Elecraft output stages are very well protected. In general, I feel
comfortable running them "balls to the wall" with keydown modes, with
all the lights lit. With well matched antennas, I run keydown modes at
full power. If the output stage gets warm, the fan will run faster, and
if that isn't enough, the rig will back off the drive.

Remember that the WSJT modes are "weak signal" modes, NOT low power
modes. There is a big difference. We may get lots of distance per watt
and be happy with QRP for easy paths, but for the most difficult paths
(EME, transcontinental 160M), great digital ops pile on the watts and
use their best antennas. I do a lot of QRP, but I also know when to turn
on the big amp. :)

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes?

2014-02-21 Thread Matt Zilmer
In Navy-Marine Corps MARS, we use a *lot* of digital modes, including
PSK31 and a double handful of others. On this KX3/KXPA100, I normally
use no more than 25W for PSK and a little more for some of the others.
On MT63, I use 30W. Most data modes don't need a lot of SNR to
decode. It also depends on transmission length. If I'm going to
transmit MT63 for five minutes straight, I run the power down to 20W.

I'm not sure there is a recommended output power setting for data
modes using the KX3/KXPA100, but you can find out yourself by
monitoring the PA.X temp on the VFO B display (your room temperature
is different from others'). If you see the temp rise to more than
you're comfortable with, back down on the power. Using the settings
stated above keeps the KXPA temp at comfortable levels at this
station, usually < 50C, but sometimes a bit over. The amp will
protect itself by lowering output power if the temp runs too hot. Like
everything Elecraft makes, the hardware and software are very robust.

2014-02-21 Thread WA7SPY
I am cleaning up my shack and in excessive to my needs I have for sale a HP
8657A digital signal generator 0.1-1040 MHZ. There is a minor issue with the
attenuator board. It stops at -113 db. I use a 20 db pad to make up the
difference and other than that the unit works well. I will include the 20 db
pad. Asking $400 plus shipping. I will include a two tone generator for PL
tones for another $100.

2014-02-21 Thread Jack Brindle
You might want to say how you have the KAT powered. In my station I have a
relay-switch power panel that I built. The relay is powered by the K3’s 12V
output jack. When the K3 turns on, it powers the relay, which the switches 12V
power to the various station boxes, including the KAT500. By the time the K3 is
ready to talk to the KAT, it is awake and listening, as is the KRC2, P3, etc...

My experience says either/or. But I did mine in reverse order of cost. Get

Re: [Elecraft] Buying a new K3/100 kit - Top 3 options?

2014-02-21 Thread Fred Jensen
Arlen, I have a P3. I bought it as a toy, my wife does needlepoint
which is as expensive as ham radio can be, we have an "equal hobby
allowance" policy between us, and she'd been buying quite a bit and
going to a number of classes. I assembled it, spent some time learning
to use it, and far from being a "toy," it has changed just about every
aspect of my operating habits.

I did not include it in my list to you because it is a separate device
and not an internal K3 option. If it's within your budget and you can
have 4 options instead of 3, I'd get a P3.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Order of Purchase

2014-02-21 Thread Fred Jensen
Well, if you need the KAT3 to operate 100W with your antenna(s), then
I'd think you want it first. If your antenna(s) present a suitable
load, you really don't need the KAT at all, so I'd go with the KPA. You
might want the tuner for operation away from your station, add it second.

The KPA comes with some hardware [shield plate and maybe a stiffener
bracket], it's been so long I really don't remember. Someone here on
the list will, I'm sure.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 on digital modes.

2014-02-21 Thread Dave Barr

Hi Dennis

The is a another consideration for digital modes if you are planning to
work RTTY as well as other digital modes. In setting up my K2 a long
time ago, I found much better results with narrow filtering could be
achieved by using an audio frequency pair (mark and space tones) lower
than the 2125-2295 standard suggested for most RTTY work. Using MMTTY,
I chose 915 for the mark frequency mark, although using 1275 or 1445
should be fine. With the high tones I was not able to get flat band
pass shaping that was similar between the 15 meter-and-up and the 20
meters-and-down conversion arrangements that the K2 has. Some will
warn you not to use low tones because of opposite sideband leak, but I
have never had that problem, even when checking with a second RX in the
shack. I aligned my narrowest filter as low as 40 hz (nominally- it's
actually much wider than that) and it worked well in crowded RTTY
contest conditions. I ended up with nominal filter widths of 40, 75 and
135 hz. For working PSK and JT65 and 9 you will probably want another
filter set up as wide as possible.

Re: [Elecraft] Buying a new K3/100 kit - Top 3 options?

2014-02-21 Thread Phil Wheeler

What I meant to send:

Mine is arriving today. I pretty much maxed it out
*except* for the sub-receiver, a personal choice.
Filters are .400. 1.0, 2.1, 2.8 and 6. I did get
the TCXO option -- mostly in case I eventually get
transverters. Also the KXV3 since my local ham
friend showed me the utility of a panadapter (so
the P3 is coming, too).

But my first choices would have been 100 W, ATU
and 400 Hz filter (home antennas will need ATU
unless I use a manual tuner and change it for each
band). I have the K2, qrp or 100, which will be my
main portable rig -- usually qrp for less power reqd.

Hey, big package just arrived, so ... .

or 1k filter for it. I have 13k, 2.8k,1.8k, and .25k.
3) and I like the KAT3 even though I don't need it with my home station but I
plan to take it portable

That is it. Sorry for late arrival.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 revs 4.83/1.38/1.58

2014-02-21 Thread Jack Brindle
The KAT500 needs to be powered on whenever the K3 is on in order to avoid
loading the Auxbus. It can be powered up at the same time, but must be on
before the K3 completes its initialization.

The KPA500 has no restriction, and can be powered on any time before or after
the K3 is turned on.

Re: [Elecraft] Buying a new K3/100 kit - Top 3 options?

2014-02-21 Thread Arlen Fletcher

Greetings Everyone,

I have to say I'm a bit overwhelmed with the number of responses I've received
to my question about what options to get with a new K3/100. I expected a few
replies, but nothing like what I've seen! Thank you to those that have
responded both on-list and off. I very much appreciate the input. I've tallied
the suggestions and here's what came out:

#1 option: KAT-3
#2 option: KXV3A
#3 option: KRX3

Almost everyone recommended filters of one flavor or another, 2 people
recommended the P3, and one person recommended the KTXCO3-1.

I've received the final OK from the "financial officer" (XYL), so as soon as my
rich Uncle comes through I'll be placing an order!

[Elecraft] Revised K2 operating manual (in German)

2014-02-21 Thread Daniel Schlieper

Dear K2 users,

there is a revised version of the K2 operating manual in German available.
You may find the text at http://qrpproject-blog.de/?p=64 .

The manual is a compilation of operating instructions and tips from a wide
range of sources (mainly Elecraft's manuals, of course).

Feel free to print, sell or translate the text. See

Re: [Elecraft] Buying a new K3/100 kit - Top 3 options?

2014-02-21 Thread Ethan Miller K8GU
Arlen,

I agree that the KXV3(A) is very useful in general, also. My first
K3/100 only had the 400-Hz roofing filter option and I bought the
KXV3A a few months later so I could hook up Beverages. I would
strongly encourage you to consider at least one roofing filter that's
matched to your preferred mode/bandwidth so you can really exploit the
awesomeness of the K3. I would think that for SSB DX, the 2.1 kHz or
1.8 kHz might be useful.

I don't consider auto-tuners a must-have accessory...but, all of my
antennas are matched farther down the feeder and the amp I'm using
right now has tuned input. That's the last item on my list of K3
upgrades (the next, and next-to-last, one is the sub RX)...

Have fun...it doesn't take much to really enjoy the radio...add the
options later!

73,

--Ethan, K8GU/3.

2014-02-21 Thread Stephen Prior
Chuck,

I seem to remember reading that the order of turning on the K-line is
important. I always turn on the KAT500, then the KPA500 followed by the
K3/P3. I have not had any issues doing things in that order. Maybe this
is why you had the 'problem'?

on the K3, the KAT500 went to the pretuned setting on 40M and then I turned

I said one word and the KPA500 went to standby. No red lights. I returned
