Re: [Elecraft] The case of the deaf P3

2018-01-20 Thread Keith Onishi
I have similar experience, but by different cause.
My P3 sometimes went almost deaf. When that became frequently, I tried to make
troubleshooting.
First, I suspected K3’s IF out buffer amp, but finally I found that the IF
interface (between K3 and P3) coaxial cable supplied by Elecraft was the cause.
Either fitting between coaxial cable and BNC connector or BNC connector itself
might be wrong. Replacing the cable with my home-made cable have completely
solved the problem.

Re: [Elecraft] K1-2-Band-Module for sale on eBay...

2018-01-20 Thread Edward R Cole

Tom,
Where did you get this idea? I ship close to two dozen
international postal packages every year and they are all insurable,
though the max value does vary by destination country. For most of
EU its up to $200 and included in the shipping fee (Not an optional
charge). Some countries will give you the option to buy more
insurance for an extra charge just like its done for shipping within
the 50 states. Of course if you are shipping to N. Korea or Iran or
other such country with little or no trade agreements with the USA,
then there may not be any insurance available. You can always make
that decision on a case-by-case purchase offer. Carte Blanc refusal
to sell outside the 48-states (what CONUS usually implies) really
limits your market.

BTW if you are shipping parcel post instead of priority mail you
should compare costs. There is little saving by choosing parcel post.

If you are shipping big expensive items then UPS, etc. may be better.

BTW all my Elecraft purchases were sent via priority mail. I have to
go to the PO to get them. UPS/FedEx just drops the box at my front
door without alerting me so much higher risk of being stolen.

***I occasionally sell on eBay and I have one simple reason for Conus only.
Packages sent out of the US cannot be insured, at least through USPS, so if
they are lost or damaged you have no recourse.*** Tom, k2bew

Re: [Elecraft] recommendations for CW paddles under $125

2018-01-20 Thread Morgan Bailey, II
I have had excellent luck with the Kent TP-1. It runs a little more than
$125. I think you can pick them up for around $160. It is my main key and I
take it with me everywhere I operate including field day. It has served me
well for many thousands of qso's without the need for re-adjustment or
polishing the contacts.

[Elecraft] K3 won't TX in FT-8

2018-01-20 Thread Larry Libsch

Group,

I am unable to get my K3 to TX any RF when set up for FT-8.
Hardware is K3, Behringer U-phoria UMC202HD USB sound card running on
WIN XP with most recent version of WSJT-X software. FT-8 settings Radio
Tab: baud 38,400, data 8, stop 1, handshake none, PTT CAT, Mode
data/packet, split none. Tests of CAT and PTT are both successful.
Soundcard tab is set for the Behringer card.

Soundcard is cabled to LIne In, Line Out on K3. I am in Data A
(USB) mode. K3 Menu Mic Sel is set to line in/line out. Waterfall
displays signals and they decode properly.

When I click the tune button in the FT-8 software, the K3 goes
into transmit but there is no RF out. When I press the tune button on
the K3 I do get RF out. When we briefly attached a headphones plug to
the soundcard out lead that had been connected to the K3 line in we
could hear the tuning tone when clicking on the tune button in FT-8. I
do AFSK RTTY without difficulty so I do not think the line in jack is
faulty.

        Ideas, please.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 won't TX in FT-8

2018-01-20 Thread Don Wilhelm

Larry,

FT-8 is no different than any other data mode, so if other data modes
work look carefully at the FT-8 computer setup.

One thing I can say is that you must have 4 bars of ALC showing with the
5th bar flickering. If you have no indication on the ALC meter, that
means the K3 is not getting enough audio from your software application,
and you will have to find out why - perhaps the "power" slider in the
FT-8 application is set too low.

You might want to take a look at the data mode setup on my website
www.w3fpr.com. In the left column scroll down to the last entry and
click on it to get to the article.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 won't TX in FT-8

2018-01-20 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
This says the Line Gain on the K3 is too low.   Or the PWR slider on the
WSJT right side is too low.   Be sure in the F2 menu / Settings, the
Audio panel has the correct  Audio IN and Audio OUT selected under
Soundcard.   Should be USB CODEC.

Don's info is very correct and very complete.   Don't pay attention to
what others advise unless they have a K3 or K3S or KX3.  Their advice on
audio levels will be incorrect as the Elecraft radios handle audio and
power quite differently the JA radios.

Re: [Elecraft] AF Balance

Ken,

The answer is YES.
See the SUB AF menu on page 60 of the manual. Basically, if you set SUB
AF to Balance, you will have the gain of both the main and subRX on the
AF Gain, and the SubRX gain control becomes a balance knob.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-01-20 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

It has been a very good day to sit by the fire and read.  The best
time to catch up on my reading is when the power goes out; there is
nothing else to do :)  A few days reading by kerosene lantern is enough
to get caught up on month's of books and magazines.  When those are done
I get out the math books and work on tensors.  Maybe one day they'll
come naturally.

The days are a few minutes longer but the sun is no more active.
Solar winds have kept the ionosphere from collapsing but only just.  I
expect my signal will land near the East Coast.  I have been hearing a
lot of 1 calls very well over the last month. For five to ten minutes
they have good signals and then the QSB eats them then another signal
pops out of the mist.

Please join us tomorrow on:

14050 kHz at 2300z Sunday (3 PM PST Sunday)
7045 kHz at 0100z Monday (5 PM PST Sunday)

73,
Kevin. KD5ONS
