Commercial communication site practice

Note that commercial communications is VHF/UHF, with vertical antennas

site locations are often rather different. Take these differences into
account when applying them to our stations, which may be VERY different.
Their antennas, for example, are all vertical sticks on a tower.

I had the experience of setting up a ham station at a decommissioned
AT&T Long Lines microwave site on a 3,000 ft peak with a 140 ft tower
(36 ft square at the base, 24 ft square at the top), and studied their
grounding. VERY different application, VERY different budget. They spent
$1Meg on the road to the site. Walls were 14-in thick, and removable to
allow the installation of equipment. Grounding was textbook for THEIR
system, which was all microwave dishes.

Point well taken. and the vast majority of our LMR clients' sites are a
mixture of vertical antennas, corner reflectors, small yagis, and

costs of the infrastructure and equipment including labor.

As hams, we do what we can. especially those of us who live in areas

[Elecraft] K3 frequency entry

I try to enter the elecraft net 20m frequency directly; I push the FREQ

Am I trying it wrong, or is it just not possible, or do I have something

[Elecraft] best grounding technique

2021-03-21 Thread Bob McGraw
If one is grounding on the inside for lightning, you best think
otherwise!    Any and all grounding for lightning should be done outside
of the structure.  You should have lightning protection devices on all
coax, balanced, and rotor lines installed BEFORE they enter the structure.

Internal grounding or bonding is to keep all equipment at the same
potential.

Having a bus that runs the length of an operating desk with all the
equipment connected to it by short straps is not that different from
bonding each piece of equipment to the ones next to it. But it allows
you to remove one unit without breaking the "chain."
This is contrasted to the "star" system, in which each piece of
equipment is grounded to a central point with a relatively long ground lead.

This pretty much sums up why I'm not in the market for the book.

Look at it this way, say a discharge comes in through your antenna,

you prefer that energy goes only through the radio to ground (losing
the radio) or in a series through everything else in the shack too?
The 'fan' mode you mention is preferred, give that energy EVERY chance
to seek ground BEFORE it passes through your gear.

Energy shunts (PolyPhase devises for example) at the antenna entry

I suggest reading that book, several times (it's complex) for a better
understanding.

2021-03-21 Thread Gary Memory
Many years ago I contracted with Motorola for a large repeater
communications system/building to be located at an existing tower facility
that was already called home to dozens of other radio systems. The
Motorola R-56 standard was the 'bible' they quoted from and used. I have
personally used that same method many times since then. It works for me.
Your mileage may vary.

Having only used a K2 and a KX3, my experience agrees with your experience. If
you enter as 14303, it should go to 14.303 MHz. I just tune by ear from there
anyway. Of course, then you’ve got the problem that many people can’t seem to
tune in SSB so that they’re all on the same frequency, but that’s another story
:)

My KX2 manual on page 15 says:

to three kHz digits. Next tap enter (BAND) to accept, or any other switch to
cancel. Examples:

14.255MHz: FREQ 14.255 + enter
7.000 MHz: FREQ 7 + enter

Re: [Elecraft] K3 frequency entry

2021-03-21 Thread Fred Jensen
I just enter kHz ... "14028+AFX-Key".  Works fine for HF.  I think there
could possibly be an issue if you have transverters connected, in which
case the technique in the manual is very likely right.  One can always
do it the "Ham Way" and just try it and see what happens. 😉  We might
be over-precisioning [new word] here, I have a suspicion that the memory
gets you close enough to hear at which point you resort to "The Big
Knob."  With the display resolution set to 3 digits after the #2 decimal
point, entering "143035" yields a freq of 14.303.000 on my very old K3.

Having only used a K2 and a KX3, my experience agrees with your experience. If
you enter as 14303, it should go to 14.303 MHz. I just tune by ear from there

tune in SSB so that they’re all on the same frequency, but that’s another story
:)

Am I trying it wrong, or is it just not possible, or do I have something

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 tx low power on 80M SSB

2021-03-21 Thread Dave Jones
Thank you to Nate W1NAT and Reed W4JZ for your quick responses to my post. I
have carried out the TX gain calibration as you have both suggested and that has
fixed the problem. I now have the correct power output on all bands from 80
through to 12M. 10M is still a little low initially (about 4W) but the power
comes up with brief CW carrier or just as I talk on SSB to 10W. I can live with
that as I don't use 10M very often.

Thanks Dave VK4FD

[Elecraft] AX1 Performance Report

2021-03-21 Thread Dennis Moore
Tested out my KX3 portable setup out in the back field today, KX3 to the
AX1 through a 25' RG-58 coax, set up on the tripod mount with the
included counterpoise laying on the ground. I was running FT8 using only
2 watts and had several nice 17m contacts into Japan, plus TX and IN. I
worked a different op in IN on 20m who signed with 1w40zepp.

Central valley of California, butted up against the eastern foothills.

Thanks to Elecraft for the fine products.

[Elecraft] Hi Resolution Photograph of K4?

2021-03-21 Thread James F. Boehner, MD via Elecraft

Hello All,

I asked about a high-resolution picture of the Elecraft K4 some time ago and
was told that I should just save the picture on the website to my computer.

I have a high-resolution picture of the K3s and P3 that I use for wallpaper
at my Elecraft station. It is available in the photo section of the
elecraft...@groups.io list. The direct link
is here:

elecraft...@groups.io | Photo

This file is 1.04 MB with image dimensions of 1920 x 1080 with horizontal
and vertical resolutions of 300 dpi

The k3s wallpaper file above has stunning resolution and quality.

The picture on the Elecraft website (K4front-headon splitscreen) is an 80
kb file with image dimensions of 1060 x 497, with horizontal and vertical
resolution of 72 dpi.

Is a higher resolution picture of the K4 available anywhere?

TIA,

'73 de JIM N2ZZ

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2021-03-21 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Conditions were adequate to better.  QSB was deeper on 40 meters.
The band was changing quickly.  Signals ranged from S1 or less to S9,
sometimes in the same sentence.  Spring is starting. Flowers are
blooming ranked by elevation.  The daffodils are blooming down in Banks
while the snow drops are just starting here.  Birds can keep feeding on
the same species by flying upward a few hundred feet.

  On 14050.5 kHz at 2200z:

W0CZ - Ken - ND

K6XK - Roy - IA

K4JPN - Steve - GA

AB9V - Mike - IN

KL7CW - Rick - AK

  On  7047.5 kHz at z:

W0CZ - Ken - ND

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

K6PJV - Dale - CA

It is almost biting fly season.  When that starts I work in my
greenhouse.  Birding by ear is the only way possible with the
condensation steaming the walls.

  Until next week 73,

  Kevin.   KD5ONS

Here's neither bush nor shrub, to bear off
any weather at all, and another storm brewing;
I hear it sing i' the wind: yond same black
cloud, yond huge one, looks like a foul
bombard that would shed his liquor. If it
should thunder as it did before, I know not
where to hide my head: yond same cloud cannot
choose but fall by pailfuls.

[Thunder]

Alas, the storm is come again! my best way is to
creep under his gaberdine; there is no other
shelter hereabouts: misery acquaints a man with
strange bed-fellows. I will here shroud till the
dregs of the storm be past.
