Re: [Elecraft] I got big heavy knobs
I have had a set for over a year with no problems. I would have never bought a set but once I felt the difference on one actually mounted on a K3 at Dayton I had to have one. I bought a second set this year. I’ll never go back to the originals. They just have a dead feel. Something hard to explain as it is like driving a car. Some you love, some not so much.. Only thing I would like to see is a rubber tire on it like the Yaesu tuning know. I talked with 73CNC about it and they are open to the idea but the set up cost versus the number he might set is a gamble as to whether they would recoup their expense. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Meaning of KAT500 flashing Auto light
I am having some problems with my understanding of the KAT500. I have a K3 and an ACOM1000 linear. On 40m when I operate data modes or AM (purely for testing purposes) all is well the units work well together. I can happily run up to 400 watts and as is well. My 40m OCFD has an SWR of about 1.2:1. But when I operate SSB things go odd. For no apparent reason the KAT500 starts to retune part way through and over and enters a fault condition (on the same frequency as I was using for data - so there is no frequency change involved) and the Auto button flashes. Now I have looked in the manual and cant find the meaning of the flashing Auto LED. Can someone advise me please. I know its me but I am puzzled. [Elecraft] FS: K2/100 Price Reduced
I have for sale my K2/100, serial number 49XX, with the KPA 100 amp built into the unit, KSB2 SSB unit, K160RX with separate antenna port, KDSP2, KI02 RS232 connector and board, Heil MH2 mic, DC cable with power poles on rig end, FDIMP, all manuals, laminated info card, and a K2 Nifty mini-manual. Rig is in excellent condition, no bangs, dents marks or other damage. Has full 100W output. This is a repost of a previous sale that was not successfully completed. The buyer could not get the rig to transmit without it showing a code of Hi Refl that would not go away. He was using a manual tuner and I could not duplicate the problem with my LDG Pro II ATU. It will show that code while the ATU is tuning and power is reduced, but it goes away once a SWR match is reached and PO is up to 100 watts or whatever it is set at. I have had many US and DX QSOs with no problem at full power within the last month to test the rig. Since he was not satisfied, I refunded the purchase price. As I don't know if this is a real issue or not, I have lowered the price of the rig to account for any possible tweaking that is necessary. In light of this, I am selling the rig as is. Other than this possible issue, the RX is great and, as far as I can tell, TX is working as it should for me with the ATU. Pictures available upon request. If you have further questions, please send me your phone number and I will call you. Current Elecraft price for this rig in kit form with the options listed above is about $1,800 shipped. My price is $990 plus shipping. Re: [Elecraft] Meaning of KAT500 flashing Auto light
Andy, There have been improvements in the firmware to address exactly that re-tuning problem. It has to do with the measurement of SWR - during SSB, if the reflected power is sampled at a voice peak and the forward power is sampled during a period of low RF, the resulting calculation will think the SWR is high and re-tune. There have been changes made to the firmware to attempt to smooth that measurement over a longer period of time. If you are not using the latest firmware, give it a try. After 'training' the tuner, you may want to run it in Manual mode rather than letting it auto-tune 'on the fly'. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/20/2014 8:44 AM, ANDY NEHAN wrote: I am having some problems with my understanding of the KAT500. [Elecraft] Clarification on KX3-2M/4M current drain
When the KX3 is NOT switched to 2 meters (or 4 meters), the KX3-2M/4M module is turned completely off, adding no current drain of its own. When 2 m (or 4 m) is selected, the module adds a little over 100 mA, nominally. However, in FM mode, SLEEP settings can be used to drop the effective receive current drain of the module to as little as 20 mA. The module wakes up when a signal opens the squelch. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Sometimes when the weather changes, the match changes. There was a thread like this awhile back and it was noted that the different residual capacitances and inductances when using the KAT500 versus the ATU in the K3 makes a difference in being able to find a match with certain loads. It was also pointed out by Elecraft that the tuner values in the K3 ATU and the KAT500 are the same. Re: [Elecraft] P3 adding rf protection diodes question
The diodes are not needed in the normal situation where the P3 is connected to the K3 IF output. You can use the P3 as a kind of poor ham's spectrum analyzer by going into the menu and setting Xcvr Sel to the last item in the list, labeled 0 Hz. Now the frequency displayed is the actual RF frequency of the IF input, not the K3 frequency. The XCVR RS-232 connector should be disconnected from the K3 in this case. Tune the frequency with the CENTER control. (Make sure the CenterEn menu item is ON.) If you do that you should add the back-to-back diodes in parallel with the input BNC connector. Standard 1N4148 or similar switching diodes are fine. If you don't want to modify the P3 you can do what I did: Add the back-to-back diodes to a male BNC connector and connect that to a BNC T plugged into the P3 IF IN. There may be some slight degradation of dynamic range. The third-order intercept of the P3's preamplifier is about +9 dBm (0.6 Vrms). If you're worried about it you can use two diodes in series in each leg (4 diodes total) to reduce the distortion contribution from the diodes. Alan N1AL On 05/19/2014 06:38 AM, Sam Morgan wrote: It was mentioned to put a couple of diodes across the P3's input to protect it. [Elecraft] Reading 'extended' data from menus via serial
Howdy, So some of the menu options have a basic setting, ie on/off, but then an extended setting as well. For example the Alarm menu: MN000; When read with MP; it will only report if the alarm is on or not (Bit 4 on / off) you can turn it on or off by changing that bit with MP, and you can change the hours/minutes setting (after sending the right SWT command) using UP; or DN;, but is there any way to read what time the alarm is set to? The programming reference says (In some cases, more than one value can be accessed for a given menu entry via the numeric keys; see menu listing in manual.) All the manual says for the alarm menu is: Num 1 turns the alarm on/off Num 2 select hours Num 3 selects minutes None of these change what is reported by MP though and I can't seem to find anything else in the manual. Anyone know if it's possible to read that value? TX ESSB is another one. I would like to see 4M released for ham use, not necessarily for repeaters, but rather for weak signal use. There are many times when the MUF goes above 50 MHz, but doesn’t reach 2M. 70 MHz would be very useful for sporadic E. Meteor scatter would still be good there, not as good as 50 MHz, but much better than 144 MHz. EME, with WSJT, should be significantly easier than 50 MHz. With a limited number of 144MHz and up ops here, 70 MHz would really help the VHF/UHF contest scores in this area. The whole state of NM has a 50W limitation on 432MHz, so we are limited as to contacts on that band. Amateur use of 70 MHz should be able to coexist on a sharing basis with current users, with perhaps some limitations near critical users, if there are any. Doug, Are you attempting to send PSK31 from the K3 Utility Terminal window? Or from another application? If from the K3 Utility, there is no need for DTR or RTS because K3 Utility sends the TX command via the RS-232 com port as a command. If you are using some other computer application, you will have to set things up in that application to properly key the K3 - the number of applications and the way they initiate transmit is too wide and varied for an easy email answer, consult the help file and on-line information for your application. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/20/2014 9:19 PM, Doug Person via Elecraft wrote: I have a full K-line setup (K3, P3, KPA500, KAT500) and I've been trying to get the K3 working on digital modes. With the K3 Utility, it seems that clicking on the transmit button on the utility screen without any message in the message box does not switch K3 to transmit mode. K3 Utility is not a good tool to extensively operate digital mode. I would recommend some other tools such as MMTTY for RTTY and MMVali for PSK, although they need an additional interface device or cable to interconnect your K3 and PC. Of course, you cannot use either of them in parallel to K3 Utility. I prefer touch-typing operation on RTTY and PSK. So, I do not use K3 Utility for these modes.
