Re: [Elecraft] [600MRG] Use of K3 on 600m (and below)

2013-09-12 Thread Edward R Cole

Correct.

Refer to the K3 manual, page 56, KXV3: If KXV3 is set to TEST, the
K3 will use low power (0.1 to1.50 mw) on all bands, including hte HF
and transverter bands. RF input/output is via teh XVTR IN/OUT jacks
in this case. To access the TEST setting, KXV3 must first be set to
NOR, then K3 turned off/on.

The K3 will transmit on any frequency from 490-KHz to 30-MHz in the
test mode if you have the General Coverage filter installed.

This procedure is how I used the K3 to transmit on 495-510 KHz under
the experimental license WD2XSH/45. I found I only need 0.1 mw to
drive my NDB transmitter. I insert the K3 drive in place of the
standard xtal oscillator. Details of this is on my 600m webpage.

Fred,

I believe Ed is referring to the KXV3 TEST mode. See page 50 of the
manual, the first bullet in the Milliwat TX Gain Calibration.

That is different than TX TEST.

At least they are low frequency, though the harmonics could be a bit lively.
Filters being expensive, are likely not to be used.

OK, so how are they going to share that sort of spectrum (2.45GHz etc) to
wirelessly charge remote devices, without killing WiFi and so on? Or creating
health risks (it's the same spectrum as microwave ovens use of course...)

A far bigger problem for us HF radio spectrum users, are Plasma TV's, and in
home power line networking. Both polute the RF spectrum from a few MHz,
now way up to a few 100MHz, often with no notches (that don't realy help
anyway) for some considerable distance.

Also many types of LED lighting, is particularly dirty RF wise too.

http://www.ban-plt.co.uk/UK based, but a lot of good general info.

With the presure to go green and everything be as efficient as possible, I do
wonder about Wireless charging in general, if the green movement is about to
shoot itself in it's collective foot.

Amazed...

What I found interesting was where the article said

A Cota-enabled device sends out a beacon signal that finds paths to the
charger, which in turn returns the power signal through only those open paths
back to the receiver, avoiding people or anything that absorbs its energy.

It sounds like they have found some new laws of physics.

Yes, you are being overly concerned G.

The CW output of all microHAM keyers is an open collector NPN
transistor capable of handling +48V DC and at least 100 mA. Unless
your key generated a negative voltage when it is open, there is no
issue connecting a straight key directly in parallel with the CW
output of any microHAM keyer.

Have an order in for a Winkeyer USB, had a few hangs doing direct computer CW
with N1MM, so it was a question I was having. I usually do the straight key and
a paddle into the K3 keyer.

A related question, got a Signallink up and running last week. Unplugged the
foot switch on the PTT line and was wondering if I could just do a Y off the
PTT jack with the Signalink and foot switch. Good post on the diodes, have done
that with amp keying for isolation.

Currently I manually switch between PC keying via a Microham Winkeyer
which keys via N1MM and a straight key by unplugging and re-plugging in
the back of the radio. I have been reluctant to simply parallel the two
by means of a Y cable for fear that sending with the straight key would
place a direct short across the output of the winkeyer and wreak havoc
on my winkeyer. Am I being unduly concerned?? Or is there enough
isolation built into the Winkeyer so that all will be well?? If I
could use a Y cable I would have the PC, the paddle, and the straight
key all available all the time which would be great. Thanks in advance
to all who respond.

Thanks for posting this Pete!
Are you noticing any observable decrease in signal strength with vs
without the hybrid splitter?
If I understand correctly a power splitter with 2 outputs will give 3db

An RF amp may be added to make up the loss.
I'm wondering how you would describe the signal loss, if you notice any?

Re: [Elecraft] [OT} Wireless chargers (or transmission of electrical energy by wireless methods.)

2013-09-12 Thread Edward R Cole
Probably unknown or forgotten was the NASA project to beam solar
power from orbit to earth! Yes, that was a real project (because I
worked on it). This was about 1972. Experiments were made using the
experimental station (DSS-13) at Goldstone Tracking Facility in the
Mojave Desert. I am not sure of the power transmitted but guess it
was 20kW at 2115 MHz. The receiving antenna was experimental made up
of a huge array of rectennas. Half-wave dipoles made with silicon
rectifier diodes with their leads cut to resonate as a dipole. The
distance power was successfully transmitted was something like
30-miles with 30% power transfer.

I was working on the orbiting transmitter portion of the project
which consisted of solar arrays encompassing square miles of area
above earth in a geostationary orbit. Individual solar panels would
power 2.5 GHz magnetrons for transmission of RF power down to earth
to the receiving 'rectenna arrays. We actually modified some
microwave oven magnetrons to proof the concept. So the concept had
thousands of solar panels feeding thousands of magnetrons in some
kind of phased array beaming this huge amount of RF to the surface of
the earth.

It was not cancelled by technical difficulties. I was cancelled due
to environmental issues: airline pilots concerned about flying thru
one these death rays and of course the bird people concerned about
killing birds flying thru the beam. I wonder how well it would work
with RFI to the 2.4G wifi services of today?

Sidenote: Testla is the unsung hero/wizard responsible for our AC
power transmission industry. His inventions were literally stolen by
peers of his time. It is a fascinating read into history of electrical power.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] [OT} Wireless chargers (or transmission of
electrical energy by wireless methods.)

Don't forget an ancient experimenter that wanted to transmit energy:
considerable amounts, by wireless!!! He wasn't stupid and was deadly
serious about this quest. Read his history!

His name was Nikola Tesla who spent untold amounts of money trying to do
just this! He wasn't successful except over very short distances and the
efficiency wasn't good.

So don't get your hopes up.

Tesla revolutionized the AC electric generation and transmission system
with Westinghouse bankrolling him and made the polyphase AC system the
cornerstone for all the systems on the grid today except for the small
amount solar and wind power contribute at this time. There really isn't a
technology that will outdo steam turbine power generation except perhaps for
nuclear plants which can become runaway hazards as demonstrated by 6 Mile
Island and Chernobyl Russia meltdowns plus the tsunami upset nuclear plants
in Japan! Engineers and ecologists still haven't found a way to safely
store spent nuclear fuel rods without them having the possibility of
becoming toxic and extremely dangerous in the future.

Transmitting megawatts of power versus just a few watts wirelessly are
horses of two completely different colors in spite of what the dreamers
say.

[Elecraft] [K3] Custom 700 Hz 8-Pole Filters -- A Possible Photo Finish

2013-09-12 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Ken and I are now accepting orders towards our fifth batch of 700 Hz INRAD
filters which is scheduled to ship in early November. Coincidentally we
are now projecting that this next batch will sell out about the same date
it ships. (A subsequent batch can be expected about 15 weeks after that
date, i.e. in the mid-February timeframe.)

If this batch doesn't sell out before it arrives, then any remaining
filters will almost surely disappear within a matter of hours of their
arrival! Please visit http://www.unpcbs.com for full details, including:
ordering instructions; user comments; retail price; SH charges; passband
plot; FAQs; and app notes.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Splitter for Loop RX Antenna ?

2013-09-12 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Duane,

I'll jump in with my 2 cents. I use the DXE-RSC-2 splitter from DX
Engineering for my Pixel RX loop. One leg goes to the KXV3A RX IN port for
the Main RX and the other leg goes to the AUX port for the SUB RX. I think
this is what the original poster was trying to accomplish. This would be in
non-diversity use. The DX ENGR unit has a 3db per port loss which I'm sure
is true. But we pretty much expect RX antennas to have somewhat lower gain
than our transmitting antenna. Their advantage is in improved signal to
noise ratio. We make adjustments for this by possibly not using the K3
attenuator or by using the K3 pre-amp. Or we use an external amplifier with
the RX antenna. By taking these steps an additional loss of 3db signal +
noise should not be a show stopper.

Mike K2MK

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Splitter for Loop RX Antenna ?

2013-09-12 Thread wb6rse1
A simple BNC T connector (IE wire-or) from the RX antenna to the KXV3A RX IN
and to the AUX IN of the SUB RX works fine. No amplification necessary. In
diversity RX, the Main RX switches to my TX vertical and the SUB RX swicthes to
the RX Antenna - loop, beverage etc. I had first tried a Magic-T splitter but
found it to be unnecssary vs the T.

It's wise to use a front end protector like an Array Solutions AS-RXFEP in line
with the RX Antenna if it's close to the TX antenna. An Preamp like a KD9SV
BF981 can also prove useful as well as an Array Solutions W3NQN brick wall
Broadcast Band filter if local stations overload the front end on 160.

It's pretty annoying when an email or text or IM contains *so much*
malformed spew that I have to struggle and re-read several times to
transform it into something I can understand, but if I can apply quick
mental error correction with a minimum of effort, it's way easier to 'let
it go' than it is to gripe about it. I'm sure occasionally people even
transmit typos in CW. Forgiveness and tolerance are pretty nice things.

(Personally I find ordinary, everyday verbal abuse of the language (where
phones aren't even involved) FAR more obnoxious, like using the word ask

Typos or improper spelling or the incorrect words are always inevitable.
Proper grammar errors are yet more likely.

2013-09-12 Thread Don Wilhelm
While I can be forgiving for most of those kind of errors, it saddens me
when I run across a communication from someone who is supposed to be
teaching my grandchildren filled with incorrect usage of the language,
including spelling errors, errors in sentence structure or syntax errors.

I have noticed that in newspaper quotes, emails, and 'official' school
communications. If those educators are either so sloppy to create such
errors (or really do not understand the rules of the language), I get a
negative impression of the level of communications skills that are being
taught to our children.

That has nothing to do with the typos that are caused by 'keyboards'
that are too small for fingers.

I am careful when I write a formal letter. Here I'm talking and I often
notice, with a chuckle, how I sometimes mangle the English (or is it
American?) language.
