Re: [Elecraft] Info 080 message started with RF Alignment and Test, Part II

2012-10-28 Thread AC8HU
I guess I said it wrong - I was referring to the VCO Test in Part 2 for the
RF Board. After the PLL Reference Oscillator Test, I changed bands to 80
meters and was about to adjust frequency to 4000.10 when the Info 080
message popped up again. As I stated, when using CAL FCTR the frequency I
found at this point (after the Info 080 message had appeared) was around
10800.00 - slightly above the 8 to 10 MHz range specified. However, it was
fairly stable.

After attempting another 456 reset this afternoon, the Info 080 message
persists, just like it did before, with the same 0.00 frequency reading,
and the same last character that looks like a 2 missing one segment (not a
c). Additionally, something I didn't mention before but had happened before
as well, when the Info 080 message appears at this stage, the LCD appears to
default, or revert, to the day setting - the green backlight goes out.

It just feels like a hardware issue to me, from what I've experienced with
computer troubleshooting in the past. The same exact problems appeared at
the same exact point in the tests...and everything else, test wise, had
worked fine up until this point. The problem for me is that I'm not nearly
knowledgeable enough about the circuits involved, or what individual
components in the circuits do, to know where the actual issue lies...

Just installed the P3SVGA option.
First impression on Acer LCD G226HQL (21.5) ist excellent.

I wonder now where/how to configure the K3 text decode function so the CR/LF
characters are maintained (not replaced by space character)???

[Elecraft] KAT500 anomaly this morning

2012-10-28 Thread Jim Sheldon
Woke up early and when I woke up the station, the KAT500 turned on when the P/S
turned on, but instead of being in AUTO where it was when I shut it off (yes, I
shut the KAT500 off first with the front panel button) it came up locked in
MANual and the mode button would NOT turn it off or cause it to do anything
else. No amount of button pushing in any combination would make it do anything
but sit there with it's one green light on and stare back at me.

Thinking there was a front panel board, holding the switches and LED's, that
might have come partially unplugged in shipping, I pulled the top cover - WOW
that is one nice looking board in there, but no front panel, everything is on
the main board and it's all soldered in and 99 percent (except for the relays,
MASSIVE toroids and air wound coils), surface mount. Nothing plug-in here.

Hooked up the RS-232 cable and ran the utility program. It would not
communicate with the tuner giving me a screen indicating that the KAT500 was
waiting for the power button or a firmware download and after a while would
timeout with the KAT500 not responding message.

Could find nothing in the manual that indicated how to force a firmware load,
so I in my banging mood, told the Utility program to install new firmware (I
had downloaded the current version from Elecraft), started pressing and/or
holding buttons in various combinations. Somewhere in all this, I managed to
hit on the right combination to force it to accept the firmware download from
the utility program and all is again well.

I have no idea what caused the glitch (cosmic rays, Boeing's EMP missile flying
over wichita, or Murphy crawling around in there), but it's apparently back up
and running. I'll keep an eye on it over the coming days (weeks, maybe if it
doesn't happen again) and try to find out what circumstances caused the
problem. Meanwhile, Elecraft (separate message will be sent to support),
PLEASE publish the RESET and FORCE FIRMWARE LOAD instructions where the casual
observer can find it. Having that info in the operating manual would have been
a HUGE help this morning.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] POWER control has no effect on actual transmit power

2012-10-28 Thread Mike K8CN
Ben,

It sounds like re-heating of the solder connections on both sides of C121 is
in order. The fact that your RF voltage on terminal 3 of T1 has the proper
ratio to that on terminal 1 implies that T1's solder joints are OK. The
absence of RF on the driver (Q6 base circuit) side of C121 could be due to a
very low impedance being presented there, but this would have been reflected
in a much lower voltage reading at terminal 3 of T1 ** if ** C121 was
properly connected.

I would hesitate to operate the transmitter without the heat sink attached
even for brief periods of time.

Good luck, and 73,

Mike, K8CN

Re: [Elecraft] Info 080 message started with RF Alignment and Test, Part II

2012-10-28 Thread Don Wilhelm
You have mentioned 4 problems now - the Info 080 problem, the LCD
backlight, a missing segment on the last character displayed, and a zero
frequency reading when doing the VCO test.

Neither of those problems are related to the other problems, so I
strongly suspect that your soldering is at fault. Check all your solder
connections against the figures in the soldering tutorial that can be
downloaded from the Elecraft website.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] POWER control has no effect on actual transmit power

2012-10-28 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ben,

When you have low output, it is normal for the RF voltages at the
working stages to be much greater than the listed expected values.

Since the Q5 output is higher than expected, but the Q6 input is zero
(or close to it), you have a problem between Q5 and Q6. Refer to the
schematic and check all components between those 2 stages. Normally I
would say that toroid T1 is the most likely problem, but since you said
the output RF voltage is 1/3 of the input RF voltage, I suspect
something else - check for solder bridges.

The only way you can do a TUNE or transmit without the heat sink
installed is to remove T3.

You are in for some Transmit Signal Tracing. Turn to appendix A in the K2
manual and do the steps indicated there.
Okay, did that. (Lacking a signal generator, I skipped the Receive tracing,
but I can try to find one and go back and do that if necessary.)

I did up through the ALC section successfully -- VPWR is 4.925. All
following values are measured with key-down.
RF probe values tend to be higher than expected -- for Xmit mixer, I get:
 2. Xmit Mixer Output: Expected 0.016 Vrms, actual 0.220
 3. Buffer Output: Expected 0.200, actual 1.52 (ratio is 6.9)
 4. Band-Pass Filter Output: Expected 0030, actual 0.046
 5. T-R Switch #1 Output: Expected 0.029, actual 0.032

 Pre-driver, Driver and PA
 1. Pre-Driver Output (Q5): Expected 0.120 Vrms, actual: 3.25 (or sometimes
 1. I checked this several times, I can't explain it)
 2. Driver Input (Q6) : Expected 0.026, actual 0
 3. Driver Output: Expected 1.8, actual 0

It seems that the Q5 output is way higher than expected, and then the driver
 input is almost zero.
I tried to trace the signal between Q5 and Q6 from the top of the board --
pin one of T1 is 3.25 or 1v, pin 3 is 1/3rd of that, and then that reduced
signal drops from 3.25v on one side of C121 to 0v on the other side of C121.
(Or at least, that's what it looks like from above the board -- is there any
way to safely run the radio with the heat sink removed and the transmitter
 on?)

 Cheers,
 Ben (KJ6ZGJ)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Problem

2012-10-28 Thread Lu Romero

Yes, I also agree that CMP 30 is a bit much. On my rig, the
open ragchew wide dynamic range setting is 18 and the in
your face contest compression punch setting is 24. Any
more than 25, and you start to reach the point of
diminishing returns in inteligibility. I use the Yamaha
Boomset here, so other mike's milage may vary.

Also, pay attention to the mic level setting, which is also
important. Both settings interact grately. Set the mic level
first, then add CMP to the mix. Not the other way around.

You shouldnt be afraid to light up all the lights on the
right side of the meter consistently with the last light
flickering with mod peaks. This is really an amazingly
clean audio chain we are working with. But as in everything,
too much of a good thing is often detrimental.

IMO, K3's audio processing chain seems to like consistent
input levels (still wish we could have attack and decay
handles for CMP, Lyle!). The more consistent the input, by
close talking, by keeping control of your voice, even if it
is a P5 pileup, by managing the overall gain of your audio
chain, and by keeping external noise down, the more
modulation density you will get from this radio without
sounding like something from Guns and Roses record.

Include me in that sentiment. I have several times
monitored my audio
while adjusting the compression. CMP=20 gives great audio
quality and
CMP=25 gives great contest audio. CMP=30 generates
significant audio
artifacts without any better intelligibility. In my
opinion, CMP above
30 merely adds trash to the bands.

[Elecraft] K3 Receive Sensitivity Consistency

2012-10-28 Thread David Little
When I turned the K3 on this morning, I decided to listen to 60m, to get
away from the contesting.

As I went through the bands from the 2 meg frequency I had been monitoring,
when it got to the 5 MHz band it seemed to be a bit deaf.

Volume was considerably lower, but signal on the P3 looked consistent with
the other bands.

Going into the Menu and bringing the Receive EQ to +16 on all 8 frequencies
did not restore the volume level.

Using the Band switch, toggling back down to 75m brought similar results;
lower receive level.

However when going back to the original 2 Meg frequency and manually tuning
up with the VFO, the sensitivity and volume remained consistent all the way
up to the 5 Meg freq that I was trying to monitor initially.

After that, going through the spectrum using the Band Select switch yielded
consistent results.

When using the VFO, I was looking for a magic relay click, or some crossed
frequency threshold that triggered a return to sensitivity, but there was no
degradation as long as I was going up the band with the VFO.

Serial Number 5063; Anyone else seen this before?

2012-10-28 Thread W5RDW
I don't want to belabor my problem (albeit a very minor one), but had the
K3/KPA500/P3 on for maybe an hour or so just tuning the band. I heard a
station on 17M SSB calling CQ and I answered him. Just like a few times
before, I saw only low power out (only K3 drive power to KPA500) at first. I
un-keyed for a second or so and then keyed up again and full power came out
of KPA500. BTW, I even went so far as doing the routine that Kent, K9ZTV had
detailed first when I turned everything on.

No big deal here, but just an observation of what happens on occasion. I
made another few Q's and everything was responding like expected. I am going
to conclude this is an minor anomaly I can live with for now and truck on!

Going to drive down to Array Solutions tomorrow to pick up a new play toy,
so I will have my hands full then!

David,

Check your PRE and ATT setting on 60m compared to your other bands. I

 Using the Band switch, toggling back down to 75m brought similar results;
 lower receive level.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Receive Sensitivity Consistency

2012-10-28 Thread David Little

Preamp, Attenuator, ATU, AGC were all checked before determining that the
audio on 60m was lacking.

The levels on the P3 were also checked to aid in determining the problem.

RX EQ was all maxed out in able to overcome the inherit audio attenuation
when the EQ settings are moved off of +16.

My guess is that it seems to be firmware related, and for now, the problem
has been cleared out of the processors scratch pad memory, and may not show
up again.

Thanks,

David

Re: [Elecraft] OT - 32 or 64 bit Windows 7

2012-10-28 Thread Brian Hunt
The only issue I had was getting the computer/rig interface working. My
old computer had a real serial port so it was my first experience in
USB/serial adapters. The one with the FTDI chipset worked fine with
Win7 drivers. I never could find a Win7 driver that would work with the
older Prolific chipset adapter. YMMV.

There is a Windows XP compatibility mode you can set in the
application's Properties dialog that helped me with a few of my older
apps (not ham radio related). I've also heard mentioned some erratic CW
being sent via N1MM due to USB timing issues but I haven't experienced
it myself.

I'm not sure that any of these are 32 vs 64 bit OS issues, however. Good
luck!

[Elecraft] K3 and sticking amp T/R relay

2012-10-28 Thread Gary Smith
My newly acquired 30 year old amp comes with QSK. As there was a
different relay than came stock I have to assume the circuitry may
have been altered in the past. I have no way to know this.

After two weeks of normal amp behavior I found the T/R vacuum relay
had locked in the transmit position. A gentle tap on the NO terminal
released it and function is back to normal. Mostly normal as I do
find the ALC idiot light is no longer illuminating and the grid
metering response appears attenuated but the amplifier puts out full
power with absolutely no difficulty in that 35W drive gives 1500 out
to the LP-100A watt meter.

My question for here is; if the amp is not properly sequencing with
the K3, what setting can I change within the K3 to provide more time
for the amp's relays to close before the K3 transmits? I remember
there was a feature to allow ms changes for QSK in the K3. How do I
find that option? And should I decrease the MS time in the K3 or
increase it to let the perhaps relay in the amp have time to close
first to avoid hot switching?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Problem

2012-10-28 Thread Edward R Cole
I run COMP=20 on my K3 with a Heil HM10-5 desk mic (older model I
bought in 1998 with wide freq element). Get great audio reports on
SSB on either HF or 2m-SSB. I have only modified Tx equalization for
three lowest audio freq bands as mainly running conversational
operating on a couple HF Nets and most operating is VHF+.

I checked my COMP on the KX3 and it is only set to 8 with the MH3
hand-mic. On FM I had reports of overdeviation so lowered mic gain
to 15. SSB mic level appears to work at that level without complaint.

My TX DLY setting is 015. If I've got it this high and I still had a

Re: [Elecraft] K3-PR10

2012-10-28 Thread Edward R Cole
Sorry - catching up on reading posts that I missed while traveling last week.

I have a 6m preamp from another mfr on my K3, but would consider a
PR10/6 combined preamp, if offered. At present I only have a single
6-element 6m yagi pointed toward US West Coast (az=115) so no issue
with the 6m band.

I will be adding a 1100w 6m PA and QRO antenna relay so the 6m preamp
input will no longer connect thru the K3. I hope reinstall my
repaired 3-elem 6m yagi fixed toward the NE from tower#2 at 45-foot
so a second preamp would work well if it also would work on 10m
(Hygain TH3mk4). The K3 ANT1 connects thru a couple manual coax
switches for all other bands/amps/tuners/antennas.

Next summer I hope to install tower#3 (30-foot) for the 6m 6-elem
yagi which is for meteor scatter and eme work. I recently obtained a
used rotator for that project. I had to remove my two stacked 3-elem
6m yagis this summer as the upper antenna director came loose and
unreachable from the tower. I am redesigning and adding a 11-elem 2m
FM yagi bolted to the tower at 45-feet (no rotator). Lower 6m yagi
never tuned correctly and will be sold (cheap).

Winter temps may affect these plans (currently 19F).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and sticking amp T/R relay

2012-10-28 Thread Gary Smith
It's an old Alpha of the 77DX/SX clan. Unfortunately there's nobody I
know of around here that knows these amps it's too heavy to ship so
I'll have to do my best and amp repair/schematic wrangling is not my
strong point. There is a Kilovac relay in there and Alpha always used
jennings so someone has been into that section and I can't tell by
looking at it if modifications have been made other than to put in a
different relay. The HC-1 Kilovacs were as I recall a drop in part
for the Jennings RJ1A. It seemed to work fine at QSK but if the
sequencing is wrong it could hot switch. I'd love to have PIN diodes
if I had an ideal SWR, nothing like totally silent keying. Since they
do suffer the SWR gremlins, I have no wish for them in any amp.

Maybe I should move the K3 delay to 20ms for the time being.

Gary
KA1J

 Hi Gary,

A vacuum relay you say? They are supposed to be fast (like 8 ms) but
the old amp might delay its closure for some other reasons. The
ACOM-1000, ACOM-2000 and ALPHA 86 use a vacuum relay and do QSK.
Guys curse ALPHA87A PIN diodes which at $80 each (multiple ones used)
pop if too high an SWR is encountered. They are a bear to physically
get at. So relays are good..

What kind of 30 year old amp?

Vacuum relays do indeed fail and contacts get sticky. It might be a
 replacement is all you need.

Hope you suffer no ill effects from Sandy. It turned out to be a
non-event here on the S side of the NC/VA border about 75 miles from the
 coast.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and sticking amp T/R relay

2012-10-28 Thread Mel Farrer
Just a couple comments from one long in the tooth.  Vacuum relays will last
forever if switch unloaded, that is no RF current flowing.  I have built many
industrial power sources and never replaced a vacuum relay, UNLESS, the control
sequence failed and allowed either power to be applied before the switch was
closed or while the RF current was still flowing.  Answer, VERY careful
sequence keying even in QSK will let the relays last forever.  While replacing
the relay do a dry logic check of the keying sequence in time. Make sure you
don't have a horse race to failure.   IMHO.  Cheers,

It turned out to be a
non-event here on the S side of the NC/VA border about 75 miles from the
 coast.

anything.

locked in MANual and the mode button would NOT turn it off or cause it to do
anything else. No amount of button pushing in any combination would make it
do anything but sit there with it's one green light on and stare back at me.

Thinking there was a front panel board, holding the switches and LED's, that
might have come partially unplugged in shipping, I pulled the top cover - WOW
that is one nice looking board in there, but no front panel, everything is on
the main board and it's all soldered in and 99 percent (except for the
relays, MASSIVE toroids and air wound coils), surface mount. Nothing plug-in
 here.

Hooked up the RS-232 cable and ran the utility program. It would not
communicate with the tuner giving me a screen indicating that the KAT500 was
waiting for the power button or a firmware download and after a while would
timeout with the KAT500 not responding message.

Could find nothing in the manual that indicated how to force a firmware load,
so I in my banging mood, told the Utility program to install new firmware
(I had downloaded the current version from Elecraft), started pressing and/or
holding buttons in various combinations. Somewhere in all this, I managed to
hit on the right combination to force it to accept the firmware download from
the utility program and all is again well.

I have no idea what caused the glitch (cosmic rays, Boeing's EMP missile
flying over wichita, or Murphy crawling around in there), but it's apparently
back up and running. I'll keep an eye on it over the coming days (weeks,
maybe if it doesn't happen again) and try to find out what circumstances
caused the problem. Meanwhile, Elecraft (separate message will be sent to
support), PLEASE publish the RESET and FORCE FIRMWARE LOAD instructions where
the casual observer can find it. Having that info in the operating manual
would have been a HUGE help this morning.

[Elecraft] KX3 in the Appalachian Mountains

2012-10-28 Thread Steve KC8QVO
I took my KX3 with me this weekend in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

http://s118.beta.photobucket.com/user/KC8QVO/media/Backpacking%20Stuff/IMG_0478.jpg.html

The picture is catching the sun rise at the Clingmans Dome parking area just
before we hiked to the observation tower to start our trek along the
Clingmans Dome portion of the Appalachian Trail (a bit over 3 miles). Along
with me was a Yaesu hand mic, Sony earbud headphones, a jumper dipole
(40-6m), and a solar panel to keep the NiMh AA batteries up. The whole radio
set up was right about 5lbs. This is a world of difference from my FT-857D
(about 15lbs trail weight without the solar panel).

There was a contest going on this weekend and the CW portion of 40 meters
was clogged with SSB so I wasn't able to make any contacts. The next morning
I didn't have a whole lot of time to get the radio going. We ate breakfast
and broke camp.

We started out on top of Clingmans Dome and hiked down Sugarland Mountain.
We were going to hike back up to Clingmans over the next two days, but I
hurt myself and we were only 3000 feet in to a 4000 foot decent (then still
had to make it all back up) so we called it quits and hiked back out to the
road and got a ride. We dropped 3000ft in about 12 miles (a lot of it was up
and down, not all down) the first day and 2 miles down another 1000ft (some
up and down too) on the second day.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB audio problem(an update)

2012-10-28 Thread George Winship, NC5G
After some extensive on the air testing with my Son, this is what we have
found.
One by one I eliminated pieces of equipment starting with the KPA500, then
the KAT100, followed
by removing the KPA100 from the K2, then changing power supplies, hooking
the basic K2 to the 2.5A ps
that I power the KX3 with. This ps is about 3ft. from the K2 on the floor,
under the desk. In this configuration, the audio was clean. Even though not
connected, I turned the KPA500 on(which is about 4 inches from the right
side of the K2) and this introduced some small artifacts which would suggest
that the VCO mod would be worthwhile.

Following this, I reinstalled the KPA100. With the small PS still
connected(the K2 does not recognize the KPA100), the bad audio problems
returned. Disconnecting the small PS from the K2, and connecting the Astron
35m(which is about 2ft. from the left side of the K2) to the KPA100, but
keeping power below 10 watts to keep the KPA100 off the results were no
different. Turning the power up to turn the KPA100 on, the results were no
different. Power output through an external watt meter closely follows the
power selected.

What now?

73, George, NC5G

George,

Ask yourself what has changed between good operation and now.
Have you re-arranged your shack? The K2 is sensitive to devices with
transformers positioned within 2 feet of the left side panel - the
transformer's magnetic field modulates the K2 VFO.

As a test, move your K2 away from everything else on the desk and run a
test.

If this proves to be your problem, you can install the optional mod kit,
VCOSHLDKT.

Don W3FPR

 K2/100, KAT100, KPA500, and resonant antennas on 75 and 40 meters. Very
rarely do SSB on any other bands. Stations seem to have trouble describing
the problem. Reports vary from fuzziness, distortion, to clipping. I
bypassed the tuner and amp, hooking feed line directly to K2/100 and also
turned the power down to ten watts to shut off the KPA100 and problem
persists. No difference between MH2 and CM500 mics. These test were done
with stations who know my rig and my voice. This is an early K2/100. All
mods were done years ago to K2, SSB, and KPA100. Receive audio is
 unchanged.
Visual inspection of boards look OK.

As a further check, I connected my KX3 to amp and antennas with great
 results.

Re: [Elecraft] (Goes OT) Any report on compatibility of Win8 and the utilities?

2012-10-28 Thread Joel Black
Chuck,

I downloaded and have installed Win8 on a second partition.

Thus far, all of the Elecraft utilities have worked with a caveat - I
installed the K3 utility and it worked fine. I installed the P3 utility
and could not talk to the P3. At that point, I installed Fldigi and
Flrig. Neither would talk to the K3 on the correct port (well, neither
Fldigi nor Flrig saw *any* com port). I restarted Win8 and the problem
was resolved. For whatever reason, once the K3 utility started, it
didn't want to release the com port. After a restart, Flrig talked to
the K3 through the P3 and also controlled Flidigi as it should. I have
not noticed this problem again. I did not take the default install
location and changed it to C:\Elecraft\... I have *not* been able to
turn off UAC in Win8 as I have in Win7. Even though it should be off, I
still get warnings. Oh, I almost forgot, when I installed the K3
utility, I got a Win8 warning. I do not remember the verbage, but I hit
More Info and then Run Anyway (or something similar). I did not get
this warning with either the P3 or KX3 utilities. I also got this
warning upon installation of either Flrig or Fldigi but I don't remember
which (it was not both).

I also have a KX3 and I downloaded and installed the KX3 utility. I
even updated the firmware on the KX3 with no issues.

I will say that I hate/love the Win8 interface. If you've ever used
Ubuntu Linux and gone from Gnome to Unity, it's a similar change.
However, I think the new Windows interface is slightly (I mean slightly)
more intuitive than Unity. I am slowly installing stuff on the Win8
partition. I may just buy a second SSD and install Win8 and Win7
side-by-side albeit on separate hard drives.

There are actually two interfaces:

1) Metro UI - this is geared toward the tablet / touchscreen crowd, but
it works okay with a mouse. To close an open app, you drag it to the
bottom of the screen. I searched for a long time on how to do this. I
never could find a close button. Also, in the Metro UI, all the apps
pop up full screen. There is no way to resize a window in Metro that I
have found. Again, think tablet.

2) Desktop - this is what most Windows users are familiar with. It
works just as the previous versions' desktops except there is no Start
button.

Programs that are installed (if you choose to install a shortcut to the
desktop) will give you an icon on both Metro and the desktop.

I stated more than you asked and apologize for taking this OT.

Joel - W4JBB
