I blew it, and in a quick transaction sold one of my K2's forgetting that It had the DSP. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, The clouds are wringing out the last of the precipitation from the latest storm system in preparation for a week of sunshine. It will be a shock; the moss was doing so well too :) I'll enjoy having it around warming everything up. Speaking of sun it looks like a number of spots are moving into position to effect us. Lately I've been hearing more storm related noise than I have auroral or solar wind noise. Hopefully the rain will spread southward, we really don't need much more here in the Pacific Northwest. Soon the dry season will let us go out with our portable rigs. Field Day can be wet and cold or dry and hot, you never can tell until a few days before. Please join us tomorrow. 14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday) 7045 kHz at 0100z Monday (6 PM PDT Sunday) 73, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] broken receiver, I suspect
Jeff, Do you have the KXV3 (transverter interface) installed? If so, remove it, and put back the jumper that would have been removed when it was installed (I think there's just one jumper, but check the installation manual). There's a PIN diode on there that will blow if it sees more than about 2W. If you don't have the KXV3, there's another PIN diode on the main RF board that can be vulnerable. I'll forward you an email from support when this happened to me a while ago 73, ~iain / N6ML On Sat, May 10, 2014 at 3:04 PM, Jeff Stai wrote: > On Sat, May 10, 2014 at 2:53 PM, Lyle Johnson wrote: > >> Is the sensitivity problem only on 12 m? >> > > No, it appears to be on all bands, though I have not checked all bands. Re: [Elecraft] KX3: popping noise in radio speaker
I've not noticed any such sounds, Ed, but my hearing is not exactly reference standard. I'm using Eneloop NiMH and have the optional charger so they can stay in the KX3. So far, so good -- though I'm usually on 13.8 VDC or an external battery if available. I used eight AA batteries which all tested at 1.53v before installation - brand new out of the package. 8x1.53 = 12.24v but there is loading so voltage started at about 11.9v. I noted current was running about 250ma with radio in SSB and normal volume level. I guess the radio draws pretty hard in receive. I removed the batteries and radio runs normal with 13.5vdc applied. I guess using 2.2v lithium or NiHD batteries would work better. I do not intend to run with internal batteries but wondered if anyone else has encountered "popping audio" and is it voltage related? Or is this related to the speaker physical fit issue with early models of the KX3? [Elecraft] broken receiver, I suspect
I just sent the message below to support, but I suspect they are all partying in Dayton. If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them - thanks! - jeff wk6i -- Forwarded message -- hi - I recently lent my K3 #00027 as part of the W1AW/7 multi-op from Nevada. The environment was not well controlled and I'm pretty sure my receiver was damaged during a band change. On the last day of the operation I was calling CQ on 12m and getting no response. Turns out everyone was calling me but I was hearing almost nothing. On my bench I checked it using an XG2. The 50uV setting gave only S3. I then did a full parameter initialization and then tried to calibrate the RF gain using the K3 utility. The utility reported that there was not enough signal to perform the calibration. I also have an XG1 so I tried that. Same result. I tried turning the pre-amp on and off, which did cause about a 2 S unit difference as might be expected. The attenuator also caused an audible difference but not a useful S meter reading. One might suspect that I've blown out one or more of those PIN diodes before the preamp. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] HRD/DM80 and a SignaLink
Jack, Another possibility is that you have DM780 set to supply PTT via HRD and HRD is issuing a CAT command to the KX3 to go into transmit. If the Signalink PTT is also used, things can become confused. There are several other possibilities such as VOX being on and set to a value that is staying set on from whatever low level noise is on the mic cable from the SL. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/9/2014 10:26 PM, Jack Spitznagel wrote: Good Weekend All, Don't have easy access to search the archives, so at risk of a dup, here is a "finding" from setting up the KX3, SignaLink with the KX3 Tigertronics made cables, and DM780. HRD works flawlessly with Elecraft KXUSB here, but... Using the little paper instruction insert that came with the SL to KX3 cables from Tigertronics, it was implied that the KX3 menu entry for MicBtn was to be in PTT Up.Dn. Well, that is apparently backwards. The system behaves normally if Mic Btn is OFF, and when set as instructed in the little sheet, the outgoing data string is transmitted in your selected mode, then the SL unkeys (as it should), but the KX3 stays in transmit. When the KX3 is set as the TigerTronic folks suggest, I assume the SL vox relay was being "overruled" by the TX command by KXUSB control because tapping the XMIT button on the rig would drop the rig back into receive. With PTT set OFF, the SignaLink VOX circuit has proper control. Had me stumped for a minute.. hope this helps someone setting up in the future. Re: [Elecraft] Making a Signalink cable for the K3's 8-pin mic
Slava, Yes, that would most likely work - BUT - I would suggest that you move the input from your audio gear from Line In to Mic In and use the Line In for the Signalink. Surely you have an output level adjustment for your audio gear that will allow mic level output - if not, add an attenuator. That would allow you to select Line In as the MIC SEL fo data modes. and either FP or RP mic for SSB which is the more normal setup for audio. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/10/2014 3:15 PM, Slava Baytalskiy wrote: I just had a thought: what about the rear mic jack (the 3.5mm) and the line out? Re: [Elecraft] A K2 Question
It works fine for portable operation. I usually take my K1 camping a couple times a month during the warmer seasons, but occasionally take the K2/10. The front panel of the K2 is very close to the same size as the KX3. In fact, if you remove the K2 front panel assembly, THAT is almost exactly the same size as a KX3 (though it is useless that way). Re: [Elecraft] Px3 or KPA100?
Thanks for the replies. I wasn't aware that the internal KX3 tuner couldn't be used so thanks for clearing that up. I use my kx3 99% of the time from my office. Not much for hauling it out to the seashore or mountain tops. Additionally, the extra $300.00 puts a cramp in my plan. Another couple of hundred I could swing, but opening up that $1000.00 door puts it above my pay grade for now. I'm sure that I'll get some sort of amplification for the KX3 when I just can't got out over the noise, but for flying a desk, I guess teh PX3 will be the sensible alternative for now. And yes, my KX3 "Hears" FAR better than my IC7000. On the whole, I really found that to be a disappointing radio. It has a lot of bells and whistles, but other than the 100Watts, the KX3 blows it out of the water (for me anyway). -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Px3-or-KPA100-tp7588858p7588876.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Making a Signalink cable for the K3's 8-pin mic
With all due respect, you already received the answer here. Yes, you can connect the Signal Link to the front panel mic connector. Just pad the audio output of the SL to a mic level, instead of line level. Also, you won't be able to get audio output from the K3 back to the SignalLink via that jack. The RX audio of the K3 is not available there (see the manual). So you would need another cable from line out on the back for that anyway. So... it would be easist to just patch it in via the back (via your rack of signal shaping/mixing gear), as has been suggested.
