14 Thread Scott
Phil,
I'd do the board/plug in mods first, then any soldering mods last if
possible. I'd only want to crack the case once, do the mods, close it
back up, then opcheck. The board mods should go very easily; the
soldering mods will depend on your skill/experience with a soldering
iron. Don't forget the trusty DMM.

[Elecraft] Some advice on mods

2011-10-14 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Phil,

I would do the mods according the related portion of PCB, e.g.

K3 Hardware AGC Threshold Mod Kit
K3 Audio Line Out Mod Kit +K3 Remote I/O Board Upgrade
K3 I/O Buffer Mod Kit
K3 VFO Tuning Noise Filter Kit

All the above are in the RF board.  After that, do the DSP swap which is on
front panel.

KPA3 12 v Sense Modification (1N4148) could be done at last.

Re: [Elecraft] 27 Ohm 1/8w resistor in new K3 kit?

2011-10-14 Thread Scott
Neoklis,

Did you order the KXV3A option?

If yes, a resistor comes with that option. But your NEW K3 should not
need this resistor mod as it is only for older units (2009 and prior).
Please see the second mod down on the page below:

The Elecraft mods page is here:

http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_app_notes.htm

I also received a 5.6k resistor with the MH2 microphone but that
resistor was only needed if using the microphone with a K2. So I didn't
have to install either resistor in my K3/MH2 combo.

[Elecraft] T32C on 20 SSB

2011-10-14 Thread Jim Sheldon
Good grief, that was almost TOO EASY with the KPA500 on line! Heard them a few
minutes ago on 14.182 indicating they were listening up 5. Hit split, cranked
VFO B to 14.187. The amp was already in operate as I had just changed from 15
meter RTTY so I gave 'em a call. Green lights all over the board. 500 out,
1:1 SWR and they came right back on the first one! It don't get too much
better than that, but like I said, that was almost too easy.

2011-10-14 Thread Nate Bargmann
And here I was proud of working them on 80m SSB around 0700z this past
Sunday morning with 100W and my low (22ft high) doublet. It took a
couple of calls but I'm in the log. I think that is my best DX on 80m
ever, not that I ever really tried before.

Let me say that the addition of the P3 makes working split a breeze.
There is just something about seeing the VFO B marker turn RED that
assures me that I'm not transmitting on the DX.

Before this past week I've never operated anything but SSB. But with the
memories and decoding capabilities of the K3, plus being able to find
the holes in the pileups with the P3, I've got T32C on 19 out of the 21
slots my antenna is capable of. This setup makes it so easy.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] [KRC2] Is there a KRC3 in the works?

2011-10-14 Thread Jack Brindle
Guys;

The KRC2 Config program has problems. That is one of the reasons it is still
classified as beta. We are trying to line up the resources to fix the problems,
and will have something much better as soon as we can.

In the meantime, there is a detail that might actually help. When the Config
Tool is commanded to download a band map, it appears to do so, but afterwards
reports an inability to communicate with the KRC2. But, the band map actually
was downloaded and is in the KRC2. The way to check this is to step through the
bands, checking that the outputs match the pattern selected in the Config Tool.

There are a few other problems in the tool, such as an incorrect default band
map pattern, and the inability to set the 6 meter selector for the K3 6 meter
mode. Again, we will be correcting these as soon as we possibly can.
Unfortunately, our resources are tied up with other much higher priority tasks
at present. Our apologies. The priority of the KRC2 Config tool is being bumped
higher, and we will resolve the problems as soon as we possibly can.

In the meantime, please realize that the KRC2 does a great job with its default
band map. Also, there are ways to have a single antenna selected for multiple
outputs (such as 10, 15 and 20 meters selecting a triband antenna) by
wire-ORing the output pins together.

Thank you for your patience. We apologize for stretching it way too far.

To be clear, I have no issues with interfacing the KRC2 with external

If you want a device that can control your bandpass filters and multiple
antenna boxes look at the Microham Station Master. It gathers band data
from the Aux line and looks pretty slick. If I needed a box that did
more than just drive my bandpass filters I would own one!
