[Elecraft] Possibly dumb question
Hi Folks, Thanks to all for the response to my question. While I do not intend to upload the configuration of one K3 to another, I do want to have the MENU and CONFIG information pulled from the radio. It appears that Win4K3suite will do this and I have downloaded the 30 day free trial version to play with and will go from there. Thanks again for the great information. This is a great list for the best radio I have ever owned. 73, Bob AD7Z __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 v. 2.10
My observations are similar. With 2.10, the LED peaks now consistently match the numerical readings on my LP-700 digital power meter, The blue LCD power readings no longer reflect PEAK power on sideband. Rather they go up & down in a blur and thus are unreadable. In key down tune operations, the LCD power numbers accurately match the LP-700. 73 Torrey N9PY (#52) -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Roy Morris, Jr. via Elecraft Sent: Saturday, March 30, 2019 10/22:57 PM To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] KPA1500 v. 2.10 After loading v.2.10 the LEDs seem to show the correct power level at or near the 1500 watt level. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report
Good Evening, QRM got out of hand on the second net. I just cannot compete with those running power. But, it is not about competition it's about finding out how you all are doing. The biting flies are just beginning to dominate the landscape so I'm grumpy :) (later in the year I'll be Sneazy) The weather is so nice I want to be outside but they make life difficult. Luckily I have a greenhouse to work in so I can be outside but still protected from their nastiness. Twenty meters had a quiet band. Both Roy and Mike had strong signals. Mike had a few bars of QSB while Roy held steady. They both mentioned using the KPA1500. On forty meters we had an initially quiet band with all the calls sending simultaneously. I was only able to copy the final V from out of the howl. Spring is hitting parts of the US but AB9V mentioned a new snowfall. Those south of me all mentioned sun followed by a rainy week. I guess I'm the only one with the newly hatched biting flies. Woo hoo! I did see my first hummingbird this morning so tomorrow I'll start feeding them. They are very late this year. But without bugs and flowers they can't maintain their busy lifestyle. I understand the configuration file saved by the K3 Utility is serialized for the specific radio. To load or restore, the serial number in the file must match the serial number embedded in the radio. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 3/31/2019 8:08 PM, Nr4c wrote: No way to do this. Sorry. Win4K3Suite saves the configuration to an .XML file. I don't know if it can be loaded on a different radio or not. The items populate a screen, so a screenshot could be saved as well. I opened the .XML file as a table in Excel, but the screenshot would be more usable/readable as it has configuration items from the K3 programmer's manual. Re: [Elecraft] Possibly dumb question...
Don't hold me to this, but I believe there is a way to do it if you have Win4K3Suite. Win4K3Suite can read the menu settings from a K3. Not the gain and compensation values, but the menu items we would typically like to have in more than one radio like RX EQ, TX EQ, AGC SLP, AGC THR etc. Win4K3Suite allows you to save those settings to a file to be reloaded into the K3 later. Once you have saved the menu settings, I would think you could shut down Win4K3Suite, disconnect the USB cable from K3 number one and connect it to the second K3, bring Win4K3Suite back up and load that menu settings file to the second K3. Then save the configuration of the second K3. I do have Win4K3Suite. I have not tried this. But it would be interesting to try. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be able to shoot a hole in my theory. Tom, the author of Win4K3Suite probably can give us the answer off the top of his head. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Remote antenna tuner
Let me add that even a quarter wave vertical is rarely a perfect match. The 50 ohm point is almost never the same as the j0 point. HF broadcasters don’t even try for a match. Typically open wire line is used and the match is achieved at the transmitter output network. They pump up to 500KW into VSWRs over 2:1. You can use the K3 utility from Elecraft to save the configuration to a file and load it to the second radio. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Remote antenna tuner
I also disagree. AM broadcast verticals are designed to achieve a desired pattern and main lobe elevation angle. Over flat ground, 225 degrees will optimize the ground wave coverage. However, higher powered stations will then suffer from self-interference at the coverage edges because the sky wave and ground wave interfere. It's common to shorten the antenna a bit to perhaps 195 degrees or so which tends to reduce the self-interference. Once the pattern and main lobe angle have been defined, the feed point is matched to the transmission line with an appropriate network. Neither 225 degrees [5/8 wave] nor 195 degrees are resonant lengths and both require a matching network. Many hams do not have the luxury of resonant antennas on every band. It seems perfectly reasonable to employ some sort of matching network to match the feed point to the coax on bands where it is not resonant AND/OR does not present a 50 ohm load to the coax and needing to do so does not imply there's something wrong with the antenna. 73, Fred ["Skip"] K6DGW Sparks NV DM09dn Washoe County On 3/31/2019 9:44 AM, W2xj wrote: I would disagree. Hi Folks, I have been trying to find a way to "dump" or list out all the settings in my K3s for the MENU options as well as the settings for the CONFIG options without going through the front panel display and writing them all down. The reason is to be able to make the same settings on another K3s, again without having to sit and go through the settings one by one and write them down. I did use the K3s utility to make a configuration file and saved it but if I try to look at the file, I get what looks like gibberish and it is not easily interpreted. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 No Power out on 80 meters
This happened to me too on 40 meters with an antenna that was less than 2:1 SWR. There are a lot of factors that can impact the longevity of the parts in the amp... over voltage/ over current can happen depending on the components of the impedance. -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Tom KG3V Sent: Sunday, March 31, 2019 2:30 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] KPA-500 No Power out on 80 meters I believe I have fried the 80 meter circuitry in my KPA-500. I am contacting Elecraft about possible repairs, but would also be interested in other's input. Here is what happened: I was using a multi-band antenna and the SWR was high on 80m. I use a KAT-500 with the Amp at all times. My (naive) thinking was that if the KAT-500 could successfully tune it, the Amp was safe. In the past, this seemed to have been the case. I use an IC-7600 and have the KEY line connected, as well as the PA KEY line between the Tuner and the Amp. Every time I changed frequencies on the 80 meter Band, I would TUNE before operating. At one point, I noticed "that smell" of hot components, and was then unable to transmit on 80 meters. In testing this morning, I get no output from the Amp on 80 meters only. All other Bands seem to be fine. I can use 80 meters with the Amp in Bypass mode, so I do not suspect a problem with the Tuner. Today, it continues to work fine on several other bands with full power output. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 No Power out on 80 meters
Tom I did something similar on 6M, but I fixed it myself. 2 things. One, pull the logs off the Amp and that will tell the story. Next, you will have to open it up and see if you have burned anything in the LPF board. It will be pretty obvious. If you are ok with working on that, it is fixable. If not, you'll have to send it home for a repair. Mike va3mw On Sun, Mar 31, 2019 at 3:30 PM Tom KG3V wrote: > I believe I have fried the 80 meter circuitry in my KPA-500. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Remote antenna tuner
I would disagree. Most high power commercial operations use non-resonant mismatched antennas. Typically there is either a tuner at the antenna or open wire is used. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Remote antenna tuner
In my case I have 2x 8.5m wire only. How to use it on 80m .. 10m ? A tuner is required!! Here I use a modified version of a symmetrical tuner AT-502 (www.hamware.de), which works perfectly with my K3 (#1804). vy 73 de Helmut DL2MAJ Am 31/03/2019 um 18:13 schrieb Ken G Kopp: If an antenna is showing a VSVR of 3:1, something about the situation is wrong, and most likely it's -not- the antenna. [Elecraft] radio and amplifier tuner
Hello just to know how is the correct way to use tuner, for example on an antenna that have SWR 2:1, I use the K3 internal antenna tuner to adjust it, and then I tune my amplifier (old tube amplifier) With the KPA1500, that have antenna tuner, how is the right way to use tuners on radio and amplifier May I use the K3 internal antenna tuner or not? thanks for the feedback -- 73, Jorge CX6VM/CW5W __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Remote Tuner?
I too would be interested in a remote tuner from Elecraft that would support either at the 500 or 1500 watt level. 73, Art Peters, K0ACP k0...@k0acp.com > On Mar 31, 2019, at 11:11 AM, Richard Thorne wrote: > > How about a remote tuner option? > > Maybe the KAT-500 repackaged so the tuner can be installed at the feed point. > Have voltage and control signals sent down the coax vs a separate control > line? > > As a 2nd option a beefed up remote tuner to handle the KPA-1500? > > I know there's been talk of a K4 or KX4 which would be nice, but a remote > tuner would probably fit a lot of need. [Elecraft] Elecraft Remote Tuner?
How about a remote tuner option? Maybe the KAT-500 repackaged so the tuner can be installed at the feed point. Have voltage and control signals sent down the coax vs a separate control line? As a 2nd option a beefed up remote tuner to handle the KPA-1500? I know there's been talk of a K4 or KX4 which would be nice, but a remote tuner would probably fit a lot of need. If I have an antenna with a an swr higher than 3:1, and a tuner is required, it's better off at the antenna than in the shack. [Elecraft] KPA1500 v. 2.10
I am seeing the same thing with the DIGITAL power metering. My LED bar graphs are working perfectly. It seems like the digital metering is not triggering correctly or not delaying correctly. The digital metering is acting very erratically on SSB and CW. It works perfectly on a Tune Carrier. I think this could be easily fixed in a Firm Ware update. 73's Ron Durie WB4OOA Elecraft K-Line 704-843-3681 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Seems that the ammeter current is also much more erratic reading now while sending CW.
