Re: [Elecraft] TX Gain Calibration Fails on 6 meters

2019-03-12 Thread hawley, charles j jr
I had the 50 MHz gain cal fail with the initial build of my K3s. Don't remember
which power. I repeated the cal several times and one time it passed. I left it
there. Not anxious to try it again.

Subject: [Elecraft] TX Gain Calibration Fails on 6 meters

I purchased Elecraft K3S S/N 11672 in August 2018. The build was completed in
November 2018. At that time all the tests and calibrations were completed
successfully.

Now the TX Gain Calibration fails on Low Power and High Power on 50 MHz. only.

Page 67 of Elecraft K3S owners manual TXGN Description states LP 0-12W and
HP 13-120W.

On 160-10 meters I hear the relay switch from LP to HP amplifier when the power
adjustment is increased from 12 to 13W as described.

On 6 meters the relay switches from LP to HP amplifier when the power is
adjusted from 8 to 9W.

The error message states “TX Calibration failed because Transmit Power did not
reach the expected value.”

The TX calibration is performed per the instructions into a proper 50 ohm dummy
load.

I submitted this to Elecraft Support last week but have not received a
response, so I thought I would ask the group for ideas.

Thanks in advance.

I think instead I'll go the route of always leaving it in line, but that

One method (there are others) is to connect a dummy load to the KPA1500, and
do a TUNE for each bin in those ranges. The tuner will then learn to go into

I'm going to change the way I do things so that ATU is always in, and the

Just a general comment on the KPA1500: My experience with it shows that the
SWR has to be below 1.2:1 at the amplifier output (ATU input) to run
reliably at full power. If the SWR is higher than that, the amp will often
fault due to excessive current or drive power before reaching 1500 W. (And
may splatter on SSB.) Elecraft recently updated the ATU firmware to
consistently find a better match, and it really helps.

I wholeheartedly agree!

Don has helped so many with his vast knowledge and patience.

I have seen him at many Hamfests teaching the masses about Elecraft products.

His comments and answers to questions on this list go unmatched anywhere.

Those who have sent radios in to him to repair over the ages know his
commitment to Elecraft and Amateur Radio in general.

I would like to add my support to Don as my favorite Elecraft Elmer!

Don Wilhelm - I enjoy his down to earth advice that doesn't require
more than a tenth grade education to understand. Note, however, there
are many others well worth listening to also.

I belong to a couple of groups (for other equipment and OS) and I can
assure everyone - the Elecraft reflector is unique. Ask a question and
you will get an answer - without snide responses.

Re: [Elecraft] Working Split with a Sub RX

2019-03-12 Thread Bill Frantz
I suspect listening to the DX on the main receiver and the
pileup on the sub receiver came about with the radios which have
a better main than sub. (Not the K3(S)!) In this situation, you
want to use the good receiver for the weak DX station, and the
poorer for all the stronger pileup stations.

Dxpeditions operate, transmitting on VFO-B and scanning the pileup on VFO-A.

The Left-Mix-Right menu option is great, since it allows you to easily do
whichever mode seems right for your style of operating.

I have always thought the K3 did it backwards.
Before the K3 I had a transceiver and a seperate RX above it.
The Receiver listened to the DX station and the Transceiver would tune to
find who was working him at the moment. Then the pounce!
So with the K3 I don't use the SPLIT button. I use the Sub on the DX station
and I lock it and then I use the transceiver knob to find the guys working
split. If you have a P3 attached you can see it and the P3 will put you
there instantaneously.

I think that's a better way to work split. Would love to hear from those
that agree or disagree.

I am going to recommend Mike Blake K9JRI. He is an excellent diagnostician and
understands a schematic better than most folks. He’s also an experienced
networking engineer and administrator which goes a long way to solving some of
the issues that seem hardware based at first.

Re: [Elecraft] Settings for Digital use

2019-03-12 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Are you using DATA A for most daata modes and AFSK A for RTTY?

Have you made sure there is *nothing* connected to the Line In jack?

Have you confirmed that MENU:MIC+LINE = OFF?

*AFTER* selecting DATA A/FSK A have you set MENU:MIC SEL = Line In?

*AFTER* selecting DATA A/AFSK A have you adjusted the mic gain for
*FOUR BARS* of ALC? The Mic Gain control is "overloaded." The
Line In defaults to *0* and can not be adjusted until you have
selected DATA A/AFSK A.

Finally, in AFSK A if CONFIG:AFSK TX = FIL ON, make sure that the
MARK frequency in MMTTY is the same as PITCH and do not tune by
"clicking in the waterfall".

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 tuner questions

2019-03-12 Thread K9MA
Just a general comment on the KPA1500: My experience with it shows that the SWR
has to be below 1.2:1 at the amplifier output (ATU input) to run reliably at
full power. If the SWR is higher than that, the amp will often fault due to
excessive current or drive power before reaching 1500 W. (And may splatter on
SSB.) Elecraft recently updated the ATU firmware to consistently find a better
match, and it really helps.

Nice solution, but it considers only a connection to a PC. If that is

The KIO2 AUX I/O connector also contains internal K2 signals that are

Keeping it neat using cable ties is essential when you re-install the top cover so that they do not get pinched or lay on top of the RF board. The problem I did have was the cable from the KIO2 meeting at the AUX board. The KIO2 cable was too long and stiff which resulted in it trying to twist the board off the control board. Forming the KIO2 cable into an S-shape helped reduce some of the twisting.

Brian,

No problem with the KAT2 installed.  Ty-wrap the speaker cable to the
KAT2 cable, but do not put any ty-wraps at the end of the battery.
If the speaker wire has ty-wraps that fall at the end of the battery, cut them
off.

[Elecraft] K3 RS 232 Data

2019-03-12 Thread Dana Shtun
Im running my k3 with transverters up to 5.7 Ghz. Its running fine

I ran into a puzzle however with VE3NEA’s Omnirig, in
that it stops reading at 1296 Mhz and doesn’t display anything
higher.
Looking at the INI file doesn’t seem to show anything that
should stop it.
Has anyone run into this before??
I’m wondering if its something hard coded in his program.
I’ve queried him but no response as yet.

Re: [Elecraft] Settings for Digital use

2019-03-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jay,

Do you have the soundcard (AUDIO CODEC) properly defined as the
soundcard in your application software? That is the 1st step to check.

Secondly, are you driving the soundcard output audio to a sufficient
level to illuminate 4 bars solid on the ALC meter with the 5th bar
flashing? Depending on what digital modes you are using, you may have
up to 3 controls for the transmit audio level.

Take a look at my website www.w3fpr.com article on this subject. Scroll
to the last article in the left column and click to view the document.
Ignore the common internet advice - Elecraft transceivers control power
differently than other amateur transceivers.

Re: [Elecraft] Settings for Digital use

Jay,
If you are in data A mode, the easiest thing to do is just turn on
your VOX. The tones will turn your transmitter on. Just make sure you
set the mike/line in setting so that there are 4 bars of ALC showing and
a 5th just flickering. You may need to adjust the VOX gain, but it
should work well this way. This is what I do and have had no problems.

2019-03-12 Thread Harry Yingst via Elecraft
Yes that is the downside to it, so something to consider for those who may
want that option.

 Henry,

Nice solution, but it considers only a connection to a PC.  If that is
all you want, that is fine.

The KIO2 AUX I/O connector also contains internal K2 signals that are
used for an externally mounted KPA100/KAT100 as well as the XVseries
transverters.

2019-03-12 Thread Harry Yingst via Elecraft
 On my K2 I installed a USB Mini-B Female 5V DB9 interface in place of KIO2
Part # DB9-USB-D5-F
It's powered by the computer not the K2 so it draws no power from the K2

Brian,

No problem with the KAT2 installed.  Ty-wrap the speaker cable to the
KAT2 cable, but do not put any ty-wraps at the end of the battery.
If the speaker wire has ty-wraps that fall at the end of the battery, cut them
off.

Re: [Elecraft] [EXTERNAL] Re: ELECRAFT K2. Installing KBT2 with KIO2 in place

2019-03-12 Thread Pawlak, Daniel L
I just built the KIO2 and installed it with my KBT2 and KAT2 already in place.
It was a tight fit, but did not restrict the module or the cable. Keeping it
neat using cable ties is essential when you re-install the top cover so that
they do not get pinched or lay on top of the RF board. The problem I did have
was the cable from the KIO2 meeting at the AUX board. The KIO2 cable was too
long and stiff which resulted in it trying to twist the board off the control
board. Forming the KIO2 cable into an S-shape helped reduce some of the
twisting.
