Re: [Elecraft] Reference Oscillator Calibration

2011-12-23 Thread g...@abcs.com g...@abcs.com
Hi Don,

I'm awaiting the arrival of the G5RV from True Talk. It has a lot of
good reviews over at eham. I'm not sure where I'll put it, though. I
was thinking of the attic, but 50 ft is longer than my 25 ft attic.

I'm also considering one of the tak-tenna (taktenna.com) setups. This
is another with good eham reviews and looks relatively simple to set
up on the roof of the house. I know the antenna is as important as
the transceiver, and I'm hoping for a more elaborate setup eventually,
but right now I'd be happy with a basic operational level.

I'm trying to figure out how to set up the grounding. Also, the
wiring in the house wasn't done by professionals. The receptacle
tester shows a number of outlets having a ground/neutral reversed
error. Some check out ok and others don't even have the ground
connection on the receptacle. Hopefully I won't have to rewire the
whole house.

As always, any suggestions are welcome.

Merry Christmas to you, too!

When I finished my K3 I was afraid of the oscillator calibration so I
thought the factory defaults would be ok. It did work but after
caibration it sounded like a radio should. I called elecraft support
for some help and they walked my thru the procedure as the manual was a
little vauge for an inexperienced operation like myself.

Anyway you did good with your K3 it is one of the best on the market and
I had no idea on how good of a radio I acutally purchase. I almost
bought another IC7000 for the shack, that would been a big mistake.

The receive on this radio is fantastic and I always get random

What are you planning for your first antenna?

Is there any other way of calibrating the ref oscillator? Can it be

Sounds like the KPA500 Pin11 inhibit input is low on 6-meters. If you are
using the Elecraft 6-meter preamp and switching it on automatically using
this pin on the K3 accessory port, then you are also disabling the amplifier
on that band. Pin11 needs to stay high.

Just one other caution, if I may.

Before dabbling inside any piece of equipment where a current can possibly
flow, remove any rings from your fingers and remove your wristwatch and any
other conductive material. If they happen to be on the hand in your pocket,
so be it, but don't forget that if something happens, you may react without
thinking and put that left hand into service.

I took a Sharpie that had laying on my workbench, and changed the
color of the aux power connector both on the board and the wiring

prevent one from swapping them, but is a visual indication which one
goes where. One still has to take their time when working on a $1000

With a feeling of great stupidity coupled with a desire to prevent this
 for others:

Yesterday, I reassembled my K2 [#4398, Sep 2004] with the QRP top and
KAT2, having just sold my KPA100. I was interrupted by a phone call
after plugging the edge connector and speaker in. When I returned, I
 plugged the KAT2 coax into ... AUX 12V, grounding the 12V. :-((
Finishing the assembly, I decided to quickly power it up just to make sure.

Now, the cables I normally use with the K2 and KX1 have in-line fuses,
and I have just converted all the DC in the shack to APP. The power
supply was at the other end of the desk, so I grabbed the LiFePO4 15C
battery, plugged in one of my little adapter jumpers [APP to coaxial
power] ... no fuse ... and plugged it into the K2. I heard a distinct
click, I wondered if the on/off switch was on, it wasn't, I turned it
on, and radio was dead. At this point, I noticed the distinct odor of
misrouted electrons, an odor we all recognize, and removed the battery.

With no fuse, the heavy trace between the power connector and hot end of
C196, way above and beyond its call of duty, sacrificed itself.
Fortunately, the trace is now replaced by a short jumper wire and the
radio works. D10 seems to have survived, probably because, when used as
 a fuse, a PCB trace is ultra-fast.

A colleague of mine once said, The problem with 'Lessons Learned' is
that they rarely are. Thus encouraged, my lessons from this are:

 1. Never connect any power to any radio without an in-line fuse.

 2. Tape or otherwise cover AUX 12V unless you're actually using it [KPA100]

 3. Just because you've done something many times does not mean you'll
get it right on the many+1'th time. Many years ago in military uniform,
I knew this. I guess I just forgot.

 Hi,

I highly recommend the 75W dummy load from Ridge Equipment. I have one
permanently connected in my system. I believe it is a military surplus piece
of equipment with absolutely superior characteristics like an SWR at 500MHz
of 1.05 or less. It has no problem with 100W for a minute or less for sure.

 AB2TC - Knut

 Phil,

All dummy loads are not created equal. Connect yours directly (no coax)
to the LP-100 or an antenna analyzer to determine its characteristics
with frequency (I assume Larry calibrated your LP-100 to NIST
standards). A common ham dummy load is something to tune your amplifier
into and use for general purposes. If you are going to do measurements,
you will need something more like lab quality dummy loads.

Both your dummy load and the 6 feet of RG8X will show a frequency
dependency since you do not have a precision 50 ohm dummy load. A
transmission line that is not terminated in its characteristic impedance
acts like an impedance transformer, and that transformation ratio is
 frequency dependent.

If you want a dummy load that is flat WRT frequency and suitable for
instrumentation use, take a look at the Caddock 50 ohm Thick Film
Resistors - they are available up to 100 watt rating. You must use them
on a heat sink, and keep the leads as short as possible, and you will
have a precision dummy load. Caution - even with the heat sink, do not
exceed their power ratings, they will go open circuit in an instant.
I use several of those as instrumentation precision loads.

Other sources of precision dummy loads is Ridge Equipment -
 https://www.ridgeequipment.com/store/dummyloads.html. They have one
rated at 75 watts for $12 and one rated at 15 watts for $7.50 - those
are quite good for instrumentation purposes.

You should be able to test macros from the K3 Utility. If you look at K3
Utility Help, search for Edit Command Tester/K3 Macros. There's a screen
shot of a number of macros. You enter macro captions and the associated text
in this dialog and close the dialog. Then in the main command tester window,
click one of the macro buttons and the text for that macro is sent to the K3.

I've just started dabbling with K3 Macros. I've been able to save a simple
macro and program PF1 to run it. However, I have not been able to click on
the macro button in the command tester or enter commands in the tester and
have them execute on the K3. Am I either doing something wrong or am I
incorrect that commands can be tested from this window?

 Thanks,

[Elecraft] Impact of this mod: K3 I.F. Output Buffer Gain Modification???

2011-12-23 Thread Jack Berry
Can someone explain the real world value of making this modification? This mod
is listed on the Elecraft website with this description (new production
incorporates this mod):

This modification increases the signal level at the I.F. output by more than 10
dB. It requires changing one
easily-accessible resistor on the K3’s main RF board with either another
surface
mount device (SMD) or a leaded
1/8 watt resistor.
I have s/n #3012 and expect my radio was pre-modification. I will be adding
filters and other mods after the first of the year and want to make this is one
time affair if possible.

The main value is bringing the IF output up to a level that is usable
by the P3.

I thought that the mod was in all K3's after s/n 3600-something or

know the exact cut-in s/n or date.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mic input rear panel

2011-12-23 Thread Cady, Fred
Hello Pete,
The rear panel mic jack is a stereo (T-R-S) jack with the mono mic signal on
the tip. The ring is not connected. It is an unbalanced input and accepts
balanced or unbalanced dynamic mics but only unbalanced electret condenser
mics. When RL.X bias is on, it supplies 8 volts.
You can glean most of this by perusing the schematics. You can also see a
summary of all the KIO3 connections in the chapter 7 sampler for the KE7X K3
book. Have a look at www.ke7x.com.

What is the pinout for K3 rear panel mic input? Looking for how to wire a mic.
Didn't see it in the manual.
Off-the-shelf mic does seem to work even with K3 set to use rear panel mic.

2011-12-23 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
The app note says that the mod is incorporated into all new K3's since
September 2009.

Without it, the P3 (or other panadapters) should still function, but
some weak signals may be undetectable due to the noise floor of the IF
being below that of the panadapter.

2011-12-23 Thread Alan Bloom
The P3 is usable without the mod but it increases the sensitivity of the
P3 display. On the low bands you probably won't notice any difference
but if you do much 10 or 6 meter operating you probably want to make
sure the modification has been done.

I'm not sure of the serial number of the changeover, but the web site
says RF board Rev H3 and later have the new resistor value.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 + LP100A + Dummy Load

2011-12-23 Thread Edward R. Cole
Just a comment on dummy loads:

I do a lot of ham radio work at VHF and higher (up to 10-GHz), so
making good power measurements involves having a good 50-ohm
termination (load). For most of my testing I have several coaxial
loads: A 25w Termaline (Bird) is used a lot in the shack as it tests
Z=51 + j0 on my MFJ-269B antenna analyzer and shows zero reflected on
a Bird43 power meter. Some of the other loads show 52 or even 54
ohms on the MFJ, and not quite resistive (I marked all them so I
would know). In all cases resistance measurement with an ohmmeter
agrees with the R parameter in the complex impedance equation.

I even have a 500w Sierra termination (door stop load) which has a
integral power meter, but it is not exactly 50-ohms and the meter is
not in agreement with the Bird43, so I use it as a safe load for high
power but not for high accuracy measurements. I have seen coax loads
shift way off 50-ohms due to overheating from too much or too long a
transmission.

I bought some of the Cadsoft 100w surface-mount attenuators to use in
a 900-MHz amplifier to permit driving with 10w exciter. They were in
the $12 range from Mouser.

One can make very fine 50-ohm loads using them on a proper heat sink
at a fraction of the cost of coaxial loads.

[Elecraft] K3 MCU 4.47 Merry Christmas to me!

2011-12-23 Thread K8TB
So I go to have a holiday lunch with a bunch of hams, and I sit
across from fellow K3'r Paul, NF8J. We are a talking away, and I mention
something about my remote base, and Paul tells me (I've been off this
reflector for a while), that the K3 can now work with the RemoteRig. I
was a little puzzled, as I use the RemoteRig with my K3, driving the
home unit with my home computer and a copy of TRX.
Nope Paul sez, there was something on the reflector. So I come home,
and read up on firmware 4.47.
Well, let's update both K3's, the one at home and the one at the
remote base. Update the RemoteRig firmware at both ends, and then make
up a simple rs-232 null-modem cable.
Well, look at this. No mouse mouse dragging. Turn this knob, and
the remote site K3 totally obeys.

*This Is Way Cool!*

Wayne, Eric et al, thank you for the Christmas Present.

Now, the only problem is with K8AJ wanting to use it. Hmmm.

73 to all, de tom bosscher K8TB

p.s., Eric and Wayne, I would LOVE to be able to buy just a front panel
with a simple rs-232 interface, so I can use the remote base while K8AJ
uses the local K3. Or the other way around if she wants to. :)

[Elecraft] KPA500 Running Hot?

2011-12-23 Thread N4CW
When I operated the OL-OK RTTY DX contest, I ran the KPA at 300 Watts
output. The fan would generally
go up three steps when I was running 'em, and the temperature got into the
60's. The fan was a little loud, but tolerable with earphones on. But
today, I had occasion to need the amp to complete a QSO with a DX station on
20.
I ran 150 Watts output and my transmissions were no more than 3 minutes
long. Yet, every time I was transmitting a minute or so, the fan would kick
in, and it stepped up three or four times by the time I was finsished. Now
THAT was loud! Plus, the top rear of the amp was quite warm. Exhaust from
the fan was warm, too!

I didn't have the presence of mind to check the temperature today.

Any ideas? Has anybody else had this experience?

[Elecraft] P3 - Power up glitches with K3

2011-12-23 Thread Phil Westover
I've got a P3 connected to my K3 with all the proper connections.

K3 info:
s/n 1206
Firmware: MCU 4.36, DSP 2.73, Flash Parameters 1.14
P3 info:
s/n 1490
Firmware: 1.09

When I first hooked up the P3 a few months ago, I set the jumpers (and
connected a power cable) to power it up from the K3. At that time, I got
immediate connection and immediate talking between the P3 and the K3.
Frequency and filter width showed up correctly immediately at power up.

After a couple of months, it appears to not immediately 'talk' with the K3
upon power up. Sometimes no frequency nor filter bandwidth are displayed.
Sometimes frequency is displayed, but no filter bandwidth. Sometimes the
bandwidth shows up and is shifted off the right. In all cases, I can
manually power down the P3 and toggle it back up, and all those things
eventually show up properly. Sometimes it takes several on-off toggles (5
or more). In one instance, it didn't come up after several toggles, then
about 10 minutes later they started talking correctly.

Cables are tightly attached. There is no movement to the rigs during use.
This appears to be software related, not mechanical.

Ideas?

Software doesn't age over time. It could be a problem with pin
contact resistance. You can clean the connector pins off and see if
this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - Power up glitches with K3

2011-12-23 Thread Alan Bloom
Hi Phil,

It does take several seconds for the K3 to initialize the P3 at power up
but if some parameters are not getting initialized it must be a hardware
problem with the serial interface. It sounds like you have already
confirmed that the locking screws on both ends of the serial cable are
tight. If you have a spare cable you might try that. Another
possibility is a bad KIO3 board in the K3. Some units have a marginal
negative power supply that can affect signal integrity. If you can
borrow another K3, you could temporarily substitute it to tell if the
problem is with the K3 or P3.

I would contact Elecraft support to see what they recommend.

 Ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] Problems with knobs

2011-12-23 Thread VK7JB
My K3 is serial #5102 purchased in January 2011. My VFO B knob has just
cracked: it's spontaneously developed ugly linear fissures across the face
of the knob. The cracks begin nowhere near the screw hole. There are two
cracks. The rig has spent its life in an internal room with no UV exposure.

I emailed Elecraft and the response was perfect, as usual: a replacement
knob was in the mail less than a day after I'd made email contact with the
parts department.

This is the first/only report of a cracked VFO knob.

Such things happen - that's the nature of matter and entropy. What's
important to me is the great response from Elecraft. That's why I buy from
them.

Thanks Richard Co.
