[Elecraft] K3 Utility "Killed" K3, Can't Force Reload?

2020-11-19 Thread Rick Tavan
After a computer configuration change, I needed to figure out which COM
port my K3 was coming up on. I ran K3 Utility and started trying COM ports.
After several "Port Closed" responses, I tried another and the rig began
sending *AA* and other stuff repeatedly. I couldn't stop it with the XMIT
button, so I hit POWER to turn off the radio. Now, when I touch POWER the
LCD lights up plain yellow as long as I hold POWER but as soon as I let go,
the screen goes blank. I tried to begin the Forced Reload protocol by
disconnecting power for 10 seconds, reconnecting, and HOLDing POWER for >10
seconds but, after at least 20 seconds, the MCU LD message still hadn't
appeared. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

/Rick N6XI

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 silkscreen gotcha

2020-11-19 Thread Rich
My issue is getting mine to work with an Icom as a band decoder for my
band pass filter.  At one time it worked great with my Pro III, but I
cannot get it to work with the 7300.   Elecraft provided help to no
avail either.   Everything checks out fine.

Based on your info R12 should be 47ohm, correct?

The circuit diagram and the parts placement in the manual are correct. On mine
it was the silkscreen for R12 and R13 that was reversed. Let Jack do some

I have a Rev C PCB and the silkscreen does not match the diagram in the Rev C

I can send pics if you want them.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 silkscreen gotcha

2020-11-19 Thread Gordon LaPoint
I have two KRC2's, one uses the aux-bus line with a K3 and the other
uses the RS232 with a Kenwood TS590sg. The only problems I have had are
all self induced with programing errors!
They both work flawlessly and have for years, one drives a WX0b Six Pak,
the other drives a MFJ RCS-20Lx switch.

The KRC2 wasn’t responding at all hence the start of fault finding and the
findings I posted. As soon as the resistors were corrected everything worked as
it should without issue.

Hope this helps.

2020-11-19 Thread Rich

Thanks for the info.   Could you post the correct value of R12 and R13?

Mine was back at Elecraft way back.   I want to make sure it is already
not corrected

Based on your info R12 should be 47ohm, correct?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 silkscreen gotcha

2020-11-19 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
After seeing this report I pulled the Rev C PCB (the only PCB we have shipped
for this product) and took a good look at it, then looked at the docs and
finally the Gerbers for the board.
R12 and R13 on the KRC2 PCB are properly labelled. R12, closest to the
switches, is a 4.7K ohm resistor (yellow-violet-red) used to pull the RS232
line to -12V.
R13 is next to it, closest to the DE9 connectors is a 47 ohm resistor
(yellow-violet-black) and provides +12V power for the JFET.
The legends on the PCB and in Figure 10 of the KRC2 Rev C manual are correct.

Now, what caused you to think they were backwards? And, let’s make sure that
you do have a Rev C board in your KRC2.

It probably wouldn't be too difficult to implement. I have seen code for a

it would be easy to compute and send band to KPA500 and frequency to KAT500.

No motivation here though and I don't know if anyone has published a

Many years ago, a homebrew CI-V to RS232 interface was published in QST,
and about 15 years ago, I bought two at a Chicago area hamfest that a
ham had made a small business of building and selling. It worked fine

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500+KAT500 interfacing

2020-11-19 Thread Ken Winterling
I would like to see an Icom CI-V interface for the KPA500/KAT500
combination. This is built into the KPA1500 which is a combination
amp/tuner/antenna selector switch. The KPA1500 "speaks" Elecraft, Kenwood,
Yaesu, and Icom. The KPA500 can use Icom "band data" voltages but that
doesn't support the WARC bands. There is also no communication with the
KAT500 to tell it what band/antenna to use.

Yes, the KPA500/KAT500 combination switches perfectly to the proper band,
frequency, and antenna on *transmit *but does nothing on receive. When
just listening it is necessary to manually press the ANT(tenna) button on
the KAT500 to select the proper antenna for the selected frequency (band)
on the Icom radio. If you are trying to scan memories that doesn't work at
all. Having the ability for the KAT500 to follow the receiver so it could
select the proper band/antenna would be very helpful.

Has anybody built such an interface or know of an existing commercial
device that will perform the above function?

Re: [Elecraft] CONFIG PTT-KEY Parameter

Does the same thing happen if you disconnect the computer?

Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so, how did you solved it?

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Transmit Display Failure

2020-11-19 Thread Alan Bloom
My first thought is there might be an intermittent RS-232 connection
between the K3 and the P3.  That would prevent the P3 receiving the TX
and RX commands from the K3 so that the P3 gets hung up in TX or RX
mode.  If you can lay your hands on a spare RS-232 cable, I would try it
to see if that fixes the problem.

If the RS-232 connection is confirmed OK and the problem still occurs, then:

Have you tried cycling power without restoring the config file?  If it
really does require the config file restoration to restore proper
operation then it must be some setting that is accidentally getting
changed.  That can sometimes be caused by some computer software sending
commands to the P3 via RS-232.  Try running the K3/P3 with no RS-232
connection to the computer and see if you still see the problem.

If the problem occurs with no connection between the K3/P3 and the
computer and you can confirm that it does require a config restore to
get back to normal operation, then it sounds like the EEPROM in the P3
must be going bad.  I have never heard of that happening, but I guess
it's possible.

I have a reoccurring issue with the P3 display of the transmit cw display.
Occasionally, the P3 doesn't display the TX waveform ( I have never noticed if
this happening on SSB...probably not since I have never had to fix it). The fix
is loading a config file stored when the problem was not happening.
I have tried to store a config file when it was happening just to see and then
restore using that file. What happens then is the P3 display locked up with a
dit and could not be unlocked.
After this test, I had to turn off the K3s and unpower the P3, restore power
and turn the K3s on, and restore with a copy of the config which was taken when
the display was showing transmit cw.
I'm thinking stray RF somehow causing this but never happened on SSB...and I
have no clue what is getting flipped in the rig or P3 to have this happen.
Since I can restore the config and fix it, I guess I'm mostly curious why it's
happening, any ideas?

Nice little device Lothar, but what about SSB when you want to use KX3 with
N1MM in SSB contests?

How to send and receive audio to computer and receive it from KX3?
