Well, thanks to the burners, most of Gerlach has cell coverage, free wifi, 2m
and 440M repeaters - linked to IRLP, and they have even installed their own
cell tower out near the Trego Hot Springs for cell coverage out in the Black
Rock. It's funny to zip by the hot springs on a 70MPH locomotive and see a
cell tower out in the "middle of BFE"! And, they didn't have to disguise
it as one of those off colored green looking pine trees - like up near W7RN -
to get it "approved"...But I always have the little KX2 with me - just can't
use it "locomotive mobile" anymore ;-(

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 ATU operation

2019-12-11 Thread charles
Thanks to Dick for the detailed explanation of the tuner. I didn't know
about the 8 Kc resolution limitation of the tuner. Even with plus or
minus 8 Kc I should still be with a segment or two of the actual
frequency, so I should be lower than 1.5:1 SWR. Thanks everyone.

[Elecraft] SSB Net 12-8-2019

2019-12-11 Thread Eric Lanzl
Here is the list of stations that checked in to the Net on Sunday 12-8. Again
thank you to the relay stations as the propagation was good then bad and good
again.

Also, a question for the members of the net and others. We were wondering if
there might be an interest in having a 40 meter frequency in addition to our
14.303.5 frequency. We can have the 40 meter net after the 20m net or split the
time 1/2 hour on 20,1/2 hour for the 40 meter net. Another option is to hold
the 40 meter net at a different time. I would welcome your input on this idea.
Also, any suggestions for a frequency for the net. It should be in the general
portion of the band to give all stations a chance to check in.

Yes but the only thing I bought directly from the company was a T1 tuner which
is not a big ticket item.  Actually with that I had a question during the build
I sent to tech support.  I wanted to know about the design choices because it
didn't make a lot of sense to me that a device like that be designed to match
pretty low impedances like a short vertical, in any case I wanted to use it for
tuning end fed half waves so I wanted to replace the capacitors with smaller
values to optimize that intended use.  Next thing I know I am emailing with the
designer.  That surprised me.  Recently Wayne again was helping me with sorting
out the audio artifacts I was having on my KX3.  I have a KX3, PX3 and 100 watt
amp now but I didn't buy any of that stuff directly from Elecraft, but that
didn't matter in terms of the support I got from the company.  That kind of
customer support is the sort of thing that stic
ks in memory.  I am just re-entering this hobby after a couple of decades away
and I have no idea at this point if I may one day decide to buy a rig in the
class of the K4 but if I ever find myself considering an option like that one
day, my experiences with this company will certainly inform my decision making
process.

[Elecraft] Waterfall question from a new waterfall guy

2019-12-11 Thread Ryan Scott Bardsley

Hello,

I am a very very new KX3 and PX3 owner and have been using this as my portable
kit when I travel to NYC. I spend most of my life traveling in hotels, so I
can't say I have really reached out to the world yet, but it certainly makes
the stay a bit more fun. The KX3 and PX3 combo has been wonderful to bring on
the train, setup at the hotel, and fiddle around with after work.

I have a naïve question about the waterfall. What exactly are the vertical
lines that seem to follow the VFO as I tune around? Are they the resonant
frequencies of the KX3? I am running both units on a battery, so I can't
imagine it is noise from a wall wart. But I seem to see the same thing when
operating at home. On the PX3, I see the green freq/bandwidth bar move when I
rotate the VFO on the KX3. But the vertical traces seem to follow along with
that.

Being very new to this functionality... what exactly am I seeing?

I made a short video here: https://youtu.be/v3iwWgsIDok

Many thanks, and I love the chatter about how great a company Elecraft it. I
have not had a single issue with my radio and am really happy with my purchase.

Impossible.

Growing up in Minnesota, it was customary to reveal - at an appropriate age -
not only the truth about Santa Claus (I won't go into that right now), but the
fact that there is, was, and forever will be only one (1) fruitcake in

It just gets passed around every year.

It's caused by the excess of fruitcake in MN. All the fruitcake
[chemical symbol Fc] in the universe was created at the Big Bang, along
with a lot of hydrogen [H] and some Helium [He]. It is governed by the
well-known Conservation of Fruitcake law ... you cannot destroy it,
however you can give it away. It and aluminum foil [Rw] have a mutual
affinity for each other. For reasons still unknown, it tends to
accumulate in the upper midwest. Fruitcake absorbs electromagnetic
radiation very well and is probably the cause of your dead zone.

Keep in mind, what you experienced does not scale in business.

Image if 50% of Elecraft’s customers wanted to call today and talk to Wayne or

stuff.

This is why they all have staff. :)

I am just re-entering this hobby after a couple of decades away
and I have no idea at this point if I may one day decide to buy a rig in the
class of the K4 but if I ever find myself considering an option like that one
day, my experiences with this company will certainly inform my decision making
process.

Mike,

Actually, that really hasn't been my experience except Elecraft and
Tentec which is no longer in business. I remember a call to Elecraft
around 2100L EST when I ran into trouble when building my K2. The tech
answered the phone and we spent about an hour trouble shooting a test
that wasn't right. It turned out to be a bad capacitor, BUT the tech was
the designer, Wayne. My experience with Elecraft has been over the top,
but dealing directly with the developer has been something else.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 ATU operation

2019-12-11 Thread Andy Durbin
"If it were up to me, I would not allow the counter to have priority unless the
frequency difference is at least several bin's worth. That way, transmission
wouldn't be needlessly interrupted because of the low counter resolution, but
the amp would still be protected against erroneous data from the radio"

The same issue exists for the KAT500 and I have proposed that, when CAT tuning
is present, that RF frequency override should be based on a time magnitude
monitor. That would mean small differences between RF and CAT frequency would
have to exist for a long time before RF took priority and that a large
difference would result in immediate correction of a gross VAT frequency error.
The constants time and magnitude would be adjustable by the user.

I got so annoyed with RF freq taking priority that I have defeated RF tuning
for my KAT500.

Keep in mind, what you experienced does not scale in business.

Image if 50% of Elecraft’s customers wanted to call today and talk to Wayne or
Eric. That would not allow him to be working on the K4 or other new special
stuff.

This is why they all have staff. :)

We discovered yesterday that the photo of the AX1 on eHam was so fuzzy that it
was unrecognizable as a material object, must less a whip antenna. That's been

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 ATU operation

2019-12-11 Thread K9MA
One thing that may confuse things is that the frequency counter has only
8 kHz (?) resolution, and it takes priority over data from the radio.
I'm unsure about this, as my KPA1500 doesn't often seem to change ATU
setting when start transmitting. It is possible, though, that the low
resolution counter thinks the frequency is in an adjacent bin.

If it were up to me, I would not allow the counter to have priority
unless the frequency difference is at least several bin's worth. That
way, transmission wouldn't be needlessly interrupted because of the low
counter resolution, but the amp would still be protected against
erroneous data from the radio. But Dick probably has more important
things to worry about.

I should have checked for a new manual since the manual that came with
my KPA-1500 has 20 Kc bins which I see are now 10 Kc bins.  In
addition, the tuning frequencies have been changed to 10 Kc
increments.  I think that is why I was getting unexplained results
from the tuner as I tuned across the band.  I will "re-teach" the
KPA-1500 using these new parameters.

Just to make sure, however, does everyone agree the current concept is
the first bin on 80m would be 10 Kc wide (3.500 to 3.510) and the
correct tune-up frequency to "teach" the KPA-1500 for that bin would
be 3.505 Kc ?

Secondly, the KPA-1500 would proceed to the next "taught" tuning
parameters (at 3.515) when the xcvr frequency would cross into the
next bin slightly higher than 3.510 ?

Would appreciate all interest parties to agree or disagree with this
scenario.

Thanks for all the comments, I'm glad Electraft made the bin size
smaller because feedpoint impedances can change rapidly on 80M.

Thanks, K5UA

But it's NOT one rig, it's four, counting those three transverters, and
the combined cost of the 2M and 432 transverters is greater than the
cost of a fine FM rig, which includes all of the PL tones, memories, and

From where I sit, those transverters are great for modes other than FM

Kenwood FM rigs (mobile, base, and talkie) for this mode on VHF and UHF.

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 ATU operation

2019-12-11 Thread charles
I should have checked for a new manual since the manual that came with
my KPA-1500 has 20 Kc bins which I see are now 10 Kc bins. In addition,
the tuning frequencies have been changed to 10 Kc increments. I think
that is why I was getting unexplained results from the tuner as I tuned
across the band. I will "re-teach" the KPA-1500 using these new
parameters.

Just to make sure, however, does everyone agree the current concept is
the first bin on 80m would be 10 Kc wide (3.500 to 3.510) and the
correct tune-up frequency to "teach" the KPA-1500 for that bin would be
3.505 Kc ?

Secondly, the KPA-1500 would proceed to the next "taught" tuning
parameters (at 3.515) when the xcvr frequency would cross into the next
bin slightly higher than 3.510 ?

Would appreciate all interest parties to agree or disagree with this
scenario.

Thanks for all the comments, I'm glad Electraft made the bin size
smaller because feedpoint impedances can change rapidly on 80M.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Help!!

2019-12-11 Thread Michael Walker
Hi Ted

It is very difficult to design an amp that does what you ask. Yes, my ACOM
wasn’t bad, but it still have some variance if I went from 160M to 6M.

Every amp I have owned has required different drive on each band. I have
worked that into my procedure that every time I change bands I confirm drive
levels to be sure.

There are some solutions that works well with other radios if you want this
fully automated. The Flex world of radios has some excellent auto drive tools
(DDUTIL). Sorry, I don’t know if there is something that would work for your
radio.l

Sorry it isn’t what you expected.

What caused you to change from your ACOM 2000? It sounds like it was a perfect
match for you.

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 ATU operation

2019-12-11 Thread Andy Durbin
"If you are polling the transceiver and have fairly recent version of firmware,
the ATU will change frequency at the boundary of the segment, with no
hysteresis. Twiddle your VFO knob in standby and you will here the relays
clicking right at the edges."

An explanation of how the tuner follows VFO frequency is probably incomplete
without understanding how RF detected frequency can override the VFO frequency.
Someone familiar with KPA1500 may provide the details. I'm only familiar
with KAT500 and I don't find the same tailoring parameters (FCCS and FCMD) in
the KPA1500 programming reference.
