Re: [Elecraft] Is it possible to generate 1750Hz tone on HF with the K3 ?

2012-12-13 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
Touch-tones are DTMF (dual-tone multi-frequency). CTCSS is Continuous
Tone-Coded Squelch System. They're quite different animals ;)

Audacity as a tone-generator function. I'd try that first.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 key clicks

2012-12-13 Thread Bill
Bill,

I recently had a similar report that I was clicking and had spurious
radiation up and down the band. I borrowed a spectrum analyzer and
confirmed that the K3 was indeed producing lots of spurious radiation.

I contacted Elecraft support and within one day they helped me trouble shoot
the problem down to the component. In my case Q4 on the LPA board had
failed. I replaced Q4 and that cured the problem.

I suggest you contact Elecraft support by email (they responded to my email
almost immediately).

Good Luck and 73

Re: [Elecraft] K3 key clicks

2012-12-13 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
To confirm what Geoff said, if your antenna has some kind of diodic
contact, then the arc-over at the beginning of each baud, and the cessation
of arc at the end, will create beautifilous klix mostly heard by
locals. Having
a jumpy SWR is not good.

The arcing could be in coax and connectors instead of in the antenna, but
happening only on one band (is that true?) points more at the antenna.

You may need to take down the antenna, clean, regoop and retighten all the
connections. If you find carbon traces, you may have more problems than
just connections. If you have traps in the antenna, those can have a
problem that you can't repair.

Engage your neighbor in chasing down the problem.

Fred,

The best source of good information that I have found on operating multiple
radios safely is the book by George Cutsogeorge, W2VJN: "Managing
Interstation Interferrence". It covers all the issues with running SO2R as
well as other multi-transmitter configurations, and provides techniques to
measure interference and mediate it.

The book is available from Array Solutions here:
http://www.arraysolutions.com/Products/Books/W2VJN_Interference.htm

Antenna isolation is the name of the game and, particularly with QRO,
requires a great deal of care and planning. I run 100W in an SO2R
configuration with 2 K3's on a small city lot. My solution to the isolation
problem has been the use of W3NQN bandpass filters and antenna geometries to
minimize interaction. Using W2VJN's analysis techniques and employing some
of the possible solutions noted by him, I can operate safely and have
confidence that I am not damaging my K3's receiver.

Re: [Elecraft] KUSB Noise Query - K3

2012-12-13 Thread Mike Harris
A few years ago I was receiving noise from my PC on 6M, via the serial
interface cable. I was also receiving it when using the KUSB of the
time with the Prolific chip-set.

I made a new serial cable using CAT-6 and the technique used in the
"K9YC RFI-Ham.pdf" tutorial, page 38.

This significantly reduce the noise and interestingly when I placed it
in series with the KUSB it had the same effect. My new serial cable was
about 3 metres long and I was going to make up a short version to see if
it had the same effect. Unfortunately I never did.

Subject: [Elecraft] KUSB Noise Query - K3

Hi Folks,
I posted a query about K3 Serial ports a few months back - we could not get the
K3 to work properly with the RS232 connection. It turned out to be a fault with
the sound card, which took out the serial connections.
When I first built the K3, I bought a cheap Prolific USB converter, which
radiates awful noise over the spectrum. I decided to bite the bullet and buy
the proper lead, which arrived today.

Using my Toshiba laptop, on battery power, I get a couple of s points of noise
on 10M with the KUSB connected and HRD fired up. This is using my
2 element DJ4VM quad, which is fed with 300 ohm twin into the shack, i.e. near
the laptop.

On LF, I can hear the pulsing information, in sympathy with the flashing LEDs
on the KUSB on 160M at quite a high level. I can even detect this when fed into
a Marconi dummy load. The K3 and the tuning units are bonder to an RF earth - a
copper stake about 8 feet away from the K3.

I have tried choking the USB lead at the laptop end, which does reduce the
noise to a degree.

The question I have is - am I being unrealistic in expecting zero noise to be
radiated from these adaptors?
Does anyone else have this problem - or has anyone looked for it?

It is not very noticeable on CW or SSB. To hear it best, listen in the AM mode
with the AGC off. On SSB it sounds like band noise.

Is this a problem JUST with USB adaptors or can I expect silence when
connecting a computer via RS232 to RS232.

If not we are sacrificing a low noise floor for the convenience of computer
control.

Any views appreciated,

73

Re: [Elecraft] K3 key clicks

2012-12-13 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy

Bill,

The clicks which your neighbour heard could have been caused by something in
your antenna or feeder arcing over, or possibly an intermittent
contact.I note that you said that sometimes your Cushcraft vertical "has
high SWR spikes", which suggests that something in your feeder or antenna is
sometimes misbehaving.

nicer antennas going up in the next few weeks and more power once I get
220V to the shack).

I have a neighbor, Jerry K0DU, who lives about 4 miles away and is an
active contester. We can see each other's QTHs from our respective shacks
across a high elevation Colorado plateau. Needless to say we have no
trouble hearing each other.

I have noticed that I can get within 2-kHz of Jerry when he's operating CW
with at full 1.5-kW output with no clicks or elevated tx noise. I can see
a giant signal on the P3 but can't hear a thing once I'm 2-kHz either
side. This underscores how nice the K3 rx is. I have a full set of
accessory CW roofing filters.

After the 10m test recently Jerry emailed me "...(Jerry's guest op) came
across you several times on CW... heard buckshot or key clicks out of the
pass band of our receiver up & down the band" This suprised since I had
noted during the contest how close I could operate to Jerry. And he was
running his linear and I was operating barefoot. Jerry has a FTdx5000 so
I don't think poor selectivity or bad rx design is the issue. I confirmed
that Jerry's 5000 did not have the NB engaged during the 10m test.

What can I do to check my K3 for transmitted key clicks and other unwanted
emissions? How to do to eliminate same once I confirm the problem?
Frankly, I Jerry's transmissions don't bother me reciprocity didcates than
my transmissions shouldn't bother him especially with an
order-of-magnitude different to transmitted power.

The Cushcraft vertical (an R8) sometimes has high SWR spikes. Since its
being decommissioned soon and I've been running low power I haven't
bothered to trouble shoot it. Could this be contributing to the
clicks/"buckshot"?

I'll run some tests with Jerry after I have a plan of attack.

Re: [Elecraft] Why are my messages being cut off at the subject line?

2012-12-13 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED

Hello John,

First of all: Please send emails via the Elecraft mailing list only as plain text. Your
request was a blank email body (beside the footer).

The first bounding factor is the internet provider. For example AOL cuts the subject line
to about 38 signs, Yahoo to 47 and Hotmail to 45.

The second bounding factor is the mail client at the receiver. Mobile phones e.g. can
display less than this signs.

If you would like to write a novel, please use the body. The subject is a line
(!).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 key clicks

2012-12-13 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft
Also note that the Blocking Dynamic Range of the FT-5000 is approximately 13-15
dB worse than the K3's, as per the Sherwood and ARRL lab test data. That mean
his rx will desense on much weaker local signals than the K3.

John,

The Elecraft list will do that to messages that are sent as html. Switch
your email client to send only plain text - or remember to turn your
reflector posts into plain text before sending.
I don't know which email client you are using, so you will have to look
at its help file to find out how to do that if you don't already know.

I have had bad experiences buying ham equipment on eBay and like Fred focus on
QTH.com or qrz.com for used equipment. Burned by radiomart 2x, and a bad old
skool Yaesu tube amp. These three experiences has made me move to those
websites that are actually run and managed by ham operators.

I do use ebay and have had excellent experience buying discontinued Geoffrey

Re: [Elecraft] Selling my K2.

2012-12-13 Thread Dyarnes

Fred and All,

I think Fred's comment is a bit excessive. It's a shame he had a bad
experience, but the same thing could have happened if he had used almost any
other "venue" for selling gear, like Eham, or QTH, or whatever. You can't
just blame Ebay for your own mistakes. His comments about being more
careful about just how you effect the transaction are more appropriate.
Truth is, you can make a bad deal anywhere!

I don't use Ebay a lot, but I have made a few acquisitions through it.
Fortunately, they all turned out O.K. I guess I was just lucky. Like Fred,
I'm somewhat cautious about some things I see there, but that's mainly
because it is so wide open. Half the time you really don't know who you are
really dealing with. Usually, though, you do have the option to contact the
seller first, so it doesn't have to be totally blind faith.

In any event, if you have any significant concerns, you should probably
follow Fred's suggestion and get some sort of assurance that you have
recourse. You should probably do that with any 2nd hand acquisition,
regardless of where you get it. I think Ebay has some sort of "problem
resolution" process, but I don't know how effective it is since I've never
had to use it. If it has any value at all, it may be better to buy there
than on some other venues. However, I think the first rule of any such
transaction should be to have at least some idea as to who you are dealing
with. If it's some "phantom", hiding behind some obtuse ID, you don't have
much upon which to place your faith. I also have another rule--"When in
doubt, pass!" If you can't get the assurances that make you reasonably
comfortable, I'd let the deal go. Except in rare instances, there is almost
surely going to be another equally reasonable deal, if not better, coming
down the pike. Personally, I have to keep reminding myself of this last
rule. It's hard not to get somewhat excited (and possibly foolish) when you
see a good deal come along.

[Elecraft] My Christmas wish.

2012-12-13 Thread bill . va3ol
Wayne and crew:
Is there a way to make the CW/Data display full time?

I don't know how many times I have been in a cw contact, just above my
abilities, and looked at the display; for a fill; and saw the VFO B
frequency instead of the needed fill.

Generally when I am in conversation I really don't care about VFO B. But I
do care about the information being decoded - or not.

Thanks

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 key clicks

I am currently operating barefoot at my new-ish (moved here one year ago) QTH
in Glade Park CO with a K3 and a Cushcraft vertical antenna. (Much nicer
antennas going up in the next few weeks and more power once I get 220V to the
shack).

I have a neighbor, Jerry K0DU, who lives about 4 miles away and is an active
contester. We can see each other's QTHs from our respective shacks across a
high elevation Colorado plateau. Needless to say we have no trouble hearing
each other.

I have noticed that I can get within 2-kHz of Jerry when he's operating CW with
at full 1.5-kW output with no clicks or elevated tx noise. I can see a giant
signal on the P3 but can't hear a thing once I'm 2-kHz either side. This
underscores how nice the K3 rx is. I have a full set of accessory CW roofing
filters.

After the 10m test recently Jerry emailed me "...(Jerry's guest op) came
across you several times on CW... heard buckshot or key clicks out of the pass
band of our receiver up & down the band" This suprised since I had noted
during the contest how close I could operate to Jerry. And he was running his
linear and I was operating barefoot. Jerry has a FTdx5000 so I don't think
poor selectivity or bad rx design is the issue. I confirmed that Jerry's 5000
did not have the NB engaged during the 10m test.

What can I do to check my K3 for transmitted key clicks and other unwanted
emissions? How to do to eliminate same once I confirm the problem? Frankly, I
Jerry's transmissions don't bother me reciprocity didcates than my
transmissions shouldn't bother him especially with an order-of-magnitude
different to transmitted power.

The Cushcraft vertical (an R8) sometimes has high SWR spikes. Since its being
decommissioned soon and I've been running low power I haven't bothered to
trouble shoot it. Could this be contributing to the clicks/"buckshot"?

I'll run some tests with Jerry after I have a plan of attack.

Re: [Elecraft] Selling my K2

Gil-
If you just do CW portable, why not get a KX1 with the included paddles?   Much
less expensive than the KX3.  And you can keep your K2!   Why sell something
that you put so much into?

With the K1, I carry three items, a battery, the K1, and my paddles.
With the KX3, I'll have only one, using the attached paddles. That also
means a Pelican 1200 case Instead of the 1400 I use for my K1... I can
also use the KX3 at home like I do my K2. It's quite a bit more money
for me, but if I also sell my Icom IC-271A, I'll be getting close ;-)

Matt & Brian, thanks for the suggestions. This KUSB is the latest type,
I believe with the FTDI chip set.. The old one I had was a Prolific
chip set - but not a KUSB.
I'll look up the HS19.

Re: [Elecraft] KUSB Noise Query - K3

2012-12-13 Thread Scott Monks
Try "disconnecting" the K3 from the program without touching anything
else.  I recently discovered that if I "disconnect" my logging program (so it
is not directly controlling my K3) it will reduce noise level on 15m, about
half, making weak signals very readable.  When I opened the communication and
control with the program the noise came back--noise or no as I activated or
dis-activated the control function.

I am not experienced enough with this type of control to pinpoint the real
source of the noise or yet how to control it, but it is there.

However, it is frustrating for me because now I can hear them but my signal is
too weak to work them!!  hi, hi

USB uses differential signaling.  Your problem may not be conductive noise, but
instead it could be radiated directly from the adapter, where the ferrite won't
help.

KeySpan makes a USB - serial adapter that is pretty much noise-free.  Its
model  is HS19, I think.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Front End Protection

2012-12-13 Thread Stan Gibbs

[Elecraft] Tune and CW power levels in version 4.60

2012-12-13 Thread Jack Colson
I just upgraded to mcu 4.60 and observed that when adjusting the power out on
CW to a suitable value to drive an amplifier then switching to tune the power
is at almost full (90+watts). Is this a change from earlier mcu versions or my
bad memory?

After setting the tune power out to a lower value and using it at that level
the next time you go to use the tune it is back at almost full output.

Bob,

You are OK.
There is some bleed-through of the IF output during transmit, and I
believe that is what you are seeing.

[Elecraft] K3 Front End Protection

2012-12-13 Thread Fred Smith
I have saw this posted before but not quite in this respect. I'm using 2
K3's with a Array Solutions SIXpack antenna controller SO2R, using 3
different antennas for HF a beam covering all bands 10-40m, vertical 10-160m
and a OCFD @ 55' 270' long 10-160m.

The OCFD is using the same tower as the beam only 10' from the feed point.
The vertical a Hy Gain AV-18HT with a top mounted kit for 160m is only about
125' from the tower very good radial field.

My "B" station K3 is a full Elecraft KPA500/KAT500/W2, the second "A"
station is a K3/P3-SVGA into an Alpha 87A legal limit + Palstar HF-Auto.

With these power levels I don't want to tempt fate but may very well like to
use both radios at the same time while monitoring another band on the other
radio and a quick call once in a while. I have looked at several front end
protectors but they to be all for just receiving antennas and preamps no
transmit ones Am I correct not to trust the built in protection in the K3
for this? It's a great radio but don't want to destroy it either by running
that much power in antennas so close.

If the K3 cannot handle this power could anyone guide me to a source that
sells something that meets my needs.

Thanks to all for your response.

Fred/N0AZZ

It might be possible to have your computer (presuming a computer is

have the DVR recorder module, you could record -that- tone into the

[Elecraft] K3 + SDR-IQ and regular CW operation

2012-12-13 Thread KD7YZ Bob
Howdy K3' people:

I was wondering what precautions are taken, or I need to invoke, when I
use any form of transmitting?

At present, the SDR-IQ is connected to the K3's IF BNC. K3's output is
through KAT500 then outside to the antenna some distance away at 80 to
85 feet AGL. Power, while I am testing, is circa 5 to 10 watts.

So I keyed the K3 a few times; called CQ, and so forth. I see my own
trace on the WF of CW-Skimmer, which is set to operate with SDR-IQ as
its "Input" .

Am I golden? Or am I about to overload the K3 and kill it?

thanks

[Elecraft] Let me build a K2 for you.

2012-12-13 Thread Alan Price

I have built more than 500 K2's and other Elecraft kits. Let me build one for
you. My prices are reasonable, and you receive a brand new radio with the
options you want. Please respond off of the reflector. 73AlanW1HYV
