Re: [Elecraft] K3 KX3 running winmor
I'm running RMSExpress 1.2.27.0 / WINMOR 1.5.7.0 and I'm seeing the same problem. It clicks the K3 over to USB mode instead of DATA mode. USB Digital is selected in WINMOR setup too. The bug was reported back in Jan (I believe) and from what I can see it hasn't been fixed. Frank KG6EYC On Fri, May 16, 2014 at 4:55 PM, Joel Black wrote: > Hmm... Yes, I have also had similar problems with the KXPA100 (SN#0876)and have already composed and sent a letter to support. Re: [Elecraft] KX3-2M and -4M now available to order
Hi Mike, Answers below: We will be updating the FAQ shortly with the latest specs. I believe this is total RX current, but only during active receive. The RX current is much lower than this as we have now implemented the battery save mode like most HTs, where the rx can be user set to be sampled at regular intervals when squelched, with it in low current standby otherwise. Yes, you can turn off the 2M option from the menu if desired. The Squelched current is the total current draw. The factory installed price is the same for new KX3s getting the 2M option and for those returned to the factory for installation of the option. While not overly difficult, the 2M option does take more time than the simple plugging in of a board like the KXAT3. Factory installation also involves specific routing and installation of several thin coax cables and PCB insertion of micro coax RF connectors, along with a full factory test of the installed 2M option and the rest of the KX3 after installation to make sure Hf operation was not disturbed. We try to test to a level above that normally required for field installations of the option. Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 f/w 1.28 now production released
How are people finding this new firmware? I've been having problems recently with my KXPA100, where it intermittently shows high SWR for a brief moment, and then either recovers or puts itself in bypass. At first I thought I had an issue with my antenna, but I discovered it was happening with a dummy load too. It mostly happens on SSB, but it happens to a lesser extent CW. It also happens with both my KX3 with integrated cable, and with my K2 using the keying line. I pulled the amp apart, looking for poor connections and dry joints, but no success there. By gently blowing across the mike, I was able to get it into the failure mode, and stay there. The SWR bridge in the amp was reading high. I had a crossneedle SWR meter between the radio and the amp, but as I blew progressively harder into the mike, the SWR on the meter was low. Then, once the power applied reached a certain level, the amp would come good again. This made me suspect whether the band auto-sensing may have been switching in a wrong LPF? Then last night, I reflashed the amp with release firmware 1.28, but still had the problem. Then I downgraded the firmware on the amp from 1.28 to 1.09, which was the release my amp was shipped with. I haven't observed or been able to reproduce the problem since. This is now leading me to suspect a possible bug in the 1.28 firmware? I'm wondering if anyone else may have observed any strange glitches with the 1.28 firmware? 73, Matt VK2RQ On 3 May 2014, at 2:14 am, Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft wrote: > KXPA100 Production Firmware MCU 1.28 has been released to production status > and is now shipping. > > Important: This version of firmware has new features that require the very > latest KXPA100 Utility. > > We recommend all KXPA100 owners upgrade to the latest KXPA100 utility and to > KXPA100 MCU 1.28. > > > Some of the Key Changes in this release: > > - Better tolerates forward and reflected power overshoot for brief periods to > support external antenna tuners. Re: [Elecraft] OT: US Signal Corps rhombic book
The last year of my enlistment was spent as one of three operators selected to reopen K2USA in 1964. General "Duffy" Brown, a ham, was embarrassed to discover that the station was boarded up and couldn't participate in traffic concerning the AK earthquake. I left my slot as a crypto instructor at the Signal School for this opportunity. Gen. Brown assigned the task to a Major whose name escapes me (Norm something). He was our CO. SFC Wm (Scotty) Scot was in charge, SP5 Jim Dishaw and I were operators. But since we were all hams, Scotty "found" some non-ham radio operators on post who handled all of our MARS obligations (using Studio 2 in the photos), leaving the three of us to play ham radio with studios full of KWM-2As , S-Lines, some Hallicrafters, etc. Most of our time was spent troubleshooting and repairing the equipment to get it operational. The KWM-2As we liberated from various sources on Fort Monmouth. I sat in a sling on the end of a crane atop every freakin' one of those 90' telephone poles getting the Telex monoband beams operational. I didn't like that part much. The rhombic was sometimes used for phone patches to SE Asia, but the beams usually worked better. I can't remember what the rhombic was terminated on at the time. I believe it was changed later. I used to break into QSOs between a couple VKs talking ground wave who were discussing how the band had closed. It was sometimes a magic antenna, but not always. BTW, the license trustee, Mike Reason (W2EXU) was a local civilian who hung out at the MARS station and helped out a lot. He's a really nice guy who later made his career in civil service there at Fort Monmouth. My wife and I visited with him on a motorcycle trip in 1985. I having talked to him in a long while, but maybe you met him when you were there. Re: [Elecraft] 270 foot (ish) Doublet & K3 ATU
Sure it does, you're changing the line losses, tweaking C and L and therefore the SWR (always measured at the tuner, but moving peaks and valleys closer/further away from that point) any time you alter the system. There are specific resonant points in an antenna system (typically each half wavelength). The goal is to make one of them at the radio. In a multiband antenna, this is um, challenging if not impossible. The common mode choke stops any into the shack, but what is varying is the coax from rig to choke. Those losses change and resonant portions of the feed system change so I'd expect to see the tuning change. The odd part is no major difference from 70' of window line to 100'. My presumption is that the antenna is simply too close to dirt, so changes are more subtle or masked. The coax portion (if used) should be as short as feasible to keep line losses low. If you can't, you'll have to accept the losses; sometimes I use 35' instead of 10' so I can be more effective (get a better tune) on the bottom of 80M and run the amp. Signal loss is not as significant there and receiver gain is far more than ample. I won't do that on 10M where the loss is major (2-3 S units). It's a system, not just a bunch of pieces. They all add up. FWIW, 170' per leg of the dipole is 5/8 wave mid 75 meters; not a resonant antenna. It requires a tuner. If the OP has time and the space, an intriguing option is the 160 full wave loop. It resonates in every ham band or close enough. Only the 160 M loop does this, an 80 M loop does not. I don't have the real estate, or tall trees. So for field day, a meadow with enough tall trees on the edge... Hmmm... 73, Rick wa6nhc Tiny iPhone 5 keypad, typos are inevitable > On May 15, 2014, at 1:33 PM, "Wes (N7WS)" wrote: > > This makes no logical sense, unless you have a big common-mode problem. > > Wes N7WS > > > >> On 5/15/2014 12:54 PM, Rick Bates, WA6NHC wrote: >> Changing the length of the coax portion has a HUGE impact on where (or if) >> the system tunes; the window line, none. > > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > Message delivered to happymooseph...@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I've found a solution with python... Mike, see below: Eric wrote: The KX3 2M FAQ, which will also apply to the -4M, can be reached at: http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KX3-2M%20FAQ.htm The FAQ question that follows raises a number of additional questions: Q: What is the current drain on 2 meters? A: Current drain is typically 300-350 mA on receive and 1.5 A on transmit at 3 watts, running from a 14 V supply. Is that the *TOTAL* current drawn by the KX3 with KX3-2M installed, or is this *ADDITIONAL* current draw to that of the KX3 without KX3-2M? It is the total KX3 current drain. Is there a front panel function that may be used to turn off the KX3-2M and restore the pre-installation KX3 current consumption when 2m isn't desired? Just set a band other than 2 meters, and the 2 meter module will power down. We're also working on a standby mode (when squelched) that should reduce average current drain to between 180 and 200 mA, depending on the dwell time selected by the user. I have the same question...is this squelched current draw in addition to the normal KX3 current draw? It is the total current drain, not additional current drain. And the standby mode is already implemented -- the FAQ was written before the firmware :-) The KX3-2M and -4m specific order page is at the following address. http://www.elecraft.com/tmp/kx3_2m_4m.html The $60 premium charged for factory installation implies that there's some notable time and effort required. Is this an accurate anticipation? Will the factory-installation premium be the same for new KX3 units ordered with the KX3-2m option? FT units have typically taken 30 to 60 minutes to install depending on the individual doing it. Open the case, remove the ATU (if present), install the SMA cable, snap in the LO cable, re-install the ATU (or the interface board if no ATU was present), install the 2 M module (2 screws), snap on the shield cover, inspect your work, then close the case. Enable the module through the menu and you're ready to go. [Elecraft] 270 foot (ish) Doublet & K3 ATU
Iain, It may be worth going back to basics and reading up on doublet antennas as well as open wire feeders. The critical length is half of the top plus the feeder length and this should be adjusted so that it isn't resonant on any band you wish to use. This because it is easier to match a medium impedance but reactive load rather that a high or low impedance load. The impedance of the feeder is immaterial in this case as are issues of balance so erect whatever you can and enjoy using it. Based on your dimensions of 270ft top and 33ft feeder the critical length will be 168ft which may give trouble on some bands so may I suggest using about 148 to 150ft. Hope your system works out OK 73 Peter G3SMT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
