Thanks Don, I started on the Transmit Signal Tracing & did the receieve
signal tracing as suggested at point 5 in the preparation for transmitter
signal tracing section. VFO & BFO frequencies checked out ok.
I'll try your suggestion of changing the crystal frequency & carry on with
the transmit signal tracing.

Brian,

If the test oscillator crystal is at 10 MHz, it *should* be very
attenuated by the 40 meter Low Pass Filter.
The K2 40 meter LPF cutoff is in the range of 8.5 MHz, so it cannot be
expected to pass a 10 MHz signal.

If you have a crystal in the 40 meter band, you could substitute it for
the 10 MHz crystal and try those measurements again.

If you do not have such a crystal, go forward in the Troubleshooting
procedure to Transmit Signal Tracing and try those steps. Do not skip the
oscillator checks - VFO and BFO that are in the Receiver Signal Tracing
part of the tests.

One thing about the Signal Tracing steps - work in the order listed, one
point depends on the one before it being OK.
Once you come to the first step where the output is significantly (greater
than 10%) lower than the Expected value, stop because you have just found
the output side of the failure point - it will be fruitless to go on to
other check points.

I used silver solder in the audio section, of course, but now I'm concerned.
Should I have used it in the RF sections too?

My LV leads are oxygen-free (although the high vacuum pump can be a bit of a
pain) and the mains cables are carefully laid true N-S to minimize the
distortion caused by the interaction of the Earth's magnetic field with the
AC.

Thank everyone for you suggestions. Here is what I found and did to fix it.
I disassembled my station and then started connecting one thing at a time
until I found the problem.
It turned out that my Signalink USB sound card was what was picking up the
feed back and introducing it back into the K3.
I put ferrite beads on everything and also did the aluminum tape mod on the
signalink.
All is well now. I can run full power with no problems.

no ground wire is needed and tune up and band changing takes maybe 20
seconds seconds or less. I have used a portable tripod that I found at

Unless you have a way to remotely cycle the AC supply to the KPA500,
you're "SOL". I have a relay on the 220VAC supply going to mine, which
runs off the K3's ACC 12V output, so if I power-cycle the K3, the
KPA500 follows. It is necessary once in a while, when the firmware
hangs.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 with Alex Loop

2013-11-03 Thread Doug Turnbull
Dave,

This is a good question. I have had line cords which came within
inches of the antenna and did not seem problematic but a fan a foot distant
was. The one thing is that you can tune in a station and try moving the
antenna.I know this is not quantitative - these are just my experiences
in a timber frame home.

Of course this is not a problem on top a mountain and so maybe the
compensations allowed by height and being in the open compensate to a large
degree for the antennas deficiencies. The Alex Loop is very portable and
can be set up inside a room and it works but I had to work for most of my
QSOs. The one exception being at the tail end of a contest when the big
guns were hungry in the USA and I worked fourteen Ws running ten watts and
the Alex Loop inside the shack. It is impractical to be separated from
the Alex Loop by any distance as one needs to tune the antenna if you change
frequency by more than 20 kHz or so. Still I could operate and monitor
from both my sister's and brother's spare bedrooms. It is neat to be
running the KX1 with four watts and work across the Atlantic with a small
inside antenna - it can also require some effort.

73 Doug EI2CN

P.S. QRP with my 4 element SteppIR at 24M / 80 feet is not the same as QRP
with an Alex Loop and 5 Watts.

Ken,

It sounds like you are using the "Enhanced Cabling" as shown on page 22
of the KPA500 manual (and using both the DB15HD cable and the PA Keying
cable).
If so, have you adhered to the *IMPORTANT* note at the bottom of Figure
4 and also the last sentence in the text above that figure? In other
words, do you have the Key Line Interrupter installed?

You may either remove the PA keying cable(s), or install the Key Line
Interrupter at the K3 end of the DB15HD cable.

If you built your own cable, you may remove the connection at pin 10 if
you wish to retain the PA Keying (PTT) cables. (Make certain your
homebrew cable does not connect pins 4, 6, 7, and 8)

If that is not your problem, you should contact support for additional
assistance.

the PA key jack on the KPA500. (All per Elecraft Manual). This seems
to be working OK.

I also have a PR6-10 preamp connected to the K3 with the control wire
going to the appropriate pin of a separate 15 pin plug and a low band
receive antenna connected to the preamp in line. DIGOUT is set to ON
for 6m, 10m & 12m and OFF for all other bands. If I connect this plug
to the ACC connector of the K3 by itself (no cable connected to the
KPA500) it works as it should (preamp on for 6m, 10m, & 12m and off
for the other bands) and the external receive ant for 160m works as it
should.

When I connect this plug to the Y cable, it still works as it should,
but when I add the AUX cable on the other half of the Y cable, the
external receive antenna is disconnected, which seems to indicate that
a signal from the KPA-500 is turning on the preamp and stopping the
low band antenna from passing through. If I disconnect the AUX cable
to the KPA500, everything reverts to working as ir should.

  KAT3 internal ATU
KXV3A RX Ant, IF Out and Xverter interface
  K144XV 2 meter module
copy of Fred Cady's K3 book, 2nd edition
the factory manual (if I can find it)

and K312VMDKT

Updates include:
  8 volt regulator filter capacitor
  power meter diode upgrades D36 & D37
  new firmware
upgraded 8.215 trap with robust components
gold pins: 6 pins for 12V, RF board to KPAIO3 riser
gold pins: 6 pins for 12V, KPA3 to KPAIO3 riser
gold pins: front panel, P30 and P35

their summary reports that the radio meets or exceeds all factory
specifications, and I'll include a copy.

Current prices for this in kit form is $4262 -- asking $3,300 with FedEx
Ground shipping/insurance included to the lower 48. Non-smoking home and
except for a couple of rub marks--that you won't see unless you're looking

working as expected.

Gary,
I have a KX3 and KX1 and have operated both portable from Connecticut
and from home in EI using this antenna on CW.I have spanned the ocean in
both directions while operating with the antenna inside the shack. This is
a thrill every time. What I find good about the AlexLoop is the ability to
set up in some one's home and make a few QSOs. It is however no wonder
antenna and in fairness no Gotham vertical claims are made for it. I would
be very sure that the Buddipole is the better antenna but one would want to
try them side by side. The Alex Loop does fold up into a nice small case.
Have you considered the new SteppIR CrankIR. I think this is a much better
antenna when compared to the AlexLoop. Having said all of this I am
pleased to have the AlexLoop and it does allow me to get on while travelling
without outside wires. You must be selective in where the AlexLoop is
positioned; too close to some wires or metal and it may not perform as you
would like.

Subject: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 with Alex Loop

First thanks to all those that responded to my request to see a KX3 - that
was achieved this weekend.

I'm looking to setup a light weight SOTA setup. In addition to the KX3, I
also saw a mini-buddipole and while it seems to be well manufactured and
comes in a nice case it weighs about 2.5lbs, plus mast with either guys or
tripod. An end-fez sloper would be extremely light but here in southern CA
our peaks are short on trees, thus requiring at least one telescoping pole.
This has led me to consider the Alex Loop - appears very light, fast to
setup, no need to get it more than 5ft of the ground. Being a mag loop
should help with QRM at local urban QTH as well.

I'd love to hear from anyone using the Alex Loop with a KX3, and if you
tried other SOTA type antennas as well all the better.

[Elecraft] K3 - PR6-10 - KPA500 not working together

2013-11-03 Thread Ken Kontor

Help !

I just added a KPA500 to my K3, P3 setup.

I have an interface question / problem.

I connected the TX keying line connector to my K3, then the Y cable,
then the AUX cable to my KPA500. I am using the key out from the K3 to
the PA key jack on the KPA500. (All per Elecraft Manual). This seems to
be working OK.

I also have a PR6-10 preamp connected to the K3 with the control wire
going to the appropriate pin of a separate 15 pin plug and a low band
receive antenna connected to the preamp in line. DIGOUT is set to ON for
6m, 10m & 12m and OFF for all other bands. If I connect this plug to the
ACC connector of the K3 by itself (no cable connected to the KPA500) it
works as it should (preamp on for 6m, 10m, & 12m and off for the other
bands) and the external receive ant for 160m works as it should.

When I connect this plug to the Y cable, it still works as it should,
but when I add the AUX cable on the other half of the Y cable, the
external receive antenna is disconnected, which seems to indicate that a
signal from the KPA-500 is turning on the preamp and stopping the low
band antenna from passing through. If I disconnect the AUX cable to the
KPA500, everything reverts to working as ir should.

Any ideas as to how to make these two devices work together ???

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-11-03 Thread Kevin

Good Morning,
Due to the time change for most of us in the US the nets' UTC times
have changed. Local times remain the same as always but the Zulu times
change. So just remember to get on at the same time you always do and
you'll be fine (except where Daylight Savings Time has never
encroached). Seeing a two hour time change as I drove over the Hoover
Dam was disconcerting :)

Frequencies: 14050 +/- kHz and 7045 +/- kHz

Twenty meter net is at 3 PM PST or PDT while the forty meter net is at 6
PM PST or PDT.

These times may change in the near future as the sun continues its move
southward.

73,
Kevin. KD5ONS

Now to keep repairing files after the crash this morning.
   KJR.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 with Alex Loop

2013-11-03 Thread Chip Stratton
Hi Gary -

I've been using the AlexLoop with my KX3 on SOTA, and it has worked
extremely well for me. The only real downside to it is expense, but if you
can get past that you should be very happy with it.

I usually activate with W5ODS who uses an EARCHI end fed with a 32 foot
telescoping pole. He seems to get slightly better signal reports (very
uncontrolled observation), but it does take a little bit longer for him to
set up, and of course he has to carry the pole - though it hasn't seemed to
be a problem even when bushwhacking.

Of course when doing SOTA, CW at least, there is never a dearth of
contacts, so even if a wire solution were more efficient in the end, it
doesn't really matter much when activating.

It isn't too hard to find the area of the sweet spot when tuning on
receive. I find I usually want to have the preamp on +20dB and the filter
wide on 20m and above to be able to easily hear the increase in atmospheric
noise while tuning the loop since it is usually so RF quiet on peaks. Once
you are tuned, you can turn the preamp off - the signals come booming in.
During the final tune with transmit, I do fine using some dits and the bar
graph on the KX3, others like to use the numerical indication that shows
when pushing the TUNE button (with the ATU disabled of course).

I forgot to mention the frequency. It’s the standard one, 14.3035 MHz.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 VFWD reading in watts

2013-11-03 Thread Don Wilhelm

Don,

I don't know the exact formula, but I can say that the power is
proportional to the voltage squared.
If you really want to do that, I would suggest that you set the power to
several different levels and compare the square of the VFWD to the power
output - see what the common factor is and use that - or make a graph.

If you have the KPA500, I would thnk determining the power out is even
easier - the KPA500 displays the power, and that will be correct *if*
the SWR is low.

If I knew this reference calculation then I could eliminate my W2 from the
system. I guess I could do lots of measurements to get close but if some knows
and can share it would be a lot quicker.
