[Elecraft] [K3] short circuit at power terminals

2012-10-19 Thread Lewis Phelps
Yikes! My reliable K3-10 has developed a short circuit across the power input
terminals. Well, to be exact, not quite a dead short. It measures 0.6 ohms
across the PowerPole connectors. It most certainly does blow fuses on the input
line.

Any suggestions for trouble shooting? And also for a possible cause of the
problem?

[Elecraft] K3 Parts transfer between rigs

2012-10-19 Thread Ham Radio
I embarked on a project to move parts from one K3 to another and I got the rigs
back from my tech elmer tonight. After getting the K3s home, I decided to
follow the procedure to get them operating again.

I had my tech elmer transfer the KAT3, KRX3, KDVR3 and KBF3 from one of the K3
to the other. I now have multiple errors and not sure what is going on. The
first receiver works well and I loaded the filters fine. However, when I went
to load the second receiver and run the synthesizer calibration I received
multiple errors.

E020202 E027979 - ERR DSE
E5 ERR VCO
E000255 ERR VC4
ERR PL2

When I went to install the DSP2 using the utility program I received these
errors.

DSP 2 verification error
Error code OXE2046

I reviewed the manual and it says that I have a DSP Echo. The VCO and VC4
error may suggest my friend installed the cables incorrectly. Pretty bummed
right now. Any additional thoughts would be very welcome.

Thanks,

Keith

[Elecraft] Vedr: Resistor networks, polarized?

2012-10-19 Thread Martin Storli - LA8OKA
You can remove the resistor pack by using heated solder on all the pins on one
side. (You need to be fast!)
Heat up one side with the soldering iron and apply lot of solder, the solder
works as a heat distributor, losen one side, and do the same on the other side,
use solder wick after to remove all the solder from the PCB and the resistor
pack.

Hello,

I am building the KSB2 tonight, and I put a resistor network the wrong way..
Aren't these just resistors? Why would there be a pin 1? Should I remove it?
If so, how do I do that? I have solder wick, tried, but it isn't budging…

Thanks,

Keith,

You can download the assembly manual for the K3 from
http://www.elecraft.com/K2_Manual_Download_Page.htm#K3 and open up the
rig and check for errors. It's tedious, but not difficult. Or take it
back to uncle Elmer and make him do it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Parts transfer between rigs

2012-10-19 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Keith,

This type of transplant takes more preparation then meets the eye. For
example, the Sub RX also includes the addition of a KSYN3 board and an AUX
DSP board. Forgetting to install either of those two boards could create
some of errors you are seeing. Then there are other things to check and/or
change on the existing K3 boards. Similarly, the donor K3 might have to have
some things unchanged once this handful of parts has been removed.

If the Elmer didn't fire up the rigs after the swap then perhaps he was just
supplying skilled labor and he was relying on you to do all of the research.

Mike K2MK

Did your tech elmer just do the unplugging/replugging job or did he

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] short circuit at power terminals

2012-10-19 Thread Dale Boresz
Hello Lewis,

I experienced this same issue once, and the problem ended up being the
Transil diode D28 on the main pc board, near the 12 vdc power input
connection. It is a large diode, and I believe it's purpose in life is
to protect against excessive input voltage. It should begin to draw
current when the voltage goes too high, and that should blow the
resettable fuse F1. In my case, I was running the power supply voltage
at about 15.0 vdc, and I suspect that my particular diode may have had a
slightly lower threshold than normal, and was probably drawing current
and dissipating power, though not enough to blow the F1 fuse -- until it
failed completely by short circuiting. (This is just a guess; The
replacement that I received from Elecraft has been working fine though.)

If you can, try measuring the resistance in both directions across diode
D28. To really prove it though, you'd need to lift at least one end of
that diode and then measure it.

Spec sheet on the diode:

http://www.st.com/internet/com/TECHNICAL_RESOURCES/TECHNICAL_LITERATURE/DATASHEET/CD0695.pdf

Best of luck with your troubleshooting.

[Elecraft] KPA500 LCD

2012-10-19 Thread zendoc
Hi Group,

Just getting to know my KPA500 which I finished assembling yesterday. What a
great amp.

I've noticed that when I turn on the rear power switch, the LCD backlight
blinks on for a fraction of a second, then turns off and stays off until you
hit the front ON switch.

Is this blinking at power on the same with all KPA500s?

Just curious,

Hi Keith,

You should review the KRX3 assembly/installation manual. There's a resistor
that may need to be modified (see page 21) and maybe some other stuff as
well.

I will also contact tech support to see what is going on with the error

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] short circuit at power terminals

2012-10-19 Thread Lewis Phelps
Thanks for the input. No, I haven't had the rig open in more than a year. It
hasn't moved from its current operating position in weeks.
 No rattling loose screws.

There is a strong possibility that the input was over-voltaged due to a short
in a separate piece of equipment that was powered from the same 12VDC buss. The
other item has both 12VDC and 24 VDC inputs, and it's possible that the 12V
line got bumped up to 24V. That would be consistent with Dale's description
of the issue. I will pull the cover off later this afternoon or tomorrow
morning and check the diode, and look for any obvious places where the smoke
has been let out of a component.

Thanks for the good feedback, guys.

Isolation of the problem: I had a phono jack on the back that lost

minor resistance differences to get close to the problem area and then found
2 of the phono jacks were soldered but no connection to ground. Wire bridge

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-19 Thread tom betka

Thanks to all who responded to my thread earlier this week. With your help
(especially Dwight, NS9I whose incredible shack I visited the other day), and
after a few conversations with David Shoaf at Elecraft, I have decided on a K3.
I finalized and placed the order today for the K3/100 unit, along with the
internal antenna tuner and the IF module so that I can use an LP-PAN and
external monitor. All that is left now is to arrange transfer of the funds, and
the thing should get shipped to me next week...with luck. I have a few things
to do on my end anyway, as I don't even have an antenna mounted yet. So it will
be a couple weeks before I am on the air anyway--but I'll get there soon
enough. I have waited 8-10 years to get back into HAM radio, so another
couple of weeks isn't the end of the world by any means.
On another note, I recently received a set of the Gordon West Extra Class
course materials, and have started studying for the upgrade. I've been studying
electronics for the past month or two anyway, so with any luck I'll get
prepared for the Extra class upgrade by the end of the year as well.
Anyway, just wanted to again say thanks for all the opinions rendered by you
folks. This newsgroup (reflector) is an excellent resource, and I plan to keep
hanging out and learning!

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] short circuit at power terminals

2012-10-19 Thread Fred Townsend
Lew, with a good digital ohm meter and 0.6 ohms of resistance you can
sometimes walk down the traces looking for a 0.0 (or as low as your test
leads measure) short. This doesn't always work since your problem may not be
a dead short but it is a simple starting point before going into more
advanced trouble shooting.

Luca,

That is not done internally in the K3. If that is a problem for you
(you do not have adequate isolation between your TX antenna and the

nicely.

[Elecraft] KPA500 input SWR in standby ...a question.

2012-10-19 Thread zendoc
Hi All,

Thanks for the messages about the power up LCD blink - it's the way it should
be.

Now another question: my KPA500 replaces an old AL811. I noticed, when I
connected the KPA500 in line, that the K3 SWR meter was giving slightly higher
than expected readings with the amp in standby. Given that nothing else in my
transmission chain had changed, other than swapping over the amps, I thought
this was strange. I also noted that my LP100 meter would show an SWR of 1.0:1
(on the rig side of my manual tuner) while the K3 meter would show an SWR of
1.2:1. The KPA500 SWR meter agrees with the LP100.

Looking at this, I put a dummy load on the output of the KPA500 and with the
amp in standby, I found that on 20m and above, the KPA500 input SWR is around
1.2:1 with a maximum of 1.3:1 on 6m, measured by an Antenna analyzer on amp's
input. Also, taking the amp out of line by physically disconnecting it and
using a coax barrel connector to join the input and output lines causes the K3
and LP100 meters to agree.

So, is this input SWR variation in standby mode, within spec for the KPA500?
I didn't see this with my AL811 in line, but then I'd carefully adjusted its
tuned inputs.

Please tell me I'm fly specing here and to stop obsessing :)

Cheers
JohnVK7JB

[Elecraft] K3 Sub receiver

2012-10-19 Thread Charles Stampf
Hi Folks,
I've been scratching my head for a couple weeks and finally decided to ask for

Is there a way to enter a frequency via the numerical keyboard to the

there is no way to use the Sub-receiver with the 2 K144-XV2 transverter.

Thanks for any help, this is a great forum and extremely helpful.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 input SWR in standby ...a question.

2012-10-19 Thread David Little

FWIW, below are my notes - from before I sent mine in for repair.

Something happened that caused an LDG AT-1000Pro to toast the protection
Diode, and an Icom IC-756 Pro 2 to burn one of the contacts off of the
antenna 1 / antenna 2 change over relay.

I had already taken the K3 out of line for unstable output before trying the
Pro II.

We found one of the drivers bad on the K3.

It is looking like the amp is common to all items that were affected.

I am in luck in that I can replace the driver on the K3, and the relay on
the Pro 2.

Dwayne at LDG will treat me right on the 1000Pro, so all I am really stuck
with so far is the $65.00 to ship and insure the LPA500 to Elecraft, and
whatever they find wrong, plus return shipping and insurance.

Here is what I wrote:

MFJ Analyzer shows (worse case at 50 MHz) 1.5:1 in standby and 1.1:1 in
operate with dummy load connected directly to amp output.

My problem is that the amp shows high SWR and REFL HI error whenever it is
keyed; no matter what the power or load or band.

I am guessing whatever went wrong with the amp sent a fair size spike out to
both the rig and external tuner.

If you are going to die, you may as well take a few with you :)

I will find out soon enough.

connected the KPA500 in line, that the K3 SWR meter was giving slightly
higher than expected readings with the amp in standby. Given that nothing
else in my transmission chain had changed, other than swapping over the
amps, I thought this was strange. I also noted that my LP100 meter would
show an SWR of 1.0:1 (on the rig side of my manual tuner) while the K3 meter
would show an SWR of 1.2:1. The KPA500 SWR meter agrees with the LP100.

Looking at this, I put a dummy load on the output of the KPA500 and with the
amp in standby, I found that on 20m and above, the KPA500 input SWR is
around 1.2:1 with a maximum of 1.3:1 on 6m, measured by an Antenna analyzer
on amp's input. Also, taking the amp out of line by physically
disconnecting it and using a coax barrel connector to join the input and
output lines causes the K3 and LP100 meters to agree.

So, is this input SWR variation in standby mode, within spec for the
KPA500? I didn't see this with my AL811 in line, but then I'd carefully
adjusted its tuned inputs.

Please tell me I'm fly specing here and to stop obsessing :)

Cheers
JohnVK7JB

[Elecraft] KX3 Hi-current warning at 5.0 watts on 6 meters

2012-10-19 Thread Mike
Has anyone seen a KX3 high current warning on 6 meters, but only at 5.0 watts?
4.8 5.2 watts are fine - just at 5.0 watts.

My setup: MCU 1.23, DSP 0.99, ATU in bypass, DL1 dummy load directly connected
via a double-male BNC, in CW or USB (haven't tested other modes). The display
shows a 1.4:1 SWR in bypass. With the ATU in auto, I get a 1.1:1 and no issues.

This isn't related to the lower-current PA mode, as that changeover occurs above
3.0 watts in USB. The error message appears independent of which current mode
the PA is in at 5.0 watts, depending on the transmission mode.

No other bands exhibit this.

It's not a problem, just a peculiar quirk.

Mike, KW1ND

[Elecraft] KPA500 input SWR in standby ...a question.

2012-10-19 Thread zendoc

Hi David Group,

I did find the spec for the input SWR in the manual - it's listed as 1.5:1,
so my amp is well within spec. I'm going to forget about it. I guess I'm used
to old tube amps with tuned inputs you could adjust on a per band basis. This
is my first SS amp, so I'm learning.

Sorry to hear about your troubles and I'm sure they'll soon be fixed.
Fortunately, my amp functions just fine and my SWR observations are symptomatic
of nothing other than my own obsessional nature.

Does anyone know the design reasoning behind using the twisted wire pair,
rather than coax, for the RF output connector on the KPA500? There must be
one, but I wondered what effect that would have, if any, on the impedance of
the RF path through the amp. The RF input connector is coax.

73,

John

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Sub receiver

2012-10-19 Thread K7MDL
The internal 2M transverter IF connects into the the Main receiver input
chain downstream of the Main/RX antenna switch. So it can only be used on
the Main receiver. In fact the ATT and Preamp works as normal as the whole
input side is pretty much connected.

I have other 2M transverters here and have at times hooked them up to the
alternate antenna input (ANT2) and it is routed to the Sub RX. The
advantage of this is it works with either receiver but with the XV144
external unit it does not cover the FM portion of the band and does not
benefit from the Reflock feature. With both transverters connected (with
separate antennas or RX only with splitter) I can monitor 2 ends of the band
at once and use the internal as the primary. I went further and brought
out to the back panel my ANT 2 internal connection to the SubRX and the
SubRX connection and normally have a coax jumper between them. I can pull
the jumper and insert any transverter (or RX splitter output) and not worry
about transmitting into it at high power. :-) I actually rarely use it but
it is there when I need it.

I see no way to enter frequency directly in Bset or other method than A/B
swapping.

- Mike
