Re: [Elecraft] filters

2018-01-02 Thread Petr, OK1RP/M0SIS
Hi all,

the interesting think is to check the first -30dB attenuation skirt first.
(After about -30dB down from the peak of the crystal filter response curve
the DSP handles the remaining signal rejection for very strong signals that
are inside the filter response curve, effectively sharpening the remaining
filter response and limiting the b/w to that point)

Just the 2c...

Happy and healthy New Year 2018 to all over there!

2018-01-02 Thread Joe Lynch
Dear John,
I found that the Powerwerx that Elecraft resells (see: Elecraft® Hands-On Ham
Radio™) resells meets your requirements. It is also available from Powerwerx
(see: Power Supplies | Powerwerx). I switched to it from my Astron power
supply. I have detected no RF hash on my Elecraft products or on my IC 7300.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3s Power Supply SS30DV

2018-01-02 Thread Marc Veeneman via Elecraft
The strongest hash moves up and down 8the 80 meter band.. But my main
objection is that it shuts down the KX3 at turn-on. I use it with the
PowerWerx PG40S and a 12 volt battery. Whenever I forget to turn on the SS30
first, I have to repower the KX3 and then use the menu to switch the power amp
back on.

The KX3 display briefly displays an overvoltage message.

[Elecraft] PROGRESSIVE TUNING RATE

2018-01-02 Thread Michael Murphy
I was watching a video last night that Bob Nagy, AB5N did on the Icom 7610.
In the video Bob showed a feature called "Progressive Tuning Rate" that
varies the tuning rate based on the speed of the tuning knob. Please see
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elW42Nkiu0U at about 5 minutes into the
video for more info.

I'm wondering if there could be a firmware enhancement that would allow a
K3(s) (or a KX3 for that matter) to do this?

Thanks

My SS30DV has worked flawlessly for about 6 years on a variety of rigs and other
uses.
Contrary to the lack of such info, the actual voltage IS ADJUSTABLE with a small
potentiometer inside the unit.
However, there is a flaw in the unit. I use it at a condo on a beach of the
Atlantic Ocean in Cocoa Beach, Florida in the winters. The area around the rear
entrance for the air intake for the fan is totally rusted and the paint around
the vent is completely gone. There is, obviously, salt in the air, even though I
used it only inside, on the floor near the sliding glass door to the balcony.
While it is still working OK, I suspect that there is also corrosion inside the
unit, but hope that it doesn't cause a failure. A better antirust coating and/or
better paint job should be used. My K3 shows no corrosion nor rusting of any
parts, including inside. I did opt for the Stainless Steel Case screws in
construction.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3s Power Supply SS30DV

2018-01-02 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
I have the Astron SS30M which I find to be electrically quiet, excellent
regulation.  The fan does cycle on and off from time to time and that is
noticeable.    I power 3 radios, not at the same time, from this
supply.   Originally it has the Pos and Neg connections where you insert
the wire and tighten the screw on the side.   I too 2 brass, 10-32
screws, 1 1/2" long, cut off the heads, filed a small flat spot on the
side at one end, inserted one of these in the connectors and tighten the
screws.  Now I have two studs to which I can place several ring
terminals and secure with a wing nut. From these I have the power
for 3 radios, SWR/Pwr meter, antenna tuner all attached.   I did add a
dedicated ground terminal to the rear of the supply.   This is the
common point for all of the station equipment ground bonding.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 + K144XV question

2018-01-02 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jim,

The K144XV is natively a single antenna port transceiver.
But if you need separate TX and RX antenna connections for your
transverter, note that there is a jumper setting that can apply +5V on
the output coax during transmit - see page 21 of the K144XV instructions.
You should be able to use that voltage along with a small relay to
change the K144XV antenna between your transverter's 144MHz TX and RX
antenna connections.

Happy New Year to all!

I have a K3 with the internal K144XV 2m module. This works FB but both TX
and RX are on the same antenna port. In a configuration I am thinking of
using, there would be separate RX and TX lines.

With my main 2m EME station which uses a second K3 and a 10m to 2m
transverter, I have it configured with 28 MHz TX out on ANT2 to the
transverter input port and 28 MHz RX in on the RX ANT IN port with the front
panel . This works FB. I have the XVTR PWR menu setting such that it
outputs 3 watts which is directed to ANT2 rather than the XVTR OUT port.
Even though I am using a transverter, I am not using the back panel XVTR IN
and OUT ports.

When I attach the output of a 144 MHz to 28 MHz downconverter RX line to the
RX ANT IN port and enable RX ANT function on the front panel, the K3 with
internal K144 XV 2m module does not give me the desired results.

I hope I have made this clear. It seems that this should work with the
internal module since it works as I want with an external transverter.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3s Power Supply SS30DV

2018-01-02 Thread David Olean
I had a similar bad weather situation with my VHF operating in VHF
contests. The 144 MHz position was next to the door that went outside,
and the shack was alone on a rocky hilltop. It was 26 miles from the
ocean, so very little salt air, but the door was usually open and fog
and humidity was a recurring event. I always noticed that the 144 laptop
would crap out quite often. Any other computer up there would work OK,
but that unit near the open door would always fail. (usually a bad
keyboard or bad hard drive.) I also had rusty screws on the K3 which was
also close to that open door.

Re: [Elecraft] Progressive Tuning Rate

2018-01-02 Thread ab2tc
Hi,

Icom has had that for a long time even for their low end rigs such as the
IC-718. This has been suggested here a while ago for Elecraft to consider.
As far as I know the idea was rejected. I liked it on my Icom rigs, but some
people truly hate it. Nowadays many people, including myself, use
panadapters that allow point and click QSY. That can bring you straight
across a band with a couple of mouse clicks.

Ideas or suggestions?

I believe the internal xvrtr routes the rcv antenna connection
through a header on the board and in normal operation, that is
jumpered. I would think you can remove the jumper and use the header
to make your receive connection

My FT-847 from 20+ years ago had it, Yaesu called it the "Jog Ring" or
something like that. I found it to be annoying at best, and frustrating
most of the time.  I think this has come up here in years past with no
changes ... if Elecraft were to decide to do it, I certainly hope it
will be optional.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 GET/SET command for LINE-IN level?

2018-01-02 Thread Dan AE9K
I too am going to work remote and have a need to get/set the LINE IN level
programmatically. The November 2017 programmers reference still contains no
commands for LINE IN.

Given how it works on the front panel I was expecting the MG (mic gain)
command to return the LINE IN level when in DATA A mode just as the MIC knob
does in DATA A mode. Alas, that's not how the MG command works - it always
returns mic gain without regard to mode.

Is there a way to get/set LINE IN I've overlooked?

Thanks,

Also found a post from a few years back that talked about this too (from Don I

The signals still show on the PX3 display, but not as strongly.
I’ve checked it on all bands and each band has at least one of these signals,
some have up to six showing (with span set to 50.)
The placement of the signals is not the the same from band to band, however no
signal is less than 12khz from the center frequency. Again, tuning up or down
within the band does not affect the displayed signal.

Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] Progressive Tuning Rate

About the only thing I like about using my Drake R4C over my K3S is that I can
cover a lot of band with a couple of twists of the Drake's tuning knob, at
25KHz per rotation. However, it's tough to clarify SSB at that rate, though
it's actually not too fast for CW for me.

I'd love to see the K3S have a progressive tuning rate, with adjustable
parameters - acceleration and max rate. Acceleration would set how fast the
progressive tuning rate advances; max rate would set the absolute max tuning
rate.

If it ends up working anything like that 'feature' on the Yaesu FT-847,
it will certainly not please me - and I will want a way to turn it off.

I find nothing wrong with the tuning rate selection on the K3 or KX3/KX2
using the RATE button(s). In addition, you can set the VFO OFS so that
the VFO B knob can be used for rapid QSY.
Those provide me with controlled QSY operations instead of "somewhere
WAAY up (or down) the band" that I have experienced with other radios
having that feature.

kind of disappointed when it didn’t. So I would like to see it added to the KX2
and KX3.

[Elecraft] Elecraft K3s Power Supply SS30DV

2018-01-02 Thread john
If you desire a small lightweight power supply, the Powerwerx SS-30DV should
be fine. There are some reports of noise on the EHAM reviews but also many 5
star ratings. I use the Powerwerx unit for contest expeditions and I have
not noticed any RFI or other issues.

Re: [Elecraft] Progressive Tuning Rate

2018-01-02 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
I like the tuning rates on my K3S just as it is.   No changes
requested.  And I have radios with variable tuning rates.  They are an
annoyance in my usage.

About the only thing I like about using my Drake R4C over my K3S is
that I can cover a lot of band with a couple of twists of the Drake's
tuning knob, at 25KHz per rotation. However, it's tough to clarify
SSB at that rate, though it's actually not too fast for CW for me.

I'd love to see the K3S have a progressive tuning rate, with
adjustable parameters - acceleration and max rate.  Acceleration
would set how fast the progressive tuning rate advances; max rate
would set the absolute max tuning rate.

[Elecraft] [K3] Ballistic tuning and other feature musings

2018-01-02 Thread inventor61 .
Seems like some requests for ballistic tuning have returned to the
reflector after a long quiet spell. Ballistic tuning is what the JA radios
do when you spin their VFO knob faster; it senses the rotation dynamic and
increments the tuning differently until the rotation speed goes 'back' to a
slower rate.

As a response to the original ballistic tuning feature request made shortly
after the K3 was introduced, a firmware update implemented an option where,
if enabled, the offset encoder (lower right-corner knob) would act as a 1
kHz rate auxiliary 'fast' VFO.

Just like the band-stacking register feature, if one comes 'from' a rig
that had that feature ... to one that doesn't, it's a change that takes a
bit of adjusting to get used to. Some love having it; others decidedly do
NOT. Even harder when you have two rigs and one has it and the other
doesn't!

(The TenTec Omni VI had band-stacking registers but not ballistic tuning.
That was weird.)

I know that the K3 cannot ever have *real* band stacking registers, even
with the K-Pod. There's no dedicated per-band button on the radio so,
that's that. Some have tried to tell me to use other buttons in a
convoluted two-step process. Ergonomically, that's even worse, to me, than
not having the feature to begin with. I always wanted the KPA500 per-band
buttons to be able to enable a band stacking register function on the rig
itself, but that doesn't seem to be possible either. Alas.

With the advent of the new synthesizers and the better-weighted knob, I do
think an optional ballistic tuning feature would be a welcome addition to
my K3. I'd turn that feature on instead of the offset-knob coarse VFO, or
maybe have BOTH enabled. Others would prefer it be left off.

... say ... while I am on the stump, what happened to the other 'board
level' modification for the K3 that was talked about several years ago? I
added the synthesizers and other updates to my K3. Was waiting for the
"big board" to become available.

Ballistic tuning would be a great addition if possible via a software update
and as for the board level modifications I too have been waiting for the
same.

Re: [Elecraft] Progressive Tuning Rate

2018-01-02 Thread Joan
I think it would be nice for a future firmware update to add a progressive
tuning rate. I can imagine the simplest added root menu item: VFO PRG [Disable
(or OFF)/Enable] (rather than complexifying the existing VFO CRS submenu).
Adding more options would be possible for a VFO PRG menu item, e.g.:
[OFF/x5/x10/x20] (where x=equals the currently set Fine or Coarse tuning rate
for the current mode). A non-user-accessible sensing threshold would probably
be acceptable. {One can imagine a VFO PTH; but such an item might tip the
complex-o-meter needle past the ‘needlessly complex’ mark} ;)

More than 7 chars in the VFO B alphanumeric display would be helpful, although
it’s too late to change that. This will have to wait for the introduction of
the high-res colour raster displays of the KX4 and K4s.  {I’m making this up}

[Elecraft] K1, K2 and K3 sales/auctions not on eBay?

2018-01-02 Thread Jim Low man
When I get home after being in the hospital and rehab mostly since mid-August,
I need to thin the herd-and not only Elecraft items.

I checked eBay for sales/auctions for these three transceivers, and came up
empty. Maybe it’s the time of year. Maybe it’s the commissions?

Of course, I would first offer them to members of this list and QRP-L, rather
than making eBay and PayPal any richer.

Ideas?

No worries-I will keep my loaded K3S, KX3 and accessories.
