[Elecraft] KX3 in Sweepstakes

2012-11-05 Thread Mike K2MK
I worked a huge number of QRP stations during the CW Sweepstakes this
weekend. Many more than has been usual. Must be all of those new KX3
operators taking it out for a spin.

[Elecraft] KRC2

2012-11-05 Thread Georges Ringotte F6DFZ
Hi to the group,

I would like to know if the KRC2 can be used to interface a Kenwood rig to the
KAT500.

The KRC2 can read the Kenwood RS232 protocol and know its frequency.
The KAT500 needs a BCD code to switch bands (with the K3 it gets it from the
Aux connector).
The KRC2 has a connector (J4) which can be set to Input or Output BCD code.

My questions are : does the KRC2 outputs the correct BCD code needed by the
KAT500 when the Kenwood rig is set to a frequency ?
Can each band limits be set with the KRC2 utility software ?

I would prefer personnal experience than theory, I have carrefully read the
manual !

Thanks and best regards.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 in Sweepstakes

2012-11-05 Thread Jim Sheldon
Hooked mine up to my Butternut HF2V vertical and got on 80 "early" Sunday
morning. Ran it at 5 watts on internal 2.5 amp hour NiMH batteries. Made 25
contacts for 19 sections in just over an hour with it and the battery voltage
only dropped from 10.2 to 9.6 indicated. Not a serious contest effort and 80
meters only but I did submit a "check-log". I heard KH7X in Hawaii on the low
end and he was booming in. He changed bands before I had a chance to call him
so I don't know if my setup could have made the trip.

I had absolutely no problems with hearing anyone, even the really weak ones
nestled right up to the 40 over 9 stations and only 2 of the stations I called
failed to answer and they had signals that were less than S8 here in Kansas.
Beautiful little rig and I couldn't be happier with it.

[Elecraft] KX3 testing

2012-11-05 Thread Howard Hoyt
Eric, Wayne;

I would like to use the KX3 as a signal source for extended periods, in
the order of 10-15 minutes or more. Other than the noted power-foldback
with PA temp characteristic, is there any other component in the KX3
design which would not be happy with an extended transmit use? I can
work around the power foldback with PA temp issue, but would hate to
degrade or risk failure of another internal component in this use.

Thanks in advance,

2012-11-05 Thread Don Wilhelm
E.P.

Look at the specifications in the manual.

The specifications state that the stability is +/-1ppm over 0-50 degC.
Whether or not that meets your criteria for a TCXO or an OCXO is to be
determined by your expectations of stability. For me, the TCXO or OCXO
terms alone are meaningless, they must relate to the specifications for
each. For example, a TXCO having +/- 9 ppm stability has worse
stability than a non-TCXO with a stability of +/-5ppm.

Howard,

I am not Eric or Wayne, but the KX3 is specified for continuous duty at
3 watts, so if your output power needs are at 3 watts or less, you
should be able to go keydown all day long at that power level.

Hi to the List,
I was wondering if there is anyone living close to Chester (in England) that

The basic problem is with getting the rig showing full power output at QRP
levels and fully setup.
If you can help please feel free to phone me on the mobile below.
I will say I'm deaf and speaking on a phone is quite arduous for me so be
patient please :-)

You can key down as long as you like, assuming you don't hit the PA's

[Elecraft] K3 Contest Operation Question

2012-11-05 Thread John Watkins
When I run QRP in major contests like this weekend I search and pounce and work
my way up the band bottom to top. I run with the filter on 2.7.

Using N3FJP logger and winkeyer I was wondering is there a way I can have a
keyboard shortcut to switch the K3 from the 2.7 to the 400 filter so I don't
have to double tap the xfil button.

Looking for ideas.

Re: [Elecraft] Looking for QRP Balun

2012-11-05 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ed,

The Elecraft BL1 can be built for either the 4:1 or 1:1 configuration.
Alternately, the BL2 uses a switch to change from a 1:1 ratio to 4:1.

If that is physically too big for you, use the same design as either the
BL1 or BL2 and wind it on the binocular core used in the K2 PA output
(Elecraft PN E690011) - in that case, the enclosure will be one of your
choosing (I suggest non-metallic to eliminate sneak paths that are not
obvious on casual inspection).

[Elecraft] Looking for QRP Balun

2012-11-05 Thread Terry Domae
Hi - I've been using a radiowavz "QRP DX 40-10" 4:1 balun. It's not on
their product sheet.
It will handle 100w ssb, 25w cw. Its about 4" long and 1.5" in diameter.
Very light. Just looks like a smaller version of their full power baluns.

I use it to feed a portable OCF dipole. I understand they sell this to
TenTec for their portable multiband qrp antenna. You need to contact
radiowavz directly to purchase it. I've been using it for a few months now
with some extended use like the cqww-ssb and it seems to be ok. I don't
know about how weather proof it is - time will tell.

You can also build one - pretty easy - checkout the 4:1 balun design that
was published with articles associated with this antenna:
http://www.hamuniverse.com/k4iwlnewwindom.html I built several of these
antennas and balun for field use. I purchased the radiowavz one for the
nicer package.

Re: [Elecraft] Looking for QRP Balun

2012-11-05 Thread Dyarnes
Ed and All,

Here is a link to a bunch of variations on 4:1 baluns you can construct
yourself.

http://www.google.com/search?q=4:1+balun&hl=en&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=6PqXUNXAPM-l2AW454DoBQ&ved=0CDUQsAQ&biw=1463&bih=709

As for something commercial, the Elecraft BL-1 is a good option, and it can

Re: [Elecraft] kx3 is there txco ocxo ????

2012-11-05 Thread Edward R Cole
The freq stability is rated at 1ppm which is +/- 28-Hz on 10m or +/-
50-Hz on 6m. Since 6m is to be the IF for the 2m module that is not
adequate for some digital modes (like JT65 used in eme). Often I
select the 20-Hz bw on JT65 so if the radio drifts out of that signal
decoding will be interupted.

Wayne has talked about a possible EXREF for the KX3 which I suppose
would offer better stability locked to an external reference (like
what was done for the K3?).

I get +/- 6Hz on 432 with my K3+EXREF and a 432-28 PLL locked transverter.

[Elecraft] KX3-2M?

2012-11-05 Thread Edward R Cole
Any word when the 2m module for the KX3 is expected? I heard a
"rumor" of early 2013.but??
Maybe the design team is looking at the trade-off between the 2M and
a EXREF for internal installation?

I would like to get both and expect one to be housed external to the radio.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2

2012-11-05 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Hi Georges,

The KAT500 will work with all HF - 6M rigs. It only needs RF to tune and
to select band and antenna.

There is a frequency counter built into the KAT500 to detect frequency
changes.

Since you are operating from a logger, I suggest you set up macros to

There have been some reports of transmit drift in early KX3 units,
especially modes that are long duration, like JT65. A modification has
been made in the firmware that allows for making a custom temperature
correction curve that is used to compensate the oscillator as the PA heats
up. It changed the situation for me on JT65-HF from one where my transmit
signal would vary unacceptably over a 48 second period, to one that is
entirely acceptable. The calibration process does require access to a
stable signal source (like a K3 that is warmed up and in a steady-temp
room).

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Re: qrp balun - how about not QRP?

2012-11-05 Thread Don Wilhelm
Randy,

That "balun" will not be very effective below 6 meters. The inductance
of each winding is about 1000 nHy, which provides only 60 ohm choking
impedance at 10 MHz. Sorry, but there are designs out there on the web
that do not hold up to scrutiny.
An effective balun must have a choking impedance of at least 5 times the
feedpoint impedance, so for a 4:1 balun (200 ohms), the impedance must
be 1000 ohms or more to be effective.

[Elecraft] FS: Fair-Rite Type 31 Mix Large Clamp-on Ferrite Cores

2012-11-05 Thread Craig Smith
I have for sale a quantity of 8 large Fair-Rite type 31 mix clamp-on cores.
These are the best available cores for conveniently making high performance
common-mode chokes over the HF amateur bands. Fair-Rite PN is 0431177081 and
the Mouser PN is 623-0431177081. I purchased these new from Mouser over the
past few years. Some have been used outside on temporary contest antennas,
some used inside for noise suppression in shack and on appliances. Some have
not been used. All are in perfect condition mechanically and electrically
with at most some slight discoloration on the exterior plastic. Closing down
the station here, so no longer have a use for them.

Core OD is a little over 2 inches, ID is about 1 inch and length is about 1.7
inches. Can be used to easily make multi-turn chokes even on RG-8 sized coax.
Please see K9YC’s excellent tutorial on his website for extensive applications
information and reference designs.

The current low quantity Mouser price for these is $19.70 each. Selling all
eight for $120. Your purchase includes secure packaging and USPS Priority Mail
shipping to your USA address. PayPal only, please. If interested, please
contact me directly via email: craig (at) powersmith (dot) net.

[Elecraft] Odd behavior of Bandwidth in AM mode

2012-11-05 Thread David McClain
Hi all,

I notice that when I vary the bandwidth of reception in AM mode, my K3 appears
to take that as the double-sideband bandwidth, not the audio bandwidth, while
the P3 shows that value as a faux +/- audio bandwidth.

For example, if I set bandwidth to 1.8 kHz, the actual audio bandwidth appears
to be 900 Hz centered wherever I set the filter center frequency, while the P3
shows +/- 1.8 kHz from the tuning frequency.

Not a big deal, but thought I'd point out the inconsistency.

Re: [Elecraft] tx rx filter kx3

2012-11-05 Thread Don Wilhelm
E P.

Yes, the KX3 is an SDR with knobs. The function and operation of the
KX3 is defined by the software (firmware) - that fact makes it an SDR.

The TX and RX filters are set in the DSP section of the firmware to
match the mode, so I really do not understand your question. Yes, the
KX3 is not the radio defined in several computer applications that deal
with SDRs.

All SDRs are not identical.

[Elecraft] More KAT500 PTT Questions

2012-11-05 Thread Ed G
Folks,

I am trying to understand the tuning approach taken by the KAT500,
specifically how it relates to the PTT line. The KAT500 manual (Rev. A) on
page 13 spells out precautions to take when using the KAT500 with a
non-Elecraft amplifier. This appears to be necessary to protect some
amplifiers from damage, in case the PTT line opens up while the amp is
energized and putting out power. Page 5 of the manual states that the key
line opens whenever a KAT500 tune operation occurs. So should my concern
for non-Elecraft amp damage only relate to band changes, as page 13 implies,
or will PTT open whenever the KAT500 senses a high SWR and retunes, even if
on the same band? It would be impractical for me to anticipate KAT500
retuning when moving into a new band segment and try to shut down the amp
per the procedure on page 13.

Re: [Elecraft] More KAT500 PTT Questions

2012-11-05 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ed,

The KAT500 is not *that* automatic. It will not automatically re-tune
even if it senses a high SWR. You must tell it to tune. Once it has
been tuned to each antenna and bend segment, returning to that set of
tuning parameters is automatic - just go to that frequency and antenna
and the proper tuning will be recalled.

Re: [Elecraft] More KAT500 PTT Questions

2012-11-05 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
That's not true, Don... the KAT500 *will* auto-tune if/when VSWR
exceeds a (configurable, per-band) threshold.

A lot of consideration is being put into different ways of handling
"hot-switching" situations with various types of amplifiers. The
currently-posted provisional manual may not be reflective of the final
result of this consideration.

Re: [Elecraft] More KAT500 PTT Questions

2012-11-05 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
Well, it does actually say this in the manual:

"In AUTO mode, if you QSY such that the SWR rises above 1.8:1 the
KAT500 will automatically retune
when you transmit on the new frequency. The KAT500 will open the key
line to disable your amplifier
briefly until the tune cycle is completed. The new frequency and
settings are stored in memory."

That 1.8:1 threshold is configurable, per-band ... and the opening of
the keying line during auto-tune is the part that can be problematic
for some types of amplifier, so further conditions are being
considered

5 amps may be more than you need for the KX3. Radio shack has a little 3 amp
switching ps that I think is perfect. It's abt half the size and weight of the
KX3. I think it sells for abt 60 bucks.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Compact power supply

2012-11-05 Thread Jim Sheldon
I don't believe you really need 5 amps, 3.5 or 4 should be plenty for the KX3
-- I'm running mine on a 12 volt 3.5 amp regulated wall wart right now and it
works fine to 10 watts out.

Here's another one that isn't terribly expensive from Marlin P. Jones &
Associates ( www.mpja.com). It's a 12 volt 4.16 amp supply with overvoltage
protection and current limiting. It's original use was to power home medical
CPAP devices (breathing mask for people with sleep apnea). These are listed as
used, but they look pretty decent in their pictures. (disclaimer - I have no
financial interest in MPJA, just a satisfied customer.) Lists for $12.95 plus
UPS ground shipping.

[Elecraft] K3/KPA-500 SWR's

2012-11-05 Thread Brian Alsop
Guys,

I put up a new tribander.

I had a difficult time tuning it up so that CW/RTTY segments allowed
full KPA-500 power without tripping w/o a tuner. It's OK that higher
phone segments need a tuner.

Part of the problem had to do with the differences seen between K3 and
KPA-500 SWR's. Show below is a sample on 15M. The coax was taken off
the back of the amp and plugged into the K3. Thus no cable length
differences.

The procedure was to tune up the antenna with the K3 so that the bottom
end of the CW band was just under 2:1. Then use the amp. Zap, the amp
trips thinking the SWR is 2.3:1. I thought it was something in the
feedline shorting, arcs or bad traps. Not so apparently.

The bottom line is the KPA-500 reads higher by as much as 0.4 in SWR.
Yes different SWR meters read differently. However here, the result is
that the amp will trip earlier than if one believed the K3 SWR.

Truth is apparently hard to divine.

There also is a power level dependence in the KPA-500 SWR. 200 ->500
watts increases SWR 0.2. The K3 shows no difference from 10-100 W.

FINAL RESULTS AFTER ALL ANTENNA TRIMMING COMPLETE
Freq K3 SWR KPA-500 SWR
21 1.7 1.9
21.025 1.4 1.7
21.06 1.1 1.3
21.100 1 1.1
21.21.2 1.6
21.31.5 2.0

I can't answer how the two compare into a dummy load. The point at 21.1
suggests the two would agree.

I would like some understanding of this effect. I'm all for protection,
but I'm not for over protection.

[Elecraft] K1 Alignment question

2012-11-05 Thread Curtis Johnson
Hi,

I built a K1 this summer that I have been getting great reports on from other
ops I've had QSOs with. However I wonder if I have everything aligned
correctly. What I notice, particularly when I have the filters active, is that
the receive signal strength is strongest when I've tuned below what would match
my 700hz side tone. I don't really know if this is typical or if I don't have
something adjusted correctly.

thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] K1 Alignment question

2012-11-05 Thread Gil G.
Hello Curt,

Your filters are probably off center. Install Fldigi and plug in the K1 headset
plug into your computer mic plug. Then I think it's C21 that you use to center
the filter, if I remember well. I also think you have to redo the C13 alignment
after that. I'm just writing this from memory, so check before you attempt
anything… Don or someone better than me can give you the whole procedure. I had
the same problem and it was a very easy fix.

Re: [Elecraft] WTB: Unassembled K-2 or Partial

2012-11-05 Thread Jim Lowman
If you do decide to buy an older K2 kit, ask about the serial number.
Those with s/n below 4060 will possibly need firmware updates. These
are actual hardware upgrades that are not trivial.
My K2 was one of the first few hundred sold, and I had to do this.

Unless you can get a great deal, and know how good the builder's skills
are and why it was not completed, your best bet is a brand new K2 kit
which will not need to be upgraded.

[Elecraft] [K2] Initial Power Up Test Partial Failure

2012-11-05 Thread Edward Kleckner
I think I need some help. After having a K2 (SN 6280) sitting unmade for 5
years, I finally got started on it and have reached the Alignment and Test,
Part 1 stage. When powered up, I get "Elecraft" and then the frequency display.
However, using band+ and band- I can only see 10, 12, 15 meters - 17m tunes but
not to the proper freq. 20-80m all just say 15151. for freq. although the
number of significant digits can be changed with the tuning Rate pushbutton and
the mode change works. the menu button works, as does A, B, rit xit, display of
voltage and current is normal. relays click with band changes even when moving
through the lower bands when they just display the 15151 reading. All
resistance checks for front panel and control boards are normal.

Regulated 8 and 5 volts are correct. The 4 mhz oscilator is running. The
voltages on the IOC on the rf board are normal. Each time I press band+ (or
band-), pin 28 of the IOC dips from the nominal 5v as it should.

One other thing: the pre/att switch does not trigger the associated relays and
there is no signal on pin 28 of the IOC. (This may be unrelated to the band
problem) Voltage checks of the MCU are normal with the exception of: pin 18 is
5v instead of 0v, pin 25 is 5v instead of 0v, pin 33 is 0v instead of 5v.
However this may be perfectly normal as the rf board is only minimally built
and the table is for a fully built unit.

Needless to say, I have checked carefully on the three boards for bad joints,
unsoldered joints, or bridged joints, although it is certainly possible i have
missed something.

At this point I know AUX bus signals are going to the IOC (or at least the
voltage is fluctuating when the panel buttons are pressed) so I am left
wondering if either 1) the IOC is not working correctly, or 2) the MCU is not
sending the proper signals. Or -- some other explanation?

Any help someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
