[Elecraft] K2 new build issue
Hello all, I'm in the process of building a K2 and have run into and unexpected result. I have just completed phase 2 of the build and I'm doing the testing and alignment. Specifically, I was performing the PLL Reference Oscillator Range Test. The following results are what I got. Ref.High Freq = 12091.16 Ref.Low Freq = 12086.74 Range = 4.42 The documentation says that the range isn't correct, should be between 9.8 and 15 khz. The doc says to go to troubleshooting, but doesn't really explain what could be wrong or where exactly to go in the trouble shooting. Can anyone guide me with I'm dealing with here. From a newbie and definitely not a radio expert. Re: [Elecraft] K2 new build issue
Yes, I can assure you that range is not enough, and also I can say that the high frequency is too low. It would seem you have too much capacity in the circuit, or the DAC voltage is not going high enough. The first thing you should measure is the voltage at RF Board U6 pin 1 while in CAL FCTR - the voltage should be near 8 volts when you tap the BAND+ button and drop to near zero volts when you tap the BAND- button. If that is not the case, let us know and we can trace it to the source of the problem. If the above check passes, then check the values of C84 and C85 (both should be 120pF - marked 121) And be certain you used the correct varactors at D16 (MV209) and D17 (1SV149) - D17 should be much thinner than D16 when you look straight down at the board. Be certain D18 is oriented correctly. Check the soldering too - re-flow the soldering with a hot (750 deg F) iron. Refer to sheet 1 of the RF Board schematic to identify the components involved. They are at the left side of the diagram to the left of TP3 and as far down as the schematic of the Thermistor Board. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/16/2012 12:05 PM, Earl Richardet wrote: Hello all, I'm in the process of building a K2 and have run into and unexpected result. [Elecraft] K3 TX delay
Sort of following this thread as I use a sequencer+inhibit on VHF+ (with transverters and following amplifiers). With my sequencer delaying K3 RF for about 300ms there is no issue. QSK not used on CW (of course). My QRO coax relays would not like But I am finishing my 300w HF amplifier kit and will be using a dc open-frame relay for TR switching of RF. I guess I can time it using my dual trace scope and set K3 TX DLY accordingly (amp will be keyed with KEYOUT). I do not use CW very much on HF so QSK with 300w is not necessary (or probably possible). I can always run the K3/10 in QRP-QSK, of course. There is one thing I do not see being addressed in this discussion. Maybe more important than clipping of CW characters is avoiding QRO Hot Switching of RF. Calculate the RF voltage for several thousand ohms impedance (open circuit) that will result if the amp is pumping out globs of RF before being connected to a good load. The relay contacts will definitely get burned big time. And maybe your output devices will have a short live-span. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 50-1.1kw?, 144-1.4kw, 432-QRT, 1296-?, 3400-? I should elaborate: I am now running one fully loaded K3 in my station. I am testing the RemoteRig RRC within my LAN - I have only one K3 so I am controlling the station through the link using Ham Radio Deluxe i.e. on a computer. The setup has already been tested remotely, i.e. from outside - by the developer of RemoteRig using his K3 and works perfectly absolutely amazing to watch. I am excited about the K3/0 it offers the perfect solution since I have no intentions of putting up any antennas at my second QTH and I will be away from my station for extended periods. 73 Thor, TF4M http://tf4m.com/ http://tf4m.com/ -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-0-tp7291926p7292032.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Thor, Elecraft was hoping to have the K3/0 on the web site last week, and they apologized about missing last week, and they now hope it is this week. I am fortunate in that I have two K3's, one at my remote site and one locally at home. When Elecraft came out with the firmware to link the two, well, I felt like a 5 year old year. I had the total control of the K3 remote. I had been using HRd and TRX. Nice programs, but hard to beat twisting the knobs. Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500 Headset
My one-and only problem with my CM-500 is that after a couple of months, the 1/8 stereo plug on the headphones became intermittent on one side. I cut off the existing plug and tried to solder on a 1/4 stereo plug. It wasn't easy. The problem is that each side of the cable contains two conductors (stereo, right?) The tricky part is that the signal sides are colored and, so far as I can tell, must be coated with some sort of insulating material to keep them from shorting to the bare common conductors. That coating takes some heavy-duty heating and tinning to get a solderable end on the wires. It can be done, and the headset is emphatically worth it, but it's harder than it looks at first. 73, Pete N4ZR The World Contest Station Database, updated daily at www.conteststations.com The Reverse Beacon Network at http://reversebeacon.net, blog at reversebeacon.blogspot.com, spots at telnet.reversebeacon.net, port 7000 and arcluster.reversebeacon.net, port 7000 On 2/16/2012 2:28 PM, Oscar Staudt wrote: The plug that comes on the microphone works just fine on the rear K3 plug. Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500 Headset
Hi Pete, Yamaha will replace your headphones if they are within the one year warranty period. It will not be necessary to return the defective headset. You would just have to e-mail or fax a copy of your receipt. The customer service phone number is: 714-522-9000 (PST). If it is past warranty it might be helpful to speak to them anyway. I had a head band failure and received a replacement. For those with Heil headsets, I sold my Proset K2 (originally purchased from Elecraft) on eBay. I listed it starting at $1 and had quite a few bidders before it concluded at $106 plus shipping. 73, Mike K2MK Pete Smith N4ZR wrote My one-and only problem with my CM-500 is that after a couple of months, the 1/8 stereo plug on the headphones became intermittent on one side. Which is exactly why one should always use a pre-determined common frame of reference. In the fire service, it wasn't left flank of the fire, it was the [N/S/W/E] flank. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Status?
Well said! I think that the suspense goes to show what kind of products Elecraft puts out. They are instant classics and carry with them a prestige all their own. If they weren't in that category the delay wouldn't be such a big deal to everyone. I'd be curious how many hams are out there chomping at the bit along with us for the KX3 HI. Though the suspense is crazy I trust Elecraft is doing the best. A time delay is well warranted if it means one less bug (software or hardware) for us to deal with. Rob K6RB I ordered a Yamaha CM500 headset through Amazon for my newly completed K3. They are really nice and comfortable. I have kind of larger ears and they completely cover my ears and don't bother my glasses. My ears hurt if I wear any headset that lays on my ears so these will be nice. The sound in the earphone is good. Will be testing the mic later this afternoon. $59.95 from Amazon.com. I think this is a bit more than others have paid but I got free shipping. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 low voltage on start
Cary, You use a Dryer plug! While that is overkill for the KPA500, it is definitely OK. If you cut the 120 volt end off the power cable, you will have a white, a black and a green conductor. The white and the black wires should connect to the hot 240 volt connectors in your plug, and the green wore should connect either to the neutral or the ground connection (depends on whether your dryer plug is a 3 conductor or a 4 conductor). Actually, if you mix the neutral and live, you will end up with 120 volts, so I presume you have some different problem. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/16/2012 7:03 PM, Hunsdon Cary III wrote: Just finished my build and it went together beautifully. Robert, The K3 manual (or other communications) tell you not to change the toroid spacing - unless you are explicitly directed to do so by Elecraft support. Just put the boards in - follow the instructions and enjoy the K3. Those boards are tested and optimized for performance at Elecraft prior to shipping. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/16/2012 7:29 PM, Robert G. Re: [Elecraft] K3 toroid windings
Back in ancient times when radio receivers were filled with L/C filters with adjustable trimmer caps to align all of the stages, it wasn't uncommon for some people to dig into their radio to try to fix it themselves. When the failed they'd bring it into the repair shop where often they'd mention that all of those little screws were loose so they tightened them, but it didn't help. Those screws were, of course, the carefully adjusted trimmer capacitors. Re: [Elecraft] K3 TX delay
But I am finishing my 300w HF amplifier kit and will be using a dc open-frame relay for TR switching of RF. I guess I can time it using my dual trace scope and set K3 TX DLY accordingly (amp will be keyed with KEYOUT). I do not use CW very much on HF so QSK with 300w is not necessary (or probably possible). Even if you use PTT CW and set TX delay for 20 ms you will get choppy CW There is one thing I do not see being addressed in this discussion. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 The entire topic stems from the fact that I wanted to avoid hot switching of the external relays (linear amp, stack switching etc). To acheave that I have tried to increase TX delay and got choppy CW. So without external sequencer there is a choise between the two - 'hot switching' or 'choppy cw'. 73. Re: [Elecraft] K3 TX delay
I fail to understand why anyone who is using PTT switching would want to set the TX DLY parameter to greater than the default of 8 ms. Use PTT and a footswitch if you are using a slow amp relay. If your amplifier uses a slow relay, then you really cannot use QSK, so just use PTT and a footpedal instead - things will work out much better. There are QSK mods available for amplifiers that use slow relays. Some mods are relatively inexpensive (the owner does the work), while other can cost upwards of $400 (purchase a commercial version). 73, Don W3FPR On 2/16/2012 11:05 PM, Igor Sokolov wrote: But I am finishing my 300w HF amplifier kit and will be using a dc open-frame relay for TR switching of RF. But coincidentally, we heard about another customer using two K3s on 160 m (Tom, W8JI). Tom decided to hunt for the source of clicks himself, with a little advice from yours truly.
