[Elecraft] k2 firmware update problems with ATU
I have a K2 SN 670, so I bought the upgrade firmware (2.04r and Main, i / o 1:09). All work well but the ATU is not working. The first test that fails is CALn, no data is displayed, only ATU is displayed. AGAIN IF I INSERT THE OLD MAIN FIRMWARE ATU WORK WELL AGAIN. Firmware of KAT2 is 1.03 Thanks for any help. Giuliano, Did you make the trace cut and add the wires to change the sidetone signal source? The changes are shown in the KIO2 manual page 10 and also in the KPA100 manual page 59. Check and double check those changes. Especially the position of the wire and capacitor at Control Board P4. The added wire and capacitor connects to pin 1 which is the pin closest to the upper corner of the control board. CW QRQ: Do a fair amount of contesting, almost all of it CW. I do not understand what motivates folk to send a contest CQ at 40+ WPM. This speed is well beyond my abillity and I suspect beyond the capabilities of most folks who do not have a decoder device so I move on to the next station. I've been assured by hard core contesters that this method is needed to keep the QSO rate up. Seems counter-intuitive to me. I have no trouble with those who use variable speed wherein their call and the changing bits of the contest exchange are sent at a slower speed. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question about use of ESSB for Data Modes
Ran a couple of tests this morning and found that using ESSB only extends the transmit BW up to 3500Hz, so concurr that the ease of changing modes with DATA A far outweighs the slight change in BW and lots of buttons to push making sure EQ and comp etc are properly set if you don't use DATA A. Don I think this just shows that Elecraft thought this through in setting up the basic ops. 73 Dave K5MWR Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question about use of ESSB for Data Modes Message-ID: 5361cd8f.3090...@embarqmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Dave, For several reasons I would advocate DATA A mode over SSB (or ESSB) for data modes. First, most data mode signals are contained within the 300 to 3000 Hz range when the VFO is set at the 'recommended' data mode band frequency. Secondly, it is easy to move the VFO knob to hear and decode signals that are operating at the extreme edges of that bandwidth. Thirdly, using DATA A mode automatically turns off compression and TX EQ. Those must be manually turned off when using SSB or ESSB. All in all, my opinion is that DATA A is just more convenient to use than either SSB or ESSB for data modes. While SSB will work just fine if the proper precautions are taken, DATA A mode makes it automatic. The VFO is easy to move to get to those stations operating on the extreme edges (or outside) the normal passband. 73, Don W3FPR Sent from my iPad __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] QRQ CW
Speaking of contesting and QRQ . . . one of the things I have wondered about is what is the correlation between contest score and CW speed? Has anyone ever noted speed and then compared to score? There are obviously a lot of pitfalls to this - antenna, location, and op being the main ones. But I suspect that the winners do not regularly run high speed. Too much noise, too many ops who can't copy high speed, etc. And if you want the weak, rare mults to pull you out you need to be sure they can copy your dits as dits and not confuse them with noise bursts. As for the chap who commented he routinely ran 40+ wpm, well, I guess he is one of those I regularly skip over when I'm working SP. 73 de dave ab9ca/4 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I wonder where Dave got this idea from. I'd like to suggest it is wishful thinking. The contest winners clearly are superior ops and will use whatever speed benefits them. Re: [Elecraft] Keyboards revisited
John, I'm in the computer business and have been for 30 years. I have never seen such a device. However, using something like Arduino Leonardo http://arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoBoardLeonardo one could easily create such a thing using a common 3x4 keypad and a fairly small amount of code. There are probably other ways to remap a keyboard. There are numeric-only keyboards, but I don't know of any simple way to remap the keys to something else. 73, Doug -- K0DXV On 4/30/2014 12:51 PM, John Lawrence via Elecraft wrote: Function keys continue to be a big big deal for contesting and I too am an OT stuck on the side cluster muscle memory. Re: [Elecraft] QRQ CW
Back when I worked at the old Microlog Corp in Gaithersburg MD in the late 70's, we found that a lot of rigs couldn't be keyed much faster than about 50 WPM. Key click filtering etc., made mush of the faster CW.A keyed string of dots looked like the output of a half wave rectifier ! To get around this limitation, in order to run 100 WPM CW, we'd revert to AFSK keying, copying the Mark frequency only.worked like a proverbial charm. It was like having our own private encryption system as nothing but a computer assisted copy system could decipher it.We never really asked if it was legal though. And, to my knowledge, there was and still is NOTHING out there as good as the decoding algorithms those programmers wrote. (The main one just happened to be the president of the company.) I tested every piece of competitive equipment I could get my hands on to prove this point. Microlog was the absolute king-of-the-hill for CW copy, hand sent, bug sent or otherwise. In order to fool it, you had to purposely send rotten code. 73, Charlie k3ICH - Original Message - From: Phil Hystad phys...@mac.com To: Alan Bloom n...@sonic.net Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, May 01, 2014 1:10 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] QRQ CW He said that during the entire QSO neither one of them ever got the other station's call correct. :=) Now, that made me laugh. -phil, K7PEH On May 1, 2014, at 10:07 AM, Alan Bloom n...@sonic.net wrote: On 05/01/2014 09:41 AM, Brian Alsop wrote: I wonder where Dave got this idea from. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Memory Management Program
This is in fact a deficiency in Debian. Most of the required libs can be installed in a multi-arch configuration where the 32-bit libraries go into a separate directory from the 64-bit libraries. However the gtkhtml package among others does not yet conform to this standard. The 32-bit libraries therefore cannot coexist on the same system as the 64-bit libraries. On Fedora this problem is not there and you can install compat-gtkhtml314.i686 and the Elecraft utilities will display their help. There are two possible solutions on Debian systems. The Debian project can fix their libraries or Elecraft can make available a version of their utilities compiled for 64 bits. It may take a long time for debian to correct their libraries so I would suggest Elecraft take the time to compile their utilities for 64 bits as an alternate download. 73, David W4DES On May 1, 2014, at 3:58 PM, Pierfrancesco Caci p...@tippete.net wrote: as a matter of fact, all linux software available on Elecraft website works perfectly well on Debian Wheezy at 64 bits EXCEPT the built-in help for said software, which requires a library which is not available. [Elecraft] K3: Linux and HRD not on speaking terms
Gotta luv the K-Line, but I just cannot make the change to Linux due to the lack of a K3 rig control program that will operate under Linux. I get the program to load, however I cannot get Wine to recognize the USB port serial converter. Linux says it is there - Wine knows nothing of it. Hence, HRD has no means to communicate with the K3. Has anyone found a way to run HRD (old version only used for rig control) under Wine on Linux? I have not gone to the dark side of virtual anything and would prefer not to. It may be that I will set up the K3 on its own dedicated Winners computer and the desk computer for everything else on Linux. Easier, but where's the challenge? Thanks for all the ideas First, I gather there is some confusion as to my application intent. My inquiry was to add a stand alone device to allow the function key ascii codes to come in via an additional keyboard on a computer. And, it was to work with the computer logging programs directly must like the standard computer keyboard but be more user friendly with the function key macros by placing it off to the side of the main board. Back in the early days of computer logging with CT on DOS there were keyboards with the function keys in a cluster off to the side thus avoiding the need to reach up beyond normal touch keyboard range to access function keys and in some cases also press Fn to reach F7 through F12. By having a programmable cluster with 12 keys set as ascii keys for F1 thru F12, it would be easier to work with them at high run rates. That's all. I haven't had time to investigate the alternatives offered to me but I will. When I come up with the best answer it will be presented on here. Again a 12 key cluster with USB to run with the logging program is the goal...I did not intend to interface directly with the K3. Re: [Elecraft] QRQ CW
I'm by no means a QRQ CW operator, mainly I use CW for weak signal or EME QSOs. I was barely able to successfully copy 20 WPM, to upgrade to Extra Class. I attribute this to not having good CW capabilities when first licensed 67 years ago, but after many, many, high concentration, very weak, CW EME QSOs have improved my abilities. Normal weak signal and EME speeds generally are about 13-15 WPM and during contest often extend to 18-20 WPM. These seems to be good compromises for between the maximum speed that EME signals can be decoded, and what most, not so experienced, CW operators are comfortable with. When HF signals reach 30 WPM I generally can only copy call signs after two or three repeats, This fact highly discourages me from participating in HF CW contests. My biggest pet peeve is for HF CW operators to immigrate up to 6M CW, and bring their egocentric, extra high speed, show off CW, and questionable QSO, abilities with them. Many good DX QSOs are often lost or missed in these 35-45 WPM exhibitions. Yes, there are V/UHF operators that are using 6M, and would like to make an effort to improve their lacking CW skills. Please give them a break ! Re: [Elecraft] Function Keyboard Revisited
John, If your intent is to have the keyboard function through some application, then the feasibility of your solution depends on the capability of the application, and that may have nothing to do with the K3 capability. The K3 has many capabilities available through applications that connect to it. Almost any function of the K3 front panel can be accomplished in one way or another through programming (see the K3 Programmer's Reference). To use ASCII codes from the keyboard directly would require significant changes to the K3 firmware to recognize those ASCII characters. I do not think that is going to happen. Refer to the K3 Programmers Reference to see what can be accomplished and the data stream that is required to produce the desired results. In other words, the functions are available to do most everything that can be done from the front panel, but it takes a bit of processing to send the correct commands to the K3. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/1/2014 8:33 PM, John Lawrence via Elecraft wrote: Thanks for all the ideas First, I gather there is some confusion as to my application intent. [Elecraft] KPA500 not responding to K3
Hello friends, I've been using my tiny KX3 with a KPA500 and KAT500 for many months now. The KX3 only puts out 12 watts, but the KPA500 translates it successfully into about 200W. The KPA500 and KAT500 have been connected via the official DB15 cable sold by Elecraft, and the KX3 triggers the amp via RCA cable into the amp's PA-key connector. Fast-forward to today: I just received a K3, and I'm really excited to see the K3, KPA500, and KAT500 all just work together magically. Except they're not. I've connected everything exactly as shown in the KAT500 manual: - K3's ACC port is connected to the tuner's XCVR port, via the official KPAK3AUX cable. - The tuner's AMP port is connected to the amp's AUX port, via the official E850463 cable. I'm definitely able to use the K3 and tuner together when the amp is off. But when I turn on the amp, there appears to be no communication between amp and K3. - The amp doesn't notice when I change bands on the K3. - The amp won't let me change bands at all, even when I push its band buttons! - When I put the amp into OPER and transmit 15 or 20W from the K3, the amp doesn't appear to key and amplify. It just shows the exact 20W as passing through (on it's 'power' display.) I've verified that the amp's RADIO option is set to 'K3'. Go download the latest beta versions of the firmware and the associated utility programs. Have you set the baud rate in the K3 to that of the amp? When the amp is moved from standby to Operate you should see a message in the K3 that says KPA500. You can set the K3 output with the amp and without. I would check the firmware. I know there is a special button you push on the KAT500 that optimizes operation with the KPA500. [Elecraft] KX3 Chasing local HF noise sources
Good Evening All, Questions and Advice sought, i will report back on results... (cross posted to qrp-l, elecraft, and kx3) I live in a rural area, which should be very low noise. i put up a OCFD (88:44) this afternoon, and tonite wandered on to 80m to listen and check the antenna. I had 20db over noise everywhere. 40m was showing S4 noise, and I could only copy about 4 or 5 stations above the noise on 40m (yep, NR and NB both on, 400hz wide). nearest neighbor is 1/4mi away, and I'm the last one on a rural overhead power line. So, Given a KX3 and internal batteries, my first thought is to build a small multi-turn electrostatically shielded loop (1ft dia, 3-5 turn in a copper pipe, 1 gap at top) and see if I can localize any local noise sources. my office and computers are prime targets of course... Is this overkill ? Recommendations for a better small / near-field noise pickup ? Any other advice for first steps ? Anyone else chased noise sources with their KX3 ? How did it work, what antenna did you use ? Other suggestions / recommendations ? Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 not responding to K3
I just got a KAT500 a couple of weeks ago and was talking with Eric. The Beta's which might have been released to live by now had many changes that would make the the three device all get along much better. I am pretty sure you need to set the baud rate on the KPA500 and the K3 to the same rate. Ie 38400. You will need to get the usb-serial cable to do the updates. The KAT 500 acts as a type of Y or WYE for the 15 pin cable. You should have got a the pc interface cable with the KAT500. Download the current utility and then download version 1.67 Under configuration you should see a big button that says Optimize for KPA-500. Push it! I was told to put 1500 in the maximum watts box. save it and see what happens. The KPA 500 should switch to the right band on rf. It is strange that it will not amplify. I know there is a special button you push on the KAT500 that optimizes operation with the KPA500. I see nothing about this in the KAT500 manual, but will look again. The connection between tuner and amp has always worked; I haven't touched that special DB15 cable at all. However, perhaps the new DB15 cable that arrived with the K3 is physically defective? I'm digging for hypotheses. :-) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Chasing local HF noise sources
Run the KX3 on battery and turn off your house mains and see if the noise goes away. If not you know to start looking elsewhere. You might also try the RFI reflector.
Folks, the K3 has two serial ports: a standard RS232 for talking to a computer, and an 'ACC' port for talking to the amp. Same situation with the KPA500: an RS232, and an AUX port. On both devices, the speed of the RS232 port is changeable. But those ports aren't being used at all! The ACC on the radio is connecting to the AUX on the amp. And those are not configurable ports. Just upgraded the KAT500 from firmware 1.41 to the latest 1.67, as recommended by W0MU. Saw the optimize for kpa500 button and did the deed. (All it seemed to do was automatically put 1500 in the max-watts box.) Regardless, it didn't seem to fix anything. Still no communication at all between radio and amp, with tuner as the middleman. I'll try N6ML's test next, which is a great idea -- just connect the K3 directly to the amp, leaving the tuner out... I don't have a usb-serial cable yet, though I can grab one tomorrow at the store; is there a specific bug fixed in some beta firmware release? Have you set the baud rate in the K3 to that of the amp? I see nothing in either manual about the K3 or amp having configurable baud rates to communicate with each other. Do you have details? When the amp is moved from standby to Operate you should see a message in the K3 that says KPA500. I see nothing at all.
