[Elecraft] K3 S-meter question

2014-04-04 Thread Arlen Fletcher
I’ve just completed building my K3/10 (S/N 8115)!!! The PA3 and sub-receiver
are sitting here but not built/installed yet. Everything seems to work fine -
completed the TX gain calibration successfully, and the filter setup too, of
course. However, I’m puzzled by the how the S-meter is behaving. It seems to be
inversely proportional to the RF gain. With the RF gain all the way CCW, all
segments of the S-meter are lit. With the RF gain at 12 o’clock, half of the
segments are lit. Changing bands has no apparent effect on the S-meter reading,
and it’s rare that any but the strongest stations has any effect on the meter.
And, with the RF gain fully CW, a few segments are lit (depending upon the
noise level in the band). This seems backwards to me, but this is my first HF
rig, so maybe it’s supposed to behave this way? Maybe I have some config
setting messed up?

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this!

Thanks!

[Elecraft] PX3 vs. PC+sound card

2014-04-04 Thread Wayne Burdick
Jeff Scaparra wrote:

> How is [the PX3] any better than using the IQ out and computer?

Hi Jeff,

A PC can work well, assuming it's fitted with a high-performance sound card,
and that you're careful with cables and system grounding. This is sometimes
hard to do, especially in a portable situation.

But the PX3 has a true 200-kHz span, and in most cases it will out-perform
sound cards in terms of dynamic range. The PX3 also has very low noise thanks
to an optimal choice of A-to-D converter (most of them have in-band noise humps
that come up above the noise floor). It also has special input circuitry that
rejects common-mode noise between the RX I/Q jacks on the radio and the PX3,
without the need for isolation transformers.

Beyond that, there are some operators who prefer to have the spectral display
right there where the action is, next to the radio. Turning on the PC can then
be optional. The PC can still be used with the PX3 since we provide a way to
daisy-chain both the control port (ACC1) and RX I/Q signals.

[Elecraft] Minimalist Mobile with the Elecraft KX3

2014-04-04 Thread Wayne Burdick
If you're serious about using the KX3 (or other rigs) mobile, read the
excellent treatment of the subject by Matt, W6NIA:

   http://www.elecraft.com/manual/Rev-B1-1.6-KX3-Mobile-Owners.pdf

But if you just dabble in mobile occasionally, like me, or you're on a budget,
you might want to try the minimalist approach presented here. You'll be a few
dB shy of an optimal signal, but it'll be a good time nonetheless, and it'll
set you back just a couple of hours and around $100.

* * *

N6KR's MINIMAL-MOBILE SYSTEM

RIG

While you can use just about anything for mobile operation, I'm focusing on the
KX3 here. At less than two pounds, the KX3 has the advantage that when you get
to your destination, you can take it hiking, even use it pedestrian mobile. If
you need more than 12 W while using it in the car (or at home, or for travel),
you can add an amp like the KXPA100.

MIC

I used the Elecraft MH3, which is well-suited to this application. It's small,
has a great sound, and plenty of output to maximize S/N ratio. I found myself
using the UP/DN buttons a lot rather than the VFO knob.

RIG LOCATION AND MOUNTING

Much has been written about Ram Mounts and the like that work with the KX3. To
keep things simple, I just placed the rig directly above the steering wheel,
wedged between the dashboard and windshield. Next time I go out I'll add a bit
of velcro (or something), since it did slide around a bit and could become a
projectile in a worst-case scenario. But a simple friction fit was fine for the
maiden voyage. I also found that this location worked well ergonomically. Since
the rig is so small, it didn't obscure any part of my view of the road. Having
it above the steering wheel also placed the mic jack to the left, allowing me
to easily use the mic with my left hand. The metal tab on the MH3 fit into a
left-side console vent, so I could hang the mic when I wasn't using it.

SPEAKER SYSTEM

The KX3's internal speaker is not intended for use in noisy environments, and
you can't legally wear headphones while driving (in most places). Yet I really
wanted speakers, and I wanted stereo. Just about every vehicle has an FM
stereo, including my Honda CRV, so I used an FM modulator (Monster Mobile
RadioPlay 300, $25 at Amazon). You just pick a clear FM channel (107.9 MHz in
my case), tune your car stereo to it, power the modulator from the 12V
accessory jack, and insert it's 3.5-mm plug into the KX3's headphone jack.
Instant stereo with lots of audio power, with reasonably low noise. One nice
thing about doing it this way is that the car stereo's volume and tone controls
can be used, and they're always within easy reach.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (12 V AND GROUND)

Matt (W6NIA) went to great lengths to Do the Right Thing in terms of grounding,
using short battery cable runs, etc. I didn't have much time for this exercise,
and after all it's supposed to be Minimalist, so I didn't attempt to ground by
any means other than what was provided by the antenna coax and the 12 V system.
(Purists are surely cringing as they read this--my apologies.) Keeping with the
spirit of the project, I picked up a 2-to-1 12-V car accessory adapter at Radio
Shack, into which I plugged the rig and FM modulator. Worked like a charm, with
very little engine noise heard. I touched things up a bit using the KX3's noise
blanker and noise reduction. Had there been significant engine noise, I would
have tried setting MENU:RX SHFT to 8.0.

BANDS

I like 40 and 17 meters for mobile operation. 17 m is not a contest band; a
more relaxed, less competitive spirit pervades, and it's great for both DXing
and single-hop rag-chews. You can also do pretty well on this band with a
physically short antenna, since a full-height vertical would be only 234/18.1 =
13 feet. 40 m is excellent for regional QSOs and nets by day, and DX by night.
The combination of the two covers the bases pretty well. If I had to pick three
more bands, they'd be 20, 15, and 10 meters.

ANTENNA

I spent some time perusing the reviews of HF mobile antennas on eHam.net.
Strong opinions are the rule. Since my goal was something easy to install and
remove, not to mention inexpensive, I limited my scope to under-$100 fixed-band
whips that were in stock at HRO (Ham Radio Outlet, www.hamradio.com). I ended
up with two Hustler whips that are surprisingly well made for the price: the
RM-40 ($25) and RM-17 ($20). I perched one of them at a time on the company's
short mast, the MO-4 ($20). This gave my antenna a total length of about 56",
counting the mag mount. While this antenna won't beat a Texas Mega Coil With
BBQ Attachment, it seems to do the job.

ANTENNA TUNER

An antenna tuner is a huge help while operating mobile with a short whip. (I
used the KXAT3 -- the KX3's internal ATU. The KXPA100 amp has a similar
built-in ATU option.) Bypass the ATU while doing initial adjustments of antenna
length to find the lowest SWR. Then put the ATU back

[Elecraft] KAT500 Wish list

2014-04-04 Thread Ron Leech
I would like to see a TUNER ON in the KAT500 remote program like the KPA500 has
AMP ON in its. Having a check mark by Bypassed is ok But It would be better if
it had TUNER ON. Other than that It works 100% and love it.

Re: [Elecraft] New KX3 Accessory

2014-04-04 Thread Slava Baytalskiy
Does the PX3 attach to the KX3 in some sort of a rigid configuration?
So it becomes sort of one unit?
I imagine folks using this combo in the filed would like something like that.
Perhaps similar to this PAE-Kx31 heat sink with side handles, only extending
sideways to include the PX3?
Otherwise it might be a bit too much to handle when you're not using a real
shack desk or something...

Just an idea..

Re: [Elecraft] DB-36 issue

2014-04-04 Thread Don Wilhelm

David,

Check *every* connection in your antenna system - or better yet, re-do
all the connections. If you have any purely mechanical connections that
are not soldered, those are suspicious.
Connections with wire nuts are *supposed* to be "gas tight", but in
outdoor conditions they usually are not after a period of good
operation. That 'dit' is enough to break through the oxidation for a
short time, but it will return after a while.
Loose PL259/SO239 connections will behave similarly - those should be a
bit tighter than 'finger tight', so lightly twist them a bit more with
pliers. If you have PL-259 connectors exposed to the weather, they
should be not only tight, but then wrapped with electrical tape followed
by a layer of coax seal to keep the elements out - the only reason for
the electrical tape is so you can disconnect them later - direct
application of coax seal works too, but you have a very difficult time
getting it off the connection.

Due diligence will find it.

If you want to know what it does beforehand, take at look at the P3
manual. Functional overlap will be better than 90%.

Note: The PX3 requires baseband I/Q signals (available at the KX3's RX I/Q
jack); it can't be used with the K3's 8.2-MHz I.F. output.

Re: [Elecraft] IBM's resources (OT)

2014-04-04 Thread Jim Campbell

I heard the same story about JOVIAL being an acronym for "Jules' Own ...
". Also heard that Jules designed it while walking the beach (forgot
which beach). Santa Monica, perhaps?

I did some programming in JOVIAL while working on some software for the
central computer on the AWACS aircraft. IBM's Federal Systems Division
had the contract for the central processor and its operating system. Got
to fly many hours on the first AWACS. Got my IBM Flight Test Wings award
for flying more than 50 hours flight testing IBM hardware/software. Also
got flight (hazardous duty) pay.

The most peculiar thing to me about JOVIAL was there was no provision
for I/O. You had to use the DIRECT function which dropped you into
Assembler Language. You performed the I/O in assembler and returned to
JOVIAL until the next need for I/O.

Yes. There was a thread on this subject a few weeks ago. I use a large
[~150 ft elements] dipole fed with ladder line and a DXE balun. It's
been up long enough that the connections between the elements and the
line [copper split nuts] have corroded. At random times, especially
when I haven't been transmitting for awhile, the receiver gets very
quiet and the noise disappears off the bottom of the P3 baseline. One
dit will restore things.

[Elecraft] KX3 Heat sink from Fred Meier, VE7FMN

2014-04-04 Thread T Gahagan
Received Fred’s heat sink yesterday and installed it on the KX3 today.
Beautifully done and fits like a glove. It took about 10 minutes to install and
the powder coat finish matches the radio nicely, and all covers still fit
nicely. Thank for a great job Fred. Now I’ll try to do some thermal testing
over the next several days.

2014-04-04 Thread Fred Jensen
Hmmm ... In the days of "Big Blue Iron," I don't think I ever saw a
computer room that didn't have some card boxes on top of a file cabinet
near the doors with a sign, "FOR 1401 EMULATION ON MIDS."

Regarding JOVIAL, said to be an acronym from, "Jules' Own Version of the
International Algorithmic Language," its syntax is rampant with dollar
sign characters. "Jules" was Dr. Jules Schwartz. Statements end with
them, subscripts are surrounded by them, they're everywhere.

JOVIAL was for many years the official USAF language for operational
software [may still be for all I know, Ada never seemed to get enough
airspeed for takeoff]. It was a good definition of "cash cow" for him
and his company. I met Dr. Schwartz at a conference once, and asked him
if there was any significance to the prevalence of the dollar sign in
JOVIAL syntax. He just grinned at me.

I've occasionally wondered if Eric and Jules were related, however it's
a pretty common name.

My exposure to "big iron" in that era was on a military project where a
special compiler for the JOVIAL language (look it up on Wiki and follow
all the trails) was contracted for with a specific "name" company - one
of the Air Force's "favorites" - but to the annoyance of the rest of the
project managers they couldn't deliver on time and when they finally did
it didn't work (I had to deal with that "up close and personal"). The
Air Force finally took it away from them and the Blue-Suiters did the

Actually, the KRX3 sub-receiver for my K3 is on my "to buy" list. As of today,

1. K3 sub-receiver, KRX3 plus needed roofing filters.
2. KXPA100 plus antenna tuner.
3. 2-Meter option for KX3 when it is available.
4. As of today, the PX3.

Re: [Elecraft] Sub RX and P3

2014-04-04 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Andy,

First it's easier to see what's going on if you turn off the A and B
markers. You just want to see the cursors to get a better handle on how they
operate. And you want to activate the VFO-B cursor in the P3 menu.

VFO-A has a green cursor. VFO-B has a Magenta cursor. There is no separate
cursor for the SUB RX. It is just the VFO-B cursor. If you choose SPLIT
there is an additional cursor in Red. The Red cursor denotes your transmit
frequency when it differs from VFO-A. You'll also see the Red cursor if you
choose XIT. The Red cursor may be the same width as the magenta cursor so it
might be invisible when operating SPLIT. If you fiddle with the bandwidth
knob after pushing BSET you'll be able see the difference between the Red
and Magenta Cursors.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Ergonomics

2014-04-04 Thread Fred Jensen
Probably not, Steve. I use a Pigknob to control my K3 but not for any
reasons dealing with K3 "ergonomic deficiencies." I contest with N1MM
and do occasionally type a frequency into the CALL field to control the
radio, and N1MM sends for me, but beyond that, I use the controls on the
radio. I've tried a couple of software packages but gave them up,
somehow it just "wasn't radio" for me. YMMV [actually, it sounds like
it does :-)]

Too many Phils! :-)

Another cool thing about the KX3 is that RX I/Q output port. Since there is no
KXP3 (coming soon...? Maybe) I run the RX I/Q output into the Line In port on
my computer and run the free software package NaP3. I'm using an Apple iMac
with 27" display, so I have a very nice display of a chunk of band. Using the
KX3's Split and Sub features together, I can see where there are holes in a DX
pileup, and/or jump right on the frequency of the last guy the DX station is
working. Combining this feature with the ability to use the KPA500 and the
KAT500 makes the KX3 a very, very spiffy rig. Just like having a K3 with the
P3. Almost. Kinda. :-)

K3 will do "dual watch" too, if you add the KRX3 sub receiver module. Costs a
bit more, but is more flexible than the KX3 dual watch feature.

Re: [Elecraft] Sub RX and P3

2014-04-04 Thread Stan Gibbs, KR7C
Ed,
You are confusing "markers" and "cursors". The VFO A receive frequency is
denoted by a green "cursor" and VFO B by a red cursor (when SPLIT is
active).

The markers, MKRA (green) and MKRB (magenta), are used with the Select
button to QSY the K3, but they do not necessarily indicate the active
frequency of their respective VFO except when that button is pressed. Page
16 of the Rev D manual has the full details.

If you put the rig into SPLIT mode, you can see all 4 indicators at once on
the P3 screen if you want.

Re: [Elecraft] Sub RX and P3

2014-04-04 Thread Bob
The second receiver IF really isn't showing up on the P3, you are only
seeing the IF from the main receiver. However you do get to see some very
nice visual effects on top of that IF display. VFO-B will show up in
magenta and will be the approximate width of the IF filter selected. If
you have SUB-rx enabled, then it is controlled by VFO b, and its filter
width will establish the width of the magenta display. While It is colored
magenta, it will turn red if you have SPLIT on (because you are going to
transmit on that VFO B setting).

Heaven help you if you are working DX in split and don't see red -- the "UP
Police" will be on you in a blink of an eye!

[Elecraft] P3 birdy

2014-04-04 Thread KD7PY
Now that I have a much lower noise floor I see on the P3 a birdy that tracks
the VFO up and down as I tune.
On the P3 screen I see a birdy that track the VFO

On 6 meters it is about 48 khz above the VFO freq. but on 10 - 160 meters
it is below the VFO freq. 48 khz.

changed the if cable between the K3 & the P3 ,, No change..

the strength of the birdy is 15 DBM above the noise floor which is -125 dbm

don't know just where it seams to be leaking out.. looks like it comes from
the K3.. don't know if I need to do a lead dress inside the K3 or where?

any ideas ?

thanks Ed KD7PY ex K7WIA

[Elecraft] Sub RX and P3

2014-04-04 Thread ANDY NEHAN
Just got the Sub RX and I must say it looks tasty. However, I am puzzled by the
display on the P3 (another tasty toy I would not be without). I have read the
KE7X tour de force on the Elecraft kit and the P3 manual and the other Elecraft
manuals and unless I am going soggy in the brain department (golly I do hope
not - I still have so much to do) my P3 display puzzles me.

The sub RX shows up in magenta (I seem to recall KE7X calls it cyan but trust
me its magenta) on the P3 but when, and only when, I put the K3 into SPLIT mode
the magenta bar on the P3 (which shows what the Sub RX is doing) has a central
highlighted portion which is really bright. When I move out of SPLIT its a
standard magenta.

I accept that this is a really usefull way of telling me I am in SPLIT mode but
I cant find a reference to it anywhere - so please put me out of my misery,
where is this reflected in the documentation?

[Elecraft] KX3 Airplane

2014-04-04 Thread Roger Klein
Alan,

I took my KX3 round trip from Austin-Detroit-Newburgh last month on Delta as
carry-on baggage, and I had no issues whatsoever. The KX3 went though the
X-Ray in a case inside a backpack, TSA did not make me take it out, nor did
they bother to inspect it.

I even had my Trail-friendly End-Fedz antenna packed with it...again no
issue (they might have thought I would use it as a garrote! ;-)

2014-04-04 Thread Phil Hystad
KX3 has dual-watch and the K3 doesn't. I would like to use my KX3 for DX that
often operates split and so far working without also listening on the split TX
frequency is giving me a clear disadvantage. This is all CW, not SSB.

Since I only have the KX3/10 right now, I am thinking that I could use it with
my KPA500 when I am operating at home. I have not yet acquired the KXPA100.

If there is a better alternative (yes, buying the Sub-RX is better but that is
future too) then let me know. I don't particular like the REV feature for
switching TX/RX but it is a cheap alternative but just not as nice as
dual-watch (or, SubRX).

Re: [Elecraft] OT: application of directional Quad in UHF

2014-04-04 Thread David Christ
At 70 cm element sizes are small enough that self supporting quad elements can
be made with number 12 or 14 solid copper wire. Putting a break in such an
element is quite simple. Also at that frequency a quad cam be built on a spine
which is much easier than what has to be done at HF. Also something we have
done here which works quite well at 70 cm is to use a quad driven element and
rod type reflector and directors.

Much the same, Ed. My K3 is much newer (#8004),
but I've had a K2/100 with which I'm still pleased
-- partially because I can repair anything in it
and add some subtle improvements (I still have a
K2 to-do list). K2 is still a very capable rig,
but now in my 61st year as a ham, I decided to
treat myself to the best. I also have K1, KX1 and
KX3 -- and the FT-817 in a box.

Today I'm recabling my shack (RG-8X becomes RG-213
past the lightning arresters) to support the
KPA500/KAT500 which arrived on my doorstep
yesterday -- and also recabling to let the KAT500
do the antenna switching (mostly, I have 4
antennas, but the 30 m dipole gets least use and I
can't use high power there anyway).

My interest in the hobby has been high and low
over the years, but it is a great hobby. And
unlike my other hobby (photography) the
manufacturers don't do yearly updates -- fortunately!

[Elecraft] KX3/K3 and KPA500

Ah yes - the good old days of "big iron". In that era, my kid brother
KU2P/4X1AK was deeply involved in the data processing programming end of
the securities trading industry, and when an IBM client wanted something
that they could not provide, IBM would go through the same routine of
"we don't have anything like that, go see Andy Kane at ===..."

The
Air Force finally took it away from them and the Blue-Suiters did the
work in-house. Reminds me of all the problems that Oregon's Health Care

Re: [Elecraft] OT: application of directional Quad in UHF

2014-04-04 Thread Robert G Strickland

Johnny...
I have no experience with UHF quads, but I modeled, used and modified an
HF quad for over 15 years. I now use a SkyHawk HF triband yagi. Based on
that experience, quads require more mechanical effort for construction
and maintenance. The form factor for a yagi is two-dimensional, while
for a quad it is three-dimensional. Thus, packing, storage and transport
is potentially simpler for the yagi than for the quad. Feeding a yagi is
simpler than for a quad, because the yagi can use a solid driven
element, while the quad generally requires a break in the driven
element; this can complicate construction. Adding elements to a yagi
antenna is mechanically simpler than adding elements to a quad. So,
based on my HF experience - and thinking about UHF quads - I think
mechanical issues might be a significant difference. At UHF a 4/5
element yagi might be easier to deal with than a 3-el quad. My opinion.

Re: [Elecraft] Connecting CWSkimmer to my K3

2014-04-04 Thread Arie Kleingeld PA3A

Hi Mark,

A very simple and unexpensive solution that I use is:
- IF-softrock connected to the K3
- ASUS xonar D1 soundcard capable of 192kHz sampling, but a 96kHz rig
will do

- Software: LP bridge and NAP3-sdr

I connected the skimmer to a LP bridge internal comport, did the same
with N1MM logger and NAP3.
Makes a nice system altogether, thanks to the supersoftware. It all runs
on a old pentium IV.

(It also works great on a 3 yr old Laptop that just happens to have a
stereo mic at 192kHz.)

Re: [Elecraft] Connecting CWSkimmer to my K3

2014-04-04 Thread Bill Conwell
Hi Mark,

Coincidentally, I just got Skimmer running for first time this weekend, from
the IF of my K3.

You don’t need to sweat the sound card sampling rate if you run it off the
IF. The CW Skimmer software – in the K3 IF mode – only processes +/- 12 khz
around the frequency to which the K3 is tuned. So a sampling rate of 48 KHz
is more than you need. (But you do need a sound card with stereo mic or
line inputs – lots of laptops have only a mono mic input.)

I am having a problem with images on strong stations that I hope will cure
itself over time. (The CW Skimmer software does an on-going analysis of
balance between I and Q channels, and develops correction factors over time
to perform accurate I/Q balancing.)

My particular setup is an Ensemble II SDR ($92 assembled; $67 as a kit)
connected to the K3’s IF output. I set the CFGSR software (which controls
the SDR’s si570 synthesized oscillator) to 8227 KHz. (The K3 IF is at 8215
KHz.) I’ve tuned my K3 to 7.025 MHz and left it there since the weekend,
developing a flow of several hundred spots in that time.

Next on my project list is to try connecting the antenna directly to the
SDR, rather than driving the SDR from the K3 IF. For that, I ordered a used
E-MU 0204 external sound card off EBay this week - $101. It has a 192 KHz
sampling rate, which should allow band-wide skimming.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Heatsinks

2014-04-04 Thread Howard Hoyt
There has been a lot of talk recently regarding the KX3, thermal limits
and heatsinks.

Some of you may remember the heatsink design and pictures I originally
posted six months ago. I think I was one of the first to execute a
heatsink design for the KX3, but soon afterward my company machine shop
closed. In the intervening months I have done a lot of testing and
modeling to the KX3 thermal situation, and I'm now making them at a new
machine shop. Interestingly enough, concurrent with the release of a
couple of other heatsink designs recently, I have begun receiving quite
a few requests to make my heatsink design available for purchase. This
says to me there is a market for a heatsink not satisfied by the others,
so I'm within two weeks away from the first production run returning
from anodizing. This list isn't the place to post an advertisement, so
if you are interested in the PAE-Kx31 heatsink, please check it out at:

http://www.proaudioeng.com/?page_id=40

Considering all of the optional accessories coming out for the KX3, I
would say the experimenter spirit hasn't gone out of ham radio yet!

any selected bands the owner selects. Perhaps you have configured 60
meters out of the band rotation.

No need to extend the existing band button operation - it has already
been done.
See the menu item CONFIG: BND MAP - (K3 manual page 54) bands can be
excluded from the up and down band button operation.

The KX3 has the same capability.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - CW weighting difference vox/xmit

2014-04-04 Thread Don Wilhelm

"never a reaction from Elecraft" ???
Has this been brought to the attention of KX3support?

If it has only been mentioned on this reflector, it may have been
overlooked by support and the developers. If it was sent from Nabble,
there is even a greater chance that it could be overlooked because
responses sent from Nabble contain no reference information and the
subject lines are not usually sufficient to determine what is being
answered.

I do not recall any reference to this "issue" before, and my memory of
such things is usually pretty good.
This reflector is primarily for hams helping other hams. It is not the
best medium for reporting problems.

[Elecraft] Air travel with a KX3?

2014-04-04 Thread Alan Price
I am flying to Florida tomorrow. I want to take my KX3 and some wire for an
antenna on board. It is all in a small (12"X12"X4") case. I am flying
Southwest airlines. Will I have an issue with security? I have a copy of my
license in with the radio.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Ergonomics

2014-04-04 Thread John K3TN
I picture myself walking into a ham radio shop (remember the days when we
used to do that weekly?) and I go to the HF transceiver section and I see:

On the far left the are the tiny SDR boxes that you can only operate via a
computer and the front panel choices are all software and essentially
everyone can have their own front panel.

On the far left are the enormous TS-990 type transceivers where the front
panel includes every function you might ever need and several graphic
displays to show anything you might ever want to look at.

In between is a wide range of transceiver choices across the spectrum, from
tiny QRP radios with limited front panel functionality to medium sized
desktop transceivers with lots of (but not all) buttons on the front panel
and some menu functionality, etc.

As someone who likes to do Field Day and the occasional state QSO party from
a mobile environment, and does lots of DXing and contesting from the home
shack, and almost invariably uses computer logging as part of every
operation, I walked to the center left of that "store" and first checked out
the receivers and *then* played with the front panels - and the K3 won the
bakeoff.

I think that is what the Elecraft brand means - top notch receivers with
clean transmitters in small packages that are designed to be used with
computers an occasionally (or frequently) outside of the shack. That's where
I'd like to see the Elecraft resources stay focused.

There really is no shortage of good choices on the left and right of that HF
section, but only a few quality choices in that "center left"...

Betreff: [Elecraft] KX3 - CW weighting

Hi,

I'm experiencing a difference in handling the cw-weighting by my KX3 (serial
4766, MCU 01.87, DSP 01.28) I don't have a scope, but my hearing is ok ;-) I
adjusted the menu setting for cw weight to 1.15, because I like a little bit
more "rounded" tone.
I can only hear that back, when I use the XMIT-button to place the rig in
TX-mode. When I'm using the VOX the keying seems unaffected by the
weight-setting.
Please tell me if this is reproducable and if so, can it be changed?

Thanks for any input.
Kees, PA3DEB
