My guess is that the answer to that would be yes, since it already
exists as the very first item in the chart of K3 menu options.

"2 Tone -- Enables built-in 2-tone generator for SSB transmit tests."

A 2-tone test is already built into the K3, Matt. I'm afraid it's a case
of RTFM.

Enter the Config menu and look for 2 TONE

Re: [Elecraft] Tuning AL-811H

2012-01-19 Thread Sandy
If you are interested in doing the job totally "right" when using SSB, the
only way to be assured of good linearity in the amplifier, is to use a
two-tone test oscillator fed into the audio input and a monitor oscilloscope
that gives a trapezoidal test pattern. Yes, I know a lot of people use a
CW carrier to do that and are successful at least some of the time. It is
easy to mistune this way and NOT get good linearity and maximum `PEP output
however. This degrades your signal and often times may disturb QSO's up or
down the band with non-linearity products.

Cheapest test scope used to be the Heathkit SB-610 which has a built in 2
tone test oscillator. I think Yaesu and Kenwood also made these as well.
Once you get used to the procedure it is easy and fast and assures a very
clean and potent signal.

I have a question about tuning an AL-811H amplifier with my K3. When I
used my FT-857D in the shack, I would tune to the antenna in FM mode.
However, I don't have the FM filter on my K3. I tried tuning the amp
using AM, but I don't have that filter either. So, what is the best
mode to use that allows me to briefly transmit an uninterrupted carrier
so I can get this amp set up and the settings written down? BTW, after
going through this, the saving for the KPA500/KAT500 will soon begin.

Thanks everyone for the assist.

Re: [Elecraft] Internet RFI Issue

2012-01-19 Thread Sandy
This effect JUST might be the cause of my problems too. I am using Charter
cable too and Wi-Fi from the shack to the master bedroom across the house.
I also suspect too many "g" Wi-Fi protocol users on the very limited number
of channels may be wrecking things at non-descript times! QRM if you will
on the 2.5 Ghz. Wi-Fi band!

If and when I can, I intend eventually getting an "n" protocol access point,
installing a CAT 5 cable from the ham shack in adjacent building thru the
attic to over the master bedroom and placing the access point in the attic
space. If THAT is my primary problem, that should fix it! I hope!

Give us a report when they get it sorted out Ron!

Since so many Hams today depend upon their internet connection in the
"shack" I thought this might be of interest.

A few weeks ago I started losing my internet service in the evenings. I have
a Charter cable connection that had provided consistent >20 MBs downloads
and >4 MBs upload speeds until then. Suddenly I was faced with evening
download rates of 1 or 2 MBs and uploads of a couple of KBps - not enough to
keep e-mail POP servers from timing out on short text messages! The next
day everything was back to normal.

I called Charter and they had a tech out to my place a couple of hours
later. He showed me the spectrum plots of my internet signal over a number
of days. Many evenings a huge surge of noise appeared that killed the S/N
ratio.

He explained that they've had to chase a number of these down in recent
months. He said that it is often caused by a TV set with a direct internet
connection for watching streaming programming. He explained that poor design
causes some TVs to inject huge noise levels into the cable connection,
apparently when the cable connection is not in use so the owner never
notices it. They've had to track down a number of them in this area.

He made some adjustments to increase my signal levels to help offset the
effect of the high noise levels, and said they'd have a team searching all
the node connections in the evenings to find the offender.

It's something to consider if your operating is interrupted by poor internet
service from a cable connection, especially during "prime time" hours. A
slower connection may not be simply a heavily loaded system. Indeed, I've
yet to notice any "system loading" my service.

Re: [Elecraft] Tuning AL-811H

2012-01-19 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ian,

That is because you are using the paddle input. Use the Hand Key
input. If you do not have a hand key, get yourself a 1/4 inch stereo
plug - connect one wire to the tip and another to the shell - on the
other end of those wires, put a pushbutton, or a toggle switch or
whatever you desire to use - in any case, shorting the two wires
together will cause the K3 to transmit in CW mode.

As has been mentioned already, you can also use TUNE, and there is a
menu item to set the TUNE POWER should you choose to do that.

Re: [Elecraft] Clear Plexiglas Case for W1 wattmeter

2012-01-19 Thread Dave Van Wallaghen
Hi Glenn et al,

That would be me. Here is the link to my website:
http://w8fgu.home.comcast.net

Just select the Mini-Module Enclosure tab and you'll see the enclosures
I make for the various Elecraft mini-module products.

Although I haven't updated my website in quite sometime, I also started
making enclosures for the other "test bench" modules i.e. XG2, NGen,
2T-Gen etc. Don Wilhelm W3FPR, helped me out with a design for them that
allows them to be stacked on top of each other when not in use to
utilize less footprint on the bench. I have a couple of days off coming
up, so I'll see if I can finally put something on the site about them.

If you have any questions about any of my products, don't hesitate to
contact me through this email address.

And thanks to my friends who replied in my absence from the list in the
last couple of days ;-)

HNY to all and 73,
Dave W8FGU

[Elecraft] [K3]. 60m feature

2012-01-19 Thread Mike Rodgers
Something I just stumbled onto is I have 5 60m frequencies and a mars? In
memory. When I use the memories to change bands to get to 60m and hit
M-v to put it in vfo mode. If I or I suppose anyone has the fine/coarse set to
two decimals, turning vfo a will scroll thru the 60m channels just like it were
in memory mode. Neat.

Re: [Elecraft] Tracking down S9+ noise on 40M

2012-01-19 Thread Bill Hammond
My biggie was the dishwasher...documented here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ak5x/6595335923/in/photostream
Electronic motor control seems to be the latest QRN maker, or would Plasma TV's
win that award?...My noise was from DC to Daylight all bands S9. The P3 was
very handy in tracking this down.

With a AM radio the buzz will get louder the closer you are to the offending
device. BC radios usually have some null points off the end of the ferrite BC
antennas giving you some directivity. There are some tips in the ARRL RFI
3rd edition that are helpful, as well as the AC Power Interference Handbook by
Loftness, KB7KK. These are good reference books to have. A quick glance at
"The Handbook" index did not show RFI as a covered subject, but I may of missed
it.

Powering down the house is helpful but not if the offending device is on
batteries :)

Even if
not to get contrast
between the buttons and panel just to match for esthetics so it more closely
looks like the KPA500
was part of the set.. What color will they be on the KAT500?

I'd buy a new set for the KPA500 if they were offered.

Printers. They need to be **unplugged** and not just off.
My HP blasts a lot of noise on 40 when just "off".

Washing Machines, especiallly the new ones with micro
processors

Door bell transformers. Lots and lots of stories there.
 Google is your friend.

Outdoor Christmas lights although the season is over

Arcing/cracked power line insulators. See various QST
articles on how to track down and how to build an
Ultrasonic detectror. One of the best ones was designed by
Jim Hanson W1TRC (SK). Sometimes you can just stand
outside and hear them especially in wet/foggy wx.

Street Lights although they usually only manifest
themselves at night

Bad flourscent light fixtures

touch lamps

Neon Lights if you live in a more urban environment

Electric fenses if you live in a rual area

These are just a few that come to mind. Please do report

[Elecraft] KX3 Cover by Rose

2012-01-19 Thread stan levandowski
Just received my KX3 dust cover from Rose.

It's striking to hold this cover in my hand and suddenly realize just
how tiny this new "almost-equivalent-to-a-K3" radio is! I've seen the
pictures and the video but they don't make quite the impact that holding
this cover makes. It truly gets your attention!

Rose's workmanship, of course, is superb. It's clear that a lot of
extra work is involved with this KX3 cover. It arrived in a box instead
of an envelope because of its stiff, padded construction.

Now, if only my KX3 would arrive in time for my birthday on 2/19...

The issue is regarding setting a MAXIMUM output limit. for Legal or
Safety reasons!

In both cases - where accidental QRO could be consequential... Legally
or health-wise.

In my case, I limit max power for my children's sake! In JA and UK's

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3 amp] 100/50

2012-01-19 Thread David Christ
I don't understand. With the K3/KPA500 there is no knob on the
KPA500 but if you want to change the power level you just turn the
power knob on the K3. The K3 can remember that level the next time
you return to that band if you wish. A power knob on the KPA500
would be redundant and superfluous.

If the KX3 and its amplifier are set up similarly, and I suspect they
will be, then there is no need for the control. And anyway, putting
that control on the amp would constrain where you could place the amp
in order to use the power control.

Does your issue arise because you want to use the amp with something
other than a KX3 and that other rig has no easy way to control its
output power?

Re: [Elecraft] Tracking down S9+ noise on 40M

2012-01-19 Thread Rich - K1HTV
And don't forget ELECTRIC BLANKETS! I just found the source of a loud noise
which appeared to be emanating from a neighbor's house. The noise source turned
out to be an electric blanket with independent control boxes and control units
(rotary controls). Each box was causing either a loud click every second or a
loud AC buzz when the electric blanket's control was set to call for more
heat. I took a portable Sony AM/FM/SW radio with me to the neighbor's house and
walked around the inside the house with him. At the far end of the house the
signal was moderately loud with the antenna collapsed while listening on 10
Meters. When we got to the master bedroom, the signal got noticeably louder.
Unplugging the AC from one box stopped one of the clicks/buzzes. Unplugging the
second box produced silence. In the bedroom, the noises could also be heard on
broadcast band frequencies, but were not very strongly in the AM BC band outside
the house.

The frequencies with the strongest signal from a noise source is often related
to the length of the wires attached to it. In this case, the signals seemed to
peak on higher frequencies in the 6M and 10M bands. In the case of a noisy power
line, where the wires are attached to arcing hardware are physically longer, you
can expect to have stronger signals on the lower frequencies. But even with
power lines, in addition to using an AM BC radio, it is often helpful to use a
portable radio that can tune in the 108-130 MHz AM aircraft band to find noise
sources on power line poles.

In your case, if you can hear the noise on a portable AM radio at the breaker
panel, try killing power to one breaker at a time to see which one kills the
noise. Good luck in playing noise detective!

[Elecraft] FS: K2/10 $750

2012-01-19 Thread TJ Campie
It has finally come time to list my beloved K2. It has served me well. My
K2 is a SN 4000+ model. It was built by Dale Parfit, W4OP. It has the
KAT2 ATU (built by me) and the KSB2 Sideband module (built by me). I will
also include the Icom hand mic that the rig is configured for. It also has
the FT100 knob and will include the original knob if it is wanted by the
buyer. I added an internal balun to the antenna 2 input which allows very
easy plug and play for balanced antennas. It can be configured to be 1:1
just by moving the input wires and re-soldering. I'll include a bit of
write up on how that should look. It can be removed if desired. I have
pictures of the mod for those interested. I also installed some nice flip
up feet on the front that are lower than the provided bail, they are just
removed by unscrewing them. I will include the factory bail as well.

In the sense of full disclosure, when assembling the SSB module, I did run
into a problem, I installed the wrong connector on the module (same sex as
the one on the board) and had to remove the one on the main board of the K2
which was very difficult and the board now is a bit "darker" in those
areas. Electrically the board is fine and the SSB module works great,
Elecraft uses very high quality PCBs so there should be no problems. Just
looks a bit wonky.

I am asking $750 which includes shipping and insurance to the US.
International folks can inquire for actual shipping costs. Price includes:
the radio, manual, original knob, FT100 knob, original tilt bail, flip up
feet, internal balun, power cable (with power poles), Icom hand mic,
internal test probe. Does not include the RF probe that came with the
kit. I think that covers it.

Thanks for looking. 73.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - noisy AF & RF Gain Controls

2012-01-19 Thread Don Wilhelm
Eric,

Yes, the most likely problem is a faulty pot on both the AF Gain and the
RF Gain.
You are probably referring to mention of the Alternate AF Gain Wiring
Mod. If your K2 serial number is greater than 3000, it is already
installed, but if your serial number is below that, you should change
the wiring of the AF Gain control.

That wiring change reduces the DC current flowing through the pot - and
that wiring change will *not* cure an already noisy pot, but it will
keep a good pot in good condition longer.

[Elecraft] K2 - noisy AF & RF Gain Controls

2012-01-19 Thread William Eric McFadden
Good day.

My Revision A K2 has noisy AF and RF gain pots. More precisely, turning
the AF gain pot produces scratchy audio and the turning the RF gain pot
causes the audio to drop out momentarily.

I've heard that the sort of behavior I'm seeing/hearing with the AF gain
pot isn't necessarily caused by a faulty pot; if this is the case, which
mod should I install before I think about replacing the pot?

Is the RF gain issue probably due to a failing pot?

[Elecraft] [KX3 amp] 100/50

2012-01-19 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Rick,

May be a bit off-topic here.

I have no idea of how KPA500 sales volume compared with other competitors.  My
choice of KPA500 is due to its ability of being portable and I don't need full
1kw in my apartment operation condition.

My original intention is to get a SPE-1ka expert where is only slightly less
than US$4000 here in VR2.  I consider SPE-1Ka is very value for money in my
prospective (or in terms of $/watt) and also fulfill the ability to be
portable.  However, I am using hamstick in a high rise apartment so that it is
no way to operate full 1kw.  Therefore, I drop idea of SPE-1ka.  Bearing in
mind, the total cost of Elecraft amplifier should be KPA500 + KAT500.

For similar reason, I sold my Icom ICPW-1 which was a strong work horse.  The
sales proceed of my PW1 will be very much enough for me to buy any 500w linear
amplifier.

The strengthen of JPY does give hard hit to Japanese manufacturer.  In terms of
US$, street price of ICPW1 has been increased from US$3,900 to US$5,000 solely
due to the rise of JPY.  Bearing in mind, ICPW1 delivers full 1kw RTTY.

Business culture of US and Japanese is different.  Both cultures have its own
successful history depending on when and where.  In the early days of my
business school in the universities, Just-in-time (no stock of spare parts) was
given high regard.  Toyota has been a succesful example of Just-in-time.
However, after the tsunami last year, most Japanese manufacturers exactly died
on the hands of Just-in-time.

Hong Kong is some how a link between western and eastern culture.  We are
hugely influenced by the British in terms of western ideas and at the same time
have our own eastern values.  We are lucky enough to learn the good / bad of
both cultures.  The composition of my radio shack fully reflect this.  I have
the big ICOMs as station radios.  K3 is for portable  and QRV to outline
islands - the smallest radio with true dual receivers.  The forthcoming KX3
will be used as a man pack radio.  Lastly, I have a US$30 Chinese H/T for
casual use.

Under digital mode, NUE-PSK modem is my choice for PSK31.  SCS pactor 3 modem
is for airmail and winlink.

I'm not worried.  WHEN, (not IF) Elecraft sales volume exceeds the JA
manufacturers,
Wayne and Eric will have trained people to take care of customers.  They don't
do
everything themselves today.  They have great employees who work the same way
they do.
It's part of their culture, it's been that way from the start.

But that day might already be here Johnny.  How does the sales volume of
KPA500s compare
with that of competing solid state amps?  You think the production line of JA
amps just
"might" have been scaled back in the past 6 months ? !

[Elecraft] [KX3 amp] 100/50

2012-01-19 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Rick,

To be fair, if the sales volume of elecraft products is in line with those
major Japanese ham radio manufacturers, it will be very difficult for both
Wayne and Eric to maintain the existing response time.

Of course, as a customer, I appreciate very much the service level offered by
Elecraft.

Hi Atsu,  Do you get 41 minute response from the chief designer at your local
radio manufacturers?  !!!

No committees, no design review, no marketing studies, no cost/benefit
analysis, just customer satisfaction.
Or maybe Wayne IS all the above - he just did it in the 41 minutes.

That would be good, since the intermediate license in the UK limits ops to 50w
too. A great way to buy a good rig for the future and remove the link when they
get the full license.

I have to agree with Jim, I tune the same way too - knobs are superb afaic and
I'd rather spend my money on more Elecraft kit :-)
