[Elecraft] KXPA100 Hi PA current ?
I have had my KXPA100 for 5 months or so now. I have loaded the latest firmware Wayne sent out a few weeks ago for beta testing. My KXPA100 has the Automatic antenna tuner installed. I run the amp into a Carolina Windom 40 and the automatic antenna tuner works well using this antenna on all the bands except 160 meters of course. I normally don't operate on that band anyway. I was running the amp on 40 meters at 100 watts doing back to back rag chewing CW QSO's this evening. The amp shutdown and my KX3 display showed Hi PA current. The amp was very hot to the touch which makes me believe the amp had to shut down to protect the finals. The antenna SWR shows under 1.2. to 1. Is this normal behavior for the KXPA100? Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Splitting main/sub audio to 2 headphones
Stew, You should have no problems with paralleling 2 headphones on the audio output of the K3, with no need for any external mixer. If there is a significant difference in the response (SPL) of the two headphones, that may present a volume problem, in which case, some secondary amplification may be required for one or the other set of headphones. Since the gaming headset has a volume control, that alone may be sufficient - try it and see what the result may be. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/31/2014 5:20 AM, Stewart Rolfe wrote: I want to have a second op listening to the sub rx on a separate pair of phones (for 6m trophy, so same band). I've strung together 2 stereo sockets with one fed from the right and the other from the left side of the front panel phone output and this seems to works well. With the channels linked I get Main in both ears in one headphone set and Sub in both ears in the other, and when the sub rx is off there is Main in both. I'll be using a Yamaha CM-500 and a gaming headset so I'm wondering if I should be loading the audio with 2 headphones without any buffering etc. A cheap mixer with separate amps would be good and may give better volume control although the gamers have an inline volume control on the lead. A quick search however hasn't found a mixer that separates the input channels. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, The amount of sun this week can be counted in hours not minutes :) There may have been three full days of sun! Maybe the dry season is not too far off. With the sun came gradual warming but wearing a jacket is still advised. Not much logging activity which is very odd. They normally work their longest days during the wettest parts of the year. When it gets dry they are on constant fire watch so that doesn't allow them to cut very long. My second species of hummingbird showed up this week and it is hard to get out the front door without being accosted. So far I have kept the feeder filled for them. Who knows what will happen if I fail that chore. Propagation has been pretty good this week. That is good because the storm induced QRN is getting stronger. The sun has been spotted but not all that active. The ionosphere is getting fed while we're not getting radio blackouts. Good enough for me. Please join us tomorrow. 14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday) 7045 kHz at 0100z Monday (6 PM PDT Sunday) 73, Kevin. KD5ONS - P.S. Anna's and Rufous hummingbirds are the two species up here. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Receiver Protection
Jeff, That is a logic question seeking an answer. I don't know of a simple solution, but it is a matter of selecting a match of the outputs of 2 band data decoders. If any two are the same, assert TX INH to both K3s. That function could be implemented with a number of NAND gates or XOR gates at the outputs of the 2 band decoders. The exact implementation of the logic gates is "left to the student", there are several possibilities, but it would take a number of external logic gates to implement. If you are really into logical devices, you could program a chip to do that directly from the band data outputs - if all 4 of the outputs from both K3s are a match, assert TX INH to both transceivers. I do not know of an existing device that will provide that function, so the implementation would have to be created 'from scratch'. Yes, it is possible, it is just a matter of "a few logic gates". 73, Don W3FPR On 6/1/2014 12:04 AM, Jeff via Elecraft wrote: My station consists of two K-3's, each with a dedicated legal limit amplifier and SteppIr antenna. I had to learn to copy at least three times. First, I memorized the code from the Boy Scout Handbook with dots and dashes. That was good for about 5 wpm. Then I learned to copy with block printing and that worked well to almost 20, but I could not get there. I had to learn to copy with cursive to get the extra back when you had to get a minute perfect copy for the examiner. I am still working on head copy but for some reason I have to hold a pencil and make marks that even I can't read most of the words to copy. Finding a mill that works well is a challenge these days. The ships that I have worked on have several mills sitting around frozen up, but none that work well. I don't think there are any typewriter repairmen left around to rework a mill. Re: [Elecraft] Antenna choices
The problem with tuning a rotary beam to some other frequency with an antenna matching device is that the directional antenna becomes a rotatable dipole with the parasitic elements still acting at their physical length. Can you make contacts? You bet, I made a bunch of contacts on the WARC bands with a Cushcraft A4 with a rotary dipole kit on 40. A rotating dipole has directivity, just no front to back ratio and does not have the multi-element directivity typical of a three element beam. No the SteppIR is a three element beam on 20, 17, 15, 12 and 10 and will have a nice front to back ratio. On 30 and 40 if you have the trombone element it will have a front to side ratio of about 2 or 3 S units if it is 60 feet high. You will notice the gain on 17, and 12 that gives you a bit more punch than the competition. The down side is that you have more stuff to buy and more stuff to break. Nothing if free! But, I like my 3 element SteppIR with the 30/40 dipole kit. I now have 322 current countries and 1800 band countries. I don't think I could have done that with my A-4 and 40 meter dipole, but I would have a couple grand to spend. Re: [Elecraft] O.T. Learning Morse Code
During my Novice years back in the mid-1960s, I was operating regularly from my home QTH during summer vacation. My neighbor who was a former Navy radioman wanted to try out some operating. I had a J-38 straight key for sending and at that time I was head copy (mostly) at up to 20 wpm. So, we found a station sending about 10 to 15 and my neighbor couldn't copy. He asked for a typewriter. I went into the closet and got the old manual typewriter and set it on the desk. He was in fat city and copying everything sent. He could NOT copy without that typewriter. Re: [Elecraft] O.T. Learning Morse Code
A bit of "Believe It Or Not". As a very young 17 year old, and couple of years after I was first licensed, I was approached by a LT in the local Naval Reserve and asked if I wouldn't like to join his unit. After a hesitation on my part, he explained that he needed someone to each his Radiomen the Morse code and theory. After more hesitation, he proposed that he could enlist me at an above the entry level rate, and as a 3rd Class Petty Officer. I really was not familiar with Navy enlisted ranking, but it sounded better than as a Seaman. So I accepted. I was tasked teaching much older(>17) and lower ranked Radiomen, Morse code, via using a typewriter for copying. It was a learning experience for me, as I found this method much easier to learn, than by writing down the words and messages by hand. [Elecraft] K3: Repair Broken Power Pole
The two screws in the "middle" of the right side panel hold the low voltage regulators to the side, for heat sinking, IIRC. Take the top off and you will see this. There are nuts inside to remove. [Elecraft] Outboard speaker for KX3
I built an outboard amplifier/speaker especially for the KX3. It consists of a pair of 2 watt 4 ohm 50mm speakers in a small plastic utility box. The amplifier is a tiny (1.25" x 1.25") stereo class D board (with volume on/off control) I bought off ebay for about US$4. Including connectors, the whole project was less than US$10. The result is a very satisfactory, compact speaker/amplifier with room-filling audio output. I've included an internal, rechargeable LiPo battery for portable ops. (Although, I'm more likely to use earbuds out-of-doors). The only negative, if you consider it one, is the low-end response cuts off somewhere around 300 hz - so not much bass. But, for normal voice communications, it works splendidly. The total size is roughly 2.5" x 4.5" x 1.25". The box is quit rigid and does not buzz or vibrate. The power supply is a decent, regulated 5V 2 amp wall wart. There are not any notable artefacts that could find tuning around the band. 73, Doug -- K0DXV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] KX1/K3/KX3 and Bluetooth Headphones
Dave, Thanks, looking forward to your experience with the TaoTronics transmitter. I already have great ear buds (Plantronics GO2) that I like very much for stereo with iPhone and iPad, so no need for a headset. My ops are like 98.994949+ (10 times the square root of 98) percent CW only so have zero need for voice or mic BT receiver. The only reason I want to use BT for the KX3/K3 is so that I can easily get up and move around briefly without having to take off the headset and then put it back on again. Also, I don't want to get tangled up in a long cord which is my current predicament and my motivation for BT. I could have made my question more clear though -- I am looking for a base BT audio bluetooth transmitter only -- not headphones. Although, I do have my eye on a new pair of Beats BT headphones but they cost almost as much as the K3 sub-receiver and I am mixed on what is more important. 73, phil, K7PEH On May 31, 2014, at 11:05 AM, Dave G. wrote: >> From: Phil Hystad >> Has anyone found or used an adaptor of sorts to join >> Bluetooth headphones with audio from a K3/KX3 (or, whatever). > > Phil. > > I just ordered these via Amazon .. > A BlueAnt RB-BKBL-US Ribbon Stereo Bluetooth Streamer- Bluetooth Headset > and a TaoTronics® TT-BA01 Wireless Portable Bluetooth Stereo Music > Transmitter (Not A Bluetooth Receiver) for my KX1 and KX3. > > When they get here I'll check them out and let you know.. > TaoTronics also makes a 'twin' Bluetooth receiver for a mike... but > I'm not trying that approach just yet :) > > Dave KK7SS > Richland, WA > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > Message delivered to phys...@mac.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3/KX3 and Bluetooth Headphones
Bob, Thanks for the quick reply. I actually already have a pair of Bluetooth earbuds (Plantronics GO2) that I use with iPhone and iPad (listening and watching Physics lectures). So, the transmitter is the key thing I am looking for and was hoping that there would be recommendations for the best available. I am not an audio expert but I am thinking if there is a great Bluetooth transmitter designed for top-notch stereo equipment that it should suffice as great for the K3/KX3. One mystery that I did not know much about though was audio output of these devices and the driving voltage needed for the Bluetooth transmitters on the market. In particular headphone output on the KX3. 73, phil, K7PEH On May 31, 2014, at 9:01 AM, Bob W7AVK wrote: > Phil - Have a set of Costco hearing aids which includes a Bluetooth > transmitter. Interesting coincidence is that i just finished hooking up my K3 to the Signalink USB and HRD. Like 11 minutes ago. The cable i use has 3 plugs: line in, line out and PTT. I didn't connect the PTT at all because i'm using that jack on the K3 for my foot switch. So HRD keys the radio via CAT. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - use of a Clear Speech unit
I really like mine for mobile operations. Removes hiss and other disturbances in the audio. I never tried it with the K3 as it is a mono speaker. I rarely use Cans anymore to listen to the K3 as I added external speakers and I find that easier to listen that way. When I used Cans lightning was happening I tired quickly. If you do go that route I would first get good external speakers the if still needed get the external DSP units as the speakers in the units are good for mobile I am not sure I would be satisfied with them in the shack. I also have a GAP or BHI unit and the West Mountain has a better sound and speaker. The GAP sounds distorted at higher volumes when there is louder road noise. [Elecraft] K3 - Splitting main/sub audio to 2 headphones
I want to have a second op listening to the sub rx on a separate pair of phones (for 6m trophy, so same band).
